Ep. 57: Keep Toxic Positivity at Bay With These Three Exercises

Ep. 57: Keep Toxic Positivity at Bay With These Three Exercises

Welcome to episode 57 of Mind Bloom, your podcast that's like yoga but for the mind.

I'm your host, Marina Gee, and this week we're talking about Toxic Positivity and how you can stave it off from your life.

For as long as I can remember, some people in my life have urged me to "think positive," and “be more positive.” But what does that even mean? If we don’t do some inner work and don’t find out  where our negativity comes from or how to overcome its root issues, then positivity will just be another word with no significance attached to it; nothing more than temporary relief which keeps us trapped within this vicious cycle of self-pitying and unproductive thoughts. I have a different interpretation of positivity. By positivity, I mean authentic and empathetic openness. Not to be confused with "toxic positivity."

Toxic positivity is, I think, an overuse of “positivity” and an oversimplification that lacks the true depth of what's going on within us. Toxic positivity is a misguided and shallow interpretation of our emotions, it ignores our complex make-ups, and it limits us from exploring the potential for growth within ourselves.

This notion that we should “stay positive” no matter what comes up over and over again, especially on social media. We're being told, from an early age and, especially, as women, to ignore our negativity because it doesn't serve us, or that we need to be positive if we want to achieve our goals in life.

There's no doubt that the self-help industry has latched onto this idea as a major life-saver. And social media took the ground running. It’s so common now to witness someone share a difficult time on social media and see the post inundated with “positive” comments, such as “you got this” or “you’ve done it before, you can do it again.”

If someone you know shares a challenging moment, think before commenting and continue listening.

Ep. 56: The Five Things You Can Do To Change Your Lifestyle and Live with Intention

Ep. 56: The Five Things You Can Do To Change Your Lifestyle and Live with Intention

Welcome to episode 56 of Mind Bloom, your podcast on all things mental health through breast cancer.

I'm your host, Marina Gee, and this week we're talking about the Five Pillars (I like to call them the five seeds) to a flourishing life.

The first self-improvement book I ever read (very sceptically, I should say) was Melody Beattie’s Codependent No More. I cannot describe to you the amazement, the perplexity, the a-ha moments I experienced while reading Beattie’s book for the first time. To this day, I come back to it periodically, for a refresher. Maintenance is important, as we tend to forget how to best love ourselves.

In this self-discovery journey of mine, I learned that our emotional wellness relies on five pillars. These may vary slightly from person to person but, generally, we all agree that a flourishing life needs a balanced degree of: Food, Sleep, Movement, Emotional and Interpersonal realms. Listen on to find out more about these.

Ep. 55: Why We All Work For Facebook, Even If You Hate It

Ep. 55: Why We All Work For Facebook, Even If You Hate It

Welcome to episode 55 of Mind Bloom, your podcast on all things mental health through breast cancer.

I'm your host, Marina Gee, and this week we're talking about Facebook ads (or any other social media ads, for that matter) and how they got us working for their companies instead of the otehr way around. As breast cancer previvors and survivors, we have a story to tell and we need social media to share it with others. But the grind and the barriers keeping us practically invisible among the amount of competitors make us resort to practices that actually work against us, instead of the other way around.

I'm ecstatic to share with you the blog article Aviva Jewel has written for the Mind Bloom Journal. "What to Pack for a Mastectomy?" is one of her best, most insightful texts (and she's authored a ton of beautiful ones, believe me).

I've just released, literally hours ago, my first book (actually a working book and a journal) called The Thriving Trail. It's a whole lot of (new) habit tracking activities, journaling prompts, and a ton of bonus materials, covering fifty beautifully designed pages. It's also entirely free. Ep. 54: Blooming Together Means Interdependence, Not Codependence

Welcome to episode 54 of Mind Bloom, your podcast on all things mental health through breast cancer.

I'm your host, Marina Gee, and I'm glad to be back from a 2-week break in which I moved from a 2-month stay in South Carolina to an indefinite stay in Connecticut. Don't ask. But if you really want to know, check out episodes 46 and 47. Quick hint, it has to do with my immigration status in the US.

