44. Generalist Vs. Specialist

44. Generalist Vs. Specialist

Are you a generalist or a specialist?

If you believe that you are a generalist, you think of yourself as the jack of all trades. On the other hand, if you’re a specialist, your niche is too narrow and you may not be able to advance in your career. These are the usual concepts that come to our minds whenever we talk about the difference between these two. What about you, are you in the middle of the trenches thinking about whether you’re a specialist or generalist or where to take your career next?

In this episode, I will be talking about how to know if you’re a specialist or a generalist. I will be sharing some tips for companies to know what kind of employees they need to hire. This episode will remind you that if you’re in a limbo of deciding on whether to be a generalist or a specialist, all you need to have is the honesty within yourself to recognize what are your strengths, where you want to focus and all the other external factors which might affect you.

Tune in to this episode and share it with someone who is at the crossroads of deciding whether to be a specialist or a generalist.

42. Burnout Prevention and Recovery with Duncan So

42. Burnout Prevention and Recovery with Duncan So

With “hustle culture” and expectations on “being productive,” we’ve been given messages that we need to push and work ourselves to exhaustion. Rest and slowing down is often de-emphasized in today’s overly connected world. But, what if we don’t need to work ourselves to exhaustion before we finally realize that there is a better way of doing things? What if we could take preventative steps to avoid burning out? If you are feeling like you’ve been burning the candle at both ends lately, know that you are NOT alone.

In this episode, I am joined by Duncan So, co-founder of The Burnout Clinic who is an expert in workplace well-being and burnout recovery.  He also delivers clinical burnout experiences to help workplace leaders quickly recover from burnout and empower their careers. We tackle a myriad of topics ranging from what burnout really is to identifying indicators that you are experiencing burnout. We share perspectives on what organizations and individuals can do in order to prevent burnout.

Join us for an enriching conversation with tangible techniques to combat these signs of burnout.

36. Career Competition Against Your Partner

36. Career Competition Against Your Partner

Are you in career competition with your partner? Do you consciously, or maybe unconsciously, compare where you are at professionally against where your partner is? There's such a lack of literature on this topic, so I wanted to shed light on this topic, as I oftentimes see this pattern occur in my private coaching sessions. The beauty is, we have the ability and power to shift this dynamic, starting with how we see the situation.

35. The "Dream Job" Myth

35. The "Dream Job" Myth

In this episode, I want to dispel the notion and perspective we have about "dream jobs." The words and language that we use matter, and by using this term, we subconsciously ascribe comparison and finality to our careers, when there's so much more fluidity than we might think. If you're beating down on yourself about not being in a "dream job" or finding yourself in a state of comparison with others about it, tune in to hear a different perspective and to help you reframe a way to look at it.

If you're finding yourself in a period at work where you're so fed up, frustrated and at the tipping point of wanting to "rage quit," listen to this episode before taking action. This episode will give further perspective.

33. What They Don't Teach You in Business School

Before dropping a pretty six-figure penny on business school (or any educational degree for that matter), I want to share very openly and honestly what you will NOT learn from school. School will and WON'T teach you certain things. In my opinion, the biggest thing that's missing is learning how to brand and advocate for yourself, and manage your own mindset. Tune into today's episode for more.

31. 10x-ing My Salary over 10 years ($30K to $340k)

31. 10x-ing My Salary over 10 years ($30K to $340k)

In my first job ever post college, I was paid $30K. After 10 years in industry, I was able to more than 10 fold my corporate salary, to an ending compensation of $340K. From $30K, to $53K, to $90K, and onwards.... I talk through all the different odds and ends I've done to get to this point, and the lessons and mindset it took to make those shifts.

I share this openly because I know that if it's possible for me, it's also possible for you. This level of abundance is available to you, and it starts with adjusting your mindset.

Here's my salary trajectory:

  • 2006: $6.25/hour
  • 2006-2010: $10-$12/hour
  • 2010: $30k, this was my first ever "real job" post graduating college
  • 2011: total comp ~$53k, inside sales job with commission.
  • 2012: total comp $90k ($40/hour, with overtime)
  • 2013: total comp starting $158k, ending at $178k ($120K to $130K base, with a 32% bonus)
  • 2016: total comp $161k ($140k base with a 15% bonus)
  • 2016-2020: $150k to $167k base, 35% bonus
  • 2019-2020: total comp $337k ($250k base and 35% bonus - 50% raise)

29. Am I bragging? Fact vs. Opinion

Some people have lots of internal blocks and barriers when it comes to speaking about themselves. They feel icky when talking about themselves in interviews, writing about their experience on resumes, or going up to bat for themselves during performance or promotion conversation. If you feel weird speaking about yourself in any of those situations, it comes down to the thoughts behind it. So, if this is you then this episode is for you. Let's clean up some of those thoughts, shall we?

27. Slow Down to Move Fast

27. Slow Down to Move Fast

Hyper growth. Blitzscaling. Growth Hacking. These are all buzzy words that we're so accustomed to hearing about - especially in Silicon Valley, where constant and continual growth is the "standard," and if we're not moving quickly, then something is wrong. But there is so much benefit in being able to slow it down, in working to build a strong foundation and in being able to re-center and calibrate. I dive deep into all the thoughts about going fast and going slow in today's episode to help you re-think the need to constantly move at 150mph.

26. Bamboo Ceiling

Excited to go deep today and talk about the gap between East-West, and something I've been chewing and sitting on for a long time now. I finally feel ready to go on the record about this topic after a lot of healing :) A pretty dense topic where I share areas that Asian Americans need to be cognizant, how they can build up that muscle and what's needed to bridge the gap in white corporate America.

25. Finding Your Path

25. Finding Your Path

Returning to the roots of why I started this podcast (and cheers to my 25th episode!): what it means to find your path. We live in a society where we're so conditioned to gain acceptance from others, causing us to mirror or follow along what other people do because we want that sense of safety and belonging. When finding your own path, it can be painful. In this episode, I share common blockages where people fall short, and provide perspective and shifts to help you move forward.

When was the last time you thought about your personal and professional brand? 21. The Great Resignation

We've been hearing a lot about the Great Resignation - where roughly 1/2 of employees are thinking about resigning from their jobs and employee engagement is at an all time low.  In this episode, I normalize the conversation and share different perspectives from an employee, manager, and organizational level. Bottom line - you aren't alone, and please take care of yourselves.

19. What's In It For Me?

How do you get people to start caring about things in the workplace that they aren't excited about or bought into? Whether it be a bad manager, a un-collaborative team member or an organization that only cares about the money - how does one go about changing behavior? In this episode I talk about the WIFM question, and how that alone can change and shift people's way of operating. When they know what truly benefits and boomerangs back to them, they might be more incentivized to change.

18. Academia vs. Industry

Most people have been told and given thoughts about pursuing education or pursuing industry - and it's those very stories that show up in how people make decisions in their careers. In this episode, I talk about the process of de-conditioning the thoughts we have about both academia and industry, so you can bring more consciousness and create more intentional decision making.

Fear not, it also gives actionable steps on where to go from after being victimized from those experiences.

We spend a third of our lifetime working, so naturally some of our triggers and sensitive spots get shown a light at some point in our careers. Sometimes, it gets worse before it gets better, so I wanted to dissect this a bit more about what it means to HEAL, grow and improve. I go deep into the psychology of success and achievement, communication, money and other fun work related triggers - and start questioning it, so we can all collectively heal.
