A Conversation with Rachèle DeMéo, Living her 2nd Act as Founder of Bella Terra Academy (Episode #37)

A Conversation with Rachèle DeMéo, Living her 2nd Act as Founder of Bella Terra Academy (Episode #37)

Rachèle DeMeo is a multilingual educator. Born in Southern France to English-speaking parents (her father being American-Italian and her mother, British), she was raised bilingual and multicultural. (She also speaks Italian.)

As a former college professor, Rachèle felt that in the education field, instructors are forced to teach the “classical” way, not always respecting students’ personality types, learning styles, and other individual factors (such as their strengths, weaknesses, backgrounds, etc). She had a good reputation for her creativity in teaching. But she constantly felt like she was put in a box.

She knew there were many ways students could learn and there’s not always one way that works for all.

In 2015, she started presenting workshops for other college professors. She received great feedback on how the practical activities she demonstrated in her classes, helped students best learn and use the subject long-term.

A few years back she left my successful teaching position, with the desire to define her work on her own terms as an entrepreneur and to be actively hands-on with her two sons.

Her passion drove her to launch two businesses, geared toward language learning. One, Belle Terre Academy, where she offers French courses students can take at their own pace. Another one, FLAM San Diego which is a small school providing French classes. She has trained her teachers in creative teaching and online learning as well as other specific tools to best help their students learn while having fun.

She is now a mompreneur that is an educational presenter, speaker, author of six published books, and YouTube sensation. Along the way, she has managed to homeschool her children for 3 years, while teaching part-time.

She speaks at a variety of conferences and trains other instructors

In her own words, “Since age 12, I knew I wanted to teach. I started teaching and loved it. I have a passion for languages and cultures which has influenced me in starting two businesses geared toward language learning. When you do what you love, you don’t feel like you’re “working” per se. Your passion drives you and taking time to understand the “why”, is important to help you navigate your mompreneur journey.”

She served in the US Marine Corps for four years as an Air Traffic Controller before being honorably discharged and working in the mortgage industry for 13 years as a Senior Loan Processor and Underwriter. She worked for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage for several years before their loan volume slowed and she was laid off with many of her co-workers. At that time her husband ran a successful business and together they decided that Kasey would stay home to figure out what it was that brought her joy. Kasey knew that she wanted to work in the culinary world, but she just wasn’t sure which direction to go.

So, she started a food and wine blog called Disholicious and through that blog, she met several people in the industry. One of those people was wine sommelier, Meghan Vergara of Veritas Consultants. In working with Meghan, Kasey met other people in the wine industry and she was invited to join The Women’s Wine Alliance of San Diego.

As a member of the Women’s Wine Alliance, Kasey was able to attend the SommCon in San Diego. While attending that conference, Kasey sat in on a Women in Wine event. That’s when Kasey realized that she wanted to work in the wine industry. She went home and talked with her husband about it. She decided to start the Viticulture and Enology program at MiraCosta College to complete an Associate’s Degree and she turned to the Wine and Spirits Trust of London and the Napa Valley Wine Academy to complete her WSET in wine certifications.

Kasey is now six classes away from graduating from MiraCosta College and she is about to start her level three WSET with the Napa Valley Wine Academy. After graduating, Kasey looks forward to starting a new career in wine that brings her more joy.

A Conversation with Swati Patel Mangat, Living her 2nd ACT As a Teacher Extraordinaire (Episode # 34)

A Conversation with Swati Patel Mangat, Living her 2nd ACT As a Teacher Extraordinaire (Episode # 34)

Swati studied Economics in college, and after graduating in 1993, she worked as an investment advisor trading stocks and bonds.  She also filed payroll taxes for national corporations.  She aimed to provide the best service for her clients, cultivate positive relationships, and work with teams to streamline processes.  She received an award for customer satisfaction prompted by letters of gratitude from her clients and co-workers.

During this period Swati would get married, and give birth to two beautiful girls. Around this time she chose to be a stay-at-home mom. As a hands-on mom with her daughter’s reading and scholastics, Swati discovered she had a natural love for children and teaching. As her girls got a bit older, and with other challenging life circumstances, she was faced with the need to return to work. As she considered her options as a career path, she felt a new calling. She realized that she longed for a more meaningful career, where she could continue being near children and teaching.

So, Swati decided to pursue her teaching credentials. With great determination, Swati earned her teaching credential and landed a job at her dream school in 2014.  She went on to earn a Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) certification and was able to then land her dream job of teaching gifted learners.  A few years later, she was awarded a Teacher of the Year by her colleagues.