I'm proud to share with you that my friend Aviva Jewel (https://www.instagram.com/avivajewel/) is writing a series of articles for Mind Bloom's blog. Our friendship is a great example of synergy and interdependence so please go check her work with breast cancer awareness and motivational writing on her Instagram account

This week only, I'm offering 70% off the Seeding Session, my 1-1 private coaching program that plants the seeds for a life flourishing beyond a diagnosis. 70% off is a whole lot of blooming, and I'd love for you to be the first to access this opportunity. Ep. 49: Breast Cancer, Panic Disorder, and the Path Towards Recovery

Welcome to episode 49 of Mind Bloom, your podcast on all things mental health through breast cancer.

I'm your host, Marina Gee, and this week, I'm giving you more updates on my emotional and financial (yikes) status: it's all so rocky due to all the upheaveal of late March.

If you were not aware, a lot has happened in the past four weeks:

- My green card self-petition was approved;

- I moved out of NYC (temporarily) and am now exploring the south of the country -- Florida, the Carolinas next, then perhaps Atlanta, GA;

- As a result of seeing my green card approved, I now need to wait between 3-6 months to get a work authorization, without which I can't legally work in the country.  Tumultous and exciting times, for sure. A lot of you came out to my rescue in so many different ways: emotional support, financial help, a motivational pep talk.  As always, I am in awe of the power of friendship and community, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.  If you would like to help me stay afloat the next couple of months (I have been unable to work since May 2020, due to my immigration status), please consider contributing to my Green Card Relief Fund on GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/greencardfund

I started the project of my life, my purpose and my mission in this world, in June of 2020 and I'm so proud to recognize that it's been growing and blooming since that very first day.

Now, beyond a podcast and its adjacent social media platforms, Mind Bloom is also a school, an orchard, a safe space where women impacted with breast cancer can collaborate for suport, self-reliance strategies and emotional growth.

The Blooming Academy is on Clubhouse, as well as on Facebook, and at mindbloomyou.com.

As always, the podcast episodes are taped live on Instagram every Monday, 1:30PM EST, and recorded on my audio editing platform, so that you can enjoy it every Tuesday, right from your favorite podcast app.

My guest this week is Dr. Alexea Gaffney, a powerhouse in the realm of breast cancer advocacy and awareness.

Ep. 42: False Support Systems and Empathy Fails, with Erin Cronican

Ep. 42: False Support Systems and Empathy Fails, with Erin Cronican

Welcome to episode 42 of Mind Bloom!

This week, I've taped the episode LIVE on Instagram again.

As you can probably tell by now, I'm quite fascinated by the potencial of LIVES and IGTV. Not only, are they a great source of engagement (and fun, truth be told), but they are also a great way to double or triple your content and half your time on the platform or, say, editing a podcast episode.

It's all about the self-care, right? So try going Live: you'll get a story, perhaps an Instagram Reel, a video for other platforms, and an IGTV post from only one piece of content.

Easy peasy. Want to make that your goal for the week? One Instagram Live? Let's go, you've got this!

This week, I'm talking about false support systems and empathy fails. I'm also going to challenge you to guess what my latest great news is. Can you guess? You definitely want to stay tuned for more.

My guest this week is Erin Cronican. Erin is an actor, producer, and the co-artistic director of The Seeing Place. She is an activist and a staunch advocate for mental health who believes in creativity, freedom and a tasty bourbon. Erin lives with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer and is here to tell us more about her first and second diagnoses and the importance of self-advocating.

Ep. 31: Infertility, Breast Cancer, and Coaching, with Caryn Rich

Ep. 31: Infertility, Breast Cancer, and Coaching, with Caryn Rich

Welcome to episode 31 of Mind Bloom!

