MUTUAL FUNDS ARE GREAT IN YOUR IRA’S AND 401K’S BUT NOT IN INVESTMENT ACCOUNTS

Alex Mihajlov

The arch of his career has now landed his firm, Olde Raleigh Financial, to become a fee-based, Independent Advisory firm. Prior to that Mr. Mihajlov was a branch manager at A.G. Edwards, Wells Fargo and Raymond James. His career has been an evolution and, in turn, his perspective on service has evolved.  “My team and I have experienced the large brokerage houses and banks. While they have carved out their spot in the marketplace, I can say it is not for us. We have evolved and we tend to attract those who have evolved away from cookie cutter to a world of customization. They want collaboration. They wanted to be listened too. They want a relationship and we want them to be excited about our relationship.”

Savings Habits are Not Culturally Driven - CapEx is rising

We had a fun, meandering conversation with Matt Klein from The Overshoot. Love this guy. Smart as heck.

There is a lot of talk about China’s huge consumer potential and yes 1.6 billion gets the attention of S&P 500 companies. The challenge is very little of China’s GDP is controlled by the consumer because most is controlled by the state. In addition, China’s population is old - check out this podcast we did on China’s ageing population.  So what does huge ageing population with little extra money to spend have to say about the global demand trends and Chinese role in the world?  Throw in a $500 Billion gap in U.S. current accounts and a couple of stories about Mao acting crazy and boom – we got another episode of the Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor’s Life.

· Trade Wars are Class War’s

· Interest Rates Relation to Asset Prices and What it means to Household Income

· China’s Household Savings Rate is 30%. U.S. Household Savings Rate is 7%. Why?

· China’s Household Don’t Have A Safety Net and Have to Save not Spend

· The Consumer in China Has Very Little of China’s GDP and that Isn’t Changing Anytime Soon

· Interest Rates Relation to Asset Prices and What it means to Household Income

· What $500 Billion Gap in the U.S. Current Account Deficit Has to do with Companies Spending More on CapEx

· The Digital Yuan

· COVID Killed Consumer Spending in China? Not really. The Consumer never was spending in the first place.

· China is Getting Richer, but it is Still Really Poor

· Supply Chains – Good News, Rental Car Companies Have Rebuilt Their Fleets

· Mao killed a bunch of sparrows in China and 60 million people starved

· Mao told farmers in China to plant seeds a particular way and 60 million people starved

Sound Track to a Financial Advisor's Life Episode 13 with Mitch Ball

Our ongoing series of podcasts regarding the energy sector has led us to batteries. If the U.S. fleet of cars and trucks goes “green” over the next couple of decades, batteries will likely be one of the main power sources. So, we thought it prudent to talk to someone who lives, eats and breathes this stuff.

Beyond being a nice young man, Mitch works the Jeff Dahn Research Group where he and his colleagues work with researchers from all over to push the boundaries of battery tech. This was a fascinating conversation that centered largely on understanding what it takes to put in a battery and what happens after the battery is spent. We focused quite a bit of time on car batteries but according to our guy Mitch storage of energy in batteries is big and will grow exponentially as things progress.

A conversation with Cary, North Carolina based mortgage broker Sherry Riano

In a world flush with cash, 30-year fixed mortgages below 3% are the norm and home prices are elevated. It is certainly a sellers’ market in Raleigh, Cary, Durham and Chapel Hill but the challenge is finding a place to move to. Housing inventory is tight while labor and materials are in short supply. The likes of Apple and Bandwidth.com are setting up research centers stocked with well paid workers who will all need places to live. With all that going on at once we decided to talk to a mortgage broker and get their perspective on the real estate market.

With over 20 years of experience in the mortgage industry, Sherry Riano exudes a deep passion for helping families in the Triangle financially obtain their dream home. The energy of this interview was great. Sherry has seen the ups and downs of the business cycles over the years and is no doubt a leader in her industry.  If you are thinking about buying a home please listen. Lots of insights into the RDU real estate market.  Here are some of the topics we discussed.

  • Mortgage industry landscape
  • Local market update – what are you seeing, hearing, etc
  • Any thoughts on the Fed’s eventual tightening?
  • What are you most optimistic about and what do you see as challenges for our market?
  • What advice do you give first time homeowners?
  • Differences and impacts of a 15yr vs a 30yr mortgage? In your view, what role does a home play in someone’s personal balance sheet? VA Loans and the pleasure of serving our military families.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life Episode 9 with Rupert Darwall

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life Episode 9 with Rupert Darwall

Is the U.S. giving up some economic advantage, some leadership and stability by jettisoning carbon from the energy mix?

Most of us who live in Raleigh, NC take our energy for granted. We go about our day effortlessly, clicking on light switches, cell phones and TV’s rarely contemplating the complexities that fuel all of it. Only recently we were reminded that the wonder that is reliable energy can be scuttled by the world outside Raleigh when the Colonial Pipeline Ransomware Attack caused panic buying shortages up and down the east coast. Steady supplies of energy help companies forecast, innovate and create shareholder value. So, by extension, steady energy must be in place to fuel your retirement lifestyle and financial plans.

Olde Raleigh Financial is exploring the realities of changing the U.S. energy mix and this interview with Rupert Darwall is number two in a series on this really important topic - check out this interview with Bill O’Grady from Confluence Investments. Regardless of where one stands on their beliefs on global warming, it would seem the trend towards decarbonizing the U.S. economy and culture is gaining tracking both in corporate boardrooms and politically. Mr. Darwall is a London-based business strategy consultant and policy analyst who takes a more critical view of global warming and the costs of decarbonization.