During the pandemic, Swati taught online, and also went into the classroom to teach in person.  This difficult time solidified her belief that helping children develop not only their academic abilities, but their mindfulness and social skills, was what she was meant to do.

Swati believes that discipline, mindfulness, and positivity are the keys to a balanced life. She knows that there is always a shining light waiting for her after a difficult time has passed and that anything worth doing will be challenging.  She takes time to care for herself, her family, her friends, and her students.  She forgives herself for mistakes and looks for lessons and ways to improve every day.  She loves the quote, “Mistakes are proof that you are trying.”

A Conversation with Hosts of Life in our Skin: Anahita Champion & Lisa Harris (Episode #28)

A Conversation with Hosts of Life in our Skin: Anahita Champion & Lisa Harris (Episode #28)

Lisa and Anahita are a dynamic duo. Together they offer authentic stories of underrepresented women in their podcast Life in Our Skin. This powerfully raw podcast offers candid conversations between women who find themselves between white and black communities.

Their podcast mindfully illuminates topics including identity, culture, race, and relationships. By creating mindful awareness on these topics they are serving as champions for creating connections.

Their connection with each other is a magical combination of diversity, rich cultural history, and authentic life experiences that illustrates that all of us have more similarities than differences.

In our podcast conversation with them, we felt we were having a conversation with two old friends reflecting on our personal (and sometimes amusing) stories of being raised within multi-cultures, and navigating our way into adulthood.

A bit more about Lisa Harris:

Diversity and inclusivity are at the core of Lisa’s existence.

As a multi-racial woman, raised by an immigrant mother from the Philippines and a white father with Native American roots, Lisa’s life experience, and perspective are multi-layered. She discovered at an early age that she never quite fit in anywhere, yet she was home everywhere.

From racial diversity to growing up in a predominately white, rural Midwestern town to being a first-generation college graduate to managing over $250M at the height of her corporate career to publishing a book and founding her own business, Lisa seamlessly walks with a foot in many different worlds and believes our stories are what heals and connects us.

Lisa is a mother, wife, sister, and friend whose living her purpose. Personally and professionally, Lisa values authenticity, vulnerability, and connection in her pursuit to build bridges and spread love through the lens of our stories.

Lisa is currently the owner and founder of Lisa Harris & Company, a personal development company that connects guides, and transforms women’s lives through the power of storytelling.

Lisa’s mission is to help women shift narratives and reclaim their personal power through the lens of their own life stories.

A bit more about Anahita Champion:

Born into a deeply rooted and rich historic Persian culture, Anahita has paved a way for herself after her family immigrated to the U.S when she was just two years old. Growing up as a Persian-American has allowed her to further her experiences and diversify connections socially, culturally, and professionally. She takes pride in her cultural background as she values the camaraderie, hospitality, and respectable community she comes from.

From childhood, Anahita has had a passion for being in the entertainment limelight. From a very young age, she has enjoyed spending time with her cousins, and immersing herself in large family gatherings.

Achieving her Master’s of Arts degree in Strategic Communication from the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Anahita has found her niche in an area that she is most passionate about and on the path of public relations and marketing.

Observing her father’s and close family members’ entrepreneurial mindset, influenced her own creative, strategic, forward-thinking as well family-centric mentality. She has integrated these core values with several platforms she owns or co-founded, including MomBoss Meet-Up which echos her deep passion for supporting fellow women & mom-entrepreneurs.

On Living An Eco-conscious Lifestyle Through Sustainable Jewelry Creation, A Conversation with Alessandra Thornton (Episode #25)

On Living An Eco-conscious Lifestyle Through Sustainable Jewelry Creation, A Conversation with Alessandra Thornton (Episode #25)

Alessandra is the owner and founder of Allie Tagua Jewelry, a Sustainable Jewelry Business.

Her jewelry much like her personality echos her uniqueness, passion, and authenticity.

Allie creates bold, colorful eco jewels, that give back to the environment. Materials used to create the jewelry are repurposed natural elements that include Tagua Nut, Acacia Berry, Pambil Seeds, and Orange Peel to name a few.

Her professional journey started in Ecuador. She was once a journalist by profession, an archeologist by degree, and an ecologist by heart.

When she turned 33 she bravely moved to the United States to start a new chapter of her life as a jewelry artist and designer of eco-jewelry, giving back to her community and supporting rainforest conservation.

As a designer of organic jewelry has found a way to fuse her passion for jewelry making with her desire to repurpose natural resources while creating employment for indigenous locals.

