Phil is also the founder of the Center for Policing Equity, focusing on leveraging data and scientific analyses to combat inequitable policing.

We go back and forth on the state of the movement to reform the criminal justice system, and Phil details where he is optimistic and pessimistic. From there the conversation zooms in on policing and how we can reimagine these systems using data.
We close the conversation detailing Phil’s next chapter in this work, and how storytelling and narrative are core to fundamentally changing these flawed systems.

EP 35 - Haena Park | A Public Failure, A Prison Stint & Chance For Healing
This week's episode of Next With Novo features the incredible life story of Haena Park. Now a Learning and Impact Officer at Galaxy Gives. Haena began her career as a highly ambitious trader on Wall Street, before receiving a federal indictment, a prison sentence, and ultimately being given a second chance and dedicating her life to giving back.
We discuss her upbringing as a Korean immigrant and how that culture informed so much of her story. Haena speaks to her early success attending Harvard before working at Morgan Stanley Goldman Sachs, and later in global macro portfolio management at Fortress Investment Group.
Haena details what led to her federal indictment, time in prison, and her experience within the system. A truly singular story you have to hear to believe.
And finally, Haena opens up about her personal story of childhood trauma and how that experience, and many others, led to her second chance and a life dedicated to healing and paying it forward.

EP 28 - Desmond Meade | Voting Rights and Criminal Justice Reform
This week’s episode of Next with Novo features Desmond Meade, a voting rights activist and Executive Director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition.
Desmond begins by walking us through his story, which started with a cycle of addiction, homelessness, and jail time. After hitting rock bottom, Desmond was able to turn things around and eventually graduated from law school with a concentration in criminal justice.
Desmond then introduces us to the Florida Restoration Act, where he directed the mission to restore voting rights to those with felony convictions in Florida. We discuss the push and pull between getting people to take action, fighting the notion that people need to lose something for others to gain. Finally, Demond highlights his ultimate goal to strengthen society, starting with those who have been affected by the criminal justice system. This conversation offers an inspiring glimpse into how social change looks on the ground, and the work being done to advocate for those who have been perpetually sidelined.
Desmond was named Time 100 most influential people in the world in 2019, and in 2021 he was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant.

EP 27 - Mark Cuban | Crypto and the Creator Economy
This week’s episode of Next with Novo features Mark Cuban, an American entrepreneur, TV personality, philanthropist, and investor.
Mark’s curiosity and knack for business lead him towards plenty of exciting ventures, from starring on Shark Tank to owning the Dallas Mavericks. Taking us back to the beginning, Mark shares how he stumbled into the idea of local area networking back in the 80s, all the way up to selling broadcast.com to Yahoo! Inc. in 1999. According to Mark, today’s crypto community closely resembles the “gold rush” felt in 1999. Now, he predicts it’s all going to boil down to applications, implications, and integrations. A day of reckoning will come, and we both agree that utility will win in the long run.
As a philanthropist, Mark also reflected on the play-to-earn model that crypto follows, and the potential to create a similar ecosystem within philanthropy. Coming from someone who's always been in the middle of the creator economy, this episode is a great look at the past, present, and future of innovation.

This week I’m welcoming Anatoly Yakovenko on to Next with Novo. Toly is the founder and CEO of Solana, an open-source, decentralized blockchain.
Initially released in 2019, Solana has grown to become the world’s first web-scale blockchain. Taking me back to the beginning, Toly explains his core innovation: Proof of History, which moves everything forward in both speed and capacity. Nowadays, there’s a large tradeoff between speed and security. Toly explains where Solana fits into this problem, and the promising opportunities to make hardware even faster. With rivalries growing, Toly hopes that blockchains remain diverse, maintaining a healthy level of competition and accelerating progress.

This week on Next with Novo I welcome in Emily Cheng, also known as Pplpleasr. Emily is a multidisciplinary artist whose original animations have blossomed into some of the most viral NFTs to date. Emily recently wrote an op-ed titled “How crypto changed my life,” and recaps her growth throughout the pandemic, from unemployment to creating her first animated short. Making progress with NFTs, Emily was able to grow her own audience, shifting power away from a few wealthy investors and into a collective unit. Her success led to the creation of PleasrDAO, a collective of DeFi leaders, NFT collectors, and digital artists who’ve acquired significant cultural pieces. The NFT community has completely altered Emily’s path, and this episode is an inspiring glimpse into the creative, collective change that can exist within the crypto community.

