How The SHE Academy Is Changing The Lives Of Our Future Women | Ms. Shaqualyn Shedrick Interview

Shaqualyn M. Shedrick, better known as Ms. Quay, was born and raised in Miami, FL. She grew up with the support of her family and community. She graduated from Florida A&M University with a Bachelors in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology. She has a strong passion for teaching, encouraging, and supporting women of all ages, specifically adolescent young women. Through various life experiences throughout her teen years and various encounters with other teen girls, she noticed a difference in happiness; this is the driving force that keeps her involved in the community daily. She dreamed of a better support system, a stronger community and a space where women of all ages could find confidence in themselves. Thus, She Academy, Inc. was born. “You get what you work for, not what you wish for.” – Ms. Quay  She Academy’s Mantra: “Supporting Her Endeavors” Ms. Quay’s day regularly includes pushing herself to do her best, to stand up for others, and to encourage other women to do the same; she believes in hard work. Her love for God, pushes her to uplift, encourage, and serve others. Being the first in her family to create an organization like She Academy, Ms. Quay has experienced the difficulty and hard work that it takes to reach her dreams. She focuses on being a problem-solver, on learning from mistakes and pushing to be better, in efforts to be an example for other girls and young women who have big dreams. This is the goal of She Academy, to set strong examples of hard work and dedication in order to inspire others to reach their goals and know that they have all they need within themselves to get where they want to be. It only takes a little practice, patience, rest, and self-discipline. Through her hard work at She Academy, Ms. Quay is teaching girls and young women that nothing should stand in the way of your dreams. She Academy is an extension of Ms. Quay and everyone involved is family. We applaud Ms. Quay for her hard work and dedication and all of the amazing things she continues to do for She Academy and the community of Tallahassee! Fun Facts about Ms. Quay:  ·       She is the oldest child in her family; she has a younger brother and a younger sister. ·       She thrives off self-care. Her hobbies include going to the spa, eating, dancing, traveling, and doing hair.  “Not all superheroes wear capes. Some of us wear polos, most of us wear smiles. The only one stopping you is you. How To Access Affordable Health Insurance | Featuring Mr. Tim Bowman

How To Access Affordable Health Insurance | Featuring Mr. Tim Bowman

Health insurance helps you pay for medical services and sometimes prescription drugs. You and your insurer each agree to pay a certain dollar amount or percentage of your medical expenses.  Timothy Bowman has spent his life using his personal and professional experiences to help clients understand healthcare and provide them with the resources so they can make informed decisions for what is best for them.  After working exclusively for one insurance company as a captive agent, he realized that he could better serve his client base by becoming an independent agent, representing multiple insurance companies and offering his potential clients more options and benefit choices.  Educating the client on the plan options and benefits, allows each person to become empowered to make decisions for what is best for themselves. Knowledge truly is Power!  He knows from experience there is no single health plan that works best for everyone, so he continues to educate others on the health plans that are tailored for each individual's needs. He is a Licensed Insurance Agent certified to sell/market for several insurance companies.  He has worked in various insurance capacities including: Underwriting, Eligibility Determination, Risk Management, Contract Management and Medicare Sales/Marketing that enable him to have a well-rounded view of the insurance enrollment process.  He received his earlier education in the school system in Quincy, Florida and is a graduate of FAMU (Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University) with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.  Email:  GreatHealthisWealth@Mail.Com ; Cell:  850-354-1166

Stomping Out Breast Cancer with Dr. Amit Jain

Stomping Out Breast Cancer with Dr. Amit Jain

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women—about 270,000 women are diagnosed each year, accounting for approximately 30% of all cancer cases, according to the American Cancer Society. Although it happens much less often, men can develop breast cancer, too.  In each of these people, breast cancer began the same way: A rogue cell began to multiply in ways it’s not supposed to, usually in the milk glands (called lobules) or the ducts that carry milk, eventually forming a tumor.  How each person's breast cancer develops from there depends on lots of variables. But importantly, most breast cancers are highly treatable. On average, the five-year survival rate (meaning: the percentage of people who are still living five years after diagnosis) for breast cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body is 90%.  Amit Jain, MD is a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. He earned his medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Science in New Delhi, India before completing residency at the University of Iowa and fellowship at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Jain practices at TMH Physician Partners – Cancer & Hematology and is board certified in medical oncology and hematology. Dr. Jain chose to become a physician because he felt it was one of the most humane professions in which he could positively affect many lives. COVID-19 vaccines are effective at protecting you from getting sick. Based on what we know about COVID-19 vaccines, people who have been fully vaccinated can do things that they had stopped doing because of the pandemic.  These recommendations can help you make decisions about daily activities after you are fully vaccinated. They are not intended for healthcare settings.  In general, people are considered fully vaccinated: ±  2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine If you don’t meet these requirements, regardless of your age, you are NOT fully vaccinated. Tune Up With Your Colorectal Screening | FAMU Tune Up Program

Tune Up With Your Colorectal Screening | FAMU Tune Up Program

Colorectal screening should begin at age 45 for individuals of average risk. In some cases, individuals should begin screening earlier if they have certain risk factors for colorectal cancer, including tobacco use, alcohol use, obesity and diabetes.    Screening should also begin earlier for individuals at an increased risk of developing colon cancer, including African Americans, those with a history of inflammatory bowel disease, specific genetic syndromes, history of radiation therapy to the stomach or pelvis, and those with a family history of polyps or colon cancer.  Several methods are available for colorectal cancer screening and a decision on the best approach for an individual should be made with the guidance of a physician. Routine testing can be lifesaving, as it can lead to cancer prevention.  Florida A&M University Test Up Now Education Program (TUNE-UP) Colon Cancer Screening Study  Tifini D. Breast Cancer Awareness in 2021 Featuring Shelby Blank, M.D.

