Forgiveness without Limit | The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Forgiveness without Limit | The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

That’s what real forgiveness is. It doesn’t take count. It doesn’t expire. It doesn’t come in different sizes. It doesn’t stop after seven times, and it doesn’t stop after seventy-seven times. How could we ever refuse to forgive when God has been so generous to us? Forgiveness isn’t just an act, but it’s an attitude. We were “in sin.” As baptized children of God our whole life is a life of repentance. And renewed by the Holy Spirit, with hearts cleansed from sin, so too from us flows forgiveness without limit. As the Word Is Sown, God Grows His Kingdom | The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

It’s the mighty Word of God at work in us, the word that proclaims that proclaims that by Jesus’ death our sins are forgiven, and that by his resurrection we have new life. It’s the word that takes root in our hearts and leads us to stand tall in the light of God’s glory with the joy of his righteousness. It’s that word in our lives that bears fruit for this life and for eternal life.

Baptized into Death and Life | The Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

Baptized into Death and Life | The Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

In your baptism you have a new life. A life free from sin. A life to live before God, loving him above all things, not for fear of punishment, but in the peace of forgiveness and salvation, given to you freely by God. In their last minutes of this life, knowing the heaven that awaited them, the first Lutheran martyrs, Hendrik Voes and Johann van Esschen, sang praises to God their Savior. We will see them at the resurrection. May God grant us such a faith, a faith to say, “I am at peace. Death, what can you do to me? I already died. I’ve been baptized into Christ, into his death, into his life.”

The Passion History of Our Lord - Lesson 5

They crucified him there with the criminals, one on his right and the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” ... Jesus Gives Living Water to Every Soul that Thirsts | The Second Sunday in Lent

Jesus Gives Living Water to Every Soul that Thirsts | The Second Sunday in Lent

Jesus still changes people’s lives. He still comes to the dry wilderness of our hearts. One by one he works in us through his word. He takes our tangled mess of sins on himself. He gives us living water that bubbles up to eternal life. “I am he” he says. You aren’t lost. No more desperate searching is needed. You don’t need to die in the desert of your soul. Find in Jesus the water of life. Drink in his precious Word. Be satisfied with his perfect righteousness, the righteousness that gives you life, that refreshes your soul.

In the Battle of Good and Evil, Jesus Overcomes | The First Sunday in Lent

In the Battle of Good and Evil, Jesus Overcomes | The First Sunday in Lent

With Jesus as our hero, our victory is sure. Because Jesus did finish the fight. He did go to the cross. He did sacrifice himself. He did die to ensure Satan’s destruction. And he rose again from death to take up a rule far greater than anything the Devil could give him. He rules a kingdom of peace and righteousness for all his people, where our sins are no more, where Satan cannot harm us.The battle of good and evil continues on in this life. So take up your sword, O Christian, and fight the good fight. You know whom you follow. In the battle of good and evil, Jesus overcomes.

Listen to Our Glorious Jesus | The Transfiguration of our Lord

Listen to Our Glorious Jesus | The Transfiguration of our Lord

The transfiguration is the precipice that overlooks the road into Lent.  How Mt Calvary stands in contrast to this glorious mountain! Peter said,  “Lord, it is good for us to be here!” He wanted to stay forever. Jesus  could have stayed on the mount of transfiguration, but we couldn’t. And  so he didn’t either. He came down from that mountain of light to another  mountain, a mountain of darkness, from a mountain of brilliant glory to  a mountain of suffering and pain and death. He does all this so that  his glory is not out of our reach, not a consuming fire for our sins,  not terrifying to behold. Instead, clothed with his righteousness, his  heavenly glory is our joy.

Only Perfect Righteousness Will Do | The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany

Only Perfect Righteousness Will Do | The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany

We all want to be righteous. We act as if that’s who we are. We cover  our sins as if they don’t exist. But only Jesus can take our sins away.  Only he can offer us true peace that comes with the forgiveness of sins.  Knowing what Jesus has done for us makes it so that we don’t have to be  afraid to confess our guilt. Yes, I have sinned. Yes, I do deserve  God’s wrath and condemnation. I deserve hell. In my life, in my heart  are wicked things so shameful they make me weep. But God directs my  tear-filled eyes to look to the cross. He says, “Do you see what I have  done? There’s your judgment. There’s your condemnation. There’s your  hell. It’s on Jesus. His perfect life and innocent sacrifice has saved  you. It’s with his name that I have washed you of your guilt in Baptism.  It’s with his holy body and blood that you are fed.”

