Alfblot..... and all hallows eve
Today is Halloween. Many of you probably celebrate it in its commercial form – trick or treating, wearing costumes and overdosing on candy. Or perhaps you prefer to recognise it as Samhain (the pagan version) instead. But what if I told you that our Heathen? Norse  ancestors marked this holiday too, albeit in their own unique way?....... They called it AlfBlot , ‘Álfblót’ literally translates to ‘elf ritual’.

Oaths and Oath breaking
Join me as I discuss Oaths and modern practices and how we keep them  SAMPLE FEALTY Warrior: "(Lineage) I am Ragnar, son of Ulfgar, grandson of the mighty Snorri of whom many are the songs and stories! (History) I have come from the fight where I alone slew five, furious in the fell play of wound wands! From Skaggerak to Skye my sword is known, and in Skane and among the Skrit-Finns they sing dirge-songs where I've slain their sons! (Future deeds) Greater deeds than these shall I gain, garnering fame like grains of gold! In this war-band shall my wound-wand strike hard against the steel of byrnies, so all hear them sing their sad, dire song, if the guardian of the folk grants me the gift I ask, accepting my oath ay!" Lord: A mighty man in byrnie are you, of proven bravery, bold in battle. Into my war-band will you come, to serve as warrior and counsel wise words? Warrior: Aye! Lord: (Calls for sword, which is kept in the sheath, hilt on the knee pointed toward the arrior with the length of the blade running along his leg, and the point passing between the right arm and the body. The buckle of the sword belt should rest upon the hilt, and the lord should grasp the hilt so that his arm lays on top of the sword along its length.) Speak then your oath! Warrior: (The warrior shall kneel before the king and shall put his right hand under the hilt) I, Ragnar, make this oath: that I shall be in the forefront of fierce battle, forging ahead with my lord and friend, coming to the war-call carrying my weapons; and when no battle causes the war-horn to blow, I shall not forget the ring-giver's generosity, but will offer wise counsel as I may. And though I had liefer lay down my life than see harm come to my lord, still should the poisoned point or aged edge strike him down, then I shall not flee a single footlength from the field, but rather shall advance into the enemy army, slaying as I might, to avenge the protector of the people. And by Freyr, and by Njordr, and the Almighty Ase, may this sword smite me upon which my hand rests, may my own edge twist and turn against me should I fail to keep this oath. (Leans forward and kisses the lord's hand or the sword hilt). Lord: I have heard your oath, as have the holy Aesir. Hear you then my vow to you: with red gold shall I gift you, granting good gifts as you merit, round rings rolling from my hand to yours; among my earls shall you sit in the sumbel, with sweet mead strong filling your stoup; if to the lawcourt you are called, in legal tangles twisted and tied, then I and all of my earls and kin shall stand as oath-helpers if you should need this; and finally, my sword shall stand between you and your enemies, my strength and my war-band beside you boldly, for bare is brotherless back. May Óðinn Allfather, God of Oaths listen, may Freyr and Njörðr witness my words, let Frigga hold me faithful, may Saga keep this oath in memory, and may Thórr, Almighty God hallow this vow! (Lord stands and hands sword to assistant, who in its place gives him an arm-ring or necklace of heavy gold chain, or a sword or other worthy gift, which the Lord gives to his new warrior.) from :

Marriage , Handfasting
what is the difference for heathens , just talking Marriage   Today you are holding the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you, as you promise to love each other forever on your wedding day. These are the hands that will work alongside yours as together you build your future. These are the hands that will passionately love and cherish you through the years and will comfort you like no other. These are the hands that will hold you when fear or grief fills your mind. These are the hands that will wipe tears from your eyes, tears of sorrow and tears of joy. These are the hands that will tenderly hold your children. These are the hands that will help you hold your family together as one. These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it. And these are the hands that – even when wrinkled and aged – will still be reaching for yours and expressing the same tenderness they do today with just a touch.

Preparing for a ritual
Please remember that the following is only an example! Is it right? For some people it is. Is it wrong? For some people it will seem that way. However it is a pretty simple, and good example for beginners.  Blot Procedures: Hallowing: Purpose: To hallow and make holly the area in which the blot is being held. To banish all evil, ill willed spirits, and invite in The Holy Powers that are being invoked  Reading Purpose: To enter a certain mindset.  The Call: Purpose: To get the attention of those being invoked, to invite the in The Holy Powers that you are honoring. To invite them in, to ask them to take part in your celebrations.Face north, and invoke the names of those you wish present.  The Rede: Purpose: Declaration of Purpose. Informing those present, as well as those you are honoring, why you are there.  Loading: Purpose: Declaring what you are giving to The Holy Powers as a sacrifice, and why. Ask them to bestow their blessings upon you.  Drinking: Purpose: To metaphorically take in the blessings of the divine.  Hail the deity(s) Drink. Blessing: Purpose: Another way to accept the blessings of the divine.  Giving: Purpose: A way I which you give your thanks, and your blessings to the Holy Powers. The Gods have put their blessings in the drink, which you have had, thus you put your blessings in the drink and give it to the divine.  Ending : Purpose:To declare that the blot is done.