  • British Experience w/Green Economy. Acceleration of British Industrialization decline?
  • The German Greens and what they say about Europe Energy Outlook
  • The Effects Renewables of Economics of the Grid.
  • What will be the costs and effects of decarbonizations on a global scale?
  • Is decarbonization a U.S./Western Europe issue and not really an issue for the rest of the world?
  • Are we giving up our cheap energy advantage to China and the developing world by decarbonizing?
  • Are batteries and their supply chain actually a net environmental threat and may more importantly be more disruptive to global wealth distribution and pollution than oil? What’s going on with Rare Earths?

The relationship between the U.S. and China will impact the world’s supply chains for decades to come and therefore investors need to be aware of the dynamics. This interview with Phillip Orchard from Geopolitical Futures - a Geopolitical forecasting firm - features discussion about Taiwan’s microchip industry, the rare earth supply chain, Chinese military threats against Taiwan and its relationship with India

  • Taiwan’s is the dominant producer of broad use microchips in the world. What challenges does this create for the U.S. supply chain? Turns out the process of making microchips takes a lot of water and Taiwan is under drought conditions?
  • Taiwan was once under the control of Chinese leaders and all indicators are they want it back. What are the realistic chances of China taking over Taiwan via a military action?
  • Rare earths elements are crucial ingredients in computers, cell phones and the F35 fighter. China is the world leader in supply and over that past 10yrs has weaponized them in the global supply chain. Does this mean the U.S. and others are reshoring rare earth production?
  • China has the largest Naval fleet in the world but what kind of military actions is it capable of? Historically, China is land power so many questions remain as to their largely untested Naval capabilities.
  • What is the historic relationship between China and India?

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life Episode 4 with Professor Ted Zoller

A discussion with Professor Ted Zoller regarding the future of higher education and the costs associated with it in a post-COVID world

  • Higher education is going through its entrepreneurial phase that is creating new business models
  • Residential universities will have segmentation - pure residential, residential hybrid and pure distance.
  • Education unbundled from degrees to create T shaped learners - which are people who learn something deeply but also have a wider perspective on things that they can do
  • Bifurcation between teaching, resources and research resources – a curriculum of general education and hyperspecialized importantly actionable education that employers want.
  • Private, big name colleges will remain expensive but overall education costs will come down due to competition and new education business models.
  • The half-life of education is getting shorter – your children will have to save for educational products out of their income to upgrade their career

Higher Education and skills will become MORE valuable in our society. College savings programs like 529 accounts can be a key way to save for ongoing educational needs of children and grandchildren

One of the hot topics that we were – we’ve been talking to people about right off the bat of ’21 are Roth, excuse me, are Solo 401k’s and more specifically Roth Solo 401k’s. An important piece of planning for your retirement. So, what is – what is a Solo 401k?

MIHAJLOV:  So, Solo 401k allows an employee or a sole owner of a business or a sole employee to set up a retirement plan that doesn’t have any employees. So, they don’t have to cover anybody but themselves. And it’s a great plan because it gives them the advantages of a Corporate 401k with the same limits but they don’t have to cover other employees because they don’t have other employees. And the cool thing about that is the employer piece of that Solo 401k, the money that the employer/employee can put away themselves directly from their paycheck and in 2020 that limitation was $19,500 plus another $6,500 if the individual’s over age 50. So, you could basically put $26,000 and I think that’s going up in ’21 as well. You could put that away for yourself and you can either do it in a deductible sense meaning it would reduce your taxable income or you can do it in the Roth sense meaning it doesn’t reduce your income but the growth on that money and the money you put away, you theoretically should never pay tax on again unless congress changes the law.

CHAMBERS:  So, you can have a Solo 401k, just let me clarify, you can have two buckets. It’s – one is the Roth and then the employer bucket?

MIHAJLOV:  Yes.

CHAMBERS:  And the employer bucket is pretax. Always will be pretax.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life - INSEAD’s Stewart Black: Asian Demographic Trends and a 30-50 Year Investment Horizon

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life - INSEAD’s Stewart Black: Asian Demographic Trends and a 30-50 Year Investment Horizon

When not helping top executives with business strategy, contributing to Harvard Business Reviews or contemplating Asia’s future role in the world, Steward Black can be found raising his family and eating his wife’s incredible Greek cooking. Why interview a person like Stewart Black? China is often portrayed as a great threat to the U.S.. In a world where the U.S. is reconsidering things like being the hegemon and global trade, the narrative of this “China Threat” is bubbling up. Is there a counter narrative that puts China more in perspective? Among other topics, this conversation goes deep into demographic trends of the region and how these trends might guide not only China’s role but Asia’s role in the world for the next 30-50 years. We discuss Japan’s leadership in robotic technology, Chinese government intervention in the balance sheets of Chinese companies and the impact of household saving rates both in the U.S and Asian. We also cover aircraft carriers, the U.S. role as the hegemon and why being the world’s reserve currency isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. This was a fun one – enjoy!

Hey everybody. This is Trevor Chambers from Olde Raleigh Financial. Welcome to one more edition of Meet the Masters. Today I’m – I’m really excited about – about STEWART BLACK: Stewart, how are you today?

BLACK:  Great.

CHAMBERS:  Awesome.

BLACK:  Great to be with you.

CHAMBERS:  Thank you for taking the time. We’re going to be talking about Asia and China today. And this is important. This is a big region, especially China. That’s been on the rise and it’s important to discuss China and – as it relates to global trends and the cycle – or the financial cycle of the globe, trade deficits and the like. And it’s just important for investors to consider these very large macro trends. And so, Stewart – I found Stewart on Harvard Business Review. Let me just brag on this guy a little bit, all right. He’s a professor of management practices of global leadership and strategy at, now how do you pronounce this? INSEAD? How do you pronounce that?

