Therapists After Work: Relationships with Therapists, a Discussion With LPC Chris
Felipe Blue, LCAS, CSI and LPC Chris discuss therapists in relationships, the good, the bad, and the super ugly. If you’ve been asked out by a therapist, don’t run away just because you assume you’ll be overanalyzed and judged on your date. Therapists can be great romantic partners. Give therapy a chance. Fifteen reasons to date a therapist: 1. Therapists are great listeners, and intentionally do so without judgement. 2. Therapists keep secrets. If you’re looking for someone trustworthy, a therapist is trained in confidentiality. 3. Therapists offer good advice and can help you make wise choices if you’re looking for input into a difficult situation. 4. A lot of people are in therapy. If your date is good at what he/she does, he/she has job security. 6. Therapists are acutely aware of emotional needs and the human condition. It’s safe to be vulnerable around them. 7. Therapists want to see positive change take place and are proactive when it comes to problem-solving. 8. Therapists are good communicators. Not only do they listen well, they help people acknowledge their own weaknesses and make healthy decisions. Game-playing and cryptic comments won’t help clients, so neither are part of their communication arsenal. 9. Therapists might seem like intimidating dates, but they aren’t holier-than-thou. Rather, therapists are aware of their own weaknesses, insecurities and shortcomings. You’ll soon realize that your therapist significant other could be just as confused as you are at times. 10. Therapists are safe and consistent. When other people have crises, they call your date for wisdom, stability and security. Others trust that he/she will be there for them even when they make poor choices or little progress. 11. Therapists are interesting. Instead of small talk about the weather, your date can offer interesting facts and tidbits about human behavior. Even while keeping cases confidential, therapists still have plenty of entertaining stories to share. 12. Therapists are available to those who need them. Your date will understand that in certain situations, it’s important to always be available. While this may be annoying for therapists’ partners, it’s encouraging to know that your therapist date is prepared to drop everything for you when times get tough. 13. Therapists are emotionally strong. They help clients process heartbreaking stories all the time. If you need a shoulder to cry on, your partner will be capable of sharing the burden. What would be your reason to date a therapist? LPC Chris or Christal Pennic is licensed professional counselor working with youth victims of crimes. She also has two podcasts #Getneckidtherapist and “Surviving Sibling Loss-The Forgotten Mourner’s Podcast” Felipe Blue, MA, LCAS is a former CRIP and has transitioned to a COUNSELOR and comes from a truly genuine, empathetic, and nonjudgmental stance when working with the crisis and trauma related case load he serves in the Durham, NC and surrounding areas. Get to Know Dream Guide and Author, Carolina Fonseca Jimenez
Carolina Fonseca Jimenez Books: Lupita and her Magical Dreams Lupita and the Magic of Mexico BIO: I was brought to the United States at the age of 2 years old. We came here in search of a better life and in hopes of achieving the American Dream. I grew up in the public- school system, went to East Carolina University to study Psychology and then to Central Law School. At the end of my studies, the most important thing I learned was that our Latino culture and family needed to be celebrated. I realized that I needed to reconnect and unite with myself and with my family in a way that celebrated and united our two cultures, so I began to learn more about myself and used my dreams to guide me. The process of using my dreams to guide my life led me to writing my first children’s book, Lupita and the Magic of Mexico. My passion for writing and uniting families through my book filled me with the determination to write my second book, Lupita and her Magical Dreams! This book features the significant role dreams play in our lives at an early age. In writing these books I learned that love has no borders and that stories can unite us in a magical way. My passion is to inspire those around me by my example and my mission is to provide guidance in the art of Dream Interpretation.  Book Information Lupita and the Magic of Mexico After growing up in the United States, Lupita finally has the opportunity to explore her birthplace of Mexico with her mother, Ma. Lupita and Ma go on an adventure to learn about the beauty Mexico has to offer. Along the way, they see the culture of Mexico as they explore a parade, the music, and even a castle! Lupita and Ma journey across their home city and find that the magic they were looking for may not be tied to one place at all! Lupita and her Magical Dreams Have you ever woken up terrified from a scary dream? Lupita has, and she's determined to find out what it means! Join Lupita as she explores the meaning of her scary dream. Her journey begins in bed and before you know it, she is flying through the universe! How you ask? Let's join Lupita on her journey as we are invited into her Magical Dream World! Additional Notes: These books are available in English and in Spanish and offer Highlights of the other language for a spark of learning! https://www.lupitainspires.com/ Interview by Jessica Salazar

