The Four Agreements For a Fulfilled Life: Book Insights on The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
* This global bestseller aims to help us break free from the personal agreements that we have tacitly accepted which create limitations and unhappiness. * The Toltec way of life, as Ruiz elucidates in his timeless book, is an antidote to the modern world. In life there are actually no leaders, and no followers. We are the masters of our own dreams, and we must regain our freedom. * Follow the four agreements, escape the self-inflicted world of judgement, condemnation, punishment, fear, anger and guilt, and experience a rapid transformation of all aspects of your life. Theme 1: Be Impeccable with Your Word - 0:29 Theme 2: Nothing Personal - 8:47 Theme 3: Always do Your Best - 18:32 Like what you hear? Be sure to like & subscribe to support this podcast! Book Insights are formal, structured summary, analysis and exploration of a bestselling nonfiction book. Each episode is read by a professional voice actor and will introduce a new title selected specifically for its value to your work and life.  Book Lounge episodes are casual discussions about the book, the author, and anything else that comes along through the course of conversation. It’s more of a broad chat about how the book relates to current, everyday life. Should I listen to both the Book Insight and the Book Lounge episode on the same book? Sure! Each episode works fine as a standalone piece, so no requirement to listen to both or to listen in any particular order, but we definitely recommend (and think you’ll enjoy!) both. Think of it like reading a book and liking it so much you want to chat about it on the porch with a friend. That is the vibe at the Book Lounge. Like what you hear? Brené Brown on the Value of Vulnerability: Book Insights on Daring Greatly by Brené Brown
*A culture in which so many people believe they are not enough – not successful enough, thin enough, powerful enough, smart enough, extraordinary enough, or certain enough – is a “culture of scarcity”, Brown writes in Daring Greatly.  *Preoccupied by what society perceives to be deficiencies, we find it a challenge to say “I am worthy.”  And we find it difficult to take risks, social, emotional, and professional.  *Yet accepting our vulnerability and viewing it as a strength – learning to “dare greatly,” or dare anything at all – is the only way we can become what we were meant to be. The Making of Millionaires: Book Insights on The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J Stanley & William S Danko
*Based on in-depth interviews with more than 500 American millionaires, plus over a thousand surveys made up of more than 200 questions, The Millionaire Next Door yields some surprising findings.  *Even its authors, business academics Thomas Stanley and William Danko, were taken aback to discover that the majority of millionaires weren’t holed up in luxurious mansions surrounded by extravagant purchases.  *The pair investigated not just your common-or-garden variety of millionaire (who are increasingly common), but ‘decamillionaires’, those whose net worth exceeds $10 million.  *They identified seven common traits that show up again and again among the super-wealthy. Many live modestly, right next door rather than in Beverly Hills or on Park Avenue, they work hard and they save assiduously.  *The conclusion that the authors ultimately draw is that consumption and opulence pale in comparison to the peace of mind that comes from fulfilling work and the discipline of slowly building up a nest egg over time. Educated: Tara Westover's Harrowing Autobiography: Book Insights on Educated by Tara Westover

How Habits Help (and Harm!): Book Insights on Atomic Habits by James Clear
* Upending the received self-help wisdom that success is founded on setting and accomplishing your goals, James Clear focuses instead on the power of minuscule habits to transform your life.  * Goals may be useful tools for identifying a destination to work towards, but systems of behavior – or habits – are the vehicles that get you to where you want to go.  * Minor changes brought on by focusing on systems of habit will cause gradual improvements that are unnoticeable from day to day, but incredible over time.  * These “atomic habits” are small-scale but they will also come to represent the building blocks of your success, as Clear demonstrates with inspiring stories from the worlds of sport, business and academia, and his own life.  * By designing, implementing, reviewing, and perfecting your habits, you can harness the power of continuous, compounding improvement to reach your true potential and realize your ideal self. How to Harness The Power of Now: Book Insight on The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