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life - Your Browser is Buying Your Next Bourbon with Mike Fraser, Founder of Avalanche Media Works

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life - Your Browser is Buying Your Next Bourbon with Mike Fraser, Founder of Avalanche Media Works

Visual communication entrepreneur and Crypto Culture watcher Mike Fraser talks to Trevor and Blake about the future of making and spending money. We break down how Cryptocurrencies and The Blockchain are influencing the future of personal finance. Mike uses a Brave Browser which pays him - via Blockchain - to click on highly targeted ads. He uses the money to buy some pints and food from local restaurants. The future wallet is here.

Hey everybody. It’s Trevor Chambers from Olde Raleigh Financial. Once again, we are posting up another awesome, I think awesome at least, considering my guest blog post on our blog, A Soundtrack to an Advisors Life. And today were going to talk to another master. We like to meet masters who know their space really, really well. And I want to welcome Mike Frazier. Mike from the big state of Ohio. What’s going on out there, brother?

MIKE FRASER:  Hey, we’re just living the dream up here in Ohio.

CHAMBERS:  Yeah. Hey how is Notre Dame doing? Buddy, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. How’s Michigan doing up there. I mean –

FRASER:  Yeah. We don’t kick off until later in October.

CHAMBERS:  I got it. Yeah you guys are on a different time line up there.

FRASER:  Yeah.

CHAMBERS: In more ways than one.

FRASER:  Right, right.

CHAMBERS: I’m only kidding. I’m only kidding. All right, so Mike, you are – I saw some – you have a design background. You’ve been in the webspace forever. You understand marketing, specifically Social Media marketing and that’s kinda (sic) your day gig. And then one of the things that you kind of study, and I think from a, like a journalist point of view is blockchain. And so, todays – we’re going to talk about blockchain. We get, you know, questions about blockchain occasionally. We get questions about bitcoin, especially a couple years ago. That was the topic among certain clients. Then they moved on to marijuana stocks. That was another popular one, like last year. So, two years ago, it was bitcoin, then marijuana stocks and there’s always these, but blockchain has been around. Not going anywhere and Mike’s going to talk about it so welcome, Mike to Olde Raleigh Financial Group.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – Alex Mihajlov, Senior Private Wealth Manager at Olde Raleigh Financial Group Discusses Year End Planning

Hey everybody. This is Trevor Chambers from Olde Raleigh Financial Group. We continue on with our soundtrack to an advisor’s life blog and podcast. And today we have an in-house guest with Mr. Alex Mihajlov. And today we want to talk about some year end planning. What is on your mind, Mr. Mihajlov on that?

MIHAJLOV: Well, Trevor it’s great to see you.

CHAMBERS: Good evening.

MIHAJLOV: Good evening and welcome.

CHAMBERS: Welcome.

MIHAJLOV: This is probably one of the most important part -- times of the year right here. Because this is the time that we really go into full out year end planning mode. And I think this year due to the pandemic, it is probably one of the most complex and important times to have a year end planning session with your, at minimum your financial advisor.

CHAMBERS: I would say that’s a great idea. What specifically are you thinking about that people really start -- need to consider this year? What changes went on?

MIHAJLOV: Well people ask me all the time if I’m worried about the stock market. I’m not as worried about the stock market as I am about tax brackets.

CHAMBRS: Right.

MIHAJLOV: And I think people have a historic opportunity to take advantage of tax brackets because I don’t think there’s anywhere for tax brackets to go ultimately than up. So, I think this is a great time for people to take a hard look at their tax bracket and make sure they’re topping it off by potentially pulling money out of retirement and IRA accounts and either converting them to ROTH or not converting them to ROTH but giving them out at this level tax brackets.

Hey everybody! Trevor Chambers with Olde Raleigh Financial, once again, we continue with our Meet the Masters series as part of our blog called, Soundtrack to an Advisor's Life. I got a great guy today that I'm excited to have and host, Andrew Opdyke, he is from First Trust Portfolios, and he an economist there. Welcome buddy, how are you?

Andrew Opdyle:

I'm good Trevor, I'm happy to be with you today. How are you?

Trevor:

I'm really good. So we use some of your products, and I must say, I want to give a shout out to First Trust, you're really a first class organization, and I'm sure it must be challenging, but a fun organization to work for. And all the events you've ever been in have been so professionally run with you guys, and I just wanted to shout out to that.

So my man, interesting times to be an economist, huh?

Andrew Opdyle:

Oh my gosh, I never thought, yeah, when I went through school in undergrad, grad school, all that, I never thought I'd spend this much time looking into things like epidemiology, and looking into how the constitution is written in specific areas related to election timing and things like that. So an unusual year for sure.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life - Paul Foley Discusses Securities, Business Law and Investment Fund Formation

Hey everybody. This is Trevor Chambers from Old Raleigh financial. Once again, we are adding to the pile of awesomeness that is becoming our Meet The Master series. It looks like we've got a lawyer in the house. Paul Foley is a leading corporate and securities lawyer. He's the chair of Akerman's Investment Management Practice Group. Did I say that right?

Paul Foley:

Akerman's.

Trevor Chambers:

I did that on purpose. I was testing you. In the asset, I had a great... I hit it off with Paul immediately. Paul and I met... Paul, this was three, maybe going on four years ago, if you believe that. My senior partner, Alex and I were doing due diligence on the independent RA channel because we wanted to make a move to that channel. And somebody connected us to you. We went down to see you and had a ball. And your comment was... Do you recall what your comment was to us in your office?

Paul Foley:

I think I remember, but I'll let you share it.

Trevor Chambers:

Okay, thank you. What you said was, "I've met a lot of guys, not quite as bright as you, who have done it. You could do is fine." Which I thought was hilarious. I don't know if you wanted to endorse that or not.