Therapy Talk: What if You Do Not Like a Client (with Aquanda Green, LCAS-A & Felipe Blue, LCAS, CSI)
Aquanda Green, LCAS-A and Felipe Blue, LCAS, CSI discuss when a clinician experiences "dislike" for a client. Since dislike of a client is not an ethical reason for referring or terminating, here are some tips for when you do not like, are annoyed by, or dread sessions with a client. To start,   redefine how you view clients. Look for   the positive. Practice empathy, compassion, and radical acceptance. During the first few sessions, ask the client about previous experiences in therapy, including what they liked or did not like, and what worked well for them. Remain patient and open-minded. Recognize transference and countertransference. If you feel emotionally drained or exhausted by a certain client, set a boundary. Recognize when the client is bullying, intimidating, insulting, dismissing, etc. If you are unsure of exactly why you are dreading a certain client or session, delve deep. If, on the other hand, you find that you are dreading all sessions, you might be burnt out or experiencing vicarious trauma. Learn from the “unlikeable” client. Recognize and ditch resentments. If you find a nervous habit or tic (outside of transient tic disorder) bothersome, consider pointing it out to the client (in a non-judgmental way), especially if you have a good rapport with or know the client well.

Thought: ACCEPTANCE
Felipe Blue, LCAS, CSI discusses acceptance (finding himself reflecting on this skill/concept) at More Than Therapy located at 201 W Main Street  Suite 316 Durham, NC 27701. Whenever life gets tough, there is a natural tendency to want to avoid it. Practicing acceptance helps reduce stress and fear. You can learn how to cope with just about anything - as long as you know how.  Fear plays a big factor here. You might pray that the problem goes away without having to do anything. Or, you spend too much time trying to create a certain outcome.  It makes me thinking of that saying "What you resist persists." Avoiding something it doesn't make it go away, instead the thing you’re trying to avoid just lingers. You start worrying about the "what ifs" rather than living in today.  Resisting takes up a lot of energy. The more you worry the less serenity you will have. In this blog you’ll learn how practicing acceptance can ease your anxiety in any situation. What is acceptance?  Practicing+Acceptance+Blog+for+Recovery+and+Relationships.png Acceptance means facing reality as it is without trying to change or control it.  This takes continued effort and patience. It’s more of a practice than something you achieve immediately.  Practicing acceptance decreases negative thoughts and worry. When we stop fighting what’s happening we can learn to embrace it. Practicing Acceptance  When something challenging happens, don't assume a negative outcome. Nothing has actually happened yet.  Letting go is hard for most of us. Even the thought of having to let go of someone or something precious to us often triggers fear. Fear is False Evidence Appearing Real which means what you fear rarely happens!  Instead, focus on staying present in the moment. Bring your thoughts back to what's really happening not what you’re worrying about. Being in the moment is a quick way to get a reality check - which can lessen anxious thoughts. #DBT #DialecticalBehavioralTherapy #Acceptance #Mindfulness #SheDontLoveMeAnymore T-Shirt in poster sold by Therapy Is Light. Dr. Tracey Phillips Discusses "From Counseling to Coaching" 🌹
Felipe Blue, LCAS, CSI has a discussion with his former professor, mentor, and long time friend, Dr. Tracey Phillips regarding counselors transitioning to coaching. In order to ethically offer coaching as a licensed therapist, you must: Treat coaching clients as therapy clients, and abide by all state laws and rules governing your license, including but not limited to mandated reporting, dual relationships, and record keeping.  Offer coaching under a business separate from your therapy business.  Educate clients and potential clients about the limits of coaching as a service, and how you will proceed if it becomes clear that they need therapy.  Additional considerations:  Whether you want to become a coach as your sole profession, or offer coaching services in addition to therapy. Your coaching qualifications. Your coaching niche and scope of practice. Whether or not you need to start a new, separate business. The laws and rules of your state regarding your professional license. The relevance of your profession’s ethical code in regards to coaching (you can consult your national professional association for free legal advice). The need for specific and separate client contracts and paperwork. Defining the boundary between therapy and coaching for yourself and clients. Developing a policy for identifying therapy needs as well as referral procedures. Separate and/or additional liability insurance.   Connect and learn more about Dr. Tracey Phillips at:   http://linkedin.com/in/dr-tracey-m-phillips-64654b6   Writevision.net  https://www.facebook.com/Writevision-Consulting-LLC-373190306175919/

