A place to inspire and inform mothers from any stage, and to chat about the trials and tribulations of moving your body after having your kids. I'll be speaking to coaches, instructors, and trainers plus athletes and adventurers who all work with mothers in some way and also happen to be mothers themselves. This isn't about perfection, standards or achieving, this is a conversation about how to make the best of the rest of our lives through a nourishing relationship with our bodies and minds.
In this brilliant episode I chat with Baz Moffat, a London based PT and Dr Bella Smith, AKA The Digital GP, who are working together to forge a path to inspire and educate women on all matters around the menopause.
We talk about the facts around peri-menopause and menopause, the different options for helping minimise symptoms and what the change in hormones means to our adaptations with exercise.
Baz and Bella are so knowledgeable, so passionate and brilliantly informative on all things hormonal in this crucial phase of life. If all women go through the menopause and will probably spend longer on the other side of menopause than in all the years from cycles starting to menopause then we all owe it to ourselves, our families and friends to gain more knowledge and appreciation for how effective and awesome we can be.

In this week’s episode I get to chat to one of my heroes in sports science, Dr Emma Ross, who is the Co-Head of Physiology at the English Institute of Sport and the lead for a new campaign they are running called SmartHER which is all about enhancing an athlete’s physiology through an awareness and improved understanding of female specific factors - namely hormones!

In this week’s episode I had the great pleasure of a long chat with Dr Angela White, a woman who has a lifetime of experience in her work as an orthopaedic surgeon in the NHS, a data analyst and health communication in recent years. She also has a lifetime of experience as a person who didn’t move much, came to a tricky time in life with her teenage children, an overload of work, ill husband and relatives and a realisation that she was unfit and inactive knowing exactly where that would lead in the end. So she decided to make small changes to her life over a number of years to improve how she felt and realised this was something that needed to be talked about more especially in the older populations.
We discuss those small changes, how change doesn’t need to be complex or massive life shifts, how preparation for a healthy older life starts in our 20s and 30s and Angela’s mission to provide a platform of information and advice to those growing old in a healthy body. Oh and she holds the record for the oldest woman to run from John O’Groats to Lands End (18 days and a bit!) so we chat about that.

This week I chatted to Tori James who has led a life filled with adventure and many more to come I’m sure. After being inducted in the adventure world when working at the Royal Geographical Society, Tori became the youngest woman (at the time) and the first Welsh woman to climb Everest in 2007.

In this episode I spoke with Annie Broadbent who is a psychosynthesis therapist and the author of the book “Speaking of Death” and now the founder of a platform intended to support mothers who are finding the conversation around motherhood all too positive and sugar coated and who don’t identify the insta-perfect image with their own experience.
Whilst this isn’t directly related to movement, my own experience of mental health challenges post 2nd baby meant I had a skewed relationship with my body, my sense of worth and my motivation, and I found that my mental stability directly related to how and why I moved.

This week is National Fertility Awareness week in the UK and in recognition of that I wanted to put out this double episode of a long conversation I had with Jessica Hepburn. Jessica Hepburn is the author of 2 books: The Pursuit of Motherhood and 21 Miles: Swimming in Search of the Meaning of Motherhood. Jessica is also the founder, in 2016, of Fertility Fest, the world's first arts festival dedicated to fertility, infertility, modern families and the science of making babies, having previously held the role of Executive Director at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith.
Jessica is an extraordinary woman for many reasons, she went through 11 rounds of ultimately unsuccessful IVF over 9 years and then decided to swim the English Channel and is now training to make an attempt to climb Everest. Jessica’s book “21 Miles” made me realise that we need to have a broader conversation of what motherhood means and that I want to be part of a more responsible, diverse and inclusive message.

Ultimately this is a conversation not just about how awesome Sally is - although she undoubtedly is - but actually how traumatic situations can help us grow, the lessons we can learn from failing, how sometimes we do totally the wrong thing and why it’s OK to talk about it so it doesn’t chew us up inside. Sally is clearly highly self motivated with a great sense of humour and has learnt a lot from her experiences so it was great to hear her stories and receive some of that experience.