Paul Foley:

I just think sometimes there's a lot of anxiety about moving independent and moving away from potentially [inaudible 00:01:46] brand name and that kind of thing. The rules and the way it all works is pretty reasonable. I think it's not as daunting of a task to go independent as some are led to believe. And that was really what I was trying to communicate there.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life - Kevin Lewis Discusses Markets and Investment Strategies

Hey, everybody. It's Trevor Chambers with Olde Raleigh Financial Group. Once again, we're continuing our Meet the Masters series here, blog and podcast. I am super excited today. We're getting back into some finance and talking about markets and investments with Kevin Lewis. Say hi, Kevin.

Kevin Lewis:

Hey, everyone.

Trevor Chambers:

Kevin is with American Century Investments. He's a senior portfolio manager, and I'll let Kevin get right into it. I want Kevin to talk about American Century and himself and give a background. This is going to be a good romp through a bunch of stuff. This guy loves history and architecture, so I'm super excited to have you here. Also, I see Virginia Army National Guard. Thank you so much for your service, sir. How long? Were you in the Guard? Looks like quite a while. Thank you. Talk about that a little bit.

Kevin Lewis:

Six years. Yeah, six years. I graduated from Virginia Tech. I went through the ROTC program there, the Corps of Cadets, and had the honor of serving for six years as a combat engineer officer for the Virginia Army National Guard and the Reserve. It was a rewarding experience, and one I was glad to do.

Trevor Chambers:

Great. Thank you for your service. We always love hearing from you folks, veterans. All right, my man. Let's just jump right into this. I want to talk about, you guys have a nice growth portfolio that you run. I think you call it the Focused Dynamic, and I want to jump right into it, because we're obviously in an interesting time in the markets. I want to see, let's talk about your philosophy and what sets that strategy part and what you guys have got going on with it. Then let's talk from that, I guess we talked about this a little earlier and you said, "I don't want to talk thematically." You don't invest thematically is what you said, so talk to me about that. What's going on? Talk to me about American Century. Talk to me about the strategy.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – Trey Prescott Discusses Advisory Services Network and Independent Firms

Trevor Chambers:

Hey everybody, this is Trevor Chambers, with Olde Raleigh Financial Group, and Meet the Masters. Today, we continue our discussions with people who work within the registered independent advisor industry. And today, we have the pleasure of having Director of Business Development for Atlanta area based advisory services network, Mr. Trey Prescott. Trey, how are you doing today, man?

Trey Prescott:

I'm doing fantastic. I appreciate you guys having me on.

Trevor Chambers:

No problem. We know each other quite a bit. About jeeze, coming up on three years, and I know that you work with your dad Tom, who co-founded ASN, and I just wanted to talk to you today, because I want to get your perspective. You do business development, so you bring people on board to ASN and the platforms you developed. I just wanted to hear, what does ASN do for advisors. What's your pitch, and then we can just talk about other things, but I want to start there. Why work with ASN, and why move to that type of regulatory platform?

Trey Prescott:

Loaded question.

Trevor Chambers:

Yes, of course.

Trey Prescott:

It really depends on who you are, what you're doing, but more importantly, where you want to go in this business. We come from a very different space. I begrudgingly joined ASN straight out of college and-

Trevor Chambers:

Begrudgingly?

Trey Prescott:

Just listen. If you grew up in a house with Tom Prescott… compliance consultant, you would understand begrudgingly.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life - James Vardaman PhD, Discussing Family Business and Entrepreneurialism

Hey, everybody. This is Trevor Chambers from Olde Raleigh Financial. And once again, this is Meet the Masters, a blog series where we talk to subject matter experts on wide-ranging topics. Today I continue with discussions about entrepreneurialism and family businesses and things like that with James Vardaman. Say hi, James.

James Vardaman:

Hello, everybody. Thanks for having me, Trevor.

Trevor Chambers:

Everybody. I don't know if anyone's listening, but anyway. James is an associate professor and a Nancy Allen Fellow of Management at Mississippi State University. He focuses on family business and entrepreneurialism, among other things, but I hear the Vardaman train is moving out and you're going someplace. Where you going now?

James Vardaman:

Yeah. I'm moving to the University of Memphis in the fall. I'll be a professor of management and chair of Excellence and Free Enterprise. So I'll be doing more work on entrepreneurship. I'll just be doing it a few hours north.

Trevor Chambers:

Well, fabulous. You'll be having Memphis barbecue.

James Vardaman:

I will, I will.

Trevor Chambers:

Nice. Well, it's so great to have you and I appreciate you taking some time. What's your history, and how did you arrive now at the University of Memphis and this interest that you have in entrepreneurs?

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – Joachim Klement Discusses Practical Analysis for Investing, along with the Human Side of Financial Markets

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – Joachim Klement Discusses Practical Analysis for Investing, along with the Human Side of Financial Markets

Hey Everybody, this is Trevor Chambers from Olde Raleigh Financial. I want to welcome you to another one of our series of blog and podcasts called "Meet the Masters," and I'm very excited today. I've got a really interesting gentleman with us. Joachim Klement is somebody I started following. He's got a great newsletter out, and we'll include all the contact information on Joachim when we get done.

His observations on markets, finance culture and politics are rooted in what I would called a unique vantage point. Joachim is German born and raised but lives in London with his American wife. I want to hear that story. He's an investment strategist with a long career in asset allocation economics, equities, and alternative investment. And he looks at the lens. He looks at life and everything, but particularly in markets, through the lens… He's a trained physicist, but he loves the human side of financial markets.

Olde Raleigh Financial welcomes Joachim Klement. How you doing, buddy?

Joachim Klement:

I'm very good. How are you guys?

