The Mind Yourself Podcast #66 - The impact of sport on wider society

The Mind Yourself Podcast #66 - The impact of sport on wider society

Have you ever consider sport and its impact on society?

Well Eoin and Christy sit down to discuss just that.  In the final episode in series 4 of the podcast the lads discuss how sport shapes societal values outside of just giving people an outlet to exercise. While there are benefits to how sport can build confidence in kids and teach them to appropriately deal with winning and losing; sport can also have a big impact on driving certain values across broader society and so its is important that the values promoted with individuals in sport are positive so the broader impact of that sport on societal values are positive. A deep topic indeed but one that offers a nice alternative perspective on the importance of sport and nicely wraps up the season on the back of some fantastic conversation with athletes and experts from various fields!

The Mind Yourself Podcast #53 - The characteristics of an elite athlete

The Mind Yourself Podcast #53 - The characteristics of an elite athlete

After a long hiatus, Christy and Eoin are back with the latest instalment of The Mind Yourself Podcast. This season they are investigating the relationship between sport and mental health. We will be speaking with experts in the field of sports psychology.

We wanted to cover this topic because sport is often the only way that some children can develop discipline, gain one good adult, and even improve their emotional intelligence. We will have a range of sports psychologists, athletes and exercise scientists this season, who vary in expertise across individual and team sports. In this first episode we will cover some of the key personality traits that are common in elite athletes. We will look at how these characteristics can enhance sport performance while also seeing how they can help anyone to improve their mental health and wellbeing.

This week Christy and Eoin sit down to discuss a very exciting development with Motus and our education services. For the last year we have been developing an app to help us reach more children and schools.

The lads discuss how the app will provide untold potential to educate more children, how it will work in the classroom and what age groups it will support at the beginning. Eoin and Christy both agree that the other huge advantage of the app will be it will allow children to continue their emotional intelligence education after our workshops while also giving the teachers a brilliant tool for their arsenal that ensures they can effectively provide weekly mental health education for their students that they can trust is backed by science and research.

If you are a parent or teacher who would like the app in your school, please contact us using the information below.

This week’s Christy sits down with Dr. Elayne Ahern, who is a postgraduate researcher at the University of Limerick.

We felt that this podcast was extremely relevant to mental health week, because it addresses the role of technology in mental health therapy.

Dr. Ahern’s research spans from the effectiveness of online therapy to the application of cognitive development to combat depression. This is an excellent discussion, not only for psychology students and clinicians but also anyone interested in psychology. It’s one of our favourite podcasts to date and provides insight into how therapists can improve their standard of practice.