EP 24 - Taking NFT’s to Space with Tom Sachs
On this episode of Next with Novo, I sit down with Tom Sachs, native New Yorker, artist, & NFT newbie. For those not familiar, Tom is on a mission to revolutionize the art industry by creating his version of “outer space” and challenging our perception of reality. His “Space Program” exhibition first reimagined the moon landing at the Gagosian Gallery in LA, then took on colonization of Mars at the Park Avenue Armory in NYC. Tom also has an ongoing partnership with Nike, where he designed high-performing, space-themed equipment. In this episode, Tom tells us all about his next project – his first entry into the NFT space – called Rocket Factory, which will consist of 3,000 unique, digital rocket components that can be combined to form 1,000 completed rockets. If desired, those with completed rockets can choose to have a physical rocket created and actually launched towards the atmosphere. As an out-of-the-box thinker, Tom explains how he’s taking his creative expertise into NFTs, as well as growing & developing the NFT space in the process. Sarah joined me at the Galaxy Digital HQ for a chat on her journey from an NYC art scene upstart to an academic to a key figure in the evolution of experiential crypto art and the growing NFT scene, which birthed two projects: Cloud of Petals and her own altcoin, Bitchcoin.
In this episode, you'll learn how Sarah merged her passion for experiential visual art and the growing crypto space to build a name for herself. She'll explain how her Bitchcoin project takes users and buyers into the visual side of the mining process (a rarity) and how she believes creating NFTs on the blockchain can help build more trust and accountability in the art world, which often relies on the illusion of scarcity. EP 17 - MMA Fighter Eddie Alvarez’s Journey from the Streets to the Ring (and Bitcoin)
Former UFC champion and former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez is my latest guest on Next with Novo. Growing up in tough inner-city Philadelphia, Eddie started fighting, both in and out of the ring, at a young age. He started wrestling in local PAL leagues and high school competitions, making his way to the national championships against prestigious prep schools, and against the odds of his difficult upbringing. Left with the responsibilities of looking out for his siblings and eventually starting a family of his own at only 20 years old, Eddie found work in concrete before starting to box at local fights for much-needed money. He eventually progressed to MMA fighting in the Bellator league before finding success in UFC, where he'd become a world champion at 30. Eddie jumped on Zoom with me to talk about his inspiring journey from street fighter to UFC champion, as well as his early participation in Beat the Streets, the community-based wrestling nonprofit I'm proud to have launched in NYC. You'll also hear about the current state of Eddie's fighting career and how he started taking a deep interest in the stock market, real estate, and, eventually, bitcoin.

We’ve got a special edition of Next with Novo with one of the greats of our time (and the NFL), Baltimore Ravens defensive linebacker & University of Miami Hurricanes icon, plus Florida state champ wrestler, Ray Lewis. Ray is simply one of the most motivating and inspirational speakers and humans I have ever met, as well as a guy with a big heart. During our chat, Ray takes us through his tough upbringing in Florida, the absence of his father, and how he discovered his natural talent for wrestling before ending up in football. Ray caught a lucky break early in his football career and got the last available scholarship at University of Miami, where he'd become one of the most iconic players in the school’s history. After his legendary career with the Baltimore Ravens, where he won two Super Bowls, Ray retired from the NFL, but as he put it in the podcast, "not from life." Since leaving the game, Ray has found success in business, motivational speaking, and done some amazing philanthropy with the Ray Lewis 52 foundation. He also recently started a philanthropic, solar-focused organization, Power 52, where he's creating opportunities for at-risk youth. We talked about Ray's work in criminal justice, how to inspire leadership and navigate life’s detours & challenges, finding purpose after the pain and loss of COVID, and what he's learned during his incredible journey through life and sports.

Abby’s organization rethinks the concept of a gap year with a program that takes seniors and prepares them for what’s to come through a unique recruitment process and a variety of programs that help shape their trajectories by focusing on leadership and values. My conversation with Abby outlines the difficult transformation of the college admission process due to COVID, the inequalities and pressures that have built up over time, and what Global Citizen Year is doing to build a new path for students. Abby also shares a ton of insight and advice for students on how to capitalize on this time in the best way possible. EP 14 - Former Tennessee Titan Player Derrick Morgan on Medical Cannabis in the NFL & Impact Investing
At only 32 years old, former Tennessee Titans linebacker Derrick Morgan has already accomplished a lot. Derrick played for nine years in the NFL after playing college ball at Georgia Tech. During his rookie year, an injury pushed Derrick to start thinking long-term about life after football, having more control and understanding over his finances. He started doing some soul searching. After retiring from the NFL in 2019, Derrick turned his focus to real-estate and ethical investing. He launched the KNGDM Impact Fund, a 200-million dollar opportunity zone fund that focuses on bringing wealth and economic mobility to marginalized, lower-income communities in hopes of closing our nation's wealth gap. He's also become a vocal advocate for medical cannabis and the benefits it can offer former pro athletes who are struggling with pain management after years of injuries. Derrick joined me on Next with Novo to talk about his charity work, his experiences with racism and inequality in America, and his new podcast coming soon to Clubhouse.

