Harmony in Healing: The DJ Who Mixed Her Way to a Nutritional Awakening with Sam Lander

Harmony in Healing: The DJ Who Mixed Her Way to a Nutritional Awakening with Sam Lander

Samantha Lander @seefitliving, is a functional diagnostic nutritionist, who shares her remarkable journey from substance abuse to sobriety and healing.
Samantha’s story is one of resilience and redemption. Despite starting her journey with substances as early as 7th grade, she managed to excel athletically and academically, earning a spot on a Division 1 rowing team. However, the allure of the party life on the west coast during her college years led her down a dangerous path of club DJing to using GHB to selling drugs, ultimately resulting in her arrest and incarceration in federal prison.

But Samantha’s story doesn’t end there. It’s a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for growth and transformation. Through her time in prison and the support of others, Samantha found her way to sobriety and embarked on a journey of self-discovery and healing.

What makes Samantha’s journey even more remarkable is her transition into becoming a functional diagnostic nutritionist, specializing in gut health. Drawing from her own experiences and struggles, Samantha has found purpose in helping others heal their bodies and minds.
Throughout the episode, Samantha candidly discusses her setbacks, including a period of drinking after her initial recovery from drugs. However, she emphasizes how she was able to leverage her foundational 13 years of sobriety and resilience to find her way back on track.

Today she helps women, addict or not, regain their health. We are constantly told that our labs are normal yet we are exhausted, bloated, can’t loose weight, horrible gut issues and hormones a mess. This is definitely not normal. She has been in your shoes and found her special functional lab tests gave her the answers she needed to get real results and heal the body.

Delicious Alternatives and The Importance of Nurturance with Vera Thomlison

In today's episode, we're joined by the remarkable Vera, whose journey into sobriety is as compelling as it is inspiring. Growing up in a high-pressure Chinese household, Vera turned to drugs and alcohol as a means to socialize and escape the immense expectation to excel. Her quest for belonging led her to a pivotal moment with her first line of cocaine, chasing a surge of dopamine that felt like a newfound freedom. Yet, it was in the quietude of her room, amidst books and study, that her true path to liberation began to unfold.

Enter the transformative power of Yoga—a practice that not only opened Vera to sobriety but also guided her to discover the art of self-nurturance. Throughout our conversation, Vera shares the essence of replacing the temporary highs of drugs or alcohol with something profoundly "delicious"—a journey of nurturing oneself that's essential for anyone walking the path of recovery.

Vera's down-to-earth nature and her deeply moving story shine a light on the importance of finding joy in healthy alternatives. She has since created a unique coaching program, weaving together meditation and yoga for an all-encompassing experience that leaves her clients exclaiming, "wow, I needed that!"

From Panic to Power: One Woman's Journey Beyond Anxiety and Alcohol with Starlyn Haneman

From Panic to Power: One Woman's Journey Beyond Anxiety and Alcohol with Starlyn Haneman

In an article in the Neurobiology of Stress journal in 2019, researchers found that women are more likely to drink alcohol in an attempt to regulate stress and anxiety. In this episode I speak to one woman who has first hand experience with panic attacks induced by drinking.

Starlyn Haneman is an anxiety freedom coach that helps women rebel against anxiety and take back control of their health and happiness. Over four years ago she realized that alcohol was making her anxious and miserable. She went on a journey of finding healthy and sustainable ways to cope and in the process discovered the key to creating the life she had been dreaming of. She is now on a mission to help other women to do the same so they can live the life they have dreamt of, free of anxiety and full of happiness.

MHJ Part II: 3 Keys to Begin Your Journey Without a Map

Hey folks, in this episode of 'This is Sober,' I'm laying out the messy reality of how my sobriety journey kicked off. No grand plan, just me figuring things out as I went along. Join me as I share the nitty-gritty details, the bumps in the road, and the quiet moments that defined those early days. It's not a heroic tale with triumphant victories – just a real, raw look at navigating the unknown all on my own. Plus, I've got three things I stumbled upon that kinda became my guardrails. No big promises, just sharing what helped me. If you're into the unpolished side of sobriety, come hang out with me and let's chat about the real deal. If you have an interest in a topic for the show, have a question, a comment, or just want to say hi, please do!

MHJ Part I: Where have I been the last 6 months?...and my sobriety milestones

It's been a hot minute since I sat down to record. I've been a little MIA for many reasons. Mostly, though, I zeroed in on my healing jorney (MHJ) through sobriety. This is part one of a series of episodes that is going to walk you through my healing journey, the good, the bad, and the vulnerable. I've decided its time for me to pull back the veil and get as real as anyone can get about their sobriety journey. So pull up a chair, get cozy, and let's be honest with one another about this journey through sobriety.

Redesigning Habits: Insights from the Founder of Oberit, Will House

Redesigning Habits: Insights from the Founder of Oberit, Will House

In this episode, I speak to Will House, the founder and creator of Oberit, an app that has been helping thousands transform their habits into sustainable recovery. From a young age, he was exposed to a party culture where drinking was prevalent, influenced by his environment. In college, the drinking culture intensified, and upon entering the corporate world in London, he embraced a work hard, play hard mentality, leading to excessive alcohol consumption due to the demands of the job and corporate entertainment. Reflecting on this lifestyle, Will recognizes that his beliefs, habits, and behaviors were shaped by years of living in this environment.

