5 Ways to Motivate Yourself

5 Ways to Motivate Yourself

Motivation can be broadly interpreted, and we can apply different hints and techniques to challenge and motivate ourselves. But sometimes it can be hard to find motivation when you need it. Here are five ways to motivate and improve yourself.

1: Set Big, Lofty Goals That Excite You

As humans, we like to find things to be excited about, and this is a great way to get motivation. Choose goals that interest you and will drive you to complete them. However, don’t go so big that you lose motivation. Setting small goals that excite you and you can attain are sure to give you motivation you need to cross those off your to do list.

2: Break Your Goal Down into Smaller Steps

With big tasks, it can be difficult to find a way to stay motivated to finish. You can’t do everything at once, and you don’t want the task to feel so overwhelming that you can’t get started. The simplest way to get started is to break what you need to do into smaller steps. Spread it out over a few hours or days until the project is completed.

Use this technique by writing the big task down, and then write the smaller steps you need to take to complete below it. Focus on the small task at hand, complete it, cross it off the list, and stay focused until completed.

3: Clean Up and Tidy Your Spaces

If your space is messy and hasn’t been cleaned in a while, you can easily lose your motivation. The environment you work in and live in can enhance your motivation. If your workspace is messy, it may impact your focus and reduce your productivity. A clean and tidy workspace may also provide health benefits as well.

4: Work With Friends and Family

When you need to motivate yourself, it can be a challenge to set your goals alone. Sharing your goals with friends and family can help identify tasks you might miss, and help you order them for success. Once underway, communicating with them on progress can keep you on track for completion. Another benefit is the good feeling you get sharing your success.

5: Remember Your Successes

When you’re not motivated for the next task, it can be difficult to move past that feeling. Remember that all your past successes can help you overcome that feeling and motivate you to move on. Every small win is a success and can motivate you to keep going.

With these tips, you’re on your way to improving your motivation and being successful. Join us for more motivation tips!

How to Find Your Best Ideas & Motivation (Outside the Shower! 😂 )

How to Find Your Best Ideas & Motivation (Outside the Shower! 😂 )

Ever get some of your best ideas when you're in the shower? Why is that?

Partially because your brain is on autopilot! Once you've developed a pattern of behaviors your mind recognizes it and builds it into your brain as a shortcut - a habit. This way showering takes very little effort, leaving your mind to be able to wander.

Secondly, because there are fewer distractions!

No cell phones, no text messages, notifications, tv shows, computers - or even CLOTHES to distract us! Often this is the one and only time during our waking hours that we are without distraction to this level.

But how can we create an inspiring atmosphere, where we can find our deepest inspirations, best ideas and stoke our motivation outside the shower?

1. Turn off distractions. You may not even realize what your mind is putting mental energy toward until it is gone. Turn notifications off your phone, or better yet, put it away, or turn it off completely. Get away from your computer. If you can, get away from all clocks, electronics and distracting noises like household appliances. Each of these sounds can be a reminder that it's time to 'get a new filter for the ice maker' or 'almost time to move the wash to the dryer'.

2. Have a Specific Goal in Mind. What do you want to accomplish in this set time? Do you want to get more motivated for your day? Inspired to work on an upcoming goal? Get specific!

3. Write Down Your Thoughts/Plans. When you have to make your thoughts concrete, it forces you to think about them a bit deeper. Journal what you want to accomplish today, tomorrow, this week or this month. Journal about what is currently keeping you from achieving these things and how you can stop that from happening.

If you're having trouble getting started on journaling, be sure to keep an eye out for our upcoming Compass Books! We include 30 Journal Prompts in every Motivational Planner to help you sit down, think through the answers to simple and motivating questions, and define for yourself the problems, the solutions and the next steps!

Tune in now for more thoughts and ideas on this subject!

What to Take Away from Failure and Stories (and what NOT to!)

Using Comparison to Reach Your Goals

Using Comparison to Reach Your Goals

Do you find yourself getting disproportionately jealous, frustrated or angry by someone else's social media feeds or by the picture perfect lifestyles you see represented in media?

If so, maybe it's time to look inward to understand why you are reflecting so many emotions outward.

So, while on one hand it's a good idea to say 'don't compare to others'!

You're human. It's what we do. You're going to do it. But when you do compare, how can do so in a way that is productive and supports reaching your goals?

So instead, when you compare....first:

  • Keep in mind that's not the whole story - and that's ok!
  • Keep in mind you probably don't even care to see the whole story, right?!
  • Try to identify the emotions you are feeling.
  • Next identify what underlying issue those feelings are TRULY about.

...Once you have identified the problem,

Yo! Let's solve it!