Thought: Love to Receive Love
Love is our deepest longing. Just as the body needs food the soul needs love--it is nourishment, spiritual nourishment. Without the food, air, and water, the body will deteriorate; without love the soul starts shrinking. And everybody is living with a very small soul for the simple reason that they have not loved. And why have they not loved? If you inquire into the question you will be surprised, because for the whole of their life everybody is trying to get love. But people are trying to get, not to give, and the law of love is that you get only when you give. Giving comes first, getting is only a consequence.  - Osho - ❤ How often do you nourish your soul? Is it easy for you to give and receive love? How easy is it to stay focused on all our needs--physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual? 🎈 Today's episode sponsored by Pod Decks. She Said/He Said (with Sin & Blue) 6lack Women & Their Mental Health Issues
Sin and her compadres Blue, Tone, and Deb of the LOOSE LIPS podcast as they discuss women and the impact of mental health on them during this time. A recent study showed that: one in five women compared to one in eight men had a mental health problem there was a steady increase in the number of women experiencing mental health difficulties, with young women particularly at risk one in five women aged 16-25 reported recently self-harming suicide rates in women were at their highest for a decade. In addition, rates of suicide and self-harm were higher for women in minority ethnic communities compared to other women. What affects women’s mental health? There are a number of factors affecting women’s mental health. Women are more likely to be the main carer for their children than men, and may care for older or disabled relatives too. Women carers are more likely to experience anxiety and depression than other women. Women are more likely to live in poverty than men. Poverty, working mainly in the home and concerns about personal safety can all make women feel isolated. Social isolation is linked to mental health problems. Physical and sexual abuse can have a long-term impact on women’s mental health, especially if they haven’t received any support. Women are exposed to more sexual violence than men, which means more women are affected by PTSD. -- This episode brought to you by Pod Decks, decks of cards that give you the best interview options. Interview with John Giordani - From $300 to 45 Million in Addictions Recovery (and so much more)
It was by no accident that John Giordano chose addiction treatment as his life’s work. Growing up the son of a heroin dealer and trying to cope with the trauma of being molested as a young boy, he fell hard into drugs and alcohol. Over thirty-five years ago, at the urging of his family, John entered rehab. He emerged a changed man - committed to helping others afflicted by this terrible disease. His new path required new knowledge. He has since earned many degrees and certifications including Certified Addiction Professional (CAP), Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), Certified Hypnotherapist, Certified Criminal Justice Specialist, Master in Neurolinguistics Programming, Certified Practitioner of E.M.D.R, Certified Sentence Mitigation Specialist, Certified Mindfulness and Powerful Mind-Body Awareness Therapy Skills, International Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor, and in 2008 he was honored with a Doctor of Human Letters from Sinai University in Jerusalem Israel. As he began his career in addiction treatment he became increasingly dissatisfied with the quality of care he observed in treatment facilities. John decided to set out on his own and with only $300 he opened an addiction treatment facility that evolved into the highly awarded G & G Holistic Addiction Treatment in North Miami Beach, Florida which eventually sold for $45,000,000. John has authored two books “How To Beat Your Addictions And Live A Quality Life", “Proven Holistic Treatment For Addiction & Chronic Relapse” and was a contributing author for ‘Molecular Neurobiology of Addiction Recovery: The 12 Steps Program and Fellowship’. with the esteemed Dr. Blum and Dr. Gold. He has also contributed to over 73 scientific research papers. Research Gate ranks him as one of the top researchers in the world. John’s achievements have not gone unnoticed; he is one of the media’s most sought after addiction expert. Mr. Giordano has appeared on countless notable national and local TV programs such as CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, FOX Mornings with Mike and Juliet, Tom Brokaw NBC News, ABC News, CNN Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch, Geraldo, and “Interventions” on A&E as well as many other national and local TV and radio shows. Giving back to his community has always been the core principle of Mr. Giordano’s. His efforts to better his community have also been recognized. Florida State Congresswoman Carrie Meek presented Mr. Giordano with the distinguished “Martin Luther King Award” for his work in the community. He was also awarded the Certificate of Appreciation from the Homeless Community of Dade County and the Humanitarian Award from South Florida Public Television Station, WPBT. In addition to his daily responsibilities; John has provided counseling and trauma recovery services to law enforcement officers and Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. He is a state and federal expert witness and also the Chaplain of the North Miami Police Department. As a 10th-degree black belt and National Karate Champion, he also trains law enforcement officers and Green Berets in self-defense and negotiation techniques. - interview by Felipe Blue, MA, LCAS, CSI of More Than Therapy, a program of FAEJ Foundation in Durham, NC.

