Mehmooni: Art & the source of inspiration, a conversation with Arghavan Khosravi

On this episode of Mehmooni, I speak with the artist @Arghavan_Khosravi

Khosravi earned an MFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design after completing the studio art program at Brandeis University. Khosravi previously earned a BFA in Graphic Design from Tehran Azad University and an MFA in Illustration from the University of Tehran. Khosravi has participated in numerous group exhibitions, at venues such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Yinchuan, China; Newport Art Museum, Newport, RI; and Provincetown Art Association and Museum, MA; among others.

Khosravi’s residencies include the Fine Arts Work Center, Provincetown, MA; the Studios at MassMoCA, North Adams, MA; Monson Arts, Monson, ME; and Residency Unlimited, Brooklyn, NY.

Khosravi is a 2019 recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Painters & Sculptors Grant and a 2017-8 recipient of the Walter Feldman Fellowship. The artist’s work belongs to the collections of the Newport Art Museum and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.

Mehmooni: Persian Rugs & Modern Poets

Mehmooni: Architecture and Acting with Dana Haqjoo

Dana Haqjoo @danahaqjoo is a British-Iranian actor. He is very much the product of dual cultures; possibly one of the reasons why he has dual careers. Dana is both an actor and an architect; managing time between two very different paths.

He initially trained in architecture and after practicing for several years, he decided to pursue an acting career. Something he had always been passionate about. Dana is now working primarily in TV and film as an actor while balancing his other role as the director of a successful London based architectural practice. On this episode we talk about his role in the play The Boy with Two Hearts @thecentre_yganolfan as well as some of the exciting upcoming projects Dana is working on; including his role on #Hapless on @Netflixuk .

Somayeh (@so___mii) is an Iranian born director, editor and photographer. Her work combines her eye for the cinematic moment with her interest in emotive narratives with sound design featuring prominently in her work, blurring the lines between fiction and reality.

Her personal history is often layered into her work, sometimes raw, often poetic. The story of her own heritage and self-identity often becomes interlaced with her subject matter to produce an intimate yet surreal language on-screen. Somayeh is represented by RSA film.

Dr Kashi Azad, is the founder of Persian Yoga (@persianyoga). He is a certified group exercise trainer, personal trainer and a boxing coach with 18 years of teaching experience, Master of Electrical Engineering, MBA graduate and a doctor of Chiropractic.

Persian Yoga is recognised by UNESCO as the world’s oldest running form of martial arts strength condition training. In its country of origin, Iran, Persian Yoga is known as Pahlavāni. Mehmooni: Cultural exchange (Iran & China)

Shutong (@album_of_legends) is an art historian specialising in Islamic and Persian art. She became interested in Islamic Art during her undergraduate studies at the University of St Andrews, then went on to complete two postgraduate degrees in Persian and Islamic art from the Courtauld Institute of Art London and the University of Oxford.

Her research focuses on the cross-cultural artistic exchange between Iran and China. On this episode we talk about art, poetry, Persian medicine and movies. Shutong also shares tips on learning Farsi as a 2nd/3rd language!

Mehmooni: Banni Adam and Aylar (also a welcome back!)

The first episode of the second series will be a little different. Dr. @keyajafari will be the interviewer asking me the questions that you’ve wanted answered. We talk about the story behind @MehmooniPodcast how and why it was started and @Banni_Adam_ . We also discuss my work in architecture and design.

Aylar (@fvrro) is an Architecture graduate, interior designer and creator. She is also the founder of the charity organisation @Banni_Adam_ . Although she has spent almost all of her life living outside Iran, she feels a deep connection to her Iranian roots and heritage.

She has studied fine art at Kingston University in London and has a degree in Architecture from Westminster University in London, UK. She has been invited by Westminster University to assist with the teaching of several Architecture programs as a guest tutor. She has worked for several leading architects both in London and Barcelona. In addition to this, she has exhibited her work at the Design Museum in London, and the Barbican Centre.

In January 2020, Aylar founded @Banni_Adam_ , a clothing brand with the vision of helping those who are most vulnerable in Iran. Aylar hopes to highlight the amazing art and culture of Iran while also helping those in need through Banni Adam.

100% of profits made from sales are donated. Money raised by Banni Adam helps provide basic care packages, medicine and food. In some instances, proceeds go to providing essential white goods for families in need -this includes fridges and hobs.

Mehmooni: Kourosh Ahari on "The Night"

This week on Mehmooni I speak with director, write and producer Kourosh Ahari (@kouroshahari). Kourosh grew up in Iran until the age of 18 and then moved to the US to continue his studies. This has given him a unique perspective that he subtly brings into the world of his films. After moving to the US, he graduated at the top of his university class, receiving the Excellence in Film Directing Award.

His fascination with the human condition/psychology and mining the universe beyond what is generally perceived can be felt at the core of his work. Films Kourosh has worked on have been screened at various prestigious festivals including Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Sitges Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Fest, Napa Valley Film Festival, Edmonton Film Festival, Fajr Film Festival (Iran’s most prestigious film festival) and more.

Most recently Kourosh directed, co-wrote and edited the critically-acclaimed Iranian horror film ‘The Night’ starring Shahab Hosseini. @TheNightMovie became the first US-produced film to receive a license to be released theatrically in Iran since the late 70s. I

Kourosh has also directed the award-winning short ‘Generations’, backed by Tom Hanks and has directed films for immersive new technologies, like Barco Escape’s three-screen cinema technology. He has also produced several short films, including the Iranian short, ‘Numbness’, which has been selected at over 80 film festivals around the world and has won more than 9 awards.