Your host, Marina Gee, will be welcoming the new step towards the end of the coronavirus pandemic, with the introduction of the first round of vaccines. The technology used to develop these vaccines is pretty spectacular, from the biogenetics point of view. The Covid-19 vaccine uses CRISPR technology to introduce the virus' DNA into our own DNA, hence making our bodies believe that we hold the antibodies for the infection. I don't know about you, but I find this to be pretty innovative and bold.

Our guest this week is Caryn Rich. Caryn is a fertility coach and a breast cancer survivor, and she has experienced infertility  in the first person. Did you know that October is not only breast cancer awareness month but also infant and pregnancy lost awareness month? To what extent are hormonal fertility treatments the underlying cause for a breast cancer diagnosis? Listen through for an engaging conversation on all of this, as well as mental wellness during and after infertility treatments and what Caryn can do for you as you try to become a parent.

Ep. 27: Spies Have Eating Disorders Too, with Agent Scott Hardy

Ep. 27: Spies Have Eating Disorders Too, with Agent Scott Hardy

Hello and welcome to episode 27 of Mind Bloom!

This week, your host, Marina Gee, reflects on the stigma surrounding mental illness, particularly men's mental illness, and suggests the debunking of the limiting beliefs that make us buy into the notion that we're not good at this or that.  These limiting beliefs are not thruthful, they cripple our full potential and serve as excuses for not exploring at length our biggest goals and dreams.

This week, Marina speaks with Agent Scott Hardy, co-host of the podcast Spy Hards, which is all about, you guessed it, spy movies. Scott is an amazing guest: he knows a thing or two about classic spy cinema, and he has a personal knowledge of eating disorders, like anorexia and bulimia, and body dysmorphia. For more than twenty years, Scott has experienced and dealt with the devastating effects of bulimia and an inaccurate self-representation of his physical makeup. Listen through to discover the causes and the consequences associated with Scott's eating and anxiety-related disorders.

Ep. 26: Let's Have a Waffle, with Taylor James

Hello and welcome to episode 26 of Mind Bloom!

This week, your host, Marina Gee, is celebrating the projected victory of President-elect Joe Biden and his Vice President-elect, Kamala Harris. After a challenging week, especialy from the viewpoint of mental health, the analysts' projections have finally put an end to a period of intense wait, uncertainty and anxiety. Marina walks you through her own take on dealing with such difficult moments as these, and shares some tips to cope and overcome nervousness and disquiet. Mindfulness and loving kindness being just a few of them.

This week's guest is Taylor James, the host of the podcast The Waffle Shop. Taylor is a staunch advocate for mental health and knows a thing or two about anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation. He also knows a lot about how to recover from it and how to approach it, especially if, as a man, you were taught and told to "play the part" of the strong one, the provider, the protector, and the pillar of the household.

Ep. 24: Not Putting on a Shirt After Breast Cancer, with Devorah Vester

Ep. 24: Not Putting on a Shirt After Breast Cancer, with Devorah Vester

Welcome to episode 24 of Mind Bloom. This a bonus episode, to celebrate October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Marina Gee speaks with Devorah Vester, a lawyer, an activist, a mental health advocate, a sourdough baker, and a board member of Not Putting on a Shirt, the non-profit organization founded by Kim Bowles in the wake of experiencing "flat denial". Not Putting on a Shirt is dedicated to advocating and actively providing breast cancer patients and providers with the knowledge to make informed decisions conducive to an optimal surgical and aesthetic outcome post-mastectomy. The phrase Aesthetic Flat Closure, which entered the lexicon of the National Cancer Institute thanks to the activism of Not Putting on a Shirt, defines the choice not to reconstruct the breast mounds post-mastectomy. Aesthetic Flat Closure gives name to, in other words, the option to have a smooth, flat chest wall, aligned with the woman's needs and her informed consent.

Listen through to learn more about the work of the amazing organization Devorah is so proud to be a voice for, and definitely stick around if you are interested in sourdough, love to sourdough bake or, like Marina Gee, chooses to embrace the baking fails and achievements alike, while finding  respite in kneading and working the soft, indulgent dough.

