The date is Feb 21, 2022 The topics in today’s podcast include - [ ] Working abroad - [ ] Open campus news - [ ] My hometown I was born and raised in Silver City, New Mexico. It is located in the southwest part of America and is a fairly small town with a mere population of just 12,000 people. If you including all the surrounding areas it would be a little over 30,000 residents. Although it is a small-town it is famous for many things to see and especially experience. For instance it has clear blue skies with beautiful sunsets, rugged mountains, grassy fields with breathtaking views, streams and an abundance of magnificent wildlife. The people are just as diverse as it's environment with ranchers, miners, cowboys, small boutique shop owners and a lot of hard-working folks that are of various cultural backgrounds. Also just being only 1-hour away from the Mexican border it has a strong hispanic influence and more than half the population are bilingual and have a unique and proud cultural history. Also known as the gateway to the Gila National Forest with year-round outdoor activities like golf, fishing, mountain biking, climbing, hiking, hunting and bird-watching are just to name a few that can be enjoyed in it's four gentle seasons. During the year, with it's comfortable weather there are various events to enjoy such as the Blues Music Festival, Chocolate Fantasia, the traditional 4th of July parade or The Tour of the Gila professional bicycle race and much, much more. There are also many places I recommend to visit in the area like the Gila Cliff Dwellings, Buckhorn Saloon, Pinos Altos, Cat Walk, Cosmic Campground International Dark Sky Sanctuary, White Sands, Santa Clara Open-Pit Mine, Tyrone, Gila National Forest and the historic downtown Silver City area. Let’s get caught up with NCFL Wow it really has been a long time. I have so much to talk about but I will keep it brief let’s see first up is

NCFL had our school festival
although in these difficult times I think it was very successful and it was really good to see all the hard work that the students put in being rewarded with smiles, laughter and fun. Each class did their own unique thing and it was truly a lot of fun.

Next up Recreation Day in Osaka.
This was a lot of fun as we traveled to Universal Studios Japan. It was good to get back here and the atmosphere was so electric. From the new Super Mario area to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Just so many attractions, characters and fun Also with it being Christmas season the decorations and atmosphere was really nice.

the weather update
It has started to really get cold in the Nagoya area although no snow yet but fairly chilly days and a bit of ice here and there.

Finally let me wish all of my listeners out there a very merry Christmas and I look forward to hearing more from you as you listen to me for now

Today's topic
The beginning of EIKEN TOEIC week
and Japan has a new prime minister

A lot of things happening all over the place first the weather has just been gorgeous and wonderful the last few days. During the day it’s not so hot and in the morning there is a cool breeze in the air.

The emergency order in Japan has been lifted and Kishida Fumio has become the 100th prime minister in Japan. A little bit more info on Mr. Kishida. He was born in Tokyo but has deep roots in Hiroshima. His father and grandfather were Japanese politicians and he actually went to elementary school in the Queens neighborhood of New York because of his father’s job. He was the minister for foreign affairs and the minister of defense among other political positions in Japan. He seems to talk the truth and has a liking for Hiroshima style okonomiyaki. I wish him all the best.

Also today was the first day of EIKEN TOEIC week. Now let me tell
you a little more about EIKEN TOEIC week at NCFL

First it is a very important part of our studies here at NCFL and the EIKEN TOEIC week has been held for more than 10-years. It is conducted three times a year in May, October, and January.

NCFL students have a higher percentage of passing than the national average and it is an exciting opportunity not only to get a qualification but to improve your overall English skills.

During the week, there is a special schedule of dedicated teacher’s that really go out of their way to help students better understand English and provide the necessary knowledge to achieve students goals of passing the EIKEN examination and to achieve higher TOEIC scores.