Trevor Chambers:

Good, I'm great. I'm sorry for the long-winded introduction, but you got a lot going on there. How's things in London? Are we foggy, overcast or what's going on over there?

Joachim Klement:

No, for once, we've had two terrible weeks of rain and gray, which is obviously, a typical British summer, but now we actually have sunshine which is quite a nice change.

Trevor Chambers:

That's fabulous. Well, I'm glad to hear that, and I do want to hear about how you got this Yankee wife. We'll get to that in a minute. I want to jump right into it, all right? What's the stupidest argument in the world of economics, in your opinion, currently?

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor – Tom Prescott discusses the state of wealth advisory and how he his company, Advisory Services Network, helps advisor transition away from the broker dealer platform

Hey everybody. This is Trevor Chambers and Alex Mihajlov from Olde Raleigh Financial Group. Today on meet the masters, with today being five 29, 2020. We are thrilled to have one Thomas C Prescott, say hi, Thomas.

Thomas C Prescott:

Good morning.

Trevor Chambers:

How are you?

Thomas C Prescott:

Doing great.

Trevor Chambers:

Good. We're excited to have Tom because Tom is a veteran of the financial services world and he's got a wonderful company called ASN that I want you guys to hear about. But real brief, Tom Prescott is the founder and managing member of Advisory Services Network. He's got 35 years of experience. I see, in my deep research on your background, you've got Lehman and a couple of other big names in there. So you've been around, give me the two minute on Tom Prescott, please.

Thomas C Prescott:

Well, came into the industry straight out of college, got a training program spot with Lehman brothers, [CUNLOB 00:01:00] before it was the Lehman Brothers that we all read about in the news. It was a great, great experience and yeah, they did the old type of training program. They trained you in every segment of the business and then you decided, or they decided where you fit best. Been in the industry ever since. For the last 30, I've been obviously managing my own businesses since I left, what I would call the normal wall street experience.

Trevor Chambers:

Nice. So let's get right into it. Tell us about ASN and why, more importantly, did you start this beautiful business of yours?

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – Professor Will Tabor Discusses His Research on Family Business Succession Planning and BBQ Joints

Hey, everybody. This is Trevor Chambers from Olde Raleigh Financial Group. Today on Meet the Masters, I'm really excited to do this, I'm going to be talking to Will Tabor. Will is an Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Belhaven University down in Jackson, Mississippi. Say hi, Will.

Will:

Hey, Trevor. Good to be with you.

Trevor:

It's such a pleasure to have you. So what's going on in Jackson... well, let me actually, before I do this, I'm fumbling this whole introduction. So one of your areas of research, the reason why I got Will on today is because he focuses on family business, some of his research, family business and specifically succession planning, so I'm really excited to have him talk about that. Obviously, we here at Olde Raleigh Financial, we're in the financial planning business, so this dovetails really, really well.

But, before I get into all of that, you're in lovely Jacksonville, Mississippi this morning, the 29th of May, 2020. What's going on down there, how's things?

Will:

Things are okay. You know, it's quarantine life, so nothing too exciting. We're doing all right. I got two kids and they're enjoying being at home. Their mom is maybe, getting a little bit stressed, but you know, I think that's pretty common across the board.

Trevor:

So just for historical reference, for the futures of millions that are going to listen to this podcast, we're in the middle of the plague of what we call COVID-19, so that's what's going on. Well, I'm glad to hear that everybody is at least doing well. Yes, there's a lot of frustrated parents across the United States of America. You're a professor, obviously are going to look pretty different in the fall I would imagine, or could potentially look pretty different in the Fall for you guys, I imagine.

Will:

Oh yeah for sure. Right now, it's anybody's guess, what's going forward. We're in the south east and our state is opening back up at this point, so our university is planning to be open back up, but who knows what the future holds, we'll just have to see.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – Durham-based CPA Chris Arena focuses his practice on entrepreneurs

Hello everybody. This is Trevor Chambers. I'm the host of Meet the Masters. I don't know, man. That may be a little pretentious. We're going to have change this name.

Anyway, I'm from Old Raleigh Financial Group here in lovely Raleigh, North Carolina. Here at Meet at the Masters, it's a collection of interviews with a wide range of thought leaders in various disciplines, including but not limited to financial area, financials.

It's May 21st, 2020. Today, I'm super excited. We're going to kick off. It's the opening volley. It's the shot heard round the world. It's the first edition of Inside the Arena with Chris Arena. Let me say that again. It's Inside the Arena with Chris Arena, a Durham, North Carolina based CPA who loves working with warriors, otherwise known as entrepreneurs. Is that a correct characterization of one Chris Arena?

Chris:

I think that sounds good. I love working with entrepreneurs and warriors, wherever that Venn diagram overlaps, which you decide.

Trevor:

Yeah, man. How you doing today? I should note that it is overcast and has been overcast for several days. How you doing, man? How's your vitamin D levels out there?

Chris:

Yeah, struggling. It's been raining nonstop it feels like, what, a week.

Trevor:

Yeah.

Chris:

The quarantine, I've got two young kids ... They're three and five, so I'm exhausted every day no matter what. Then you add in the fact that I've been shut in with them for going on four days now, mentally I’m… We'll just put it that way.

Trevor:

Yeah. You got the easy job because you're not the mom. Come on. Let's just call a spade a spade. Right?

Chris:

Excuse me. I'm a 21st century dad. Very active and involved. My wife is a 21st century mom. She works full-time just like I do. We're both completely up to our neck and childcare and losing our minds. Jointly.

Trevor:

All right. All right. I'm just saying, she's still the boss.

