Middle Grade Mavens
By Julie Grasso+Pamela Ueckerman
The Middle-Grade Mavens are two Australian authors reviewing middle-grade children's books. We also chat with authors and illustrators about their inspiration, processes and experience and sometimes we interview publishers and agents to find out more about the industry. Whether you're a writer, school librarian, teacher, or just a book fan, this is for you. Julie Anne Grasso is the author of the Frankie Dupont Mystery series, cupcake enthusiast and part-time library book wrangler. Pamela Ueckerman is a dance teacher, writer, book reviewer, editor and home educator.

For Ages: 9 - 11 years old
This was meant to be Alice's year to shine, but things are already going wrong...
At school, she's given young environmental activist Greta Thunberg as her pen pal for a fictional writing assignment. Why couldn't Alice get someone easy to write to, like a pop star?
Then she's put in charge of taking the Harmony Day Food Fair online, which seems impossible, especially when she is teamed up with the most annoying boy in her school.
As if she didn't have enough on her plate, Alice gets kicked out of her bedroom by her grandmother coming to stay. And no matter what Alice does, she'll never be able to live up to her infuriating big sister's achievements, right?
Through her letters to Greta, Alice finds herself opening up about her life. And as Alice approaches the hard questions by wondering, 'What would Greta do?', she starts to believe that she can make a difference - a big one.

Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Pamela reviews, "Dragon Skin," by Karen Foxlee, and Julie reviews, "Seven Wherewithal Way," by Samantha-Ellen Bound. Plus Karen and Sam both stop by in for an interview.
About: Dragon Skin: How to save a dragon:
1)Assemble equipment. Water, Weet-Bix, sugar, syringe, sticky tape, scissors.
2)Believe in everything.
Pip never wants to go home. She likes to sit at the waterhole at dusk and remember Mika, her best friend. At home her mother's not the same since her boyfriend moved in. They don't laugh anymore and Pip has to go to bed early, turn off her light and pretend she doesn't exist. When she finds a half-dead creature at the waterhole, everything changes. She knows she has to save this small dragon and return it to where it comes from. But how?
About: Seven Wherewithal Way:
Ferdinand fell out of the sky on the hottest day of the year, while Celeste and Esmerelda Barden were on the front porch eating ice-cream.
Celeste is having the worst summer ever. Her parents are off on an adventure and she's stuck at Gran's house with her annoying little sister, Esme, and strict instructions to be responsible. Or, as Esme says, boring. So when their eccentric cousin Ferd crash-lands a flying bus in the yard, what choice does Celeste have but to follow Ferd back home to Seven Wherewithal Way?
Wherewithal - Ferd's house, and the gateway to the many Realms unreachable from Earth - is bursting with magic and mystery and otherworldly creatures. It's Celeste's favourite place in any world. But when something tries to break in through the portal in the pantry - the door to the mystical Realm of Forests - Celeste learns that both Wherewithal and her beloved cousin are under threat. If Celeste wants to save her cousin, their home, its inhabitants and possibly even all the Realms, she is going to have to find her adventurous side. Fast.

Every picture in his books had been limited by the size of the page, contained within frames. Here, there was no frame. Here, the picture didn't end. Beyond those icy plains, the sea, and beyond the sea, a land that floated on the ice, drifting northwards. Matthew put the binoculars to his eyes and saw valleys and cliffs and rivers all made of snow. Everywhere was white. Matthew has dreamed and read and thought about the North Pole for as long as he can remember. And he has done it secretly. It is a place that cannot be tarnished by the world in which he lives - a world in which he struggles to find answers and make friends, while everything seems to come easily to other children. But one day, a crow called Lewis Carmichael lands at Matthew's window - a crow who believes in Matthew in the most simple and ordinary ways. Episode 93: Interview with Samone Amba: Author of The Good Times of Pelican Rise
Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Julie chats to Samone Amba, author of The Good Times of Pelican Rise, released on July 27 2021 by Affirm Press, and Illustrated by Lucy Zhang.
The idea for this series came to Samone while she was shelving books in the middle-grade section of Beaumaris Library. Her creative license wants to add that a book fell on her head, like Henny Penny’s acorn or Isaac Newton’s apple, but that is simply untrue.
Samone is now a pre-service early learning and primary school teacher and will one day be teaching middle grade as well as writing it!
About the book: The Good Times of Pelican Rise: Save the Joey's
UGH! After-school care, again?
It's official: they've finally reached grade six, and Sunday Moon and her besties Ockie, Kirra and Lottie are Legends of the School! But no matter how legendary they are, as soon as the end of day bell rings they are MAROONED in after-school care at Club Koala. Day in, day out, with only the karaoke-loving grade twos and nit-infested preppies for company.
After the worst summer of bushfires ever, Sunday is determined to ditch the headstand competitions and use her time at Club Koala to make a difference. Sunday's parents might say NO! to getting a pet, but that won't stop Sunday from saving as many joeys as she can - with the help of her friends, a radio station, a whole bunch of wool from the op shop, and a LOT of animal memes.
Welcome to The Good Times of Pelican Rise ... a fun series that explores growing up, getting involved, hanging out with besties and using your voice to Be the Change.