This week I spoke to Alex Feechan, CEO and Founder of Findra an outdoor clothing company based in Scotland. Originally a knitwear designer with a love of mountain biking, Alex realised the clothing on offer to female mountain bikers was woefully inadequate and insulting, the “pink it and shrink it” method just didn’t cut it. So Alex decided to do something about it and designed her own range of merino clothing which was flattering, functional and not pink!

Carrying on from the last week’s episode in this mini series discussing the clothing options available to women taking part in sport and the barriers women may face due to clothing, I am chatting this week to Yvonne Brady who is the Founder of EVB Sport, a company that makes support shorts and leggings to help women who may be experiencing symptoms of incontinence, pelvic floor weakness, and prolapse. This was born out of Yvonne’s personal experience with pelvic floor dysfunction following the birth of her 3rd baby and her decision to start running pretty soon after.
As with Rosie Cook in last week’s episode and Alex Feechan in next week’s episode, here is another example of a woman seeing a problem that only women face, seeing that there aren’t any good options out there for helping solve this and going out and doing something about it.
This is an interesting alternative perspective, I hope you’ll find really relevant to the discussion around women’s participation in all types of movement. If we’re ashamed of our bodies because we perceive they have let us down because we haven’t heard an open discussion about it, then I believe that contributes to women stopping getting involved or continuing participation in sport. As Yvonne says in this chat, it’s not a body failure, it’s just mechanics, let’s get the support, both physically and mentally to get stronger and we’ll be unstoppable!

In this week’s episode I’m really happy to be talking to the lovely and totally inspiring ultra runner and multi-sector businesswoman, Sophie Power. Sophie has become something of a poster girl for breastfeeding athletes everywhere after a photo was released of her breastfeeding her 3 month old baby and pumping at the same time at one of the aid stations during the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. It provoked a huge conversation about female athletes wanting to provide for their kids and fulfil their needs as well and why there wasn’t more support for women and what could be done by the sport and others to make an image like this less of a spectacle.

I’m super happy to round off this 2nd season of the podcast with a brilliant double episode with the women from “Yorkshire Rows” - Helen Butters, Frances Davies, Janette Benaddi, Niki Doeg - a team of formidable working mums who “dared to dream”.
In rowing the Atlantic and setting a world record for the oldest women to row any ocean they set out to put more challenge and adventure in their own lives and make some incredible and unique memories to look back on, but at the same time they knew that by challenging themselves with this particular adventure they would inspire women and men from all over to find their own ocean and dare to dream too.

This week’s episode is a sit down with the lovely ladies from Girls Alive, a women’s group in Surrey who encourage those who can to run, bike, swim, hike, whatever gets you going and set challenges, encouraging beginners or really going for the big leagues if you feel the urge. I wanted to chat to them so that we can all hear a conversation amongst other women just like you and me about what motivates and drives them, why taking part in a group is so important, and how “daring to give it a go” is what it’s all about.
I talk at the beginning to Eleanor and Philippa at the beginning and then to various of the other women from the group in the following section. We are in a cafe, having coffee and eating so apologies for the general hubbub noise and the plates clinking etc, I’ve tried my best with the sound to make it as clear as possible but I’m no sound engineer so you’ll have to let me off a bit!

This week I chat to Misba Khan who was the UK representative on the all-female Euro-Arabian expedition to the North Pole in April this year which had a mission to foster greater understanding between women from 11 European and Arabic countries.
The wider mission was to inspire all women to reach beyond the expectation of others and fulfil their own life ambitions.
Misba has certainly embodied those mission points, having been the oldest woman on the trip, the only Grandmother and a relative novice when it came to skiing and setting up camp and ended up leading the group on some days, feeding her tent mates each day and becoming the first British Muslim woman to reach the North Pole, plus since she’s returned she has spoken to many, many school children inspiring them and igniting a spark of adventure to those who may think this isn’t within their reach.
Take a listen to hear us talking about how teamwork amongst her family was crucial to her being able to take a step out of daily life, what she got from rambling and loving the outdoors.

In this first episode of the Mother of All Movement podcast, I'm excited to share with you this chat I had with Jess Adams, Bristol based yoga teacher, doula and dance teacher plus lifelong movement experimenter.
I'm sure you'll agree that her integrity with how movement fits her life is very inspiring, and listening to how movement in many different ways has shaped events in her life has given her a really interesting outlook.