Chris:

She's definitely still the boss, does way more than I do. I'm just trying to pretend that's not the case, but yeah. Absolutely.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – Barron’s Magazine’s Matt C. Klein

Hey everybody. It's Trevor Chambers from Old Raleigh Financial Group here in lovely Raleigh, North Carolina. Today on Meet the Masters ... Matthew, I've got to call you a smarty-pants. I read your bio and stuff. I did deep research as far as Google. This guy is cool. Matthew Klein is an economics commentator for Barron's Magazine. His latest book is, Trade and Balances and How Global and Trade and Financial Systems Can Transmit Problems from One Society to Another. Did I get that right? Did I botch it? How did I do?

Matthew Klein:

Yeah, that's fantastic.

Trevor Chambers:

Fabulous, man. Now where you are, my friend? Tell us where you are?

Matthew Klein:

I'm in San Francisco right now, sunny San Francisco.

Trevor Chambers:

How are things? I've got to mark the date. Today is May 20th, 2020. What's the stage of the state there briefly?

Matthew Klein:

San Francisco is interesting because we had one of the first cases of coronavirus in the United States along with Seattle and we reacted very quickly to that. It seems like that worked pretty well. We've always had relatively few infections. I think the total death count in San Francisco itself is under 40 which obviously is a lot worse than zero but compared to a lot of other large cities, this is relatively good. Things seem to be, in many ways, I don't want to say fully normal, but you see people out in the streets here. People go into stores that are open. Restaurants seem to be doing relatively brisk business in take out and delivery. I see plenty out when I go out on runs. Compared to some other places, I think we've been very fortunate.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – Eagle Asset Management’s James Camp. We discuss portfolios for the long haul, Modern Monetary Theory and Yoga

Hello, everybody. It is May 13th, 2020. Welcome back to Meet the Masters with Olde Raleigh Financial Group. Meet the Masters is a collection of interviews, with subject matter experts that have deep knowledge, and experience in various parts of our economy. Today, I am fired up to have James Camp with us. James is the Managing Director of Fixed Income and Strategic Income at Eagle Asset Management. James, welcome to Meet the Masters.

James Camp:

Thank you so much. Pleasure to be here.

Trevor Chambers:

Awesome. I am fired up, because one of my partners, Blake Paro, he's like, "When are we getting James Camp? We've got to get James Camp in here. I love this guy." You've got some fans in Raleigh, North Carolina, my friend. Hey, tell me, where are you from? Give me your history, and then tell me about Eagle and what you guys do down there.

James Camp:

I'm from the mid-Atlantic. I grew up in the DC area; suburban Maryland, to be specific.

Trevor Chambers:

Oh, nice.

Been traveling South most of my career. I did my undergraduate studies in engineering at Vanderbilt. Then, went on to business school at Emory University in Atlanta, and sort of began a career in the bond market right after business school. A nice area to combine my growing interest in finance and economics with some technical background, that made me employable. Getting out of the gate, that was my foray into fixed income, was at a company called Ing out of Atlanta.

I was recruited from Raymond James early on in my career, post-graduate school, so I've been with the parent company now going on 27 years. I've been with Eagle for 24 of those years. Eagle is an asset management company. We are wholly owned by Raymond James Financial, but we are highly independent in terms of thought, deliverable, and execution of how we do investment management. That's one of the true joys of my career, is that I have a team that I work with, and I speak directly to advisors like I am today. We talk about what we think, what we see, and how we do things. Being able to have that independent outlook, especially in the debt markets in this particular last 10 years at least, is a real advantage, I think.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – Patrick Sullivan & Jake Rosenfeld on their social impact startup Bonsai.

Hey everybody. My name's Trevor Chambers. I'm the host of Meet The Masters with Olde Raleigh Financial group. Today is May 7, 2020, and what we do here at Meet the Masters, we interview subject matter experts like today's guests, Patrick Sullivan. Say hi, Patrick.

Patrick Sullivan:

Hey everybody.

Trevor Chambers:

And Jake Rosenfeld.

Jake Rosenfeld:

Yep. Good to be here.

Trevor Chambers:

Yeah man. These guys have lots of experience in founding, and funding, and exiting businesses, and hiring people, and they're the nuts and bolts of how to get a company rolling, and I can't wait to hear their stories. They have teamed up to create a new venture called Bonsai which we're going to talk about, which I think is pretty right on time in terms of the concept. Let me just start off with Jake. Jake, are you a Michigan kid? I saw Michigan on the roster for college. What's going on? Where you from? What's your story?

Jake Rosenfeld:

Yeah, yeah. I definitely identify as a Michigan man, but I'm born and raised in New York.

Trevor Chambers:

Okay, all right.

Jake Rosenfeld:

Yeah, I was born in Long Island about 20, 30 minutes outside of Manhattan. Went to Michigan for college, and moved to Manhattan right after college. But loved my time in Michigan, big Michigan sports fan. While at Michigan, I fell in love with the concept of being an entrepreneur and always did some hustle side projects, as a kid growing up, but really it blossomed while I was in college. So I started my first real venture which was a marketplace for tutors and students to connect in Ann Arbor, specifically within Michigan. And honestly, that was created to solve a pain point that I was feeling myself. It wasn't that I was some genius hacking away programming a website at night, I needed an economics tutor to do well in the class in order to get into the undergraduate business program and I was totally screwing up.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – Sam DiFranco from Trinity Partners, Discusses Commercial Real Estate in the Raleigh Area and More!

Meet the Masters – Sam DiFranco from Trinity Partners, Discusses Commercial Real Estate, his love of the Raleigh area, Buffalo, NY roots and the family business.

