Episode 26. Artastic Collective Curriculum for Art Teachers is OPEN for Enrollment!
So, the reason why I'm so pumped is that the response to the Artastic Collective has been amazing and so far I am seeing so many art teachers that are saying yes to the transformation for their year. The reason why they are experiencing a transformation is that they are saying goodbye to all that lesson planning all that searching on Pinterest or on Facebook groups trying to find ideas or just even just sticking together a whole bunch of low-quality free resources. Instead, they're choosing to transform their world by enrolling in the membership that is going to allow them a culturally diverse curriculum that explores a range of art making styles artists, and art history movements in addition to the elements of art and principles of design, and themes. In this episode I will talk about my personal philosophy when designing Art Lessons and all about my Art Teacher or Educator Curriculum that is open for a limited time during this Back-to-School Season! Episode 17. 5 End of Year Art Lesson Ideas
In this episode I’m going to give you some fresh and new ideas for teaching art at the End of the Year and yes, this shall include End of Year Art Lesson Ideas! Now the best thing about the end of the year is that you officially can start counting down those days, tearing up your classroom and minimizing all the mess and clutter that accumulated throughout the year, and you can start re-designing your dreams for your classroom for the year to come. It is the perfect time for Reflective Teaching where you can reflect on what you did well, what worked, lessons kids loved that you should do next year or similar ones of, but also reflect on what you should do less of or what you can let go of. Every year I tear apart my room and re-design and I generally recycle or remove. I do this during the last month, as kids are busy, just doing a tiny bit at a time, and before I know it, I’m walking out the door on the last day, all done and ready-to-go for when Back to School rolls around. As well, I always think about things that worked well and I write down things I want to change or add or do more of next year, that way when I return in the next school year, I can look at my notes and I am ready to go… Once I go into vacation mode, there is no turning back and I will be quick to forget literally everything. Anyways, let’s talk End of the Year Art Lesson Ideas! Here are my 5 Art Lesson Ideas for the End of the Year. BLOG: https://msartastic.com/2021/05/10/5-end-of-year-art-lesson-ideas-for-kids/

Episode 16: 6 Social Emotional Learning Art Lesson Ideas for your Classroom
Hi there! My name is Kathleen McGiveron and you’re listening to the Ms Artastic Podcast and today I’m going to dive in on the topic of Social Emotional Learning and how you can teach it through art. Before we begin, let’s understand what Social Emotional Learning, or SEL is and what it can look like in the art classroom or through art!  SEL (Social Emotional Learning) is a process that both kids and adults can understand and use to manage their emotions, set goals, feel and show empathy towards others, and learn social awareness and socializing skills to allow them to build relationships. The five core competencies of SEL are: Self-awareness (recognize one’s emotions and understand how it influences behavior),  Self-management (the ability to regulate one’s emotions and behaviors in different situations), Social awareness (the ability to take perspectives and empathize with people from culturally diverse backgrounds), Relationship skills (the ability to develop and maintain healthy relationships with people and groups of diverse backgrounds), and Responsible decision-making (the ability to make respectful choices based on personal behavior and social interactions and care for the well-being of self and others). --- ART TEACHERS! -----Get FREE Elements of Art POSTERS...... This topic can cover anything from sustainable living practices to bringing awareness to things that are destroying our world such as de-forestation or polluted oceans, to awareness of endangered species, to the importance of reducing garbage and single-use materials and use re-usable or recyclable materials instead… It is about climate change… it is about our planet. Episode 14. Art Teacher TLC
Welcome to the Ms Artastic Podcast, I am your host and the creator of everything that is in Artastic Nation, Kathleen McGiveron. Today I’m going to be talking about something important, which is Art Teacher TLC. We can’t be there for the kids if we aren’t there for ourselves first. As we know, teaching consumes a lot of our focus power, energy, and emotions. Some years are harder than others, and some moments in the day are more stressful. This pandemic year has added another lovely layer to it. I’m going to dive-in and remind you to take care of you. You can’t be there for your students, or family or furbabies or yourself if you don’t take care of you too. It is like when you’re on the plane and they remind you to put the face mask on yourself before you help others... Right because we can’t help anyone if we’re passed out or whatever. You need to provide YOURSELF with oxygen first because you can’t give oxygen to others if you’re on the floor. You especially cannot be an Art Teacher BOSS if you’re too tired to allow for the awesome habit building and mindset shifts. Episode 13. Being an Art Teacher BOSS... Strategies
Welcome to the Ms Artastic Podcast. I’m your host, Kathleen McGiveron and today we’re going to continue the talk about what it means to be an Art Teacher BOSS and how to become one. In the last episode I talked about the MINDSETS that Art Teacher BOSSES need to live by. Today we’re going onto the second part of this two-part series and I’m going to give you those real and raw strategies that will set you on a growth path that will ultimately take you to the Art Teacher BOSS Level. Let’s dive into it! Before we begin we have to understand what it means to be BOSS. Someone who is boss knows what they want, how to get what they want, and implements the process to get it. This is what it means to be BOSS! Essentially, you’re the ultimate to-do list checker, task completer, and productivity person. Being boss is a great mindset to have. Of course, it’s not just mindset. You have to feel it in your heart and you have to do the work to get there. Being boss means that your actively and consciously doing the steps each and every day, every moment, working to make the slight improvements