Moms Letting Go Without Giving Up
By Michelle Weidenbenner
As the mother of a recovering addict, I've spent years trying to cope with this devastating disease. I used to search for others to help me, but couldn't find what I was looking for.
Now I'm focused on comforting moms, like you, by sharing what I needed -- bringing you hope and a way to recapture you.

Day 17: Open Your Eyes with Lucretia

DAY 10: Create Your Boon Road Map
The obstacles of your past can become the gateways to lead to new beginnings. --Ralph Blum
If you want to arrive at a new destination do you put the address in your navigation to get there?
I do.
Without a roadmap to where you're going you might be clueless on how to get there.
What steps do you need to take to get to where you want to go now? What baby steps do you have to take?
If you let your past motivate you to begin something new, and set your steps in writing, you are more apt to arrive at this new destination.

DAY 9: Strengthen Your Posture
Failure and setbacks are ingredients for a great success story. My setback was a blessing! I survived what was meant to destroy me. I came back like a boss--fabulous, wiser, and stronger than ever. --A Recovering Addict
When we slouch we appear weak, fragile, unconfident, and sometimes hopeless. When we stand tall, our core is stronger, we appear purposeful and confident. When our loved ones see that our posture has changed, that we are stronger, they seek to find what we have. They see that we have changed.
The cycle stops when we go after our purpose, what God has called us to do.

DAY SEVEN: Inventory Your Value
Before others can value us, we must value ourselves.
If you're taking responsibility for something your adult child has done, you could be falling in a trap. The GUILT TRAP. This trap will hack your energy and steal your time. You'l spend wasted hours worrying that your son or daughter's problem are your fault. We can't go back to change things, but we can go forward, reflect on the past, and change the future.
What are your gifts? What are you good at? Make a list. Ask family and friends.
Think about your child's substance use disorder. Do you have guilt about contributing to your child's trauma or your child's substance abuse?

DAY FIVE: Count Your Cost
Lost time is never found again. -Benjamin Franklin
1. Pretend that your loved one is well again. In recovery. You receive a letter from him or her. Write what you want the letter to say. Hope for that. See this letter happening. Maybe your letter would say something like this:
Dear Mom,
Thank you for never giving up on me. I'm sorry for what I put you through when I was in active addiction. I said things I didn't mean. I did things I'm ashamed of. I am sorry. I love you forever. Your Son/Daughter
What will your letter say? Write it.
2. Pretend that you're living in your purpose and making your life meaningful by serving others, by bringing value to others using your 'sweet spot' or gifts. What could someone say to you to help you feel like it was all worthwhile? What would your letter say? What if it sounded like this?
Dear (Your Name)
You have changed my life by bringing me hope. You changed the way I used to think about addiction. Now I see my child, the one that I had written off. Together, we're building a better relationship, even though his substance use hasn't completely stop. I know now that if he should die, I will have no regrets.
Thank you, A Mom

DAY FOUR: Seize Your Saboteur
HOW WILL YOU CHANGE?
It's important to know the stages of change, so when our loved ones make comments about their lives, or their using, we can assess where they are in their motivation to change.
If we want to build a better relationship with others, it's important to manage how WE want to change too.
Are you motivated to change for the sake of your loved one? We want them to change, but what about us?
It's time to close the gap between havoc and hope and take charge of what YOU will do to change your reaction to him/her.

DAY TWO: Pick Your Boon
What is your deepest desire, your greatest ache, your truest longing? Find that.
When we focus on ourselves, and our interests, it helps take our minds off of our loved ones. We can't control what they do, but we can control how we spend our time, what our goals are, and who we serve.
Use your gifts to serve others and you will find a positive distraction that will bring others joy.

Interview with Beth Syverson with SAFE HOME Podcast
https://www.safehomefamilies.com
Interview with Beth Syverson
Beth is a mom, wife, musician, and as of 2021 a podcaster, activist, and public speaker. Since 2019, her son Joey has struggled with addiction to substances plus serious mental health issues. For the first year of that roller coaster ride, she and Joey were both derailed. Beth tried to “fix” Joey and her Supermom cape was tied on tight.
But when nothing worked to “fix” him, she sought help for herself, which improved her own life and also her relationship to her wife Jan and to Joey. She and Joey created Safe Home Podcast in August 2021, with the purpose of helping other families avoid some of the pain we’ve experienced.
“Pain that’s not transformed gets transmitted.”
We are trying to transform our pain into practical guidance for other families with struggling teens. Beth adopted Joey from Japan when he was 7-1/2 months old.
We now realize that his relinquishment trauma is the core issue that caused him to seek substances.
Beth is a leader for other adoptive parents who are coming “out of the fog” and realizing that the adoption that created their family also created trauma for their child. Contact Beth directly by emailing Hello@SafeHomeFamilies.com