Trevor Chambers:

Everybody, this is Trevor Chambers from the Old Raleigh Financial Group’s Meet the Masters blog and podcast. Today I have Sam DiFranco and I’m so happy to have him. Sam is a Raleigh and RDU-based guy, and he heads up Trinity Partners which is a commercial real estate services firm here locally. I want to welcome Sam for being here. Welcome, Sam.

Sam DiFranco:

Thank you, Trevor. Thanks for having me.

Trevor Chambers:

Excellent. So I want to jump right in to it with you. I had a nice conversation with you a couple of weeks ago and it was very interesting to get some perspectives on what’s going on here, and maybe even on a larger scale around the country in your space. But before we get into that, tell me about Trinity Partners real quick, and where you’re from, and your background and all that.

Sam DiFranco:

Sure. Well actually, I’ve been in the Raleigh market for 23 years now. I came down here in 1995 to check out the marketplace. Born and raised in the Niagara Falls, Buffalo area of Western New York. I came down here because a… For the number one reason of the weather, and the fact that the economy was faltering in Western New York. We had a continuation of loss of jobs and exodus of people. And quite frankly, in the real estate business all we were doing up north was buying signs and planting signs all over. So people would say, “I see your signs all over.” And I’d say, “Yeah, you see my signs, but you don’t see sold or leased. You see available.”

So I came down here in 1995 in Super Bowl Week of January when it’s pretty dismal for those people in old Western New York. It’s a pretty ugly place to be. And I hung out for a week. I spent a couple of days in Raleigh, a couple of days in Charlotte, and a couple of days at the coast, just to determine if I liked the state. Actually, one of the reasons I came here was Forbes Magazine in 1995 had a front page cover, Best Place to Live in America, or Best Place to Raise a Family, it might have been. And Raleigh-Durham was number one. So I told my wife, I said, “Hey, what do you think about moving?”

He’s a pretty [inaudible 00:04:55] guy actually in my thoughts and in my personal history, and I’ll let him talk about what he does, but he’s the T.W. Lewis Clinical Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship and Director of the Entrepreneurship Center at UNC where he researches, focused on the role of structure of entrepreneurial networks and the interrelationships with investor syndicates.

Let me be more clear. You are at Kenan-Flagler, which is part of UNC Chapel Hill. I botched that whole thing, Ted. But if you could just pick up my slack, that’d be totally helpful. All right?

Ted Zoller:

Absolutely.

Trevor Chambers:

So it’s good to have you. I’m going to start. Can you just give me a nice synopsis of the history of one Ted Zoller? Where’d you come from, how’d you get here, what’s going on?

Ted Zoller:

Geez. You know, it’s funny, we share a similar background. I came from upstate New York of all things. A little town called Seneca Falls, which is one of the most incredible places, because it was the place where Frank Capra actually based It’s a Wonderful Life on, so it’s kind of an idyllic little town. It was a town built by entrepreneurs. I’ve got a map, literally, in my garage, in my shop, of Seneca Falls and the industrial history of Seneca Falls, and all these great entrepreneurs who started companies there to manufacturer things like fire trucks and pumps and it ended up being kind of a major manufacturing town and all these beautiful homes that are there because all these people were first generation entrepreneurs. So it was just a great place to come from. I think that’s probably why I got interested in entrepreneurship, because-

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – John Mousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer, and the Director of Fixed Income at Cumberland Advisors

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life – John Mousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer, and the Director of Fixed Income at Cumberland Advisors

Today is March 22nd 2020, crazy time of our history here, world history, history of the United States, and I’m doing a series right now of talking to some people who’s opinions I respect, we’re definitely taking a long view and under that framework conversation, I want to introduce John … Tell me your, I’m going to butcher your last name, but I just call you Moose. You know you and I just met and I know I’m getting personal here but I call you the moose, but John tell me the pronunciation of your last name.

John Mousseau:

So the last pronunciation Trevor is Mousseau.

Trevor Chambers:

Mousseau, got it.

John Mousseau:

And I’ve been called Moose my whole life as my sister and two brothers have and my three daughters have and my father was big moose, so there you go.

Trevor Chambers:

So you guys are the herd?

John Mousseau:

We’ve never called ourselves the herd but not a bad idea.

Trevor Chambers:

I think you should.

John Mousseau:

Yeah absolutely.

Trevor Chambers:

So tell me, where did you grow up?

John Mousseau:

I grew up in north eastern Connecticut, literally in the north east corner, Thompson Connecticut, so the next town north is Massachusetts and the next town east is Rhode island. It’s called the quiet corner of Connecticut, not as quiet anymore because we’ve had a lot of people move there from western Connecticut to buy some older homes and casino executives moving north to buy homes and people moving down out of the bus route, 128 [inaudible 00:05:20] kind of needs for more affordable homes. So in the area that used to be a broken down pathways move to north Carolina area 50 years ago is now more shishi in the sense that it has a lot of antique shops and galleries and stuff like that. But it was a nice area to grow up in.

Hello everybody. My name is Trevor chambers. I’m the host of Meet The Masters with Olde Raleigh Financial group. Today is March 21st, 2020. I Marked that date because the world is as always a bit nutty, but safe to say it’s very interesting, very, very naughty today. We’ve got COVID-19 going on, negative-valued oil. The Kim Jong Un from Korea may be dying. I don’t know. And maybe most tragically, there is no baseball going on.

So with that backdrop, I thought no better time to reach out to one of the firms, one of our firm’s favorite voices in the world of investing. Mr. Bill O’Grady, welcome Bill O’Grady. How are you?

Bill O’Grady:

I’m good, thanks.

Trevor Chambers:

Excellent. I’m just going to give a brief little background on you. Bill is the Chief Market Strategist for a Confluence Investment Management based in St. Louis. In that role, Mr. O’Grady performance market economic and geopolitical research for the firm and as a member of the investment committee for the asset allocation strategies and international equity strategies, Bill also co-managed his confluences, his global hard asset portfolio, which focuses on tangible commodities investments. Additionally, Bill writes numerous reports in the firm, which can be found in research and news section of the site.