EP 9 - Bianca Tylek on Her Fight Against the Prison Telecom Industry
Hey everyone, Mike Novogratz here. My latest guest on Next with Novo is an absolute rock star of the criminal justice reform space, Executive Director of non-profit advocacy group Worth Rises, Bianca Tylek. Born to a family of immigrants, Bianca turned around a rough upbringing that exposed her to the troubles of the juvenile system. At a young age, Bianca suffered an extreme traumatic event, further exposing her to the effect of crime and injustice on young people and their families. Bianca eventually turned things around and found her footing in higher education, graduating from Columbia University, setting her up for a successful career on Wall Street before getting an additional degree from Harvard Law. She eventually transitioned into the non-profit space, using her finance and legal expertise to challenge institutions that profit off of the prison industry, and structures like solitary confinement and pre-trial bail. Bianca is a fighter through and through and joined me for a powerful conversation about her current reform work, where she finds drive and inspiration, and some of the most significant issues currently being focused on at Worth Rises.

EP 8 - Wallo267’s Journey From 20 Years in Prison to Media Mogul
Wallace Peeples, a.k.a Wallo267, was introduced to the criminal justice system at a young age. After a childhood in and out of the Philadelphia corrections system, he ended up back in the system for 20 years after a conviction for armed robbery. During his time in prison, Wallo was forced to normalize extraordinary violence, convincing himself that it was a routine way of life in order to stay sane and survive. While incarcerated, Wallo would watch TV commercials all day, constantly flipping through channels to keep him mind occupied with anything more than what he was living through. He also grew an interest in reading and learning via books and brief access to the internet. Towards the end of his sentence, Wallo managed to start building an online community of followers from behind bars due to his interest in social media and crafty ability to start posting impactful content online whenever he could gain access to a smartphone.
Wallo was released in 2017, and within only a year, rose to become an inspiring media mogul who’s hosted a TED Talk, built an online community of millions of followers who watch his informative, viral motivational videos, as well as a strong voice of reform and hope in the prison system. I had the pleasure of having Wallo on Next with Novo to talk about his incredible journey from prison to success, what we can learn from it when examining the failed state of probation and the greater U.S criminal justice system, the books and people he loves most, entrepreneurship, and more.

EP 6 - Crypto Has Gone Mainstream: J.P. Morgan, Coinbase Files IPO & Explosive NFTs
There are so many amazing things happening right now in crypto that I decided I would record a quick solo episode of Next with Novo to share my thoughts and excitement. J.P. Morgan commented that all investors should have at 1% of their holdings in crypto, which is an incredible turn of events from their CEO Jamie Dimon, a prominent critic of the space only a few years ago. Coinbase, the biggest U.S. cryptocurrency exchange, filed an IPO to go public. Another huge moment for crypto's mainstream infiltration of the financial industry. I’m also so proud that Galaxy Digital pre-released earnings today with over $300 million in the fourth quarter 2020. I also bring up the explosive energy happening in NFTs, where digital artists like Beeple are making history with multi-million dollar sales, and why people need to be careful with their money. EP 5 - Inside the Failures & Future of the U.S. Prison System
Next up on Next with Novo, I've got a special conversation about the U.S. prison system's many failures and the urgent need for criminal justice reform with a member of the Galaxy Gives family, Alex Duran. Alex grew up in The Bronx, and at only 20 years old, was involved in a shooting where someone lost their life. He took a plea deal to serve 14 years in prison. During this time, Alex received a prestigious liberal arts degree from Bard College while experiencing many of the criminal justice system's horrors and injustices. This eventually started his interest and passion in education and reform in the criminal justice space. After his eventual release in 2016, Alex joined our team at Galaxy Gives as a program officer managing our criminal justice portfolio. I’m so glad to have been able to get Joe on the show to help kick off these conversations about what’s new and what’s next, the best & brightest minds behind the technologies powering permissionless innovation, with a focus on how cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Ethereum, DeFi) is taking us into the future and rewriting our financial systems.
Following his upbringing in Toronto and education at Princeton, Joe started noticing systemic issues in our political and economic structures and how equity is shared. He knew we needed a different future, and decided he wanted to help built it. After reading a white paper from anonymous Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, Joe went on to found the ConsenSys project, leading to the creation of Ethereum, the first cryptocurrency on the blockchain.