One of her visits along with the coastal towns in Ecuador coincided with when the rivers were heavily flooded after a strong El Nino Season.

In that visit, she had her ‘Aha!’ moment, which is when she decided to dedicate her life to the making and promotion of rainforest Tagua Nuts specifically along the coast of Manabi, Ecuador. The rains were forcing the loss of the precious Tagua Nuts of the palm trees. At that specific moment, she discovered her mission. She decided to help provide locals in the rural areas during the rainy season, with another way to generate income. So she travels to that area to train locals to create the jewels, so they have employment. She believes her customers feel empowered with her statement jewels, knowing that 10% of her sales also give back to education to orphan girls in Ecuador.

Allesandra has intentionally designed her business and personal life to live an eco-conscious life.

Her travels to gather materials for her jewelry have taken her into deep spots in the Amazon forest. She has educated herself about the threats to preserved areas from the oil industry and triggering climate change.

What awakens her heart is to mindfully listen to the sounds of the rainforest in the early evening. Her fondest memories of her travels include listening to the orchestra of frogs, insects, wild cats through the night, and to awaken in the morning to the sounds of monkeys which sound like boisterous wind or a little hurricane echoing deep from the rainforest.

“Organic Jewelry by Allie” is a labor of love to create awareness about eco-friendly tagua nut jewels.

“I believe in the end, the value of the person is not in how many stocks has in the market or in the number of zeros in the bank account but in the many lives that person touched in a positive way.”

To her customers, Allie always says "It's about finding happiness in little things like accessorizing your outfit. I want you to smile any time you wear my jewels, if my jewelry has the power to make you smile, feel confident, and happy to be helping to create a better world for others then I have accomplished my mission in life.”

On an Illustrator's Discovery of Her Life Purpose as a Motivational Mindset Coach & Her Journey to Creating '100 Epic Days', a Conversation with Leeanne Brennan (Episode #21)

Leeanne is an illustrator, animator, and mindset motivator living in North Carolina. She creates sensitive, whimsical art to help unblock limiting beliefs and manifest a life you can fall in love with. She runs programs to help people start a goal, follow-through, and become the type of person that stays consistent.

She practices "gentle achievement" which celebrates the twisting, nonlinear, slow, unknown path of following the heart.

For Leeanne, only 3 years ago, the thought of creating consistent personal artwork in sporadic bursts of time throughout the day while caring for little kids, would have seemed absolutely impossible. After discovering mindfulness and manifestation and going down the personal development rabbit hole, She has completely changed how she views her life and what is possible.

Her background in animation from the Rhode Island School of Design and many years working in video games and the innovation consultancy world as a freelance illustrator/motion designer has prepared her for this particular moment in her life where she is ready to use her skills to tap into her subconscious to explain concepts around manifestation and mindset in a new way.

The art and programs that she has created are a reflection of all that she is learning as she continues to do the deep inner work that is healing her soul. She strives to remind people that our minds are malleable and capable of changing our reality. In her words “Our dreams are already true.”

On Healing from Trauma through Meditation & Yoga, A Conversation with Rebecca Hatman (Episode #17)

Rebecca is a Certified Yoga, Meditation, and Ayurvedic Lifestyle Practitioner RYT-200 I started my yoga practice at age 18 as a way to improve her endurance and keep her body healthy while skiing.

At the time, she didn't realize the profound positive effect this mindfulness practice would have on my mental health. As a survivor of childhood trauma that seemed to keep repeating, she suffered from severe depression and anxiety that nearly ended her life.

Yoga, meditation, and mindfulness were a big part of her healing journey and continue to be resources in her everyday life.

Rebecca is committed to helping others as a mindfulness educator. She started her career in mindfulness working for the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Carlsbad, California. There she learned from some of the most influential thought leaders of our time. After receiving the highest level of education from the Chopra Center, she worked as a wellness Event Manager and was able to be a part of hundreds of workshops, seminars, training, and retreats focusing on using mindfulness tools to help people feel better.

Her dad is a Marine veteran who served in the Vietnam war. She has specialized training and nearly 10 years of experience teaching trauma-conscious yoga and meditation to military veterans and their families.

She believes by giving yourself nutritious food, sleep, mindfulness practices, and surrounding yourself with the support you are cultivating resilience. Resilience to ride the ups and downs of life and enjoy the ride.

Her mantra is, “I do this for me. I do this for you. I do this for love.”

