MGS: The Movie and Game Show

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Star Wars Episode I, we're reading through the entire script together, front to back. This script includes expanded and supplementary materials incorporated from the film novelisation, comic books, and more.

This is Part One, which ends with Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and crew rescuing Amidala from Naboo and escaping towards Tatooine.

We return to our PS2 review series with EA Redwood Shore's 2006 adaptation of The Godfather.

We continue our descent into hell by thoroughly examining "Fruity Pinocchio," Pauly Shore's fever dream interpretation of the little wooden boy that captured our hearts in 2022.

We're taking a little break this week from the "regular" Pinocchio films to watch an episode of the 1994 animated Mega Man series, which neither of us had seen before. In this episode, Mega Man gets tricked into thinking that he's been turned into a real boy, just like the wooden puppet that nobody cares about.

This movie is a pure turd, honestly. Scott sent me a message saying that no god would allow this film to be made.

We begin our year the way that we always do: by making predictions about the things that will happen, and completing the Video Game Fantasy Draft.

Happy New Year everyone! This week, we're talking about our favourite games that we played during 2023, with a special focus on games made by independent developers and small studios.

After a much-needed reprieve, we return to the world of game-to-film adaptations with Neil Blomkamp's Gran Turismo. Based on the true story of gamer-turned-racer Jann Mardenborough, it's a fine enough retelling of a dream come true, and a decent little racing movie with just enough action and beauty to carry it through the more dull moments and puddle-deep character work.

This week, we're examining The Game Awards. In particular, how the 3+ hour marketing blitz does little except eclipse what should be a celebration of gaming's artistic achievements. From bland reveals filled with shareholder-pleasing buzzwords and manufactured hype to games seemingly devoid of any artistic merit or personality, it's a night to forget, and we discuss striking a balance between commercialism and honoring the artistic essence of the gaming industry.

This week, we return to the world of Castlevania with the most recent entry in the TV series, Castlevania: Nocturne. Although it isn't perfect, it does feel like a proper return to form, and the characters are compelling and fun, even if there are a few too many. It's been renewed for a second season, and we can't wait to see what's in store.

This week, we're concluding our review of the Jordan Peele/Henry Selick shared universe with the culmination their combined efforts, Wendell & Wild. Unfortunately, although it's pretty to look at and has lots to like, it falls a bit flat and is doomed to be fairly forgettable. Also, Dallin recorded his audio on the wrong microphone for this one because he's a doink. Enjoy!

In this episode, we play and discuss Bad Boys: Miami Takedown (Bad Boys 2), one of the most forgettable games we've ever played. I've already forgotten about it by the time I wrote this description.

Although the bones of greatness are still there, ultimately this final season falls very flat.

This week we move to review Season 2 of Castlevania, and what a banger it is. New characters that are interesting and dynamic, old characters growing and learning together. It's a wonderful time.

This week, we go back to rewatch and review the Castlevania animated series on Netflix in preparation for Castlevania: Nocturne, which will just have been released by the time this episode is published.

This is it! We have (for the time being) reached the FINAL episode of the Video Game Cinematic Universe In Review, and we are thrilled to out with a genuine, proper film that's actually good. While not an adaptation of the game, Tetris tells the story of Henk Rogers' battle to obtain the publishing rights to what would eventually become one of the most important video games of all time. The film has its flaws but is really enjoyable overall.