At the end of the this week students will take the EIKEN and or TOEIC examinations. It is an advantage to take these tests in a relaxed and comfortable environment and I am looking forward to the results. Remember no matter your level NCFL can help you achieve your dreams. Do you want a job in Japan that uses English then the English Department is for you. Do you want to study abroad in an English speaking country then the English Professional Department is for you. Do you want to work at the airport or become a flight attendant then the International Airline Department is for you. Do you want to be at the heart of Japanese hospitality and want to work at a hotel or resort then the International Hotel Department is for you. Do you want to create dresses or become a bridal coordinator then the Bridal Department is for you. Or are you just wanting to become the next big thing.

The next open campus at NCFL is Saturday, October 16th and this is also the day of the Airline Industry seminar and this is the day for you if you want to become a flight attendant or just work at the airport. Also remember that from next year the International Airline Department is accepting applications from male students too.

Alright let me reminisce and give you a where I was on this date 3-years ago today. Well on this date in history
I escorted another group of NCFL students on a English study abroad trip to Southern Cross University in Australia. On this day we took a trip to the famous Gold Coast and explored its spectator views and it is easy to see why they call it Surfers Paradise.

Southern Cross University is powered by passion and is driven by excellence. SCU has a desire to constantly build on the quality of their teaching and research. It is a university of great achievements and is surrounded by ambitious students, amazing and dedicated colleagues and environments of stunning natural beauty. It has 3–main campuses, at Lismore in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, on the Gold Coast across from Kirra Beach and in picturesque Coffs Harbour, are the envy of Australia. Whale-watching from a Gold Coast classroom or spotting a koala from a Lismore lab are part of the unique Southern Cross experience.
Southern Cross is deeply rooted in its regional communities and demonstrates that world-class research, teaching and learning thrives outside metropolitan centres. They create and apply knowledge in partnership with our communities in fields that are regionally relevant and globally significant.
A world-ranked university, but the greatest measures of its success are the careers they have fostered among 66,000 alumni, who stride a global stage with confidence.

Now let’s listen to the sound of waves from the Gold Coast of Australia.

Now it is 9:45pm on September 13, 2021 Wow I almost didn’t get this one in but here we go. Alright no weather update today but let me reminisce and give you a where I was on this date 4-years ago today. To give you a slight background on this history lesson. I led a study abroad group of students from NCFL to study at one of our partner universities in England at Burton & South Derbyshire College. We have a great relationship with BSDC and we are excited about the many opportunities and possibilities to come. So on this date 4-years ago I (and the NCFL students) took a short day trip from Burton Upon Trent where BSDC is located to the beautiful countryside of England and let me tell you the entire trip on the bus or I think as they refer to it in England a motorcoach looking out the window was breathtaking like a painting of the absolutely gorgeous English countryside. We arrived at a place called the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and in the beautiful countryside there was large displays of Art that made for some real great picture memories. Also we (as I was told) did something British and had a sack lunch outdoors in this great setting. It was just totally awesome and that happened on September 13, 2017 Today's topic The Terry Fox Run Terrance Stanley Fox (July 28, 1958 – June 28, 1981) was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. The Terry Fox Run is an annual non-competitive charity event held in numerous regions around the world in commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, and his Marathon of Hope, and to raise money for cancer research. The event was founded in 1981 by Isadore Sharp who had contacted Terry in hospital by telegram and expressed his wishes to hold an annual run in Terry's name to raise funds for cancer research. Sharp had lost his son to cancer in 1979. The event is held every year on the second Sunday following Labour day. Since its inception, it has raised via the 'Terry Fox Foundation' over $750 million The run is informal which means that the distance often varies, usually between 5 and 15 kilometres; participation is considered to be more important than completing the set distance. There are also runs set up by schools of every level, often with shorter distances than the "official" ones. The Terry Fox Run has no corporate sponsorship, in accordance with Terry Fox's original wishes of not seeking fame or fortune from his endeavour. During his cross-Canada run, he rejected every endorsement he was offered as he felt that it would detract from his goal of creating public awareness. The Terry Fox Runs have no advertisements on any race related materials (such as T-shirts, banners, etc.). Getting ready for classes to begin and more information about the Imaike area.