Jesus Makes Us Salt and Light | The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany

Jesus Makes Us Salt and Light | The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany

That is why we are the salt of the earth. That is why we are the light of the world. Jesus has not done away with the law, but by fulfilling the law and giving us his righteousness, he has changed our relationship to the law – from a heavy burden and a fearful threat to a guide to joyful service to our God and Savior. And he's changed our relationship with God so that we are no longer enemies but dearly loved children. Be the salt that Jesus has made you. Be the lamp shining with his light before all people, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

What Kind of Person Is Blessed? | The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany

What Kind of Person Is Blessed? | The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany

We find the surety of this, that we are blessed by God, not in the earthly blessings of wealth and self-sufficiency and success, but in God’s promise. We find it in the cross. We find it in the sacraments, where water is poured on you along with God’s name, and where bread and wine are Jesus’ own body and blood for your forgiveness. Whether you are rich or poor, whether your life is filled with successes or failures, you are the kind of person who is blessed by God, because God’s undeserved love is for you, because Jesus died for you, and because God never breaks his promises.

Followers of Jesus Have Their Treasure in Heaven | The Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost

Dear brothers and sisters, never forget the greatest treasure that is yours in heaven. Be like the servants in Jesus’ parable who are always watching for their master’s return. Prepare your heart with the Word of God and the washing of Baptism. Keep your lamps burning with prayer and meditation. Stay alert with the refreshment of the Lord’s Supper. Be wise about the things you hold onto. Be generous with those in need. Do not worry and do not be afraid. Your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom!

Followers of Jesus Listen to His Word | The Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

We get distracted by all the busyness of life. There’s so much going on, so much to do! And here is Jesus, where two or three are gathered in his name. Here is Jesus, the Son of God, your Savior from sin and death. You can chase after little league games, and school band concerts, and projects for work, and doctor appointments, and sometimes those are good things to do. You can dedicate every minute of your life and every ounce of your energy to serving other people. But there’s one thing that is needed. The word of Jesus is our rest. The word of Jesus is our life.

Followers of Jesus Love Their Neighbor | The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

Followers of Jesus Love Their Neighbor | The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

Jesus made himself our perfect neighbor despite our never having deserved his love or mercy. And he continues to be a perfect neighbor to us. He isn’t hard to find. He’s never far away, but remains close to us at all times, protecting us with his mighty power. He comes to us in Word and Sacrament, forgives our sins, binds our wounds, and gives us life. With this new life from Jesus we want to love our neighbor. These days people often virtue-signal with an easy and false love for people who aren’t really their neighbor at all. But what we learn from Jesus is a real and self-sacrificing love for the people around us that he’s brought into our lives.

Followers of Jesus Trust Him to Provide a Harvest | The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

Thanks be to God that Jesus doesn’t reject us! He himself is the one who cures our malaise, takes away our despair, and forgives our sins. He who sent those 72 continues in his grace to send us messengers to proclaim his kingdom. Through the work of those servants our Lord washes us in baptism and feeds us in his supper. He makes us his dear children. Each day in him is a new day to trust him and to share the harvest of blessings he gives us with one another.

Followers of Jesus Don't Look Back | The Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

Jesus is not just calling us to follow him without looking back. He’s also the one who enables us to follow him. He raises us from death to life. He sends the Holy Spirit who by Word and Sacrament makes us new people. He teaches us to follow him with complete commitment, not looking back at the sins we’ve left behind or at this world and its temptations, but with eyes fixed on Jesus. When we know how great his love for us is and how complete is his salvation, what is there to look back for? Heaven is what lies ahead!

Followers of Jesus Bear a Cross | The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

Followers of Jesus Bear a Cross | The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

Jesus has taken up the cross of your sins. He bore their full weight on himself so that you might be freed from sin and guilt. He rose from death so that you would know that death is not your end. He’s the one who gives you the desire to follow him in the first place as he works in you through his precious Gospel. He’s also the one who gives you the cross to take up daily as you follow him. That might include facing persecution and suffering in this life, but at its heart, the cross we bear is just what he says, it’s to deny ourselves. If I’m no longer clinging to this life and to the sins I fill my life with, my hands are free to cling to Jesus. I don’t need to live for myself when I know that Jesus lives for me. I’ve been buried with Christ in baptism. I die to sin every day. His own holy body and blood are my food to give me life in him.

