Dr Abeyna is a Consultant Occupation Health Physician and the founder of Medic Footprints, a social impact organisation connecting doctors with alternative careers and wellbeing support.

In this episode, we discuss the challenges she faced during her journey and how she overcame this and used the lessons learned into creating a successful organisation. We delve into the realities of being a doctor in the NHS and explore the culture that prevents doctors from exploring careers outside of medicine.

Melanin Medics presents the sixth and final conversation of ‘Why I fell in love with Medicine’ Black History Month Podcast series. 

We speak to Professor Kevin Fenton who is currently a regional director in London, Public Health England. He has also held multiple exemplary roles prior to his current position. Professor Kevin Fenton has been prominent throughout the pandemic and is likely to remain so over the next year. He has highlighted the low uptake of COVID vaccinations in London and led consultation with Black and minority ethnic communities as part of a government review on the disparities in risks and outcomes in COVID.

In this episode, he describes his experience coming the the UK to practice medicine after completing his studies in Jamaica. Prof Fenton also gives us an insight into how he has successfully navigated a career in public health that has encompassed Jamaica, US and the UK. Lastly, we discussed how his background has played a part as he has navigated these different spaces.

Melanin Medics presents the fourth conversation of ‘Why I fell in love with Medicine’ Black History Month Podcast series.

We speak to Obi Jude Nzeako (@drjude_) who is a consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in South West London with specialist interests in Trauma and Upper Limb. He graduated from the University of Manchester with an elective at Yale, he then completed his foundation and Orthopaedic Surgical Training programme in London before moving to complete fellowship training in Trauma and upper limb Surgery at the University of Toronto in Canada, then at Guy’s & St Thomas Hospital in London. 

He is a passionate teacher, who enjoys speaking and writing within his field. He is active on social media through Instagram and Youtube, where he aims to inspire, teach and motivate.

In this episode, he describes his love for medicine and focused journey into Orthopaedic surgery.  Listen in as we address how to truly succeed as a black surgical trainee, the importance of mentorship, how to foster healthy habits and ways to avoid the (dreaded) burn out.

Melanin Medics presents the third conversation of “Why I Fell in Love with Medicine” Black History Month Podcast.

We are joined by (Ms) Christine Mitoko as she details her delightful path of falling in love with medicine. Christine is a Kenyan-born academic who has completed a PhD in Paediatric Neuro-Oncology and is a Specialist Registrar in Neurosurgery. 

She has a passion for learning, teaching, and mentoring. She also loves running, travelling, eating, and works towards a black belt in Tae Kwon Doe. Christine also serves as an Academia Officer within the Melanin Medics Team.

Melanin Medics presents the second conversation of ‘Why I fell in love with Medicine’ Black History Month Podcast series. 

We speak to Temitope Fisayo about why he fell in love with medicine. Temitope Fisayo is a final-year medical student at King's College London. He also holds a master's degree from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His clinical interests include paediatrics, infectious diseases, dermatology, and global health. He is also fascinated by anthropology, sociology, and philosophy. Alongside his studies, he sits on the BMA's Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Advisory Committee. 

In this episode, he describes his love for medicine and for literature and the way he views medicine through this lens. We also explore mechanisms that he has found to help sustain his love for medicine throughout medical school and as he prepares to begin his medical career.

We launch our new podcast series this Black History Month with Dr Olamide Dada, our Founder and Chief Executive of Melanin Medics. 

She describes her journey into medicine and lessons learnt so far. Dr Dada is a UK Medical School graduate and current junior doctor in the South East of England. She has aspirations of becoming a General Practitioner with a special interest in leadership, race and health inequalities. Her accolades are many but notwithstanding her alumnus status at the Healthcare Leadership Academy and being awarded the prestigious RARE Rising Star Award at the House of Commons.