Well summer vacation is winding down and it’s time to get back to school. It’s always a pleasure to welcome back students and especially this year with all the difficulties in the world. I hope that everyone has been able to take advantage of the presumably more time at home and have made just as many summer memories as you did prior to Covid. Let’s all listen to the experts and do what we can and hopefully sooner than later things will get better.

Well now I’d like to talk a little bit more about the area around NCFL. First NCFL is located in the Chikusa-ward of Nagoya city in an area called Imaike. Imaike has two-subway lines that make commuting to our school really easy and we are just a short walk from Imaike station. In recent years the Imaike area has developed greatly and many more businesses and shops are choosing the Imaike area to set up. This has made an impact on the area and you can see many more younger workers especially around the station area. Which in turn has led to the increased selection of restaurants to choose from and believe me there is quite a variety of places to eat. My personal favorite is Craft Sandwich and you will often see me enjoying a great meal sitting at my window seat.
In addition to this there are also two supermarkets that offer many great lunch options for everyone to choose from. Also located very close to NCFL is a 7-11 convenience store or as they say in Japanese combini. Japanese combini are famous for their superior quality and reasonable pricing. Almost next door to NCFL is a donut shop called Mr. Donuts and for those who enjoy coffee there is a Doutor coffee shop too. Imaike also boasts to have two 100-yen shops and a Don Quijote shop that sells just about everything under the sun. The city of Nagoya has taken notice of this popularity of Imaike and is in the process of beautifying the sidewalks and improving bicycle safety for everyone. A closer look near the station and you will find public art designed by a famous New Yorker and a variety of animal statues like giraffes and elephants. If the history of this area is your thing then look no further then the statues of horses located near the post office that explain the history of Imaike and how horses use to roam around and quench their thirst at the lake that was in the area. Today’s English tip!
Simply writing words down on paper. Nowadays it is convenient to do everything on our phones and computer however sometimes to engage your mind I encourage you to write down vocabulary words on paper every once in awhile and if you do this on a consistent basis your English will surely improve.

The next open campus at NCFL is almost here and I look forward to seeing you then.

Today's topic Two-student opinions on what they have learned in their studies at NCFL This is the viewpoint of a first year student. “Hello everyone. Thank you for listening today. I’m a first-year student and I’m going to talk about what I have learned so far in the English Department. The first thing is obviously English. In these first few months. I have greatly improved my English because of the many English classes we have. I especially like my TOEIC class and my grammar was not so good but I speak English a lot and the teachers always correct my English so this makes me better understand foreign cultures and makes me happy. Also my listening skills have gotten better too and when you enter this school you are going to hear a lot of English everyday. Naturally your understanding will get better and your pronunciation will improve too. The second thing I’ve learned is to have more confidence. This is actually one of of the reasons why I entered this school. Because when I saw the second-year students, I liked how they had so much confidence when they talked so, I thought that I wanted to be more confident like them. Well since I entered NCFL, thanks to all my classes and this all English environment I have started to have a little confidence with my English and with myself. In my opinion, having confidence is very important part of life. If you don't have confidence just yet that is ok but just keep trying. I am really grateful to this school and teachers for improving my English and giving me more confidence. Thank you.” Now let’s listen to what a second year student says. “Yes, I’m a second-year student in the English Department. Today, I want to tell you about how I have grown over my first year at NCFL. Well first of all my English skills have improved and actually when I was a high school, I couldn’t speak English very well and I didn’t understand grammar that well either. Now I am enjoying my school life and have a habit of studying English everyday, so I have seen improvements in my English skills. After I entered NCFL I have continued to study English every day and have a lot of teachers who care about me and my dreams. They teach us English in detail and very clearly. Thanks to teachers and my efforts, I was able to pass the EIKEN pre1 examination. I hope that you can find-out what your interest is and cherish it. Second, I have learned many other things too and I am able to look around more and have more confidence. Actually before I would only think about myself but now I can help others and understand society more. Finally , I have become more comfortable especially speaking in front of people. When I first gave speech like this I was so nervous and couldn’t even remember what I said but my nervousness has decreased and I am proud to say that I am a good public speaker now. Sometimes failure can help you focus better and succeed. I want everyone to do your best and challenge many things. Thank you for listening.”I would like to give a special mahalo to Airiさん and Makikoさんfor participating in this podcast. Today’s English tip! Don’t be shy and speak your mind. No matter what your English level is just use the words you know. If you can learn new words, vocabulary and phrases then use that new information to express yourself. You will be on your way to success! I know that it is easier said then done but let’s start together! And Coming up this week at NCFL there is an open campus on Saturday, August 28, 2021.Please register and join us and if you tell Mr. McMillan “I subscribed and listen to your podcast. I will give you a delicious American cookie. 今週の8月28日(土曜日)に NCFL で体験入学が開催される予定です。先ずはしたのリンクで参加してください。このリンク↓ ↓ ↓ から参加↓↓↓ https://www.school-go.info/e8wn2e/ncfl/form.php?fno=5&fsno=1&nnso=3 マクミラン先生にポッドキャストを聞いてるよと伝えるとステキなアメリカン・クッキーをプレゼントをします。That’s all for now and this is the 名古屋外語・ホテル・ブライダル専門学校 Nagoya College of Foreign Languages A professional training college in the Denpa Educational Institution!

