Another Progressive Podcast

By Max Deutsch

Another Progressive Podcast. Like all the others. But also different. A show taking an in depth look at the political issues pundits and commentators dedicate just a few talking points to. Focusing on the arguments of Ben Shapiro, Charlie Kirk, Dave Rubin, and the whole New Right, I'll be explaining why they are so flawed, and why we maybe should not take the brave defenders of Facts and Logic so seriously. But also sometimes we won't talk about them. Hosted by Max Deutsch.

Understanding Election Security and Voter Suppression: A Conversation with Emily Levy

Understanding Election Security and Voter Suppression: A Conversation with Emily Levy

Since 2016, election security has been a major political issue, specifically regarding foreign interference in our elections. But our elections have not been secure for years, and the flaws in our election security have nothing to do with foreign actors. This week, I had the opportunity to speak with Emily Levy, a lifelong activist who is a recognized leader in the election security movement.  She has done work on election security in 9 states, specializing in helping people understand complex election technology issues. In January of 2020, she founded Scrutineers.org, an organization for those that want to fight for fair and secure elections. We spoke about all these issues, and some more. If you care about repairing our democracy, give it a listen!

The Flaws in the Right’s Rejection of Implicit Bias Studies

The Flaws in the Right’s Rejection of Implicit Bias Studies

In 2004, there was a major study released, which found that white job applicants receive 50% more callbacks than black applicants with identical resumes. This has become one of most classic cases used to explain how implicit bias plays out in the real world. However, as with many things, Ben Shapiro refutes this assumption that the disparities found in this study are based on racial discrimination. In this episode, I go through Ben's arguments, and look at the sources he uses to back them up. Unsurprisingly, I find that the truth is not on his side.

Understanding Poverty: A Conversation With Eri Noguchi

Understanding Poverty: A Conversation With Eri Noguchi

This week I spoke with the very first guest of Another Progressive Podcast, Eri Noguchi, a social worker working at the Association to Benefit Children, and adjunct professor at Columbia University and Hunter College. Eri works with children and families living in poverty, and understands what poverty looks like on a broad scale. Among many issues, we discuss the classic "pick yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality , the history of income distribution in America, the flaws in the method for measuring poverty, the ways in which poverty plays out in all aspects of a person's life, and the Universal Basic Income.  It's a great conversation that provides a comprehensive understanding of how poverty works, one that most people, left and right, don't fully recognize. So check it out!

Was the Southern Strategy Real? Did the Parties Switch? Does it Matter? (Spoiler Alert: Yes)

Was the Southern Strategy Real? Did the Parties Switch? Does it Matter? (Spoiler Alert: Yes)

The mainstream historical narrative of modern American politics is that from the 1960's to the 1980's, the Republican Party engaged in the "Southern Strategy", where they capitalized on Southern Democrats' opposition to civil rights, and used their racial fears to bring them into the Republican Party, creating what is called the "Party Switch".  However, modern conservative intellectuals deny this narrative, claiming it is all a myth. From the internet, to college campuses, to the halls of congress, PragerU, Ben Shapiro, Charlie Kirk and Candace Owens have maintained this stance. But can we trust their account of history? Is their analysis of the Southern Strategy right? In this episode, I take a look at the arguments they make to defend their stance, and analyze the history that contradicts them.