Faith Trusts Jesus Even in the Face of Death | The Third Sunday after Pentecost

Faith Trusts Jesus Even in the Face of Death | The Third Sunday after Pentecost

Jesus is our compassionate Lord. It was his compassion that led him to come into this world to take our place under the law. It was his compassion for us that led him to the cross to suffer for our sins. It was his compassion for us that led him to taste death, to die on our behalf. When that day comes that we do face the chill of death and Satan says, “It’s all over. No one’s going to save you. You’re all alone now.” We have this comfort that where we go our compassionate Lord has gone before. And we can even go farther than that. We can say, “No, Satan. I’ve been here before. I was buried with Christ in baptism. I died with him. I was crucified with him. And now because he lives I live forever.”

Faith Trusts that Jesus Helps the Unworthy | The Second Sunday after Pentecost

Faith Trusts that Jesus Helps the Unworthy | The Second Sunday after Pentecost

That death that Jesus suffered on the cross – that wasn’t for holy people. It was for sinners. That hell that was poured out on him while the sun itself went dark was for sinners, for you and for me and for every deed that we’ve done and every word we’ve spoken and for every thought hidden in the dusty cupboards of our hearts that makes us unworthy to call on him, to stand before him, to have him come under our roof or anywhere near us. Jesus knows thosesins, every one of them. He paid for those sins on the cross. He washed those sins away in your Baptism. He gives his own holy body and blood as food and drink to unworthy sinners, for the forgiveness of sins.

Our Triune God Guides Us in Truth | The First Sunday after Pentecost: Holy Trinity Sunday

How do we know what’s true? How do we know that God is something? How do we know that God is Triune? The answer is not to look for signs in the heavens above, or the earth below. It’s not to feel about in the dark sin-filled caverns of our hearts. Instead, we carefully and thoughtfully examine teachings. The Holy Spirit doesn’t work in a vacuum. He works through word and sacrament. This is where our holy God comes to us. Study his word. Examine it. Learn it. Compare it to the word of others. Listen to the spiritual leaders God has placed over you, who proclaim and teach the truth of that word.

Jesus Ascended to Heaven to Unite His People | The Seventh Sunday of Easter

Jesus ascended into heaven to unite his people to himself, and he’s  still doing that today. All over the world today the saving love of  Christ is being proclaimed. All over the world people are rejoicing to  know what God has done for them. And finally, on the last day, Jesus  will put an end to every division. In heaven there will be no false  doctrines. Let us then stand blamelessly before him. Let us unite and  confess his word in all truth and purity, so that our God—Father, Son,  and Holy Spirit—may be glorified. Our Lord Jesus has ascended on high.  He reigns forever. Alleluia!

So how do you go on after Easter? You go on in awe of the risen Jesus. Like Jesus taught his disciples you care for those who are in need, who are sick or hungry, who are suffering in their bodies or in their minds. And you proclaim the good news. Jesus died and rose again. Your sins are forgiven. The chains of death are shattered. You belong to God. He’s still the same Jesus. And he is coming again. And when he does, we won’t dare to ask him, “Who are you?” We’ll know it’s the Lord. He lives – our Lord, our Savior, our God.

What's Impossible Must Be True | The Second Sunday of Easter

Our Lord Jesus does not abandon us to our foolish, blind unbelief. He comes to us in Word and Sacrament. He addresses us like Thomas, and like John in Revelation. “See my hands and my side! Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last— the Living One. I was dead and, see, I am alive forever and ever! I hold the keys of death and hell.” Is it impossible? The evidence is before you. By his life Jesus gives you life. Jesus gives you peace.

Instead, he rides in humility, while his lowly disciples praise his name, with his goal our salvation. This Lamb of God rides into Jerusalem to do battle on our behalf. He will not wear a suit of armor, but a crown of thorns. He heads not to a throne, but a cross. As our King he fights for us. He destroys our enemies. He defends us from danger. He lives and rules over all things. He will come again to be our judge.