Now! Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it. 😉

Motivation through an Attitude of Gratitude

Motivation through an Attitude of Gratitude

I don't have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness - it's right in front of me if I'm paying attention and practicing gratitude.

- Brene Brown

Gratitude is more than just listing items you are happy to have. It is an attitude.

Gratitude is the ability to grasp onto that feeling of joy you experience when you are first presented with a new skill, situation, person, or object - and experiencing them again every time you come in contact with those things.

Remember, for example, the first time you ever drove a car...the thrill of pressing the pedals or turning the wheel and feeling the vehicle respond. Remember how excited you are to dress in a new outfit, or wear new shoes. Remember, when you experienced that first rush of emotion when the person who is now your significant other showed they had interest in you. Recall, the wonder you felt the first moment you beheld your child…

New and exciting experiences usually come with a rush of happy emotions. Unfortunately, as we get used to those people skills, objects, or situations, we lose that initial excited perspective.

Does it mean that we no longer value these things or people as much as we did the day they were new to us? No. Just that we become accustomed to them and don’t strongly consider our feelings about them.

But how would your day be different if this wasn’t the case?

...Imagine if you opened your eyes in the morning and were just excited about the bed you were laying on, the room you are in, and the people you get to spend your day with - as if these things were all brand new.

...Or, something that may be an even more powerful reminder - imagine if you no longer had them?

However powerful your feelings of loss you may feel when you consider no longer having these  people or situations in your life - that is how deep the feelings of gratitude for those loved ones and for your life truly is. But most often, we simply forget to keep these feelings top of mind.

How much happier may your days feel with that gratitude for all that you love brought to the surface? How much smaller may daily stresses or problems feel with that daily gratitude for what is important, keeping you centered?

This month, remember to consider situations, things, and above all - people around you throughout your day and reflect on how excited, thankful and grateful you are to have them in your life.

5 Tips for for Decluttering your Home and Workspace

5 Tips for for Decluttering your Home and Workspace

How much is clutter, and feelings of disorganization contributing to you feeling demotivated?

Use these 5 tips to declutter and organize your home and workspace - and - give a big boost to your overall motivation!

Some tips for decluttering:

1. - Tackle as much as you can at once. While it may seem smarter to do a bit at a time, that often doesn't have the same impact. Once you shift your mind into the mode of 'review', 'assess' and plan to either let go or keep - try to sort through as much of your home as possible in that moment. As you go room by room you may just gain momentum and as you start to see progress develop, get inspired to do more. Finally, it's much easier to keep an organized space tidy than to constantly shift clutter and tell yourself you'll deal with it later.

2. - Take a picture. Do you have items that you hang onto simply for sentimental reasons? A lamp, an outfit or a chest may take up valuable space all for the sake of that memory. Instead, take a picture! You'll still have those same memories and those same feelings of nostalgia when you look at the picture of the item, but it will only take up a fraction of the space it used to and will save you the stress of always moving the item, shifting it from place to place or having to decide over and over again what to do with it, how to care for it and so on...

3. - Do you love it? Unless you've been living under a rock for the last few years you've likely heard Marie Kondo's tips on holding an object and asking yourself if it brings you joy. It's a wonderful tip! If the answer is yes - keep it. If the answer is no however, it's likely that the space and stress relief you'll gain from getting rid of the item may bring far more happiness to you - so, to quote a Disney princess: "Let it gooo....let it gooooo!"

4. - When was the last time you used it? Each item you come to, ask yourself this question. If the answer is months or years, it's likely you can do without it going forward as well. Also, keep in mind, there are very few items that you can't simply buy again if you really need them. It may be worth the risk of repurchasing something in order to have the fresh, clean, decluttered feeling of space and organization that you'll gain by getting rid of that item.

5. - Paper Clutter - The above tip goes for paper items as well. Truly, when was the last time you needed to refer to a bank statement from 3 months ago. If you are comfortable with using a computer and making your bills paperless, this is a great option for reducing clutter, and also reducing wasted paper. Keep in mind that there is no need to keep anything that is saved somewhere digitally, anything that has information that can be looked up again, or anything that can simply be printed again - if needed.  As for the things you do use, create a specific spot for those papers to go and set a specific time that you'll review those papers and determine which need to be discarded, and which need to be filed away for keeping (and note what period of time those will be kept).

If you need some inspiration, go browse some home decor magazines and get those fresh, organized, clean and compelling images thumbtacked in your mind. That fresh, vibrant, and motivated feeling you get when you think about sitting in that room, is what we want your daily surroundings to entice in you every day!

You've got this!