She is embarrassed by the second-hand shoes given to her by the kind neighbours, has trouble understanding the language at school, and with fitting in and making new friends. Her solace is a glasshouse in the garden that inexplicably holds the sun and the moon and all the secrets of her memory and imagination.
Her fragile universe is rocked when tragedy strikes and Ma Ma refuses to face the world outside. Meixing finds herself trapped within the shrinking walls of Big Scary. Her parents said this would be a better life for them all, but it feels like the worst and most heart-breaking experience of Meixing's entire existence. Surviving will take all the resilience and inner belief of this brave girl to turn their world around.

Episode 80: Interview: Elizabeth Honey: Author of From Stella Street to Amsterdam
Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Pamela interviews, Elizabeth Honey, author of "From Stella Street to Amsterdam," published by Allen and Unwin in September 2020.
About the book:
When Henni's stubborn old neighbour Willa insists on returning to her childhood home in the Netherlands for a wedding, Henni leaps at the chance to be her travelling companion. 'Lucky duck! Fantastic opportunity!' That's what everyone in Stella Street said. 'Oh boy, chance of a lifetime.'
But during the long flight to Amsterdam, Willa reveals to Henni the real reason for her journey: a terrible family secret stretching back to the Second World War. As Henni makes friends with more and more of Willa's relatives, she must decide if they should know the truth. And is that the only mystery?
A triumphant return to the wonderful, warm and witty world of Stella Street by the much-loved author Elizabeth Honey.
Author Bio:
Elizabeth Honey grew up on a farm, went to Swinburne art school, had adventures abroad and a variety of jobs before becoming an illustrator, then also a writer, for children.
She lives in Richmond, Melbourne in a house of books: picture books, poetry, art (Matisse particularly) and weird books. Fortunately, her retired graphic designer husband is also a bibliophile. They have two grown-up children and a granddaughter in Amsterdam. All her life Elizabeth has zoomed around on her bike - not a lycra rider, just a charging-round-the-place rider - and that vibrant bike city in the Netherlands has become an inspiration. She's also passionate about streets for people not cars, public parkland and place-making, and an abiding passion is habitat for wildlife, for the survival of our unique animals.

Episode 78: Wend Orr interview / Kelly Ngai and Mikki Lish interview
Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Pamela chats to Wendy Orr, about her latest book "Cuckoo's Flight," and Julie chats to Mikki Lish and Kelly Ngai about their debut book, "The House On Hoarder Hill."
About Wendy's Book:
When Clio's town in Bronze Age Crete is threatened by seafaring raiders, she faces the greatest sacrifice of all. Can Clio, her herd of horses and a new young friend find a way to change their destinies?
Another wonderfully engaging historical middle fiction adventure from the author of Dragonfly Song and Nim's Island.
If she had stayed to load the kiln as she should have, she'd never have seen the ship. Mama said the ship still would have been there, so everything had to happen the way it did. But that's not true. Clio saw it, and the world changed.
When a raiders' ship appears off the coast, the goddess demands an unthinkable price to save the town - and Clio's grandmother creates a sacred statue to save Clio's life.
But Clio is torn between the demands of guarding the statue and caring for her beloved horses. Disabled in an accident, she must try to put aside her own grief at no longer being able to ride - and in the process, save a friend's life and stop a war.
Rippling with emotion and drama, war and resistance, fear and determination, this novel is a brilliant companion to the highly acclaimed Dragonfly Song and Swallow's Dance.
Website: Home · Wendy Orr
About Mikki and Kelly's Book:
Magical, spooky and mysterious: welcome to the House on Hoarder Hill ...
When Hedy and Spencer start receiving messages on dusty picture frames, Christmas at their grandfather's spooky house turns into a mission to solve the mystery of their grandmother's disappearance. What is their magician grandfather not telling them? With the help of a (talking) mounted stag head, an (also talking) bear rug, and other (currently) disembodied spirits, and against the resistance of gargoyles and ravens, Hedy and Spencer set out to find the truth.

From the decadent food to the star-studded passenger list, travelling First Class on Aquitania is every bit as glamorous as Pepper had imagined. And most dazzling of all is American stage sensation Perdita West, wearing the world-famous Saffron Diamond around her neck. When the priceless jewel disappears mid-voyage, Pepper unexpectedly finds herself entangled in the crime.

About Amie and Ryan's book: The World Between Blinks
Discover a magical world where lost things are found ...
Whenever cousins Jake and Marisol get together, adventure follows. They have their late Nana to thank for that. Her epic trips and treasure hunts were the stuff of family legend.
This summer, with the whole family reuniting for one last vacation at Nana's home, the cousins are in for a legendary trip of their own.
Following a map Nana left behind, Jake and Marisol sneak out to a nearby lighthouse - then accidentally slip into another world ... The World Between Blinks is a magical place, where all kinds of lost things (and people!) end up. Everywhere they turn, the cousins find real mysteries from history - plus a few they thought were only myths.
But the man who holds the key to Jake and Marisol's journey home doesn't want to be found ... and if the cousins don't catch him fast, they could end up lost in this world forever.