9 Noble Virtues
what are the 9 noble virtues how do they pertain to us and what are our reasons for following , or not following them  "Nine Noble Virtues" Courage Truth Honour Fidelity Discipline Hospitality Self Reliance Industriousness Perseverance   ome Odinist Values" Strength is better than weakness Courage is better than cowardice Joy is better than guilt Honour is better than dishonour Freedom is better than slavery Kinship is better than alienation Realism is better than dogmatism Vigor is better than lifelessness Ancestry is better than rootlessness   the Nine Charges were codified by the Odinic Rite in the 1970s. To maintain candour and fidelity in love and devotion to the tried friend: though he strike me I will do him no scathe. Never to make wrongsome oath: for great and grim is the reward for the breaking of plighted troth. To deal not hardly with the humble and the lowly. To remember the respect that is due to great age. To suffer no evil to go unremedied and to fight against the enemies of Faith, Folk and Family: my foes I will fight in the field, nor will I stay to be burnt in my house. To succour the friendless but to put no faith in the pledged word of a stranger people. If I hear the fool's word of a drunken man I will strive not: for many a grief and the very death groweth from out such things. To give kind heed to dead people: straw dead, sea dead or sword dead. To abide by the enactments of lawful authority and to bear with courage the decrees of the Norns.

Blot to the Norns
Hail to the Three Wisewomen Of the Well of Fate, Spinner, Weaver, Cutter, Readers of wyrd in the water of the Well. My doom has brought me to this place, Locked into a life I did not choose. I know that there are many reasons Behind my coming here, And some come from choices I made And some did not, But regardless of how much was folly And how much ill luck, I am here now, And this is my Fate. Teach me, O Keepers of my Thread, How to learn well from this turning, How to find the lessons That will stand me in the best stead, For I know that only when I have learned enough Will you weave me free. Hail to Urd, Verdandi, Skuld, Grant me one glance into Urdabrunnr’s depths To show me the right road home.   Invocation Said by the Gothi: Who are the Norns who are helpful in need, And the babe from the mother bring?” Said by the Gythia: Of many births the Norns must be, Nor one in race they were; Some to gods, others to elves are kin, And Dvalin’s daughters some. Said by Both Thence come the maidens mighty in wisdom, Three from the dwelling down ‘neath the tree; Urth is one named, Verthandi the next,– On the wood they scored,– and Skuld the third. Laws they made there, and life allotted To the sons of men, and set their fates. We call upon you, the norns, to celebrate with us during this time. Said by the Gothi: Then gleamed a ray from Logafiöll, and from that ray lightnings issued; then appeared, in the field of air, a helmed band of Valkyriur: their corslets were with blood besprinkled, and from their spears shone beams of light. Said by Gothi: I want Hrist and Mist to bring me a horn, Skeggjöld and Skögul, Hildr and Þrúðr, Hlökk and Herfjötur, Göll and Geirahöð, Randgríð and Ráðgríð and Reginleif. They carry ale to the einherjar. Said by Gythija: She saw valkyries come from far and wide, ready to ride to Goðþjóð. Skuld held a shield, and Skögul was another, Gunnr, Hildr, Göndul and Geirskögul. We call upon you, the Valkyries, to celebrate with us during this time. Toasts Gothi/Gythia pass around horn, each person making their toast. Libation

Thors Blot
The poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote of Thor: "I am the God Thor, I am the War God, I am the Thunderer! Here in my Northland, my fastness and fortress, reign I forever! Here amid icebergs rule I the nations; This is my hammer, Milner the mighty; Giants and sorcerers cannot withstand it!"    Invocation to Thor Hail, Thor, Lord of the Hammer! Lord of the Storm, rumbling chariot That tears across the sky, Lord who speaks plainly And has no time for intrigue And subtle ploys, Protector of the common man, Warrior beloved by farmers, Help us to untwist our tongues And speak the fiery truth Hurled blazing like a hammer-bolt Across the open sky! Song: Hail Thor, Lord of Thunder    nvocation to Thor Said by Gothi/Gythia Great Thunderer, who rides in a chariot drawn by goats, You who guard the bounds of Middle-Earth, who drives the frost giants back to their dark realm, Keeper of oaths, you are there when the man and the maid plight their troth, you are there when the thain swears fealty to the lord, You whose great hammer destroys the foes of mankind and of all life, You touch the earth with swift lightning, and the soil grows fertile, the seed sprouts when the harvest is sown, You whose mighty voice is heard across the sky, protector, defender, whose rune is most mighty to preserve, Hail Thor! Toasts Gothi/Gythia pass around horn, each person making their toast. Libation Said by Gothi/Gythia We give great honor to Thunor! Bane of World Serpent, the one who struggles against the bonds of eternity. You are the one who never abandons, any who call upon your name in time of trouble or crisis. Your strength and hammer might keeps at bay the primal chaotic energies known as Etins, those who envy the goddesses’ and the gods’ immortality. Those beings and creatures who would plunge Midgard into darkness and ice. You are our defender against those who have overstepped their boundaries. Those who give you honor are never abandoned; to call upon your name just once is to dwell in Truthheim, even in this life. Thus we honor Thunor! Hail Thor! by Jim Davis of Missouri

Heathen / Asatru 101
I just touch on Heathenry and Asatru and as a primer   Less than a thousand years ago, the elders of Iceland made a fateful decision. Under political pressure from Christian Europe, and faced with the need for trade, the Allthing declared Iceland to be an officially Christian country. Within a few short centuries the last remnants of Nordic Paganism, which once stretched through all of Northern Europe were thought dead. However, Iceland was a tolerant country and the myths stories, and legends of Pagan times were left unburnt to kindle the fires of belief and time, in later generations. Under pressure, Iceland once again recognized Nordic Paganism as a legitimate and legal religion. A restoration of our ancient faith is likewise in full bloom in the United State of America where we see the migration from the “ normal “ faith to one of the old ways. This ancient Pagan religion was known as Asatru, an old Norse word which means Troth (loyalty) to the Gods, and modern Asatru is nothing less than the complete revival of the ancient Norse Pagan religion as far as we know it to be. when it died out for a time alot of the old ways were lost and we find ourselves studying the books and poetry and stories of the time to revive it as it is and should be.