5 Rules to Help You Set Achievable Goals

5 Rules to Help You Set Achievable Goals

We all have things we want to accomplish, just like we all probably have experience failing to meet those goals. Failing to meet our goals can leave us frustrated and discouraged or make us feel like we lack the capability to achieve what we want. Using a few rules to frame how we set our goals can help us make sure that our goals are achievable and that we’re set up for success.

1) Set Realistic Goals

While following your ambitions is a great thing, you might be setting yourself up for failure and frustration if you make too big a leap. When you are setting goals, you may find that your excitement leads you to setting goals that are outside the scope of your capabilities. You may be dreaming about writing a novel and decide that you want to have a finished novel within three months. You may have heard of a writer who has done something similar, but you may not have as much time to devote to the endeavor as other people.

Instead, you may be better off setting a goal like, “I want to spend at least ten hours each week working on a novel.” This will still hold you accountable without forcing you to stress out about a goal you might not be able to accomplish despite your best efforts.

2) Set Goals That Depend On Your Actions

One of the keys to meeting your goals is to set goals that depend on you. This might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to create goals that depend on the actions of others, not yourself. This rule means not setting goals like “I Want To Fall In Love,” as this goal depends on events you can’t control for success.

Instead, set a goal like “I Want To Meet More People,” which you have more control over (and who knows, could help you find love!) and can achieve. You could break this down further into action items like “I will sign up for a book club so I can make new friends.”

3) Set Specific Goals

One of the biggest rules when it comes to setting an achievable goal is to set out to do something specific within a set amount of time. Instead of setting a goal like “I Want To Cook More,” you could set a goal like “I Want To Cook Dinner At Home At Least Three Times A Week.” The specificity of this goal will help you hold yourself accountable and encourage you to achieve it.  If you aren’t specific about your goals, you may not hold yourself accountable and not get the results you’re after.

4) Put Your Goals In Writing
If you’re serious about achieving your goals, putting it in writing is a great idea! You can write out your goals and break them down into smaller goals and benchmarks that will help you stay on track. Using a planner can help you stay organized and help you work your goals into your daily plans so you always make time to achieve your dreams! (Be sure to check out our Compass Books - we've designed the a combination of a motivational journal and planner with your inspiration and goals in mind!)

5) Celebrate Your Success
Ambition is great and involves a lot of looking forward to plan next steps. But remember to stop sometimes, smell the roses, and give yourself credit for how far you've come. Also, assess what is working well, and what isn't supporting your goals so you can optimize as you go!

5 Tricks to Keep You Motivated to Lose Weight

5 Tricks to Keep You Motivated to Lose Weight

Remember the phrase, “out of sight, out of mind”? Well, it is just as true when it comes to your weight loss goals.

Make sure that weight loss is a conscious goal that you are reminded of all day long, especially in the places and during the times that you are most likely to stray.

Some ideas for making your weight loss goal more ‘visible’ include:

1. Write sticky notes to yourself

...Leave them on the bathroom mirror, the fridge, in the pantry, in your car or purse, or on your computer screen.

2. Set reminders and tasks

....Set them to yourself on your calendar or on your phone. – Set them to pop up and remind you to drink your water, eat your fruit, or simply remember your weight loss motivators or affirmations.

3. Put smaller clothing in plain sight.

Do you have a dress or a pair of pants that you are excited to fit back into? Put those items in plain sight where you will see them every day.  Hang them on the outside of the closet or drape them over a chair.  Make a point to start trying them on again as you make progress to see how much closer they are to fitting how you want.

4. Wear clothes that are slightly too tight.

There is nothing like a slight pinch at the waistline when you go to order at a restaurant to remind you to order the salad, fish, and vegetables rather than the plate of pasta and pie.  Remember, that slight discomfort will drive you to work hard all day while loose, baggy clothing will allow you to feel like you have room to splurge.

5. Use a picture.

Do you have a picture of yourself that is either bad or good?  Use a bad picture to help motivate you to never look like this again, or, use a good picture as inspiration to get back to looking the way you loved.  Put this picture right on the fridge or somewhere in the kitchen near the food.  This will inspire you right when you are the most likely to reach for something you know you don’t want to eat.

Not only do constant reminders keep you from doing something mindless that would get you off track, but keeping your goal front and center in your mind helps you realize creative ideas that support that goal.

For example: Say you are stuck in rush hour traffic and the cars are at a stand-still.  You have a sticky note in your car reminding you that you want to “Walk more”.  This sparks an idea and you pull into the next shopping center you see...

...Parking your car, you walk up and down the shopping center, adding an extra mile to your steps that day...

...When you get back on the road, traffic has lightened and you will easily reach home within minutes of when you may have anyway - but now - with more steps added to your day (and a positive sense of accomplishment)!