On Fleeing Zhitomir Russia to Becoming a Corporate Executive - A Conversation with Resilient Lena Polyakova (Episode #8)

[Correction: In our intro, we mistakenly mention Chernobyl as Lena's native town from Russia, when in fact she is from Zhitomir, Russia]

From fleeing Zhitomir Russia, as a young girl to Corporate Executive, Lena’s journey is a story of grit and resilience.

At the tender age of 2, during the heat of communism in Russia, Lena and her family lived behind a closet in a one-bedroom apartment issued by the government.

At the age of 3, Lena and her family are forced to escape her hometown of Zhitomir because of the poisonous gases.

By the time she is 7, Lena flees Russia with her parents and two sets of elderly grandparents without a dollar to their name and no worldly possessions. Escaping to the US as refugees in pursuit of a better life.

This young girl goes on pushing through all obstacles, translating for her family, growing, learning, prevailing against all odds. Never giving up and pulling her family and loved ones along with her with a heart of light and gratitude.

Lena is now a technology leader, a corporate executive director of the technology enablement vertical at TEKsystems, a mother of two increíble children, a wife to an amazing man, someone who uses her voice to help those around her, even when she’s tired.

Lena encourages others to know that YOU are enough and nothing is impossible with a light heart, persistence, and humor. This life is meant to be lived and we are all here for a reason so let’s.

Live. Do. Be.

On Art Therapy as a Form of Resilience: A Conversation with Denise Sarram (Episode #7)

On Art Therapy as a Form of Resilience: A Conversation with Denise Sarram (Episode #7)

Denise Bonaimo Sarram was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and on the New Jersey shore.  She relocated to Southern California in 2001 where she lives with her husband and son.

A graduate from Rowan University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and specializing in metalsmithing and jewelry making, Denise also studied foundation art at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia and spent an adventurous semester abroad traveling around Great Britain and taking college courses at Northumbria University in England.

Denise’s art assemblages and jewelry designs are thoughtfully executed with an artful eye, skillful hand, and heartfelt intentions. She is immensely grateful to have been immersed in a career creating, exhibiting, and teaching art and has also been instrumental in the local community to foster an environment of creative enrichment for various organizations for the last 25 years.

Focusing on jewelry design for many years, she has always approached it as “small scale sculpture” so making the shift towards larger-scale sculptural assemblage art was a natural progression. She bolts, drills, glues, collages, paints, sands, saws, molds, bends, sews, wire wraps, and forges the various parts of her designs to achieve a work of art that is both masterfully crafted and aesthetically intriguing.

Denise works on multiple works of art simultaneously, using elements from her extensive collection of found objects which she forages from thrift stores, antique stores, and resale shops. Throughout her entire career, there has been a theme of upcycling (which is the process of converting waste materials or cast-away objects into something of intrinsic, aesthetic, or practical value).

The theme of her current body of artwork orbits around her Sicilian family’s immigrant experiences in America and their journeys across the sea. Her pieces show the resilience of her people and that’s why she is a perfect fit for our theme of the month: Resilience.

On Resiliency through the Lens of a Soulful Photographer: A Conversation with Ashley Strong (Episode #4)

Since a little girl, Ashley has been enamored by the power of documenting moments in time. Photography was embedded in her soul.

For years, photography was a “side hustle”, something she did at nights and weekends after working her, as she says, “responsible 9-5.”  It’s only after the profound question “Am I really living or am I simply existing?” came to her, that everything changed.

She immediately brought to life a lifelong dream of teaching and living in Africa. She taught English on Mafia Island, Tanzania with World Teach, and there, she fell in love with herself, life, and with a sensationally sincere South African man, who is now her husband. She also got certified to teach around the world - which brought her to living and teaching in South Africa and Costa Rica. All the while letting her camera guide her heart and encapsulating all of the beauty she was witnessing.

Upon returning to the United States With $700 and an old car to her name, she made the bold commitment to launch her photography business, Ashley Strong Photography, full time.

Little by little, her client base started to expand, her commitment to creating an intentional business started to grow and before she knew it, she was documenting weddings around the world, inspirational entrepreneurs in her hometown, families expanding and every expression of love in-between. In 2018, she incorporated as Strong Smith, Inc and since then, she’s been humbled to expand every year. Ashley also launched Wings of a Flower Print shop - an exclusive collection of prints from Costa Rica, South Africa, and Tanzania and her mentoring and education program all while being a mama to her inspirational, unique, adventurous, and loving little girl.

Today, you can find her with her humble little family nestled in the mountains of Southern California where she spends time documenting sincere love in all forms from engagements to weddings, pregnancies to birth, new businesses to celebrating monumental growth, and everything in between.