The Stone That the Builders Rejected Has Become the Cornerstone | The Fifth Sunday in Lent

The Stone That the Builders Rejected Has Become the Cornerstone | The Fifth Sunday in Lent

It’s ironic, isn’t it, that so many times we’ve gone our own way, seeking our own form of righteousness, bearing the guilt of our sins, when Jesus has been right there all along? The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. Let us build on him, our cornerstone.Let us give thanks to be tenants in his vineyard and bring him all the fruits of our lives with joy. In his love for us, Jesus takes away our sins. And there is nothing ironic about God’s love.

The Lord Loves to Find the Lost | The Fourth Sunday in Lent

The Lord Loves to Find the Lost | The Fourth Sunday in Lent

The Lord, our Father, loves to find the lost. He corrects us with his word, and strengthens and comforts us with his sacraments. He forgives our sins and restores us. He calls us to rejoice with him over the life he has given us and over every sinner who repents. “I was dead, but am  alive again. I was lost and am found.”

The Lord Remembers His People to Rescue Them | The Third Sunday in Lent

The Lord Remembers His People to Rescue Them | The Third Sunday in Lent

If we truly believe that God knows our suffering, that can only lead to  two outcomes. Either we curse God, or we repent. If we believe that God  knows our suffering and won’t do anything about it, or doesn’t care,  we’ll curse God, as Job’s wife suggested to him, “Curse God and die!”  But then, what is the cross? Look at that cross and see the Son of God  suffering and dying for you. God is not a distant God, an uncaring God,  or a forgetful God. He is our God, the God of our fathers, from  generation to generation. He’s our faithful God. He’s our forgiving God.

A Doomed Mission that Couldn't Fail | The Second Sunday in Lent

A Doomed Mission that Couldn't Fail | The Second Sunday in Lent

“It is finished,” he cried from the cross. Heaven is ours. There is our citizenship; it is sealed in his blood. Follow Jesus to the cross, not with a defeatist and hopeless attitude. Follow him with joy and confidence as the victor you are. That’s what Jesus has made you. This world has no power over you. Heaven is your home.

Jesus Battles the Devil to Bring Us Peace | The First Sunday in Lent

Jesus Battles the Devil to Bring Us Peace | The First Sunday in Lent

Jesus entered this world of sin not with a mighty army, but alone. He came to face the temptations of the Devil for every time that you and I have given in. By taking on Satan’s temptations in our place, and by paying for us with his own blood, Jesus sets us free. That is our King of kings and Lord of lords. He’s the one who gave his life for us and rose again in glory. Trust in your Lord to save you.

Repent Like You Mean It | Ash Wednesday

Repent Like You Mean It | Ash Wednesday

This Lent, repent like you mean it. God reconciles us to himself and that leads us to give heartfelt apologies to people we hurt, and to live lives that are characterized by sincere repentance. If you wear ashes, wear them like you mean it. If you give something up or fast, fast like you mean it. Come to church like you mean it. Pray like you mean it. Confess your sins like you mean it. Because God always forgives like he means it. The cross isn’t for show. It’s where your Savior poured out his blood for you. You are justified for Jesus’ sake. He gives you a clean heart, a humble heart, a repentant heart.

Jesus Reveals His Not-So-Secret Identity | The Transfiguration of our Lord

Jesus Reveals His Not-So-Secret Identity | The Transfiguration of our Lord

The glory of Jesus that shone on the mountain of transfiguration was a glimpse of the glory of heaven. That glory is not seen in full for us, not yet. Jesus didn’t come to display an unattainable superhuman glory to us. He came to bring heaven to us through the cross. How glorious is that cross! Dear Christians, take up your cross. Wear your identity for all to see. Follow Jesus until he brings you to your glorious heavenly goal.

Love Your Enemies | The Seventh Sunday after the Epiphany

Love Your Enemies | The Seventh Sunday after the Epiphany

Joseph knew that there was nothing for him to gain by seeking justice or revenge against his brothers. He was already running all of Egypt. He trusted that God was merciful to him while things were bad and even after he was in charge he still humbly declared that it was God who placed him there. Even if his brothers didn’t repent they couldn’t take that away from him. How much more secure is your status as God’s own dearly loved child? You are baptized into Christ! You’re clothed with the royal robes of his righteousness! You have the reward of heaven in store for you! No one can take that away!

So pray for those who persecute you. Bless those who curse you. Do good to those who hate you. And love your enemies with Jesus’ love.