Interview With Ashley Gilmore Regarding "Superwoman Schema Impacting Black & Brown Women"
Felipe Blue, MA, LCAS interviews Ashley Gilmore of Gilmore Counseling about her upbringing, her therapeutic approach, and her views of Black women being "Superwomen" and how this may be detrimental to their wellness and recovery.   While Black women, women of color and women in general are increasingly visible in leadership roles across many professions, in academia, business, medicine, and law, real gains in high level leadership roles and economic parity remain illusive and fragile.  There remains a dearth of women in educational leadership positions. For example, while women comprise 80% of the teaching force, less than 30% of educational leaders are women--13% of these are Blacks, 6.5% are Latino, and 3% are Asian.    www.gilmorecounseling.com  www.morethantherapy.org #BlackWoman #BlackTherapists #BlackTherapistsRock #LCMHC #MoreThanTherapy #Recovery #Wellness #DoBetter

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may be stressful for people. Fear and anxiety about a new disease and what could happen can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in adults and children. Public health actions, such as social distancing, can make people feel isolated and lonely and can increase stress and anxiety. However, these actions are necessary to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Coping with stress in a healthy way will make you, the people you care about, and your community stronger. Sex During the Pandemic with Jerry Wright
Sex During the Coronavirus Pandemic: What's Safe, and What Experts Don't Want You to Do The distinction matters, because safe sex during the pandemic depends on your current relationship situation and, well, why you're having sex in the first place. If you were to conceive a baby while one partner had COVID-19 (remember, people can be asymptomatic, so you may not know if you have it), it does not appear that the virus is transmitted via sperm or eggs, so the resulting embryo shouldn't be affected, says Dr. Surrey. Interview with Aubrea Ageda, a Social Worker in Durham and Chapel Hill, NC Regarding the Impact of Grief
F. Khristopher Blue of More Than Therapy interviews Aubrea Ageda, a social worker in Durham, Wake, and Franklin County, NC discuss the impact of grief, a focus more recently due to the tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and seven others. The 7 Stages of Grief Shock and Denial When someone first brings you that bad news, it can be difficult to believe. You want to just shake your head and say, "no way." You may start to feel numb. The shock and disbelief are actually suspending your pain, and this may last for several weeks. This doesn't mean the loss didn't impact you. It's simply the first stage in the grief process. Pain and Guilt Once your shock starts to fade, you'll notice the pain. This is when it first starts to hit you that your loss is real. The pain may be extremely difficult to handle, and it may feel physical as well as emotional. You may even start to feel guilty about something you could or should have done for the person (even if it's illogical). Anger and Bargaining Next, many people feel angry. You may feel angry with your religion, with someone who was taking care of that person, with the person responsible, or the person themselves. It may be completely unreasonable who you feel angry with, but you seek out someone you can blame for the loss. You may even attempt to bargain to bring that person back. Depression, Reflection, and Loneliness Depression, reflection, and loneliness usually come later. When many of your family or friends are starting to overcome their suffering or starting to think you should be overcoming your own suffering, you may feel depressed. It can hit even harder than the initial pain, because you're truly coming to terms with the loss. You're not feeling the pain as much as feeling the change to your life. Maybe you've lost someone you spent a lot of time with or the person you always told secrets to. This material loss can cause depression, reflection on the way things were, and loneliness as you realize those times are gone. The Turn Finally, just when you think there can't possibly be anything good coming ever again, you'll start to feel a little better each day. It may be so slight that you don't even realize it at first, and you won't feel happy all at once. What you may feel is a little less pain, a little less sadness, and more of being okay. Reconstruction and Working Through This is where you'll start to work your way through the aftermath of losing that loved one. Maybe you have to take care of some financial troubles either caused by the loss or the grief. Maybe you need to just put yourself back together. This is the stage where it all begins. Acceptance The final stage is the one you'll be in for the rest of your life: you start to accept the loss fully and begin to move on with your life. That's not to say you ever "get over it," but that you start to feel okay. You're able to think and talk about your loss without feeling the despair or intense pain. It may make you sad to think about, but it may also make you happy, because now you can remember the good times.