in yourself that are needed to get to your goals and your better version of yourself. I like to say: “Reflect, self-improve, and calibrate perfection.” Of course, this is a LONG journey of success, not a quick trip. This is way of LIVING LIFE. This topic is so big that I had to make it a two-parter because honestly, there is so much to say. That is HOW IMPORTANT Being BOSS is. Being an Art Teacher BOSS is a lifestyle change and, if you’re ready, you can implement these changes to change your mindset and change your life. All changes are hard at the beginning, messy in the middle, and easy at the end. My lovely friend, make sure that you have a notebook ready, phone to make notes in, or if you’re listening while you’re driving or running... that’s ok. Just jot down these tips as soon as you can and get ready to implement them too so that you can be an Art Teacher BOSS. In the first part of this two-part series of Being an Art Teacher BOSS, I talked about mindsets that you can implement into your boss journey. Today, I’ll talk about things that you can do in your teaching practice to fire it up and take it to boss level. They will help you get those things checked off your to-do list and help you be a more productive teacher so that you can leave sooner each day. Because living your life... Is kind of a big deal. Alright, let’s talk about things that you can do in your teaching practice to fire it up and take it to boss level. Episode 11. Reflective Art Teaching Practices
This is a topic that I need to focus on as well. It is so often that we feel alone in our classrooms, offices, or studios... We show up, do the work, and go home. Sometimes we have colleagues, but it’s not all the time that we see them. As well, they may know you well, but they might not know what is happening inside your classroom, or your office, or studio. I think it is important that we remind ourselves of the magic makers in our lives, which are ourselves. Let's dive into some Reflective Teaching Strategies that you can use in your art classroom! Episode 9. Inspiring Reluctant Artists in your Art Classroom
Art Teachers, in today’s podcast, we’re going to talk about Inspiring your Reluctant Artists or Art Makers. Encouraging students to make art can sometimes happen easily and other times, it’s a challenge. You bring out, act out, or show your “hook” and BAM! They’re engaged and are wanting to do their best. Depending on the age or the student’s own personal experience with creating art, this is sometimes a challenge and you might even get a complete refusal. As a teacher, it is our job to encourage a student to create. After many years of experience teaching, and having taught art to students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, I have a few tricks up my sleeve in terms of getting ALL your students to create art, even if they really don’t want to. Before we dive in on looking at different approaches, it is important to know that building a relationship and earning your student’s trust is key for success, not only for the art project you’re working on, but to create an environment where the student always feel safe when making art. A lot of the time, the barriers for not wanting to create are: self-judgement, fear of peer judgment, fear of failure, and lack of exposure to creating art. Remember, that creating art can make a lot of people feel vulnerable. Creative thinking and using new mediums or materials can make people (including students) feel uncomfortable. All of these prevent individuals from wanting to do their best. A lot of times kids act out or are reluctant to try because they fear what their peers might think. And isn’t this true for us as well? Let’s take a look at some strategies you can try out in your classroom! Make sure you stick to one for a while to ensure that the new habit or pattern makes a difference (1 day is not sufficient). Episode 8. Ideas for Fast Finisher Activities in the Art Classroom
Art Teacher, in today’s podcast, we’re going to talk about what to do with those Fast Finishing students. Now, there are two reasons kids finish fast. First, they finish fast because they are focused and on task and don’t spend time getting distracted or procrastinating. The second reason is that they just rushed right through. If you suspect some rushing, kindly ask the student to either add more detail to their work or slow down and take their time to do their best, or ask them to put it on the white board with a magnet and stand back to look at the work to see if they, themselves, can find any areas to improve on. Either way, you’re always going to have students finish before the rest so let’s take a look at some ideas or routines that you can build into your classroom so that students know what to do when they’re done so they don’t have to ask you and so that you don’t have to instruct them on what to do EVERY time. Episode 4. Tips for Teaching Art during Distance or Remote Learning
Teaching during Distance Learning is going to be oh so challenging for teachers. There is not one model to follow. Some are teaching in class and might be going remote later, or will start remote then will switch to in class. Some teachers are teaching on a cart and remotely. There are full remote learning models and there are hybrid models. All of this adds to confusion and stress because we’re not all in the same boat together and instead it feels like were drifting on a raft in the middle of the ocean and the winds just picked up and the sharks have arrived. At times, it even feels like the raft is just breaking apart. Here are my tips for teaching art during Distance Learning or Remote Learning. Episode 2. Who is Ms Artastic Anyway? Get to Know Kathleen McGiveron.
Hello my lovely friends! Today I thought I’d share with you a little bit about WHO I am. Now before I do, I’ll give you a brief introduction about who I am and then… I’ll go DEEP! Hey there, I’m Kathleen McGiveron and I’m a professional artist, teacher, and the creator of Ms Artastic. As an artist, I create lowbrow artworks and have shown my work in both commercial and public galleries. I’m also Ms Artastic and I create art teaching resources and art lessons for Artastic Nation. I have two cats named Audrey and Russell and I live in Canada. I love creating art lessons that engage kids and ask them to experiment with a range of mediums and materials. I like to make lives easier for teachers by offering fully planned art lessons with ALL the resources they need to teach confidently and free their lives from endless lesson planning.
