What Is Multiple Sclerosis? Featuring Alanna Steaple
Multiple sclerosis is a disease that impacts the brain and spinal cord which make up the central nervous system and controls everything we do. The exact cause of MS is unknown, but we do know that something triggers the immune system to attack the brain and spinal cord. The resulting damage to myelin, the protective layer insulating wire-like nerve fibers, disrupts signals to and from the brain. This interruption of communication signals causes unpredictable symptoms such as numbness, tingling, mood changes, memory problems, pain, fatigue, blindness and/or paralysis. Everyone’s experience with MS is different and these losses may be temporary or long lasting.  National Multiple Sclerosis Society Phone Number: 1-800-344-4867 Website: https://www.nationalmssociety.org/

How To Access Affordable Health Insurance | Featuring Mr. Tim Bowman
Health insurance helps you pay for medical services and sometimes prescription drugs. You and your insurer each agree to pay a certain dollar amount or percentage of your medical expenses.  Timothy Bowman has spent his life using his personal and professional experiences to help clients understand healthcare and provide them with the resources so they can make informed decisions for what is best for them.  After working exclusively for one insurance company as a captive agent, he realized that he could better serve his client base by becoming an independent agent, representing multiple insurance companies and offering his potential clients more options and benefit choices.  Educating the client on the plan options and benefits, allows each person to become empowered to make decisions for what is best for themselves. Knowledge truly is Power!  He knows from experience there is no single health plan that works best for everyone, so he continues to educate others on the health plans that are tailored for each individual's needs. He is a Licensed Insurance Agent certified to sell/market for several insurance companies.  He has worked in various insurance capacities including: Underwriting, Eligibility Determination, Risk Management, Contract Management and Medicare Sales/Marketing that enable him to have a well-rounded view of the insurance enrollment process.  He received his earlier education in the school system in Quincy, Florida and is a graduate of FAMU (Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University) with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.  Email:  GreatHealthisWealth@Mail.Com ; Cell:  850-354-1166

Stomping Out Breast Cancer with Dr. Amit Jain
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women—about 270,000 women are diagnosed each year, accounting for approximately 30% of all cancer cases, according to the American Cancer Society. Although it happens much less often, men can develop breast cancer, too.  In each of these people, breast cancer began the same way: A rogue cell began to multiply in ways it’s not supposed to, usually in the milk glands (called lobules) or the ducts that carry milk, eventually forming a tumor.  How each person's breast cancer develops from there depends on lots of variables. But importantly, most breast cancers are highly treatable. On average, the five-year survival rate (meaning: the percentage of people who are still living five years after diagnosis) for breast cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body is 90%.  Amit Jain, MD is a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. Tune Up With Your Colorectal Screening | FAMU Tune Up Program
Colorectal screening should begin at age 45 for individuals of average risk. In some cases, individuals should begin screening earlier if they have certain risk factors for colorectal cancer, including tobacco use, alcohol use, obesity and diabetes.    Screening should also begin earlier for individuals at an increased risk of developing colon cancer, including African Americans, those with a history of inflammatory bowel disease, specific genetic syndromes, history of radiation therapy to the stomach or pelvis, and those with a family history of polyps or colon cancer.  Several methods are available for colorectal cancer screening and a decision on the best approach for an individual should be made with the guidance of a physician. Routine testing can be lifesaving, as it can lead to cancer prevention.  Florida A&M University Test Up Now Education Program (TUNE-UP) Colon Cancer Screening Study  Tifini D. The Tallahassee AIDS Walk Is 9/16/21
SHOW LESSTallahassee AIDS Walk 2021   Big Bend Cares’ event, the Tallahassee AIDS Walk, draws hundreds of participants each year. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, September 16th, 2021 at Railroad Square.   Individual community members, school and university groups, companies, and faith groups are encouraged to register as individuals or as part of a team. Walkers are also encouraged to become fundraisers to help us reach our goal. After a memorial walk around Railroad Square, participants can gather at the Railroad Square Craft House.   This event is a celebration of all of those who have fought so hard to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS. All proceeds will go towards helping Big Bend Cares provide direct-care services for our clients and HIV prevention and education for the entire Big Bend region.    Why We Walk   Did you know that in the Big Bend area, 1 out of every 172 adults is living with HIV/AIDS? In the African American community, it’s 1 out of every 72 adults. And, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, more than 1.1 million people in the US are living with HIV – with 1 in 7 of them not even aware that they have the disease!   Yes, the epidemic is far from over.   This is why clients, community members, staff and advocates of Big Bend Cares, Neighborhood Medical Center, and Bond Community Health Center are walking together on Thursday, September 16th, 2021.  We walk for the more than 100,000 people living with HIV in Florida. We walk to remember those who no longer can. We walk to remind you that you’re not alone. We walk for a nation. We walk to educate. We walk for change.  The Tallahassee AIDS Walk works to raise awareness and funds to support HIV programs in the community. All proceeds will benefit our 3 local HIV/AIDS service organizations.  We honor and remember friends and family, celebrate those who are living full lives with the virus, and recognize the work that still needs to be done.   Click here to register for the walk https://bigbendcares.org/tallahassee-...

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month | Featuring Andrea K. Friall, M.D.
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Ovarian cancer is a group of diseases that originates in the ovaries, or in the related areas of the fallopian tubes and the peritoneum. Women have two ovaries that are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus. The ovaries make female hormones and produce eggs for reproduction. Women have two fallopian tubes that are a pair of long, slender tubes on each side of the uterus. Eggs pass from the ovaries through the fallopian tubes to the uterus. The peritoneum is the tissue lining that covers organs in the abdomen.  When ovarian cancer is found in its early stages, treatment works best. Ovarian cancer often causes signs and symptoms, so it is important to pay attention to your body and know what is normal for you. Symptoms may be caused by something other than cancer, but the only way to know is to see your doctor, nurse, or other health care professional.  Andrea K. Friall, M.D., is a native Floridian and received her Bachelor of Science in biology from Florida State University. She went on to study at Howard University College of Medicine for her medical degree. While at Howard, Dr. Friall was recognized for her community service and leadership. She completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology training at Tulane University. During her internship and residency at Tulane, she received many distinguished awards honoring her performance, service and teaching.  Since 2001, Dr. Friall has been a trusted physician and partner within North Florida Women's Care. She accepted the esteemed role of Chief Medical Officer for Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) in 2016. Her other roles within TMH have included: Medical Staff Chair, Medical Executive Committee member; Medical Staff Secretary/Treasurer; Credentials Committee Chair; and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Chair.  Dr. Friall is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Chair and Legislative Vice Chair for the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, District XII, Section 1. She is also a member of the National Medical Association, the William Gunn Medical Society, and the Capital Medical Society.