Today's topic My first culture shock in Japan and the English Professional Department I am so happy to talk more about the English Professional Department as study abroad is so dear to my heart. Let me explain, many years ago when I was a college student at NMSU in America my major was Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management. In those days most universities required students to take some classes in a foreign language to expose to them a different culture and make students more international. For me I really enjoyed learning about various cultures around the world and with extra encouragement from my friend Eric Frappier, I started to study Japanese at NMSU. It soon then became my dream to visit the land of the rising sun and not much longer after mastering some simple phrases, learning the hiragana alphabet and a few kanji the opportunity arose for me to make the journey to Japan. I was excited as ever and imagined a lot of far-east experiences that awaited me. Of course, to make it all happen I received a lot of help from the NMSU study abroad office, my family, classmates, friends and most of all from my Japanese teacher at NMSU Henmi先生. It is hard to explain something that one has not experienced and also you have to keep in mind that during this time the internet had just gotten into the mainstream so there was no Siri and you could not just google something. Overall I got a lot of help and I am still grateful to this day. This reminds me of one of the first things that surprised me about Japan. I was living in a mansion and at the entrance you had to put a card-like key in a slot to open the front doors and also to open up your room door but these doors were the automatic kind and growing up in Silver City, New Mexico the only places that had automatic doors was the bank and the grocery store so to have them at my place of residence was very fascinating and intriguing to me. Now this seems funny and probably strange but at the time it was a small culture shock for me. These cultural differences are one of the many reasons why I love teaching at NCFL and so proud of our students who have achieved success of their own in foreign countries. I would love to get into more details about other things that surprised me and more about my experiences in Japan another time. Now I want to tell you more about the English Professional Department is the first 4-year program at a vocational school now referred to as a professional training college for English studies in the Chubu area. For the first-two years students improve their English skills, brush up on foreign cultures and prepare for life abroad. Classes range from general English conversation and hospitality English to IELTS and TOEFL. Then in the students 3rd year they will do a study abroad at one of our partner institutions for one-academic year. NCFL partner institutions are Niagara College in Canada https://www.niagaracollege.ca/ Burton and South Derbyshire College in England https://www.bsdc.ac.uk/ Southern Cross University in Australia https://www.scu.edu.au/ and New Mexico State University in America. https://www.nmsu.edu NCFL works closely with our partner institutions and we have sent groups of students to participate in study abroad exchanges on average for about one-month. I can personally say that I have stayed and experienced all of these places of higher learning and can guarantee that whichever place you go you will have the time of your life. Upon completion of your 3rd year of study. You will then have the opportunity to continue at that institution and graduate if you met the specific graduation requirements or return back to NCFL to complete your 4th year of study at NCFL. Either way will have the full-support of all the teachers to assist you in job hunting. The English Professional Department is for students who want to do a longer term study abroad and if that is you please log on to our homepage and join us for an open campus.

