Making an Impact: Mayor Thomas McNamara on Public Service and Community Engagement
MENtality Unchained host Kevin Thomas sat down with Thomas McNamara, the Mayor of the City of Rockford, IL. It was an open dialogue about the state of the city and the community. He talked about the impact he hoped to have made within the last term and how he continues to support and push grassroots projects. Mayor explained his passion and reasoning behind his continuous mental health initiatives. The mayor provided a candid view of what he sees within the Rockford community regarding the separatism in the city. He explains his subjective viewpoint of the barriers that plague the quality of life within the various sides of town, specifically, the Westside. The mayor believes that the city of Rockford is destined for greatness as businesses are being attracted to the area and an influx of entrepreneurship and development.

John speaks of being told by teachers that he was “good with his hands” which impressed upon him that he wasn’t good enough for anything else. This implied that he did not have the mental focus, cognitive capacity, or scholarly intelligence to be anything else.