Episode 73: Rebecca Lim interview: Author of Tiger Daughter / Katrina Nannestad Interview: Author of We Are Wolves
Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Julie chats with Rebecca Lim, about her new release, "Tiger Daughter," on February 2, by Allen and Unwin.
And Pamela Chat's to Katrina Nannestad, about her recently released, "We Are Wolves,' on October 2020.
About Rebecca's book:
Tiger Daughter
Wen Zhou is determined to create a future for herself that is more satisfying than the life her parents expect her to lead. Equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful, Tiger Daughter is a wonderfully compelling and authentic Own Voices novel about growing up Asian in Australia.
What I feel most days is that nothing is ever going to change. That my life won't even start, and that I'll be stuck like this forever.
Wen Zhou is the daughter and only child of Chinese immigrants whose move to the lucky country has proven to be not so lucky. Wen and her friend, Henry Xiao - whose mum and dad are also struggling immigrants - both dream of escape from their unhappy circumstances, and form a plan to sit an entrance exam to a selective high school far from home. But when tragedy strikes, it will take all of Wen's resilience and resourcefulness to get herself and Henry through the storm that follows.

But sometimes, to survive, you have to do bad things. Dangerous things. Wild things.
Sometimes to survive, you must become a wolf.

Episode 71: Bonus: Crossover with Words And Nerds Podcast:
Today on Middle Grade Mavens we are doing something different. We are crossing over to have a chat with the wonderful Dani Vee.
Dani is host of the popular literary podcast Words and Nerds, where she chats to authors of all genres about the social and political impact of the writing and the writing process. An English educator for 17 years, she has been a bookworm since birth and loves the classics, crime fiction, contemporary fiction, kid lit and everything in between. Don’t even get her started on her love for Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray!
Dani is happiest reading a book underneath a blanket with a cup of tea and a lot of dark chocolate. With a love for the creative, she has also been a back up singer/ dancer for the award winning Australian Tina Turner Show, as well as the lead singer for a few original bands. The only place you’ll find her singing now is in the shower or the rare occasion she’s in the kitchen burning something.
Dani is a passionate advocate for an empathic and just society, and believes that books have the power to change the world.
We chat about all things books, authoring, interviewing, podcasting and so much more....

Episode 57: Interview with author Hayley Chewins
Today on Middle Grade Mavens we are doing something a little different. We have a wonderful interview with a truly inspiring writer.
Pamela chats to Hayley Chewins, a middle grade author with two great books soon to be in the world. http://www.hayleychewins.com/
Hayley grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, in a house so full of books that she learnt to read by accident. She’s fond of telling people that she writes books about magical girls with secrets—even if that’s not an actual genre. Her books are literary fantasy, or surreal fairy tales, or weird magic. (Or: all of the above.)
Her debut, The Turnaway Girls, was a Kirkus Best Book of 2018 and made the American Library Association’s Amelia Bloomer List of Best Feminist Books for Young Readers. Her second book, The Sisters of Straygarden Place, is forthcoming from Candlewick Press on September 15th, 2020.
Hayley lives in Johannesburg, South Africa, with her soulmate/husband/fellow coffee addict, Liale, and their toy poodle, Darfer.
Her book the Turnaway Girls is available in all good book shops world wide: http://www.hayleychewins.com/the-turnaway-girls
The Sisters Of StrayGarden Place is coming soon: http://www.hayleychewins.com/the-sisters-of-straygarden-place

If you’ve been listening to our show in 2020, you’ll know we did an #MiddleGradeMavensAskTheEditor series, to prepare you for conferences like Kidlitvic and CYA. The good news is these conferences aren’t cancelled due to the outbreak of Corona Virus.
Kidlitvic is merely postponed to November, and CYA is forging ahead in July going totally online.
In the space of about a month, the world has dramatically changed. Terms like essential services are spoken about on a daily basis and the world has been asked to stay at home.
We contemplated this long and hard when it comes to books, after all, we are all about books. The thing is, we consider books to be an essential services. Thankfully, we are pleased to discover many folks agree. We’ve opened our social media platform doors to authors and illustrators that have cancelled their book launches, offering to promote them the best way we know how, by showing you wonderful book covers and displaying fantastic book blurbs. Creators keep sending us those requests to mavens@middlegradepodcast.com
We aren’t the only ones innovating obviously. Book shops are no longer open to the public but delivering door to door, and libraries are following suit by changing their services models to suit this terrifying and turbulent time.
When talking about books however, we can’t forget about the book makers.
We asked a bookseller and two publishers a few questions about how things are changing during Covid19 and guess what, they agreed. So sit back and have a listen to our bonus episode on how the kids book industry is changing world we live in.