Today's topic
Ways to improve your English speaking.

So I’d like to tell you about ways to improve your English speaking. First, in order to practice your speaking it is good to brush up on your reading and vocabulary. You can do this by reading sentences from English books or magazines. You can easily go to your local bookstore and find reading materials that interest you and remember to pace yourself and not try to do too much all at once. Next up you will need to practice speaking and again you want to start at an easy pace. First, ask yourself easy questions and try to build up your vocabulary on a particular topic. Then next up you want to be able to carry a conversation and to do this just takes practice. So a conversation is more than just responses of yes or no but to elaborate and use vocabulary to make a parade of words for the listener. However no matter what your level of English is you can have a conversation.
I suggest starting with easy topics such as the weather or what you did last weekend or just a simple as what did you have for lunch today? If you have a English speaking friend that is best but of course you could ask yourself easy questions and remember to try to give as much details as possible. This is a great way to increase your confidence in English.
Next up let's listen to my Canadian friend. He is talking about a famous tourist place in Canada.Listen carefully and try to understand as much as you can. Where is this place located and what things are nearby? Remember that repetition is key so feel free to play this part many times.
Now, let’s take a listen. Well how how much did you understand? I hope that you continue to listen and try to speak English with me.

Today’s English tip!
Slang is fairly common in America. It is basically sayings and colloquialisms that people use in a wide variety of casual situations. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned English speaker, you will want to brush up on your command of American slang. Did you also know that slang can refer to informal vocabulary words that aren’t typically found in a dictionary.

So let’s learn some American slang together.
Our 1st American slang is
to pig out
Pigs are not the cleanest animals, and when they eat, it usually is not pretty. That’s why Americans use the expression “to pig out” to describe when someone eats a lot of food usually in a messy way. Example sentences:
#1 While I was watching a movie,
I pigged out on popcorn.
#2 The food at La Posta is always very good and you can always pig out. Our 2nd American slang is
to take a raincheck
If a friend wants you to do something with them and you are not available at that moment, you can say “Can I take a raincheck?” It means “I can’t now, but I’d like to another time.”
The expression comes from baseball. If the weather is bad, spectators can get a ticket to come see the game on another day. Example sentences:
#1 Sorry, I have to work tomorrow, can I take a raincheck on your invite to dinner?
#2 Hey dude, I’m sorry to say that I have to take a raincheck on that beer. The queen of England invited me to a formal reception tomorrow.

I encourage you to practice and use American slang in your next English conversation.

