Depending on what state and/or city within that state, how much do you need to make to be able to rent a decent apartment if you have not purchased a home yet? 2. Does your current job(s), independent contracting work or business you run providing enough income to pay for your cost of living? Economic planning is vitally important if we are going to survive and thrive in this job market. Is Tesla a Progressive Employer?
We will discuss the current news articles being written about Tesla and the treatment of their employees in 2023. 1. What can we learn from what is being written?
2. Would you consider them a progressive employer based on the information presented?
3. What can career professionals like ourselves need to do to alleviate issues with employers that are not progressive?
Progressive employers treat their employees, their human resources well because they are valuable. The mere fact that this #hostileworkenvironment went on for more than 8 years is repulsive to me as an HR professional!

Season 2 Episode 143: Make Lemonade Out of Lemons. Layoffs Are Not All Bad
Take Stock of Your Strengths and Weaknesses
When a layoff happens, it’s natural for us to ask ourselves why it happened. This self-reflection can be uncomfortable, but it’s also necessary for personal growth. Try thinking about what strengths you brought to the table (e.g., hard work ethic, creative problem-solving skills) and what weaknesses you may have had (e.g., the inability to work in teams, too much perfectionism). This will give you a better understanding of where your strengths and weaknesses lie so that you can start building on them going forward. We also have a FREE Resource, our DREAM Career Tool to help you document your professional strengths. Go Here to grab it.
Think Creatively About Future Opportunities
It can be tempting to think that the only job opportunities available are those that are directly related to our current career path—but this isn't always true! Layoffs offer a chance for us to step outside of our comfort zones and think more creatively about potential future roles. For example, if your background is in marketing, maybe now is the time to look into jobs in sales or customer service instead? Or if your background is in finance, could there be opportunities out there for you in project management? Keeping an open mind about the types of roles that could potentially suit your skill set will help broaden your horizons—and ultimately increase your chances of finding a good job fit! Understand you have skills that are transferable to other career paths, don't rule anything out.
Learn How To Network Effectively
Networking is essential for career success—and layoffs provide an opportunity for us learn how to do it effectively! The key here is not just connecting with people who are already in positions of power—it's also about connecting with those who have similar interests or who work in the same field as you do. Take advantage of social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook groups; attend industry events; reach out to former colleagues; and take every chance you get to make meaningful connections with people who share similar interests or experiences as yours. Growing your network will allow new doors of opportunity open up over time! Do you have the necessary tools to network? Do you have your business or introductory cards to hand out to people when you meet them? It's always best to be ready, so you won't have to get ready.
In many ways, layoffs can be seen as an opportunity rather than something negative. By taking stock of our strengths and weaknesses, thinking creatively about future opportunities, and learning how to network effectively we can use layoffs as a stepping stone towards greater success both professionally and personally! So remember: when life gives you lemons – make lemonade! To take your lemons and make lemonade, action is required. We want to have what you need and the direction necessary to cultivate your own career success after the negative effects of this layoff. If you are ready to take the necessary steps, let us work with you directly by you clicking here, so we can this layoff be the best thing that happen to your career. You can connect with you by leaving a voicemail for me by clicking the gray tab on this page.