* By focusing on the present moment as our route to consciousness we can free ourselves from the stress, fear and anxiety that are created by our mind. * Suffering is identification with Mind. Our analytical mind has created a false ‘self’ – the ego – which we must jettison in order to find enlightenment. * When we surrender to the power of the present moment, the now, we are at one with Being and openness. * We can connect with joy and our true selves, unfettered by binary constructs such as ‘past’ and ‘future’. Yet popular blogger Newport says this reasoning has it backwards. * Long hours spent on social media, staring at a phone during dates and family reunions, or texting while driving – these are abnormal, extreme behaviors. People just normally don’t see them this way, because they’ve become so common. * We have to rethink our relationships with digital devices. Newport introduces the theoretical principles behind digital minimalism and the process of digital declutter. * It’s a manifesto for reclaiming your time and your life from the online giants that make fortunes from your attention. Theme 1: How digital life got out of Control - 0:29 Theme 2: Declutter Your Digital Life - 9:07 Theme 3: The Life You Could Be Having - 20:15 Like what you hear? From the Founding Father of Capitalism: Book Insights on The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
* Ten years in the writing, published in 1776 and still considered a cornerstone of economic thought, The Wealth of Nations provides a recipe for national prosperity that has not been bettered since. Adam Smith, a Scottish professor of moral philosophy, assumes zero knowledge of his subject in the reader, and over 200 years on still delivers valuable lessons on basic economics. * His vision of economic liberalism, based on small government and the freedom of citizens to act in their best interests, was revolutionary at the time. This was the dawn of a new industrial age, and the nature of government needed to change quickly to keep pace. * The Wealth of Nations struck a chord as it pointed to the principle of ‘natural liberty’, which puts faith in the ingenuity of citizens to pursue their economic destinies with a minimum of government interference. * Smith argued that the ‘invisible hand’ of the free market made sure that the honest labors of individuals, making good use of a country’s resources, would result in a prosperous and successful society. Find Your 1 Thing: Book Insights on The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan
* The One Thing is a deceptively simple title – this is not just another “how I did it” business autobiography, but a theory of success supported by academic studies that can be applied to both work and home life.  * Though the book’s focus is simplicity itself – the power of focus –  it makes many points that are far from obvious, and exposes quite a few myths that are likely to have held you back from success.  * When you consider people who achieve great things, their success often involves a paradox. They are able to get more done, with greater effect, because they “go small,” that is, they narrow their focus to the single thing they must do, if every other thing they would like to happen would fall into place. How Growth Mindset Can Change Your Life: Book Insights on Mindset by Carol Dweck
* Carol Dweck's Mindset: The New Psychology of Success is a very influential book in the field of social psychology.  * It contrasts the ‘fixed’ mindset with the ‘growth’ mindset. With a growth mindset, we see our natural traits or abilities simply as a starting point, and through experience, effort and learning move towards what we want to do or be.  * Our IQ or personality form part of our potential only, rather than restricting us. Life is about the excitement of wondering how far we can go by developing our interests and skills to the max. If the fixed mindset sees our qualities as carved in stone, the growth mindset sees them as a moveable feast.  * Each puts us on quite different paths of thought and action. Dweck’s research shows how the unspoken beliefs we have can affect our chances for self-confidence, happiness and success. Entrepreneurship Myths - Busted!: Book Insights on The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber
* When Michael Gerber’s The E-Myth was first published in 1986, the internet was but a glimmer in the eye of Tim Berners-Lee.  * The revised version, The E-Myth Revisited, may have come out in the 21st century, just, but 2001 was still too early for the text to contain any mention of internet pioneers like Mark Zuckerberg or wildly successful YouTubers.  * Nevertheless, this business classic has much to offer entrepreneurs, whether digital revolutionaries or brick-and-mortar store owners.  * Gerber guides readers through the life cycle of a business, from infancy to maturity, and draws the key distinction between working on your business and working in it.  * With more than 25,000 small and emerging business owners as clients, and over two million copies of the book sold, Gerber’s small business theories have stood the test of time. * Discover how to secure your financial future in one simple step, no matter how much you earn – paying yourself a regular set amount. This is the ‘automatic’ of the title.  * Bach isn’t offering a finger-click, instant wealth generator, but he shows that by paying yourself first, you can lay the foundations for future wealth and security.  * Stay in your job and amass wealth slowly through automatic saving, the effect of compounding over time, riding out any stock market peaks and troughs, and benefit from tax rules that favor ‘those who help themselves’. Turn Obstacles into Opportunities: Book Insights on The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday
* A formula for success which has been used for centuries, by emperors, military commanders, athletes, presidents and entrepreneurs, the quiet grace and forbearance espoused by the ancient Stoics may seem at odds with today’s brash, dog-eat-dog world.  * Ryan Holiday draws on the ancient philosophy of Stoicism, which was founded in Greece in the early 3rd century, to show how this approach can be applied effectively to twenty-first-century life.  * Mastering the three critical elements of perception, action, and will opens up an eminently pragmatic way to confront any obstacles, and gain power, peace of mind and success. Are You Manifesting Prosperity? Book Insights on Open Your Mind to Prosperity by Catherine Ponder
*A classic guide to welcoming wealth and well-being into your life from the doyenne of prosperity thinking.  *Ponder explains how to rid yourself of the psychological blocks hampering your progress, allowing you to clear your mind and create a spiritual bedrock for future success and happiness.  *Drawing on a range of sources – the Bible, New Thought philosophers, esoteric teachings – she creates an easily digestible guide to the ‘prosperity laws.’  *At the same time, the warmth of her writing conveys a sense of peace: troubles are put into perspective, and the heart lifts on reading the stories of people who experienced a prosperity miracle when they had known only hard times.  *Yet Ponder’s words are pragmatic, not simply escapist, providing the tools to take your life to a new level, if you are willing to open your mind to the spiritual side of prosperity. Hear what they love it about, what they don’t, how they rate it, and how it can advance your work and life. This week, Tom and Karin offer you insight on: *How to inspire your team by modeling taking responsibility and being accountable even when it would be easy to shift blame on someone else. *Even as a professional personal fitness coach, with clients wanting to work solely with him, Chris still finds a way to delegate and equip leaders through his business. *Applying Extreme Ownership's military principles apply to parenting, career, relationships and many other walks of life. Show Notes: https://www.instagram.com/chris_puck_33/ https://linktr.ee/chris_puck_33 What is the difference between Book Insights episodes and Book Lounge episodes? Meet Jane Jacobs: A Woman Who Changed the World: Book Insights on The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs
* Despite a lack of experience in city planning or even a college degree, Jane Jacobs picked apart the figures and philosophies responsible for what she viewed as the downfall of American cities.  * Taking aim at those focused on aesthetically pleasing and cutting-edge cities, Jacobs exposed these models as part of a deeply flawed system that only stymies urban living.  * In redefining the relevance of sidewalks, parks, city blocks, and much more, The Death and Life of American Cities became arguably the most single influential work in the history of city planning. The Marvels of the Mind: Book Insights on The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks
* In this collection of remarkable case studies, physician and neurology professor Oliver Sacks introduces us to the bewildering world of the brain and its disorders.  * From patients afflicted with frenzied tics, and those who can no longer recognize familiar faces and objects, to others who have lost great swathes of their memories, Sacks permits the reader a greater understanding of the often bizarre world of the neurologically impaired.  * He describes with great compassion and humanity the nuances of each case, and the steps he could sometimes take to address the wildly varying conditions.  * The emotions and personality of the patient, rather than the abstract symptoms, he argues, must be central to any treatment – it is essential to never lose sight of the individual, the ‘I’ tragically obscured by neurological disease. Are You Being Manipulated?: Book Insights on Influence by Robert Cialdini
* Influence is the ability to change the minds and actions of others in a way that they are willing to accept. * Cialdini identifies half a dozen “weapons of influence”, ways of getting us to act automatically that sidestep our normal rational decision-making processes. These are used by professionals and salespeople to get us to say ‘yes’ without thinking. * They include: reciprocation, commitment and consistency; social proof; liking; authority; and scarcity. Each are easily triggered. * By being aware of the trigger, we can see them for what they are and avoid being taken in ourselves. Great Memory = Great Success: Book Insights on Moonwalking With Einstein by Joshua Foer