Today's topic
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics

After a delayed start due to the pandemic, the postponed Tokyo Olympics have officially started and here are just a few facts.
For starters there are around 11,000 athletes from 205 countries. There have been 5,000 medals made from recycled electronics. For these Olympic Games four new sports have been added; Karate, Sport Climbing, Skateboarding and Surfing. These new events gives it a more youthful feel I think. It has also brought back a couple of favorite sports in baseball and softball. The centerpiece is definitely the Japan National Stadium. The stadium features wood on both the exterior and interior. As an ode to Japan, the wood is sourced from all of Japan’s 47 prefectures. It was designed by Kengo Kuma and he describes the structure as a living tree, built in a way to maximize the breeze flowing through the stadium in order to rely less on air conditioning. One of the main themes of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is sustainability and to promote sustainability the olympics are repurposing a number of the venues used in the 1964 Olympic Games. Moreover, not just the medals are made from recycled cell phones but things such as the podiums, some uniforms and even the beds at the Olympic Village are made from cardboard, which will be recycled after the Games. Another key component of the Games is the Olympic torch. The stunning torch used for the Tokyo Olympic Torch Relay was designed to resemble cherry blossoms. A renowned symbol of Japan that began in March this year to coincide with the cherry blossom season and has travelled all across Japan. The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics looked fairly normal with delegations of athletes decked out in clothes representing their countries marching triumphantly into the stadium, waving flags. A beautiful choreographed spectacle from the host country, Japan celebrates its art and traditions but as we know these are not normal times. The organizers faced a challenge in striking the right tone at the start of these postponed Games. The ceremony is an effort to inspire people around the globe by celebrating the world’s best athletes coming together, while also acknowledging the trouble and anxiety these Games have caused. It featured a moment of silence for the lives lost to COVID-19. Health care workers were honored and an elaborate dance and lights routine acknowledged the isolation the athletes and everyone else have faced during the pandemic. The honor of lighting the Olympic flame went to Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka. My favorite thing about the opening ceremony was the live performance of the 50-pictograms created originally by 1964 Olympic committee. It was humorous and very well planned. Japan has been doing very well and has already achieved a record breaking performance in the amount of medals won. I have enjoyed watching these Olympics and really like to see the different athletes participating in all kinds of sports. I have really enjoyed softball, skateboarding, badminton, table tennis, judo and track and field events have been the most memorable for me.

Today's topic
A passion for food can lead to endless discoveries of new cultures.

Food plays a huge role in many cultures around the world and there are numerous things that we can learn about food. From cooking terms and varieties of vegetables to finding unique ways of using condiments like ketchup or mayonnaise. Please learn more about your own areas local cuisine and traditions so that you can better describe it to overseas visitors. This will not only help you improve your English but also provide you with an insight on a fascinating culture and maybe you can start the next food trend.
I also highly recommend that you learn new vocabulary words and sayings to better describe different foods and ways of eating them. Be absolutely sure to research as much as you can about your favorite food too so that when someone asks you what your favorite food is you can give more details such as where it is the most famous, or how it is made and what are the main ingredients. You should also be able to give directions to your favorite restaurant and list off the popular dishes. Are there any foods that you can cook? Or what is the strangest food that you have ever tried? Nowadays Japanese foods such as sushi and ramen have gained worldwide popularity and so there is a lot of information just at your fingertips.
One of the many things that I enjoy about Japan is that all of the regions and areas of Japan have their own speciality foods and that with each coming season brings different styles of cuisines of local ingredients and are presented like works of art. So depending on the season foods can be eaten differently. For example, another dish gaining popularity is called udon.
Udon is a thick noodle made from wheat flour. It can be eaten cold in the hot summer but can also be eaten hot in winter. Food and culture are intertwined with the local people and it makes for great opportunities to better understand different cultures.
Nagoya is no different and has some really fantastic foods that I look forward to introducing to you all in the future. By the way if you want the best tasting green chili or the best Mexican food in the world look no further than my great home state of New Mexico. Today’s English tip!
Do you know that Americans often use idioms. Idioms are words, phrases or expressions which are commonly used in everyday conversation by native speakers of English. Learning the most well-known idioms will help make your English sound more fluent. So let’s learn two idioms together.

Our 1st idiom is:
(pass with flying colors)
To pass with flying colors means to pass or complete something successfully, with high scores or with distinction.
For example, you can say
She is a real genius. She passed the test with flying colors.

Our 2nd idiom is:
(elbow grease)
This means to do something with hard physical effort. For example, with a lot of study, hard effort and elbow grease you will be able to speak English with confidence.
I encourage you to practice and use these idioms in your next English conversation. If you are interested in learning more about NCFL I encourage you to participate in an open campus. Registration and information can be found on our official homepage.