Episode 134: StoryTime Career Series – Episode 2: Toxic Work Environment
This is second of the StoryTime Series on my podcast and YouTube channel sharing stories of all of our experiences in the world of careers, jobs, contract work, independent consulting and business interactions. In the second episode, I share one of my experiences while working in a toxic environment. The names, dates and other information were kept confidential to protect the innocent or guilty party.
The objective is the learn and grow from our professional and personal experiences to become a better version of ourselves, professionally. This particular story hits home and taught me so much about myself and the level of restraint I earned during that time. If it wasn't for a great friend talking me off the proverbial ledge on a weekly basis, I probably would have been arrested for physical assaults and verbal altercations. The tension was thick and my stress level went through the roof! I am grateful to have survived it without loosing my composure.
What did I learn from this experience? I learned that people and their preconceived notions are so strong, it allowed them to spread malicious lies about other people's character. Keep in mind, they never took the time to get to know the individual but somehow felt entitled to assume things about people. Needless to say, the very sword those people intended to injury others, they ended up falling the same swords.
I learned corporations set up "certain people" for failure. For example, training some employees on the 25% - 30% of their duties while training other employees on 90% of their duties. They followed up by measuring each employee's job performance without the same level of detailed training. So the employee with 30% of the training will never perform at the level of the employee that received 90% of the training. When questioned about why the training levels are different when the expectation of performance is the same, you receive responses like "training is a privilege".
I learned that we all have a choice with the work environment we choose to spend our time. In my case, this employer terminated me for job performance, when I received less than 50% of the necessary training to be successful. It was the second termination from a job that I felt relief! The relief of not ever setting foot in that toxic environment.
If you find yourself having to self-talk your way into the doors of your job every morning...just so you don't want the entire place to explode while you're on a lunch break...It's time to get a concrete career plan specifically tailored to you leaving that toxic environment for GOOD! Episode 130: Why your career success is YOUR responsibility
You didn't expect your parents to make you successful as an adult did you? Your parents have done their job of raising you to be a responsible adult....now it's time to show them what and how you can use all the great principles of adulthood to good use.
As I'm writing this, I also realize that not everyone had the same upbringing or even had parents to teach them about being responsible adults. You have had to learn quite a bit about life on your own, so I understand.
I want all of you to know...no matter your background, past or circumstances, the success or failure you achieve in life is completely and totally, your responsibility and within your control. Once you reach the ripe old age of eighteen (18), you are officially an adult. If your parents or anyone else helps you financially, economically or in any way, it's a bonus. Be grateful! They are not obligated to help you, so if they do...please do not take it for granted and show some gratitude.
The heights of your #career and #business ventures are completely in your arsenal of control. I want you to take charge of your destiny, but I want you to know something extremely vital. You must have FOCUS and you must HAVE A PLAN to keep your overall career and business development focus in check.
If you do not have a plan or still trying to figure your next career move, then I can certainly help you with that...I have a guide that help you get focused and create a plan for your career venture or business development. You can access the DREAM CAREER GUIDE by going here.

Episode 129: Interview Question - Why Should I Hire You?
In a typical job interview, you are getting questions like, "Why should I hire you?" to specifically evaluate how you can sell yourself, your skills, knowledge base and qualifications to meet and exceed their business needs for the position. In this episode, I provide a few examples of how you can respond to this question showing the interviewer you did your thorough research on the company and their immediate need to get this position filled and how you can meet those needs.
If you're not prepared for your next interview, this question can fluster you and how you respond. I urge you to be fully prepared to respond these and other challenging questions during your next job interview. Your responses can mean the difference between getting the job offer or never speaking to this employer again.
To help you prepare for your next interview, I have an audio series that uncovers 7 ways to dominate in your next job interview. You can grab a copy of the audio series here at https://mentorshelly.com/services/interview-help.

Episode 127: Summary Paragraph - Needed on RESUME
Your SUMMARY STATEMENTS (Summary Paragraph)
So, you’re asking me, what is a summary statement on a resume. It is a one to three statements communicating your specific years of expertise, knowledge base and skills relevant to the industry or position(s) for which you are applying. This paragraph should mention specific key words associated with the actual position, so it may change frequently based on the position(s). If you are over the age of forty years old, you may have some familiarity with the “OBJECTIVE” on a resume. The summary paragraph took the place of the objective and communicated more efficiently with the employer about what you have to offer.
Now, this summary paragraph gave the employer a snapshot of what my client’s skills, their capabilities and their years of experience accomplishing the goals in their role. Now, keep in mind, the rest of the resume should quantify all the statements in the summary paragraph but it paints a great picture of my client so far.
By the way, does your resume have a summary paragraph helping to sell your skills, knowledge base, experience and qualification? If not, then a couple of resources to help you with that. If you’re looking to have your resume reviewed to see if it is working for you…then check out my first resource at https://mentorshelly.com/services/toolsreview.