Thought: Living Through Difficulties
When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds and diamonds are made under pressure.  Quote by Peter Marshall -- During some periods of our lives, the difficulties that we face can seem insurmountable. And during these times, it is easy for us to "long for life without difficulties." However, as Peter points out, the hardships that we face are what strengthen us, define us, and help us to grow into the person we were meant to become. Like a sapling, we begin a bit frail, in need of nourishment. As a young boy, I needed the support of my parents and those around me to help me through difficulties that lay before me. However, over time, the hardships in my life began to strengthen me, they allowed me to grow strong roots that helped me to rise up above those difficulties. And so it is that the things that test us in life, serve to make us stronger, just as the oak trees that we see outside. And similarly, the beauty we find in diamonds could not be seen, if not for the incomprehensible amount of pressure involved. Our inner beauty, like diamonds, is forged in the furnaces of adversity, tempered by the hammer of trials and obstacles, and molded by our own triumph over those very difficulties that perhaps we once feared. There is sure to be difficulties in our lives. If we accept this fact, the hardships will be fewer and less intense, for acceptance of difficulties allows us to relate to them in a much more positive way. Today's Challenge: Find acceptance and growth in the difficulties you face. Questions to consider: How do you see difficulties in your life? Do you accept them as learning or teaching situations or wish they would go away? Have you grown more as a person when dealing with difficulties or when life has been flowing smoothly? For further thought: Sometimes things which at the moment may be perceived as obstacles--and actually be obstacles, difficulties, or drawbacks--can in the long run result in some good end which would not have occurred if it had not been for the obstacle.  Quote by Steve Allen www.morethantherapy.org Recorded on 1/1/2020

EDUCATING OUR YOUTH... EDUCATE YOUR YOUTH
There’s so much talk about education, or the lack thereof that our kids are receiving from our public schools. I myself have spoken on the subject and while I feel that there is definite need for change in that space, another area is being neglected as well. Parents seem to have forgotten that part of their job is to educate their children on the issues that aren’t covered in school and that are also of particular relevance for people of African descent. Our heritage is one strong in the oral tradition that teaches not only our history but important life lessons and I say it’s time we remembered that. So here’s my list of things that every Black child should be taught by their parents: 1. Respect and reverence for their elders 2. How to save and invest money 3. Manners and etiquette (this includes conflict resolution) 4. Entrepreneurship 5. Black Pride/Ancestry (sorely lacking here, I’ll save further thoughts on this topic for another post) 6. How to be responsible and keep your word

THOUGHT: A Man is But the Product of His Thoughts.
F. Khristopher Blue of www.misterblue.net discusses how your thoughts yield your feelings and behaviors/actions. Today's Quotation: A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes. Mahatma Gandhi Today's Meditation: Our thoughts ultimately shape who we are and what we become in life. This idea might be frightening to some; after all, no one really wants to accept the blame for bad and negative in their life. But if we look at it in a way that enables us to define our destiny, then we become empowered. We recognize that we have the ability to accomplish whatever we want to in life--that we are not defined by our age, our job, or our past, and see that we will not be able to better ourselves through any special works, acts, or deeds. We become whomever it is that we wish to become... plain and simple. Several years ago, I was at a retreat in which every morning I was tasked to write down a wish, a prayer, or desire on a piece of paper and then carry it in my

They Cheated... Now What?
As a relationship counselor, I am often asked "why did my partner Cheat"? Often an affair is a symptom. A spouse cheats because there is vulnerability, either in your partner or in your relationship. Problems can occur if your relationship has become dry, if you are not interacting with each other, if the sex life is nil or there's been some changes were a lot of their attention is going outside of the relationship.your partner may be hungry, and seeking to fill the hunger through other means. Whether it be through cybersex, through a motional intimacy with coworkers are through having an affair. To get to the heart of the reason for the infidelity, consider cheating to be the symptom and not the illness.

The Power of SEX! 🤷🏾‍♂️
Most men have no idea what the true power of sex. Most of us use orgasm as a means to nearly release tension in the body, to get out of the heads of ourselves for a few minutes and relax our restless brains. We often use women, porn, or other men to distract ourselves from the deep, unfulfilled long inside our hearts that we have fully surrendered to love. Most men have battled with sexuality and with the shame and the disorientation that runs rampant through this modern world.

Money, Power, and Respect 👨🏾‍💻Which Do You Have? 💰
\ud83d\udc68\ud83c\udffe\u200d\ud83d\udcbb Socioeconomic status (SES) is an economic and sociological combined total measure of a person's work experience and of an individual's or family\u2019s economic and social position relative to others, based on income, education, and occupation. When analyzing a family\u2019s SES, the household income earners' education and occupation are examined, as well as combined income, versus with an individual, when their own attributes are assessed. Socioeconomic status is typically broken into three categories, high SES, middle SES, and low SES to describe the three areas a family or an individual may fall into.
