Mount Carmel Ministries

By Mount Carmel Ministries

Since 1938 Mount Carmel has been a place of rest, spiritual renewal, and Biblical education. Our historical roots as part of the Lutheran Bible Institute inform how we live our mission as an independent organization today. This podcast will provide free listening to all who are curious about what we teach at Mount Carmel. From historical episodes recorded in the 1970s to our most recent camps, we share it freely. We live out our mission through biblically-based, Christ-centered programming and hospitality.

Jesus is Trustworthy: Session 9: Ted Hill
In an age of many complications, evil and frantic activity, it can be easy to wonder how it is possible for light to not be overwhelmed by so much darkness around us.  Jesus was never rattled by accusation or confrontation; Jesus never gave up on the disciples who didn't seem to get what Jesus was about; Jesus never lost interest when it seemed people were trying to use His notoriety to gain something for themselves; Jesus never succumbed to the pressures around Him.  In the midst of what would definitely defeat me, He was compassionate, spoke with wisdom, taught with weight and eternal substance, proclaimed with joy, and engaged with love.  It boggles my mind what Jesus did and what Jesus still does.  We will walk through some of Jesus' parables, miracles, and challenges to the disciples, religious leaders, and gentiles to uncover how beautifully trustworthy Jesus is in our lives today! Ted Hill is the program director at the Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute.

Who was the Pharaoh of the Exodus? Can we know? Does it matter? What can we say about the plagues in light of science? Where and how did Israel cross the “Red Sea”? Might remains of the chariot army yet be found? Appreciate the Law in its proper context, as a gift from God, but not as a means of salvation. Consider what “hardening the heart” was and still is. Hear again of the God of Israel who came down to set his people free from bondage. Come and compare the Exodus with God’s New Testament act of deliverance, the cross.  Fred's book can be found here: https://www.solapublishing.com/exodus-found:-new-evidence-for-the-old-story_B-B300

7 Signs of John: Session 1: Pastor Dave Wollan
7 Signs of John: Session 1: Pastor Dave Wollan
Unlike the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, John does not record many miracles of Jesus. With each of the seven signs in John, we learn a little more about Jesus. From changing water into wine in Cana to raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus reveals His love and power to the world. Journey through each of John’s seven signs with Pastor Dave Wollan from Faith Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, Minnesota.

We Are Family! Brian Spahr: Session 5
--We are Family!-- "God wants relationship with us. That has always been true. You can see it in the creation story in Genesis all the way through the end of the Bible in Revelation. There are several types of relationships -- friendships, business associates, acquaintances... but none of these really capture what God is after. Instead, God thinks of and treats us as family. What might it look like to treat ourselves fully as members of the family of God? Join us as we explore together, through scripture, stories and experiences." Jesus in the Storm: Dave Wollan
Jesus in the Storm: Dave Wollan
Mark 4:35-41  New International Version (NIV) Jesus Calms the Storm 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Building Bridges: Faith's Impact on Politics: Dr. Mark Mattes: Session 6
Thomas Jefferson’s phrase “Separation of Church and State” raises our partisan blood pressure as it relates to various social and political issues of our day. Faith was vital in the formation of our nation, from the Puritans to the Enlightenment Deism of the Founding Fathers. How should Bible-centered Christians respond? Do Christians have some resources to help build bridges between people of opposite political persuasions? We will look at how our nation has become so polarized and seek to find ways faithful to our Christian heritage to help Americans be more understanding of one another. Mark Mattes is a professor of Theology and Philosophy at Grand View University.

Using the acrostic H.E.A.R.T., pastor Nathan Hoff will help us reflect on the life of David and apply the themes of Hope, Endurance, Affections, Relationships, and Thanksgiving to our lives. Nathan is married to Joy Hoff and they have four children named Christian, Annika, Samuel, and Peter. Favorite scripture: I love the last verse of 2nd Corinthians (13.14) "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." Favorite quote: Of late my favorite quote is from the Augsburg Confession article 20 on good works, "The Holy Spirit is received through faith, hearts are renewed and given new affections." Favorite Church Activity: Hearing and speaking absolution. Justus Johan Lindar, in Bo Geirtz' novel The Hammer of God proclaims, "But now I see that which is done, and I see that the whole debt is paid. Now, therefore, I go about my duties as might a prison warden who carries in his pocket a letter of pardon for all his criminals. Do you wonder that I am happy?"
