Ruby J: authenticity, music growth & tik tok for music promotion

For this next episode we sit down with 16-year-old singer-songwriter Ruby J. With a stunningly unique vocal tone, Ruby releases tunes in such a range of musical styles, with influences ranging from Amy Winehouse to Jorja Smith. From acoustic-esque ballads to catchy electronic beats, her songs have it all, and it's going to be exciting to see what she comes out with next. 

Ruby has already made a massive mark for such a young age, accumulating over 1 million likes through her Tik Tok where she regularly posts a range of content, alongside her appearance on The Voice Kids. Incredibly hard working, she is always releasing content and pushing her music out to listeners. 

In this episode I chatted to Ruby about all of us progress so far, the doors that social media can open and her process to creating such varied music, along with so much more.

For this next episode, we sit down and chat with bristol based techno DJ / Producer The Yard Woman. Resident DJ for Dolce Vita and La Collectif as well as recently having her track 'Jupiter' featured on Jaguar's Radio 1 BBC Introducing Dance Show. 

Involved in many aspects of the Bristol music scene, Elena also works to put on events in her area and beyond. Alongside this, she is currently also a massive part of the creation of the Lady of The House book, a book about women in electronic dance music which I highly recommend you go check out. The book is due to be released in Autumn this year and features interviews with some amazing women. 

In this episode, I chatted to Elena about her discovery of electronic music during her childhood / teenage years over in Greece, alongside her discovery of techno and music-making process, the resurgence of live music, as well as her part in the making of the Lady of The House Book. Welcome to season 2 of the Music Gals podcast. For this first episode, we sit down and chat with rising garage rock artist Lauran Hibberd. Lauran's sound encompasses warm fuzzy guitars, lighthearted and funny titles, with strong influences from bands like Weezer. 

Lauran is smashing it and has already achieved so much, fulfilling some true music bucket list moments from playing Glastonbury to supporting acts like Hippo Campus and The Regrettes on the European legs of their tours. She recently collaborated with The Regrettes Lydia Knight on her single 'How Am I Still Alive', ahead of her new EP 'Goober' that's out for release on the 30th July. Along with this, she recently released a brand new single 'Bleugh' which packs a punch of fuzzy and powerful guitars, and she also currently has tickets on sale for her 'Goober' tour. 

I this episode I chatted to Lauran about her musical processes, specifically during lockdown, and how she has kept inspired, along with chatting about the growth of her stage presence and confidence, and what it's been like to work with artists and producers she looks up to. For the next episode of the music gals podcast, I sit down with Monday Moonchild, a dream-pop / synth-pop artist also known as Iona. Iona released her first single 'In Your Eyes' during the pandemic and has released a tonne of material since then. With bright electronic self-produced beats and psychedelic, reflective vocals, her music is unique, taking influence from artists like Tame Impala. Recording and releasing her debut EP Quaranqueen only recently, you can go stream her music on all streaming platforms.

For the next episode of the music gals podcast we sit down with Janishia Jones; a music business executive, entrepreneur, and singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA. Janishia has led a decade long career working for some of the most revered music companies in the world including SRC / Loud Records, eOne LP, and Kobalt Music Publishing. Currently, in her role as a music publishing senior executive at EMPIRE, her expertise in copyright & royalty administration has resulted in her becoming responsible for the success of some of the greatest songwriters & producers of our generation. 

A long-time advocate for artist's rights, Janishia founded the self-management & artist development platform Brok'n Records LLC in 2010 as a vehicle for DIY artists to maintain their independence in a changing music environment. Serving as a safe space and to bring awareness to socio-economic issues affecting black millennial women, she also founded Fresh 'N Sassy Productions, a podcast & multi-media platform, whose premier exhibit 'Taking Up Space: a music + art pop up' showcased the talents of local black female artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs. 

In this episode, we went through Janishia's journey into royalties, what goes into her role day today, and the other exciting projects she has run and been a part of.

It was incredibly interesting to sit down and talk to Lotje about the steps she took to become a tour manager, what goes into the job, and advice for those looking to go into the field. For the next episode we sit down with AJA, an experimental electronic sound artist whose performances are unforgettable. Aja experiments with rhythmic noise, channeling intense and mostly improvised performances through her live hardware setup. Collaborating with designer LU LA LOOP, Aja's costumes are bright, pink, bold and unique, pretty much works of art. Active in supporting the LGBTQ+ community, AJA worked hard to put on Nottingham event 'Queer Noise Club'. I got the chance to chat to Aja about her musical identity and how this has evolved, chatting about the processes behind the costumes and live installations she performs with, along with how she has handled the lack of live events; her main musical outlet. I am super excited to be here with the first episode of this series, where I am going to get the chance to sit down and chat to lots of incredibly talented and inspiring gals and non-binary working in the music industry, in order to offer support, inspiration and advice if you need it. In this episode I sit down with Grace Lee, an incredibly talented performer and songwriter. Grace's voice is powerful and unforgettable and her songs will touch your heart, and I am so happy to have her come on and talk about her pathway into music, her writing and recording process and her role in the band 'All Over Again'. I also got the chance to talk to Grace about finding things to post on social media in lockdown, and the woes of finding creativity when we aren't leaving the house.