Ep. 22: Invasive Lobular Carcinoma and Self-Discovery, with Tammey Grable-Woodford

Welcome to episode 22 of Mind Bloom! We're releasing two episodes a week in honor of #breastcancerawarenessmonth

The guest today is Tammey Grable-Woodford, host of the podcast @yourkillerlife (which you need to include in your podcast rotation).

Tammey believes that breast cancer is a "secret not so secret club." She was diagnosed a bit over five years ago with stage 3b estrogen and progesterone positive invasive lobular carcinoma. Even if unconsciously, a breast cancer diagnosis throws you into a transformative path of self-discovery and self-compassion. You become a different version of yourself, and you discover things about yourself you never dared imagine.

I'm honored to call Tammey my friend and my sister. She helped me make sense of LCIS and debunked the imposter syndrome I fell into after my diagnosis.

Ep. 18: Evolving After Breast Cancer, with Dr. Jen Montes @evolvepink

Ep. 18: Evolving After Breast Cancer, with Dr. Jen Montes @evolvepink

Welcome to episode 18 (Bonus Episode) of Mind Bloom, in celebration of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This Thursday, Marina Gee speaks with Dr. Jen Montes, MD, MPH, with Hunterdon Healthcare in New Jersey. Dr. Montes is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in diseases of the breast and she is going to be telling us everything she knows about LCIS, breast cancer before forty, and the myths surrounding causes and risk factors for breast cancer.

Ep. 17: LCIS and Breast Cancer: You're a Previvor Now, with Donna Bragg

Ep. 17: LCIS and Breast Cancer: You're a Previvor Now, with Donna Bragg

Welcome to episode 17 of Mind Bloom. And welcome to October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In this episode, your host, Marina Gee will walk you through the month's outline: there will be two episodes a week this month, one every Tuesday and a bonus episode every Thursday of October. The reason for this is to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and bring this disease to the forefront in terms of scientific research and the public sphere. Did you know that early detection is key? Are you aware of breast cancer symptoms? Would you like to bust some of the myths surrounding its causes? So stay with Mind Bloom to learn more, as we meet with breast surgeons, metastatic breast cancer patients, women in their late-20s in remission, reconstruction options, and breast cancer it its multiple shapes and forms (ductal, lobular, triple negative E-receptor, secondary, etc.).

In this episode, Marina Gee speaks with Donna Bragg, an Arkansas-based marketing executive, with more than twenty years under her belt as a newscast anchor and a medical reporter. Donna Bragg was diagnosed with LCIS (Lobular Carcinoma in Situ) two years ago and has since chosen the route of preventative double mastectomy, to decrease the changes of developing breast cancer down to 2-5% in her lifetime.

Donna has recently founded Sharing with My Breasties, an online platform where she gives voice to her own personal experience as a previvor and as someone who went through one of the toughest decisions in the life of any womxn: to undergo a double mastectomy.

Ep. 16: Sourdough, NY Yankees and Gen Z Walk into a Bar, with Sammi Reyes

Welcome to episode 16 of Mind Bloom. This week, your host, Marina Gee, takes you to her most recent happy place: the world of sourdough baking. Flour, water and a pinch of salt can be meditation catalysts: the musing this time revolves around the meaning of "home," and that luxury item called "stability."

This week's guest is Sammi Reyes. Sammi is a second year college student, motivational speaker, and the host of the Fashion Your Passion Podcast.  Through her own life experiences, Sammi has learned so much about how a person can reach the next level of their life and how they can find time to pursue the things they love.  Today, Sammi speaks to many high schoolers and college students across the country and reaches a global audience through her podcast to spread that message.

Hello and welcome to episode 15 of Mind Bloom!

Listen through to learn more on how to deal and manage the throes of an anxiety and panic attack, from the very personal and intimate perspective of your host, Marina Gee.

This week's guest is Erin Horn
@strongtrueyou. The universe gifted me with the honor and the privilege to meet and interview Erin, and I couldn't be more grateful for this. Happily married for 13 years, with 4 kids, Erin Horn had to watch her youngest baby’s first steps from the hospital window shortly after she was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) during the COVID-19 shutdown.

