Experiencing changes to your body is never easy. Going through breast reconstruction surgery is no different whether It is due to breast cancer or infection. the impact on your self esteem, as well as your physical and emotional well being is far reaching. Finding your physical new normal is a painful process when you are forced to go through traumatic surgery in order for you to live. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I had the distinct pleasure of of speaking with my sister and dear friend Miss Zakeisha. She is one of the kindest and strongest women I have ever known. Together, share our journeys through breast reconstruction, illnesses and trying to find our way through the mental and emotional impact losing your breast has on who you are as a woman, as a human, as a mother and even as a lover. So many people have been taught that to be strong, we have to hide everything that hurts us, push the pain down as deep as it will go, smile and pretend that everything is always okay. Release your emotions from the prison they are captive allowing yourself to process whatever has happened to you. To get to the other side where self love, peace and joy reside you must first: Let it Hurt, Let It Bleed, Let It Heal and then finally Let It Go.