So welcome to Meet the Masters, Bill. I just wanted to… can you give a brief history of you and how you ended up in Confluence and in this world of value investing in longterm investing?

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life: Dr. Bob Adams, Former Navy Seal, Retired Physician and Eagle Scout Frames COVID-19

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life: Dr. Bob Adams, Former Navy Seal, Retired Physician and Eagle Scout Frames COVID-19

Olde Raleigh Financial's Meet the Masters Video Series https://olderaleighfinancial.com

Olde Raleigh Financial Group had the opportunity to interview Dr. Bob Adams.  Dr. Adams is a North Carolina-based retired physician, former Navy SEAL with an MBA, and an Eagle Scout. He is currently a Healthcare Consultant, public speaker, and the author of the book Six Days of Impossible: Navy SEAL Hell Week - A Doctor Looks Back.

Dr. Adam’s comments are based on a career in healthcare that included setting up military hospitals in hostile environments. He is refreshingly forward with his opinion and provides a counter-narrative to public media. The views expressed are those of

Dr. Adams and do not reflect the views/opinions held by Advisory Services Network, LLC.  Let's jump into the transcript.

Alex Mihajlov: There you go. Well I'm really glad you joined us today because I am trying to find some rational voice in the latest national panic that is gripping this country and that is COVID-19 and everybody's screaming about it and talking about it and scared to death about it and afraid to talk to anybody and afraid to breathe near anybody. And so I was kind of hoping I'd get some rational thought out of you. The first question that I'm having a hard time finding out is how did this truly, how did this virus truly start? Do you have a good theory on that?

Bob Adams: So you don't need theories, there's pretty good science to back up the beginning of the Wuhan China outbreak, there's a meat market there that sells animals that honestly are illegal to sell but are eaten anyway and they've tracked it back to that meat market and suspect a ground dwelling animal, looks a little bit like an Armadillo, as the animal vector for this particular virus. We tracked a lot of the covid viruses, there's seven of these corona viruses out there that we see six of them quite routinely and regularly. Similar to the over 400 flu viruses that are out there that we see annually and regularly this time of the year. So the Wuhan China, center of the outbreak has been tracked back to the first patient, and we're going to track its development and mutation over the years to come.

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life Presents - Jeff Saut, Chief Investment Strategist for Capital Wealth Planning

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life Presents - Jeff Saut, Chief Investment Strategist for Capital Wealth Planning

Olde Raleigh Financial's Meet the Masters Video Series https://olderaleighfinancial.com

Jeff Saut - Well, I tried to retire nine months ago and it lasted three weeks. There was such a demand for the strategy letter that I've written for 48 years that we formed an LLC and I got two of my ex colleagues, Andrew Adams, that was my right hand guy. I write on Mondays, he writes on Wednesdays and another ex-colleague Harry Catica writes on Fridays and that's under SWOT strategies that time. And that's gone real well. We haven't really advertised that much and we've got a pretty robust following. And then the association with Capital Wealth just kind of happened. I gave my wife 1 million bucks because I said if I drop over dead, Cheryl doesn't know how to manage money. And we opened an account with Jodie Johnson and Raymond James and she puts some of the money with Capital Wealth and they saw my name on the account and they said, we've been reading this guy for years, we want to talk to him.

So I went down and met with Kevin and the gang down there and I'm not really an employee, I'm more of a consultant, but it's going real well. They've got like the perfect product for, I'd say the 50 year olds in and up. It's five star rated. It's first in its category, a large cap blue chip dividend paying stocks. They had to increase their dividend by at least 15% on a trailing five year basis and then we try to get three and a half percent dividend yield out of the portfolio and then we sell short term one to two months out of the money calls to try and get another three or 4%. So it's never going to outperform. But we were up almost 23% last year. You've got about 85% to 90% upside capture with the markets, but you've only got about 60% to 65% downside capture and you've got somewhere between 5% and 7% a dividend and option distribution. So for somebody like me that's 70 years old, it's like the perfect investment.  What's going to happen in the 2020 market?

Soundtrack to a Financial Advisor's Life Presents - Jacob Gerber, Investment Specialist, Capital Group of American Funds

Olde Raleigh Financial's Meet the Masters Video Series https://olderaleighfinancial.com

Jacob Gerber has been in the business for 21 years, all with American Funds. Early in his career he was a manager of results. The results analysis department. That sounds fascinating. Holds a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of California, Los Angeles.

American Funds Capital Group, is an organization who has one business in mind, that's investing money for clients and to better their lives, with hopefully returning you more than you gave us, so that you can produce outstanding returns and use that money for your needs. And to that end today, we're about $2 trillion in assets. So if you haven't heard of us, that's a good thing, because we're not a bank. We don't put our name on stadiums and baseball stadiums and things of that nature. We put 100% of our energy into producing investment results. I've been with the firm almost 22 years now. And the ethos of the firm really comes from the Midwest actually. Our founder started off in Detroit, came to the West coast, actually called the great depression back in 1928 and left Detroit. If you think about Detroit today versus then, Detroit was the Silicon Valley in the 20s. New cars, automobiles, technology, and he was doing something very unique back in the 20s, with a firm that was called E. E. McCrone. But it was fundamental bottom up research. What does that mean? He actually went to go visit companies that we potentially would invest in. Believe it or not, that was not done in those days. And if you asked me 10 years ago, what's our investment approach, I would've said, Oh, good old fashioned bottom-up research. But today, not to be punchy about it. I would call it a boutique.