* Joshua Foer sets out to answer the question: "Can anyone develop a brilliant memory?"  * Foer learns the tricks of the trade from mnemonic masters and ‘mental athletes’ and ultimately earns the title of 2006 US Memory champion. Not bad after only a year’s preparation.  * Alongside the entertaining tale of rising to this challenge, Foer shows how memory built modern civilization, and is the driver of personal success and creativity.  * As the subtitle of the book suggests, memorization is both science and art – high-level memorizing is an ancient art, but science now shows how it works neurologically. It gives us power and allows for great learning.  * Our individual memory banks are what make us human. Seneca's Stoic Wisdom for Modern Life: Book Insights on Letters to Lucilius by Seneca
* The historian Tacitus described the events surrounding Seneca’s death in a way that made him into a Stoic hero, facing his own death with total equanimity despite the injustice of the situation.   * It was through lifelong training in Stoic philosophy that he achieved this state of mind.  * Throughout the centuries, Seneca has been admired as one of the greatest writers of antiquity.  * He has a way of expressing Stoic philosophy that makes it seem eminently practical and just as relevant to life today as it was two thousand years ago.  * He taught that we should remain grounded in the present moment by paying attention to the here and now of experience.  * This was only possible by being fully aware of the impermanence of life, visualizing the worst that could happen, and preparing for our own death. Book Lounge - The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by John Gottman & Nan Silver with Guest Stephanie Coontz
Today in the Book Lounge, Tom & Karin discuss the book The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work with special guest Stephanie Coontz.   Each week Book Insights creator and author of The 50 Classics Series Tom Butler-Bowdon and Memo’d Program Manager Karin Richey invite you to join their fun and casual conversation about the book of the week. Hear what they love it about, what they don’t, how they rate it, and how it can advance your work and life. You’ll learn why it was selected to be part of the curated list of Book Insights, and what’s new with the book or the author currently.   This week, Tom and Karin offer you insight on:   *Historian, gender and marriage researcher Stephanie Coontz dispels marriage myths and offers her insights on gender roles as they relate to marriage and Gottman's book.   *Hear about the destructive power of the harsh startup, the value of moving towards bids for connection and the "deal-breakers" that make some marriages unworkable.   *Marriage in light of the COVID-19 pandemic as it relates to home schooling, housework and how couples' division of labor impacts the marriage (for better and worse).    What is the difference between Book Insights episodes and Book Lounge episodes? Dr. Gottman's 7 Principles to Save (or Strengthen) Your Marriage: Book Insights on The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by John M. Gottman and Nan Silver
* When John Gottman began researching marriage in the early 1970s, there was little scientific data on the factors that make it work.   * Counsellors depended on conventional wisdom, opinion, intuition, religious beliefs or the ideas of psychologists.    * The result? Not much effectiveness. Using quantitative research based on direct observation of couples, Gottman identified consistent patterns in what causes marriages to fail – and, more importantly, patterns that enable them to succeed.   * The good news: you don’t have to agree on everything, you don’t have to change who you are and you don’t need to change them.   * If you value your marriage, and are willing to commit to it, there is no reason why you can’t save it.   Theme 1: Let Go of the Myths - 0:27 Theme 2: Nurture the Friendship and How to Deal with Conflict - 11:50 Theme 3: Most Marriages Can be Saved - 24:05 Like what you hear? Small Actions for Big Results: Book Insight on The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson
* When his solar energy business crashed and burned, Jeff Olson had an epiphany.  *When people have their backs to the wall, he saw, they will do anything to lift themselves up again, with often awe-inspiring effort.  * But when they do pull themselves up again, something happens: they relax a bit and start drifting again toward failure.  * When they get low, once again they pull themselves up.  * The cycle of failure/survival/success can continue across a person’s lifetime, causing endless confusion and heartache.  * Olson describes how to break that cycle, identifying the simple things – the small daily decisions and habits that add up to your ‘slight edge’, the very opposite of the fabled ‘big break’ – which over time can give you a massive advantage and take you to new heights in work and life.
