You Can Go Now

You Can Go Now

Shannon Hough. She has worn multiple hats as it relates to the military and veteran communities. She’s a military brat (dad served in the Army), she served in the U.S. Navy and is a married to a now retired Army serviceman). If that isn't enough of an understanding of the military life, Shannon Hough is also the mother of a service member. Having a daughter serving in the U.S. Marine Corps (Sempere Fi) Shannon Hough has experienced life tied to various branches of the military as well as different roles (daughter, wife, service member, veteran, and mother. Sounds to me like there's not much of a perspective she won't understand. Which is why you won't hear me say, "Shannon, you just don't get it," because...well, why would I? She would probably tell me, "Okay, Tiffany, you can go now." That's not why this episode has the title that it does. You'll have to hear explain this title.

Shannon Hough has also served as a mayor - TWICE! Not two consecutive seats. Not in the say city or even same state. The first place she was a mayor was while she and her husband live in California. They've since moved to Wisconsin (Cheese Head!) where she also served as mayor in smalltown, USA. If that isn't enough political affiliation, Shannon has also served as a congressional staff member and as a city administrator. Shannon holds an MPA and MBA from Norwich University.

It sounds to me like there isn't much Shannon can't do! But herstory doesn't end there. There's so much more to her story. Shannon endured a...tell you what...I don't want to tell her story her in the show notes. It's her story to tell, not me.
While Shannon was serving as a congressional staffer, she encountered several service members who needed help dealing with their own trauma - similar to her own. As it is with many people who decided to create a nonprofit or helping organization, Shannon Hugh founded "Shield of Sisters" as a way to help her sisters in service - the numerous lady veterans that endured MST.

Shannon’s passion is helping others find restoration and supporting her sister service members. She is an avid reader, loves to cook and spend time with her family, including her dog Zeus.

"When I decided to create Shield of Sisters, I was broken. I had dealt with my trauma for over 30 years. Some would say that I had no issues, I have been fairly successful in my life. I was
surviving; I wanted to thrive. I was tired of letting my past dictate my present and future. I contacted various people to see what we could do to change not only my path but the paths of my sisters. The restoration retreat created a new way of thinking for me. You may ask, how can 2.5 days change years of pain? It does! I went into the retreat a bit skeptical and came out 2.5 days later
ready to share this breakthrough with my fellow sisters who have survived MST. You’re not in this alone." – Shannon Hough

Rethinking Traumatic Brain Injury with Dr. Mark Gordon

Rethinking Traumatic Brain Injury with Dr. Mark Gordon

Dr. Mark L. Gordon is an endocrinologist in Magnolia, Texas. He received his medical degree from Universidad de Guadalajara and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Endocrinologists treat hormone-related conditions, which most commonly include diabetes, thyroid disease, pituitary gland issues and hormonal imbalances.
Since 2004, Dr. Mark Gordon has spearheaded the application of the science now being used to address and treat individuals suffering with neuropsychiatric illnesses brought on by trauma and mental stress. The insidious damage caused by traumatic brain injury has emerged from the shadows and is receiving the medical focus it requires. Much of this change has occurred due to two of the main victims of traumatic brain injury—soldiers returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and impact sports that include football and boxing.
Of course, civilians also incur traumatic brain injury from automobile accidents, falls, and assaults. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 3 to 5 millionAmericans are living with traumatic brain injury-related disability. Current medical practice has little to provide these victims, who may go on to suffer cognitive problems ranging from dizziness and headaches to depression and dementia throughout their lifetime. Mark Gordon, MD, has successfully treated both veterans and civilians with traumatic brain injury by restoring neurosteroid levels. Working with veterans who have sustained significant combat injuries to the brain, Dr. Gordon has restored wholeness to their lives. Hopefully, his innovative work with neurosteroids will find its way into mainstream medicine to help the millions suffering with traumatic brain injury.