Breast Cancer Awareness in 2021 Featuring Shelby Blank, M.D.

Shelby Blank, MD is a board-certified general surgeon at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) and Medical Director of TMH’s Walker Breast Program. Dr. Blank leads the program’s Breast Clinic, providing an unparalleled level of care and a more efficient treatment process for patients being diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer. Dr. Blank earned her graduate degree in 1994 and her medical degree in 2001 before going on to complete an internship and residency in surgery – all at the University of South Florida. Dr. Blank is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and has over 20 years of experience as a general surgeon. Her passion is providing the most comprehensive care for women’s breast health to our community, which was one of the driving factors in establishing the newest multidisciplinary Breast Clinic at TMH.   To learn more about Dr. Blank, TMH's Walker Breast Program, and the latest about breast cancer, click the link https://www.tmh.org/   Joseph Ward is the Outreach Specialist/Health Educator for the Ryan White Program with Neighborhood Medical Center.  Mathias Sweet is the Ryan White Program Director for Neighborhood Medical Center.   Visit http://www.neighborhoodmedicalcenter.... to learn more about accessing health care.   Mind Your Body & Soul is available every Wednesday at:  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Neighborhood......  More Podcast Links:   NMC Podcast: https://neighborhoodmedicalcenter.org......

The Tallahassee AIDS Walk Is 9/16/21

The Tallahassee AIDS Walk Is 9/16/21

SHOW LESSTallahassee AIDS Walk 2021

Big Bend Cares’ event, the Tallahassee AIDS Walk, draws hundreds of participants each year. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, September 16th, 2021 at Railroad Square.

Individual community members, school and university groups, companies, and faith groups are encouraged to register as individuals or as part of a team. Walkers are also encouraged to become fundraisers to help us reach our goal. After a memorial walk around Railroad Square, participants can gather at the Railroad Square Craft House.

This event is a celebration of all of those who have fought so hard to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS. All proceeds will go towards helping Big Bend Cares provide direct-care services for our clients and HIV prevention and education for the entire Big Bend region.

Why We Walk

Did you know that in the Big Bend area, 1 out of every 172 adults is living with HIV/AIDS? In the African American community, it’s 1 out of every 72 adults. And, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, more than 1.1 million people in the US are living with HIV – with 1 in 7 of them not even aware that they have the disease!

Yes, the epidemic is far from over.

This is why clients, community members, staff and advocates of Big Bend Cares, Neighborhood Medical Center, and Bond Community Health Center are walking together on Thursday, September 16th, 2021.  We walk for the more than 100,000 people living with HIV in Florida. We walk to remember those who no longer can. We walk to remind you that you’re not alone. We walk for a nation. We walk to educate. We walk for change.

The Tallahassee AIDS Walk works to raise awareness and funds to support HIV programs in the community. All proceeds will benefit our 3 local HIV/AIDS service organizations.  We honor and remember friends and family, celebrate those who are living full lives with the virus, and recognize the work that still needs to be done.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month | Featuring Andrea K. Friall, M.D.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month | Featuring Andrea K. Friall, M.D.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Ovarian cancer is a group of diseases that originates in the ovaries, or in the related areas of the fallopian tubes and the peritoneum. Women have two ovaries that are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus. The ovaries make female hormones and produce eggs for reproduction. Women have two fallopian tubes that are a pair of long, slender tubes on each side of the uterus. Eggs pass from the ovaries through the fallopian tubes to the uterus. The peritoneum is the tissue lining that covers organs in the abdomen.  When ovarian cancer is found in its early stages, treatment works best. Ovarian cancer often causes signs and symptoms, so it is important to pay attention to your body and know what is normal for you. Symptoms may be caused by something other than cancer, but the only way to know is to see your doctor, nurse, or other health care professional.  Andrea K. Friall, M.D., is a native Floridian and received her Bachelor of Science in biology from Florida State University. She went on to study at Howard University College of Medicine for her medical degree. While at Howard, Dr. Friall was recognized for her community service and leadership. She completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology training at Tulane University. During her internship and residency at Tulane, she received many distinguished awards honoring her performance, service and teaching.  Since 2001, Dr. Friall has been a trusted physician and partner within North Florida Women's Care. She accepted the esteemed role of Chief Medical Officer for Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) in 2016. Her other roles within TMH have included: Medical Staff Chair, Medical Executive Committee member; Medical Staff Secretary/Treasurer; Credentials Committee Chair; and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Chair.  Dr. Friall is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Chair and Legislative Vice Chair for the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, District XII, Section 1. She is also a member of the National Medical Association, the William Gunn Medical Society, and the Capital Medical Society. She has served as a board member of the Florida Obstetric and Gynecologic Society, as a board member of the American Red Cross.