Oberit is a rewards-based recovery app that incentivizes long-term mental wellness by helping users build consistent healthy habits, eliminate destructive behaviors, earn digital rewards and unlock exclusive subscriber discounts from brand partners in the in-app marketplace, which supports a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle. Will House is the founder of the Oberit app. Will has years of experience in recovery and founded Oberit to make recovery easier and more rewarding. Before founding Oberit, Will had more than a decade of experience in the tech field.

Nursing with Clarity: Embracing Holistic Health and Sobriety with Christy Sloan

I haven't had many healthcare professionals respond to my request to be interviewed on This is Sober, so I jumped at the chance when this nurse emailed me asking to share her story. I am grateful for her work in the field and her multi-passionate attitude towards helping others overcome their alcohol struggles.

In this episode Christy Sloan shares her story of her struggles with alcohol, how she white knuckled through her first year of sobriety, and how not confronting the underlying issues caused her to return to drinking. After watching her dad pass away from alcohol and smoking-related esophogeal cancer, she knew she needed a change both for herself and her new baby.

Christy Sloan is a BSN, RN, Certified Wellness Coach, Yoga teacher, and currently working towards Board Certification as a Nurse Coach and Holistic Nurse with the Integrative Nurse Coach Academy. As a professional woman in recovery from alcohol abuse, she passionately promotes health and healing with integrative and holistic approaches. She advocates for people to stop asking whether or not they're an alcoholic and instead ask, "Is alcohol serving my life?"

Reframing Relapse: Finding Strength in Sobriety

Reframing Relapse: Finding Strength in Sobriety

In this episode, Molly talks about her experiences with relapse, what those experiences ultimately taught her, and how anyone working through sobriety can utilize relapse incidents as an opportunity to reframe their sobriety.

- Her first relapse happened after over 365 days of consecutive sobriety; she fell victim to the false pretense that after a long enough duration of sobriety she could handle drinking; she learned that owning her story and understanding her 'why' was vital to continuing to not drink

- After seeing her partner of over a year drinking while on a business trip she was overcome with loneliness, lack of trust, and the fear of being on her sober journey all alone; she was able to reframe her sobriety and embrace her story and be firm in knowing yes, this is all about her, and that's ok

- When friends of her threw her a happy hour going away party, Molly was underprepared and allowed fate to run its course, resulting in drinking too much, embarassing herself, and of course the worst hangover she had experienced in a very long time; she learned that social settings require a bit of forethought and planning and that it is ok to say 'no'

Breaking Free: Rediscovering Yourself After Addiction with Al Richards

Breaking Free: Rediscovering Yourself After Addiction with Al Richards

When Al reached out to me, I wanted to learn more about him before our interview. I scoured his podcast, other podcasts he had been on and came up very short. I realized Al hasn't publicly spoke much about his addiction and I was determined to change that. Ironically enough, Al had that exact thought when he came on my show. And for one of the first times, he shares his story.

Al Richards is a true inspiration to those who have faced addiction and are seeking a way to overcome it. After battling a weekend alcohol and cocaine addiction for eight years, Al lost his job of 24 years as a result. But instead of giving up, he turned his life around and spent the next 14 years working tirelessly on himself and helping others understand addiction. In March of 2021, he started The Other Side of Addiction Podcast, which has quickly become a space for open and honest dialogue about addiction and recovery. And just this past February, Al started the ARC/Addiction Resource Collective Networking group, in an effort to connect people with the resources and support they need to overcome addiction. Al believes that it's time to lift each other up, and he is leading the way with his powerful message of hope and healing.

Bottled Up: The Devastating Effects of Underestimating Alcohol Addiction

Bottled Up: The Devastating Effects of Underestimating Alcohol Addiction

This episode focuses on what to do and what not to do when a loved one comes to you saying they need help with their drinking.

Too often, when someone very close suggests they have a problem with their drinking, the recipient undermines their opinion and underestimates their request for help.

Imagine being on the giving end of such a request, you've been battling for days, weeks, even years trying to overcome your drinking and the person you trust most tells you 'you're not that bad'.

The truth is, this answer can lead to devastating results and the person asking for help should ALWAYS be taken seriously.

When I finally reached out to help, it was my mother who never questioned the seriousness and took immediate action to help, something that likely saved my life.

If you know someone who has asked for help, remember, their admission is NOT about you.

How do you deal with all the emotions after you get sober?

How do you deal with all the emotions after you get sober?

In this solo-cast, Molly talks about how our society is obsessed with blocking emotions.

From overscheduling, overworking, online shopping, social media, and drinking.

She talks about some techniques you can use to 'lean into' the emotions that come up after you quit drinking.

She advises that learning healthy strategies for the myriad of emotions that come up after you quit drinking takes time.

You have to practice different techniques that work for you and work through them until they become much more bearable.

These changes don't happen overnight.

Remember, when we drink to numb the bad, we are also numbing the good.

Molly's go-to mood altering strategies include meditation and music.