Veteran’s Day 2023

The transition from military service to civilian life can be a complex and challenging journey. For many veterans, it involves not only adjusting to a different lifestyle but also dealing with the physical, mental and spiritual wounds that often result from their service. This Veterans Day, I hope Americans will be willing to take a closer look at the difficulties that many veterans face, and more deeply appreciate their sacrifices and for what they sacrificed. Port security is one aspect of Maritime Coastal Operations conducted to ensure the maritime security of the nation. Port Inspection Divers often work in conjunction with naval port security teams to provide underwater skill sets in support of the sovereignty and safety of Canada’s numerous ports, harbors, and waterways, and may also be deployed outside Canada for operations or exercises. In addition to their main responsibilities as Port Inspection Divers, they must also carry out several tasks in support of diving activities such as driving inflatable boats and specialized dive vehicles, preparing dive sites, maintaining dive-related equipment, and conducting general and diving-related administration including forward logistics for operations. For more information on their roles and responsibilities, check out this link: (https://forces.ca/en/career/port-inspection-diver/)

Kate Stewart has been part of one of these groups for the past 5 years. Memorial Day 2023

Memorial Day 2023

If you were asked to provide an answer on the spot, would you be able to explain the difference between Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, and Veteran’s, would you be able to? On Aug. 31, 1949, Defense Secretary Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the armed forces under one agency -- the Department of Defense.
Note: As enacted, S. 1160 is Public Law 89-487 (80 Stat. 250). The statement was released at San Antonio, Texas.

Resiliency Shield: Breaking "Impossible" Goals into Achievable Goals

'I had seen dozens of people die horrible deaths ... This time was different. This time it was a friend of mine dying in the dirt in front of me, and it was my job to save him.'

Dan Pronk is the author of three bestselling books, a regular keynote speaker, and the resident medic on the hit TV Show, SAS Australia. After failing dismally in his first career dream of being a professional triathlete, he studied medicine on an army scholarship. Upon qualifying as a doctor, he passed the SASR selection course and served five years in Special Operations, including four tours of Afghanistan with 100+ combat missions.

Learn more about Dan Pronk

During his years with Army Special Operations, Dan Pronk had the unique opportunity to treat dozens of gunshot wounds. In his memoir, Pronk describes the highs and lows of his military-medical career, with the real toll they took on his mental health and family life. He writes about the burden of saving - and failing to save - friends and comrades, the feelings of helplessness and despair that haunted me, and the journey back to a meaningful and fulfilling civilian life. This memoir is a tribute to the doctors, medics, and first responders working behind the scenes in conflict around the world.

The Mission Focused Mindset: Perseverance

The Mission Focused Mindset: Perseverance

We are only limited by the things we allow to limit us. The keys to success and productivity are already in your pocket. You just need someone to show you the lock and encourage you to open the door. Who would have thought that a woman who pioneered a path for women in the military - excelling at what she did as an Air Force A-10 (Warhog) Pilot could ever struggle with confidence or imposter syndrome?
LTC Tammy Barlette (USAF, LTC, Retired) is a mindset and performance expert who specializes in the art of perseverance. As a retired Lieutenant Colonel and fighter pilot, who has faced many challenges herself, she takes lessons learned from the high-performance cockpit and relates them to the challenges of life. She has flown multiple aircraft, including the T-37 Tweet, T-38 Talon, A-10 Warthog, MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper, accumulating more than 3000 total flying hours.

After an aircraft injury required cervical spine reconstruction, Tammy transitioned to the Arizona Air National Guard. She flew the MQ-1 Predator and the MQ-9 Reaper, accumulating over 1500 hours of combat support time in both Iraq and Afghanistan assisting and protecting troops on the ground, providing real-time reconnaissance and lethal support. During this time Tammy also graduated from the prestigious US Air Force Weapons School. Desiring to get back into a high-performance aircraft and having a passion to teach, Tammy then transitioned to the Air Force Reserves, instructing in the T-38 Talon for the last 6 years of her 20-year military career. Her focus was on balancing family life as a married mother of three with instructing in the fast-paced environment of the Air Force’s premier fighter trainer. She excelled at both, earning multiple awards, and spearheading new programs to mentor and grow professional aviators.