Since Erin's diagnosis she continues to bring joy to those around her while at Clinic to her Nurses and Doctors. She also encourages and cheers on others through her journey with Leukemia on Social Media and through guest speaking on various podcasts, namely Mind Bloom.

Ep. 14: Personal Finance, Mental Health, and Mommy Guilt, with The Walter Years

Ep. 14: Personal Finance, Mental Health, and Mommy Guilt, with The Walter Years

Welcome to episode 14 of Mind Bloom

This week, your host, Marina Gee is going to share a few of the secrets she considers the most valuable for growing your engagement and following on social media, namely on Instagram, where everyone seems to be holding on to their follows, likes and comments and treating them like they are a highly valuable commodity, one that you can run out of. And can you, really? What better topic than personal financial literacy to discuss mental wellness and living your life to its full potential?

This week's guest is Tessa Walter, from The Walter Years. Tessa is the better half of a husband-and-wife partnership in financial coaching and personal finance literacy. The Walter Years, LLC is a successful entrepreneurship founded in July of 2019, and staying strong despite of (or because of) the Coronavirus pandemic, a period in which household budgeting became absolutely crucial to the lives of millions of people around the world.  The original idea behind The Walter Years was to help friends and family get out of debt and plan for early retirement.

But being a full-time entrepreneur has introduced Tessa to even more opportunities to serve others and, double whammy, to continue setting her own hours and creating her own schedule, especially now that the couple's first child is on the way. Newlyweds documenting marriage & parenting with financial coaching, thrifting and life thrown into the mix. You'll love this interview!

Ep. 13: LGBTQ, Suicide Prevention and Survival, with Pride and Joy Foundation

Welcome to episode 13 of Mind Bloom!

This week, Marina Gee, your host, shares some touching stories of camraderie in the trenches of the podcasting world. Fellow podcasters come in Marina's rescue bearing time, generosity, and availability to give and to receive. On a more intimate note, Marina tells you about a challenge she faced last week and describes its outcome. Between us, the story ends well.

This week's guest is Elena Joy Thurston. Elena is an inspirational speaker and founder of the Pride and Joy Foundation

The Pride and Joy Foundation is dedicated to building self-awareness and safety in LGBTQ families and their allies.  Its education resources teach concepts such as Core Values, Limiting Beliefs, and Self-Awareness.  Elena and her team believe that when LGBTQ and allied individuals integrate these resources, their lives and their families become stronger and safer.  Additionally, the foundation hosts an online support group: queer parents with straight kids get to receive and give support to straight parents with queer kids, and allies get to learn how to raise the next generation of allies.

Ep.11: The Purpose of Fitness and the Soul of Purpose, with Jaya Jaya Myra

Ep.11: The Purpose of Fitness and the Soul of Purpose, with Jaya Jaya Myra

Hello and welcome to episode 11 of Mind Bloom!

This week, your host, Marina Gee reflects on her intermittent relationship with physical exercise and fitness. Even though Marina ends up enjoying her workout session, once at the gym or running in the park, she finds it challenging to keep to a routine that is balanced and sustainable. That's where you come in.

This week, Marina Gee speaks with Jaya Jaya Myra, a research scientist turned natural health advocate, also known as the Wellness Lifestyle and is the go-to media expert on mind-body wellness, stress management, mindfulness, food for mood and natural, healthy living

Myra a best-selling author, TEDx and motivational speaker, and creator of The WELL Method. After healing herself naturally from debilitating fibromyalgia, Myra developed The WELL Method to teach others the four cornerstones of a healthy, purpose-driven life. Her approach to mind-body wellness, social justice, spirituality, and purpose shows why one-size-fits-all solutions don’t work for everyone, and how to find what will work for you.

Myra’s debut book, Vibrational Healing: Attain Balance & Wholeness. Understand Your Energetic Type is now published in 10 languages and is available worldwide. Her upcoming book, The Soul of Purpose, will be published in January 2021 by Post Hill Press.