She has portrayed a variety of different characters showcasing her diverse range. Other projects include the short “Foreign”, “Here & Now”, “My Immigrant Family” and #Persianize!

Niousha is currently working on a new project she is writing titled “Blue Flower”.

Mehmooni: A conversation with the author of "Remembering Hope" Parastoo Rezai

This week on Mehmooni I speak with Parastoo Rezai who is the author of the debut novel Remembering Hope (@rememberinghope). She lives in San Diego, California, with her devoted husband, two heart-warming children, and one rambunctious puppy who follows her around like a shadow wherever she may go. Parastoo received her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from UCSD, a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Southern California, and a Master’s degree in Pharmacoeconomics from the University of Florida. For much of her career, Parastoo has worked as a Clinical Pharmacist, serving various disciplines within the profession. When not working, she devotes much of her time to pursue other passions such as reading, writing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Her inspiration for this novel comes from deep empathy for individuals coping with hardships and how triumphing after each struggle is possible if hope continues to reside in our hearts.

Mehmooni: Nazanin Nour & Expressing Creativity

On this episode of Mehmooni I speak with Nazanin Nour (@iamnazaninnour). Nazanin is an actor, writer, voice over artist and she is also one of the wonderful judges on Persia’s got talent. She has also appeared on several tv shows and films, including Madam Secretary and Bad Status.

Her most recent project is a short film titled “All of You”. Which she has starred in and co-written with Shahrzad Davani. “All of You” is about the societal pressures on women with regards to being in a relationship and starting a family.

Mehmooni: A conversation with Mojean Aria

Mojean Aria (@MojeanAria) is an actor, writer, and a director. He is also the founder of the production collective Mystic Makers, a company committed to diverse storytelling.

In late 2017, Mojean accepted the GQ Man of the Year Legacy Award representing Australians in Film. Also in 2017, Mojean Aria was the recipient of the Heath Ledger Scholarship.

Some of his credits include roles on Apple TV’s “SEE”, “Reminiscence”, “The Bronx Bull” and many more.

Mojean has also starred in the highly acclaimed short film “The Suitcase” and human rights film “Aban & Khorshid”.

Mehmooni: Fashion, NFTs, and design with Nima Behnoud of NIMANY

On this episode of Mehmooni I speak with Nima Behnoud (@nimany). The New York-based designer Nima Behnoud was born in Tehran and educated at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He launched his first brand, NIMANY, when still in his 20s with a celebrated series of garments that established his distinctive style incorporating Persian typography in modern, layered designs. NIMANY quickly became known globally for Nima’s successful infusion of Persian motives and contemporary style.

In his 30s, Nima extended this unique design concept into jewelry and handbags, including a ring with the Farsi letter ‘H’ that not only became a perennial best seller but also established the letter as a signature element of his work.

Mehmooni: Filmmaking & Representation with Shayan Ebrahim

On this episode of Mehmooni I speak with Shayan Ebrahim (@shayanebrahim). Shayan is an Iranian-American filmmaker who grew up in Tehran until the age of 15. While attending UCLA, Shayan filmed and edited a documentary called The Drop Box, which went on to win the grand jury prize at SAICFF and was later released theatrically, becoming one of the highest grossing movies in Fathom Events history.

Since then, he has edited another theatrical feature film called The Dating Project, as well as nationally-broadcast commercials for companies such as Google, iHeart Radio, and Volkswagen. He has also written and directed several award-winning short films and viral Persian sketch videos. Most recently, he was hired to adapt a New York Times bestselling novel into an animated film.

Mehmooni: The Norouz Episode with Dr. Ashkon

On this episode of Mehmooni I speak with Ashkon Seyed-Safi. Ashkon is a medical student studying in London. He has studied pre-clinical medicine at Cambridge University and is now completing his clinical studies at UCL. Although he took some time off to complete a PhD in the middle studying the behaviour of stem cells at the front of the eye. In the future he hopes to become an eye surgeon.

We talk about Norouz, and Ashkon’s experience growing up with both Persian and English culture at home.

Mehmooni: Community & Entrepreneurship with Iman

On this episode of ‘Mehmooni’ I speak with serial entrepreneur and producer Iman Huschmand (@imanhuschmand)

He holds a Bachelor’s degree and dual Masters degrees in business from the University of Maryland. In 2009, stemming from his roots as a DJ during his academic years, his love for music and passion for entertaining influenced the launch of his full service production company, Exclusively Entertainment.(@exclusivelyentertainment) The company has been an integral part of nearly 3500 events, including more than 1000 weddings and over 300 multi-cultural events and concerts globally.

To name a few, Iman has also been the producer of the Miss Iran Pageant, Star Musician (Persian version of American Idol), unique bridal shows and has hosted the tours of legendary international bands such as Modern Talking and Alabina.

Recently, Iman’s success and as he notes, failures, fuelled his desire to guide and inspire other entrepreneurs, which led to the launch of Unite & Conquer (@letsuniteandconquer). With more than two decades under their belt, Iman and his experienced team specialise in brand therapy and content creation for modern day entrepreneurs.

He is also the owner of Night Owls (@nightowlsofficial), a photo and video production company that captures events and weddings with a modern style.

Currently, Iman produces and hosts the podcast and YouTube series “AWESOME People” which showcases individuals he respects, admires and is inspired by. His hope is that the authentic virtual conversations he has ranging from super stars to inspiring individuals, encourages viewers to unlock the greatest version of themselves.