As an entrepreneur, wife and mother of three, she shares powerful heartfelt stories of strength and grit. Tammy Barlette talks about how, for her, quitting has never been an option and the importance of not comparing her "backstage" self to someone else standing in the spotlight as she has moved forward in whatever comes her way. Confidence is a topic that is close to her heart. The importance of confidence in one's success is often under valued and this was a lesson she learned after years of aviation experience. It doesn't have to take years to develop confidence. Persistence and dedication in the face of difficulties and obstacles are required for progress. Her stories of struggle and triumph taught her how to persevere against the odds. Resist collapsing under pressure.

Dr. Kate Hendricks-Thomas

Doctor Kate Hendricks-Thomas, U.S. Marine Corps Military Police Officer: In 2018, she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer believed to be connected to burn pit exposure in Iraq. In the years since, Kate Hendricks-Thomas tirelessly advocated for herself and other veterans trying to obtain health care and benefits for exposure-related illnesses. Doctor Kate Hendricks Thomas died Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at the age of 42. Female veterans share their stories of seeking to be seen in a culture where they don't quite fit and their struggles to find community and friendship. Some fought during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as the first women in combat in American history. How and where, for example, does a female combat Marine find her tribe once she leaves the service? Through the stories of these courageous yet entirely human women, readers learn about the experiences of a new and often forgotten generation of veterans; about the challenges surrounding family and career choices that millions of American women face; and ultimately, about sacrifice, resiliency, loss, and love. This book will inform readers with an interest in female veterans and women's health and mental health issues, as well as researchers, students, and professionals working in fields encompassing women's psychology, health, and social work. An Unlikely Story of Transcending Boxes and Labels

An Unlikely Story of Transcending Boxes and Labels

"Inspire until I expire." That's what you will hear him say on his Tic-Tok videos both in and out of the gym. Of course, it will be followed by "Let CENTCOM say 'AMEN!" Born Michael Barnes, Chaplain Col. Khallid Shabazz grew up in a devout Lutheran home in Alexandria, LA "I loved everything about the church," he says. "But there were no men." As a fatherless child without brothers or uncles, he ached for male role models. The only man who played a significant role in his young life was the family friend who molested him when he was 10. "That's when my story starts," he says. Filled with shame and self-loathing, Col. Shabazz nearly failed out of high school. He says he squeaked into Jarvis Christian University in Hawkins, TX. Still, I hadn't dealt with what happened to me," he recalls, and he spent his college years picking fights and drinking himself to sleep. He says it was only a matter of time before his reckless bullying led to that bullet in his back. #khaledshabaaz | #YouveGotMettle | #martschink | #muslim | #takingcareofsoldiers | #army #armychaplain | #Courage | #mindsetmatters | #servantleader | #blackcommunity I#HBCU| #blackmenoftiktok

Veterans from War (VFW) Legislative Director - Tammy Barlet

Meet US Coast Guard veteran Tammy Barlet of the Washington DC / Baltimore area. Tammy’s originally from a small town in Pennsylvania which is part of the reason she served 8 years in the military [get out of the small town] as an Operations Specialist. She shares the other reason why she joined the military along with what she did, where she’s been, and taught me something about a certain status of the Coast Guard I thought I knew to be true. I was obviously misinformed. Currently, Tammy serves as Deputy Legislative Director at Veterans from War (VFW).

