252 - Megan: Impossible - The Road to Dead Reckoning Part Two (Part One)
Megan has never seen a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie. Dan and Stephen are making her watch ALL OF THEM. That’s right, as the final (?) film in the series slowly approaches, we will be going through the ultimate preparatory task. It sounds impossible, but we’ll succeed, just like Ethan Hunt and the IMF gang! We have plenty of time, so this won’t be a back-to-back-to-back project, but expect plenty of M:I talk over the coming year or so. What do the individual filmmakers bring to the table? What defines the series? What elements are purged with each new entry? Would Ethan beat John Wick in a fight to the death? We go deep, and we come out of it with an abiding love for Luther, everyone’s favorite hacker. Instead, we decided to chillax and discuss what we’ve been watching lately. Maybe you’ve seen the same stuff. Maybe you’ll come out of this with some new recommendations. You'll remember a few episodes back when we discussed the film Forgotten Silver, the faux-documentary delight from New Zealand by filmmakers Costa Botes and Peter Jackson. By some magic of blind luck, divine intervention, and/or SEO, the episode managed to come across the ears of Costa Botes himself, who was kind enough to join me for chat.
In a historic feat of logisiics, I was able to calculate the time zone difference between Philadelphia and New Zealand and schedule a Zoom call that suited both of our schedules. In a downright heroic feat of tech savvy, I was able to cut out a portion of the interview where the free Zoom ran out of time and we had to restart. I feel like Angelina Jolie in Hackers.

We all know Peter Jackson as the man behind LORD OF THE RINGS (yaaaay!), THE HOBBIT (not so yay!), and a variety of goopy classics like MEET THE FEEBLES (yay!), DEAD ALIVE (yay!), and BADF TASTE (yay!), but were you aware that in 1995 he teamed up with Costa Botes to direct a faux-film history documentary? Well he did. It’s called FORGOTTEN SILVER, and it’s an influence on our guest, filmmaker Woody Fentress. Woody is the founder of the production companies Family Portrait Friend Pictures and Broken Bread. One time we went to see a Star War and he brought action figures. It was impressive.