All in all, keeping something that is important to you front and center in your mind makes it far more likely that you will always be putting additional effort into that goal, just keep your goal in plain sight and your eye on the prize!

Building in a 'Margin of Error' / Under Promise Yourself so you can Over Deliver!

Building in a 'Margin of Error' / Under Promise Yourself so you can Over Deliver!

While we know 100% perfection is unobtainable, we continue to set goals that involve 100% effort. When in reality, AIMING for an 80-90% 'on-track' regimen is actually far more realistic; as it leaves a 'margin for error'  and is a more wholesome way to stick to your goals.

Speaking of the word 'error', while that is goal-speak for the workplace - in your own mind: start working to remove that negative self-talk from your mind. When things don't go as plan, they aren't 'bad', it isn't an 'error'.  As long as your goals include that realistic margin - things that aren't planned popping up are actually PART of the plan!

Remember to aim high, fail forward, and pat yourself on the back for each small success. After you get those elements on track it's very simple. Just rinse and repeat again and again - until you're at your goal!

Here's to staying motivated, on track and keep moving forward at 80% capacity!

Burning More by Multitasking

Burning More by Multitasking

What does cleaning our house have to do with your weight loss goals?

Everything!

The more you move, the more you burn, AND the more you increase you feelings of pride, excitement and build habits that are beneficial to you in MULTIPLE ways. This way, if you get in the habit of vacuuming your house a few times a week - even when you aren't feeling motivated to do it for your weight loss goals, you still may keep it up because you become addicted to that fresh clean feeling - and hence, support your calorie burning at the same time.

The more you can set into place, things that are beneficial to you in multiple ways, the more likely they will stick as part of your routine and will ultimately help you to burn more, lose more and stay at your goal weight!

7 Simple Ways To Rearrange Your Kitchen That Will Instantly Improve Your Diet

7 Simple Ways To Rearrange Your Kitchen That Will Instantly Improve Your Diet

7 Simple Ways To Rearrange Your Kitchen That Will Instantly Improve Your Diet

When you're home, how often do you wander to the fridge or pantry and take a peek inside to see what there is to eat?  Even if you've done it a few times already that day, don't you continue to hold out hope somewhere deep down inside - that this time - something new will magically appear that strikes our fancy and hits the imaginary 'spot!'  Something will appear that is both healthy and delicious, calorie-free yet indulgent all at the same time...!

Now...picture when you're at a party and the fruits and veggies are all cut up and laid out beautifully on a tray or in a pretty bowl.  How much more likely are you to add some of these delicious looking morals to your plate?.... What's more - how much more likely are you to eat the healthy foods in this situation than when those fruits or vegetables are closed away in the crisper drawer waiting for you to find, wash, peel and cut them...?

The point is - a huge part of eating is visual stimulation and convenience.  (There's a reason we agree to pay more when the snack food industry pre-packages perfect portions for us rather than doing it ourselves.)

Therefore, making healthier choices more readily available and more visually appealing you can drastically increase the number of times you reach for a healthier snack!

According to a study by Nestle the visual appeal of foods actually impacts the taste of the food as well:

“The energy content of food is not only assessed in the mouth or after consumption, but an estimation of the energy content is already established in the brain 200 milliseconds after looking at the food.”

There have also been numerous studies linking the visual appeal of food and how it affects people's buying habits.

All in all - if an appealing visual presentation of food is enough to influences and purchases, it’s no wonder it’s enough to affect our eating habits!

Below are some tips on how to re-arrange your pantry and fridge to improve you and your family's snacking choices.

What to do:
  1. Place healthy foods front and center in the fridge and pantry so they are the first thing you see.
  2. Use glassware or saran wrap that allows you to see the fruit or vegetables inside.
  3. Make these healthy foods easily accessible. For example: Wash and cut up fruits and veggies so they are ready to grab and eat. (And again, place them in a bowl with clear saran wrap so see the colorful and ready to eat fruit and veggies right away.)
  4. ‘Out of sight, out of mind’ – place higher calorie foods in the fridge drawers or in the top, bottom, or back of the pantry so it’s not in plain sight.
  5. Be sure to buy a colorful assortment of fruits, veggies and other healthy snacks. - The more colorful - the more visually appealing!
  6. Prepare ready-to-eat portions of healthy foods in advance so you can grab them before leaving the house.  Get the Tupperware with one large spot for veggies and one small spot for low-fat dip.
  7. Place a bowl out on the counter with an assortment of apples, oranges, pears and bananas. Seeing the fruit each time you enter the kitchen can remind you to grab a healthy snack on your way out the door and even keep you from going to the pantry at all!

Remember, eating involves more than just taste - make sure that you are appealing to your visual senses just as often and you'll improve your diet immediately!