U.S. Army Ranger, LTC Lisa (Poplinski) Jaster

When you delete your adjectives, who are you? Most people limit themselves to their labels. They embrace barriers based on the box that society puts them in. But your adjectives aren’t your destiny. In "Delete the Adjective: A Soldier’s Adventures in Ranger School," Lisa Jaster proves your merit should always trump your labels. Lisa Jaster is an American Soldier, combat engineer, and one of the first three women to graduate the elite United States Army Ranger program in 2015. One of the most difficult combat training courses in the world, Lisa was the first reservist to complete the course. She graduated at age 37, while the average trainee age is 23. Lisa, an athlete focused on strength training and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, has a deeply rooted understanding of the importance of perseverance through continual progress and growth, as well as an ingrained respect for camaraderie and selfless service stemming from a noteworthy active-duty career (including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan). She volunteered for combat training when she discovered the Army Ranger course was being opened to women for the first time in 60 years as a U.S. government experiment to see how women would fare in the notoriously brutal program. I bet that was like HIPAA on steroids. "During his service in the White House Medical Unit, he conducted 84 domestic and five overseas missions in support of the President and Vice President. Consequently, he assessed hospital systems and witnessed the social determinants of health that lead to health disparities and inequalities in the United States and worldwide. It was the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil; nearly 3,000 people were killed. The attacks involved the hijacking of four planes, three of which were used to strike significant U.S. sites. American Airlines flight 11 and United Airlines flight 175 were flown into the World Trade Center’s north and south towers, respectively, and American Airlines flight 77hit the Pentagon. United Airlines flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to overpower the hijackers. The plane was believed to be headed to the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
On 9/11/2001, as an NYPD Officer, John Mulet came into work as usual - "on a beautiful Tuesday morning' as he put it. But the rest of the day, and his life, for that matter have never been then same again.

On 9/11, 24-year-old Air National Guard rookie fighter pilot Heather "Lucky" Penney was sent on a suicide mission. Without any live weapons on board her aircraft, she and her flight lead, Lieutenant General Marc Sasseville, rushed into their F-16's on September 11, 2001, knowing that it might be their last mission. Their mission? - to ram Flight 93 to protect Washington DC only to find that the passengers on Flight 93 have overcome the terrorists and crashed the airliner.

Kim DeFiori: Lessons from Thor

Kim DeFiori: Lessons from Thor

Kim DeFiori began her military career after graduating from West Point in 2008 as a Military Police (MP) Officer. She deployed shortly after to Afghanistan for a year, serving with military police and infantry companies. She was one of the first women to work alongside Afghan police day and night conducting raids with special operations units. She went on to serve as an aide-de-camp at the Pentagon.

However, Kim's story doesn't end there. She shares her personal story in this episode of her journey in dealing with the aftereffects of her deployment because, as she says, "The Army does a good job teaching you how to deploy but not how to come home." Part of the trauma occurred back home. Wearing a mask + drinking alcohol and neglecting treatment are not a good mix.

Kim DeFiori is a mental health advocate wants to reduce mental health stigma and hopes all who are suffering won't do so in silence and isolation but will have the courage to ask for help.

In honor of Memorial Day, I couldn’t think of a better guest to come on than Scott DeLuzio. On Drive On Podcast, Scott has this mission: "I talk about topics such as mental health, PTSD, relationships, leadership skills, and interview other veterans about their experiences and how they've dealt with them. Tiffany Martschink, originally from Charleston, South Carolina, joined the military after a semester of college. Originally, she was going to join the military as a Bandsman (she plays 5 instruments!), but after she passed the required audition for Tuba, she would have to wait 6 months before being able to ship out to basic training and AIT. Instead, Tiffany joined the Army as a Religious Affairs Specialist (56M) and served on both active duty and in the Army reserves for a total of 24 years of service. During that time, she also served as an Army Recruiter (79R) and an AIT Instructor amongst other roles.
In this episode, Tiffany shares a piece of her story about a specific event she experienced while serving as an Instructor/ Course Writer in the Army Reserves at the end of her career. It was at a point, while serving when she was also homeless that she experienced an MST (Military Sexual Trauma). Listen to her share her story and how it influenced what she is doing now- providing a platform for military service members, veterans, and their family members to share their personal stories by hosting this podcast- The Mettle of Honor Podcast -and advocating for those veterans dealing with mental health issues, suicide intervention, and MST survivors.
