My Fellow Americans: The Inaugural Addresses of the U.S. Presidents

By Yuvraj Singh

On January 20th, 2021, Joe Biden will deliver his inaugural address – the first speech he will give as president. The history of the address goes back to 1789, with George Washington's first. The inaugural address provides hope to a nation, letting them know that the best is yet to come, that days of glory and happiness are ahead.

From November 18th until January 19th, I'll be publishing a new address everyday read by myself or someone else. Look out for the book, My Fellow Americans, on January 20th as well. It brings together each address along with essays from presidential scholars.

FDR's 3rd Inaugural Address - 01/20/1941 - Isaac Meyer

FDR's 3rd Inaugural Address - 01/20/1941 - Isaac Meyer

Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered his 3rd inaugural address on January 20th, 1941. Read by Isaac Meyer, host of the History of Japan podcast (http://isaacmeyer.net/). FDR is, and will remain, the only president to serve more than two terms (barring a repeal of the 22nd amendment). The United States had managed to officially stay out of the war, but that all changed after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7ty, 1941. Events quickly followed – Japan declared war on the United States, followed by Britain declaring war on Japan, followed by the United States declaring war on Japan, followed by Germany and Italy declaring war on the United States, followed by the United States declaring war on Germany and Italy.

The cover art is an 1941 photo of FDR by Abbie Rowe.

FDR's 2nd Inaugural Address - 01/20/1937 - Jay Tomlinson

FDR's 2nd Inaugural Address - 01/20/1937 - Jay Tomlinson

Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered his 2nd inaugural address on January 20th, 1937 – the new date that all following inaugurals would follow. Read by Jay! Tomlinson, producer of the Best of the Left podcast (https://www.bestoftheleft.com/) . FDRs 1st and 2nd inaugural addresses are host to some of the most memorable lines, including “I see one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished,” from his 2nd. Whereas dealing with the Great Depression was the most important part of his 1st term, his 2nd would be just as momentous, with war erupting in the Old World. Though the US managed to stay out of it for the duration of the 2nd term, the beginning of his 3rd would see them enter the fray officially.

The cover art is an 1932 photo of FDR by Vincenzo Laviosa.

FDR's 1st Inaugural Address - 03/04/1933 - Read by Cory Doctorow

FDR's 1st Inaugural Address - 03/04/1933 - Read by Cory Doctorow

Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered his powerful 1st inaugural address on March 4th, 1933. Read by Cory Doctorow (https://pluralistic.net/). It was the last inauguration to be held on March 4th; the 20th amendment, passed earlier that year, moved Inauguration Day to January 20th. FDR had just won a landslide against Hoover in the presidential election and took the reins at the height of the Great Depression. He led the implementation of the New Deal, which helped lead to a Democratic White House for all but two terms from 1933 until 1969. His storied presidency (totaling four terms) would see him ranked in the top 3 presidents (changing spots here and there with Washington & Lincoln).

The cover art is 1947 portrait of FDR by Frank O. Salisbury.

Grover Cleveland's 1st Inaugural Address - 03/04/1885 - Read by Bruce Carlson

Grover Cleveland delivered his first inaugural address on March 4th, 1885. Read by Bruce Carlson, host of the My History Can Beat Up Your Politics (https://myhistorycanbeatupyourpolitics.wordpress.com/) podcast. Grover Cleveland has the honor of being the only president to serve two non-contiguous terms. He was well regarded during his time, noted for his honesty and stances against corruption and patronage – issues that have plagued most politics through the ages.

The cover art is an 1889 portrait of Grover Cleveland by Anders Zorn.

Rutherford B. Hayes Inaugural Address - 03/05/1877 - Read by Yuvraj Singh

Rutherford B. Hayes delivered his inaugural address on March 5th, 1877. Read by Yuvraj Singh. The Election of 1876 was only the 2nd time that a president had lost the popular vote but won the electoral; it is the first of four where a Republican had lost the popular vote, but won the electoral college. He had pledged not to run for a 2nd term and stuck with his promise; he used his time in government to reform the civil service restore faith in government. His presidency was during the Gilded Age, when wealth disparity was widespread. He noted this after his presidency.

> “[I]t is time for the public to hear that the giant evil and danger in this country, the danger which transcends all others, is the vast wealth owned or controlled by a few persons. Money is power. In Congress, in state legislatures, in city councils, in the courts, in the political conventions, in the press, in the pulpit, in the circles of the educated and the talented, its influence is growing greater and greater. Excessive wealth in the hands of the few means extreme poverty, ignorance, vice, and wretchedness as the lot of the many…. Let the people be fully informed and convinced as to the evil. Let them earnestly seek the remedy and it will be found…. We may reach and remove the difficulty by changes in the laws regulating corporations, descents of property, wills, trusts, taxation, and a host of other important interests, not omitting lands and other property.”

The cover art is an 1884 portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes by Daniel Huntington.

James Buchanan's Inaugural Address - 03/04/1857 - Read by Yuvraj Singh

James Buchanan delivered inaugural address on March 4th, 1857. Read by Yuvraj Singh. Buchanan is perhaps best known for being the president immediately before Abraham Lincoln. Considered one of the lower ranked presidents, Buchanan is often compared to his successor. He supported the Dred Scott which held that American citizenship was not meant for Black people, whether enslaved or free – and so the rights provided by the Constitution did not apply to them (the decision is widely considered to be one of, if not the, worst Supreme Court decision).

The cover art is an 1859 portrait of James Buchanan by George Peter Alexander Healy.
