Dark side of the Borders: Pink Floyd/Sam Fender analysis

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Hey guys! We're back. This week we discuss getting old, emotional responses to music and social class divides. J divulges what happened to her when she recently dived back into an album she had a deep connection with in her 20's: Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. I discuss the surprising emotional response I had when seeing Sam Fender at Finsbury Park a few weeks ago. I thought I was too old to feel something with new artists? Wrong. As usual, lots of ridiculous, random chat surrounding serious social poverty issues, terrible viagra advertising involving a 10ft high chicken and my disgust at Noel Gallagher's sexy disco music. Stop. It. Thankyou. blink-182 - part 4

blink-182 - part 4

Hey guys! Well here we are with the 4th instalment of the blink story. The first of 2 instalments on life post blink. We're taking you back to 2006 where a freshly divorced blink-182 both find themselves in new relationships, +44 and Angels and Airwaves respectively. We dive into the debut, and to this day only, album by +44 "When Your Heart Stops Beating." We explore the dark, lyrical content of No, it isn't including an annotated spoken word performance from J and I as we slowly lose "our brains". We then compare and contrast it to the AvA debut "We Don't Need To Whisper". So come along and enjoy some blink chat as well as life updates, drinking alcohol and sex dream analysis apparently. This isn't just goodbye. This is we can't stand you. (Jokes jokes. We love you all). Music Reality TV - The Aftermath with Cristina D'Annunzio

Music Reality TV - The Aftermath with Cristina D'Annunzio

Hey guys! We've got some X-tra Factor for you. We're back with Cristina for some extra content. Our reality pop music chat got so deep and off piste that we created an X-Factor chaser. In this episode we voice our opinions freely on how these music shows affected all of our lives and changed the music industry forever. It gave the public a power they had never had before that we unfortunately, more often than not, abused. We catapulted these ordinary people into the spotlight without the appropriate support and we abandoned them when we were all done. This has then caused a hangover into the new Gen Z generation on the platforms of tik tok influencers. We discuss cancel culture, what we thought of as "normal", mental health, the death of the paparazzi and the birth of us becoming the press. These are all our opinions and we appreciate all your input too so please join the conversation with respectful love or hate please. Music Reality TV with Cristina D'Annunzio Part 1

Hey guys! We're back for Season 4 and this week we are The Cheeky Girls (cheeky cheeky). We're here with a wonderful guest and friend of the pod, Cristina D'Annunzio, our own personal Honey-G, to discuss our wealth of fond memories and knowledge surrounding music reality TV shows. She can also rap and do a cracking impression of the announcer dude off X-Factor. Listen to the ep to hear those. We take a trip down memory lane through the fun and (in hindsight) mucky world of reality music shows from Pop Idol, Pop Stars: the Rivals, X-Factor and The Voice. We laugh a lot and discuss the implications of the auditions phase, "jigsaw bands", sibling/incest duos and acts you probably long forgot about. Grab a drink and join us - you're all through to Judges Houses. Midlake: On the Road with J & N

Midlake: On the Road with J & N

Hey friends! We've finally crawled to the end of season 3 and we are beyond grateful to anyone still journeying with us. This week we travel to Edinburgh to watch Midlake perform at the Liquid Rooms. Join us as we navigate the hustle and bustle of our nation's capital complete with automatic lawnmowers, alarms, sirens and birdsong. We discuss not only the wonderful performance of Midlake but also what it means to experience live music and how it can't be separated from the city you experience it in. Glasgow and Edinburgh are only an hour away from each other but the gig etiquette could not be more different. So are you team Glasgow gig or team Edinburgh gig? Join the discussion y'all and see you all soon in season 4. Take That: For the Record

Take That: For the Record

This week Take That relight our fires (and possibly scar us for life) as we watch their 2006 documentary For The Record. This one is a special request for long time supporter, friend and fan Sareem Griage. We hope we did it justice. Join us and the mad bunch of young Manc lads as they travel the icky, sticky cake and jelly filled food waste hellscape of the pop machine in their early 90s heyday, through to the departure of Robbie and the eventual breakdown of the band when all we wanted was their lipstick marks still on their coffee cups. We discuss important issues amongst the madness including addiction, the muckiness of the music industry, boys struggling to talk about mental health and male...er...bonding activities? Never forget. Well we can't forget anything that happened in the 90's and 00's and we can't let you lot do that either so join us for one (could it be) magic trip back to Take That's 90's fever dream. Britpop Part 2 - Mojo dramatic reading and offensive accents

Britpop Part 2 - Mojo dramatic reading and offensive accents

Hey guys! This week we bring you a vintage magazine reading a.k.a our new obsession. This season we're bringing you #133 of MOJO from April 2003. In the edition we read a full britpop reflection article. There are soundbites from britpop legends looking back on the heady heyday of britpop. Along the way we meet cancelled misogynistic car and Mülller rice ads. We then try to go full method and bring you the authentic accents of Liam Gallagher, Graham Coxon, Jarvis Cocker, Phil Savidge (Savage?) Et Al to varying degrees of success (sorry). So without further ado come back to 2003 and bathe with us in the nostalgia, the regret, the class A drugs, the cigarettes, the alcohol and the musicians that got all tangled up in the britpop machine and made it out the other side to embrace a new century. J & N xoxo

Scotland the Rave

Scotland the Rave

Hey guys! Hope you're taking it easy in the New Year. Since we can't rave at the minute we're bringing the rave to you! This week we're taking a deeper dive into rave culture in the west coast of Scotland and how it is intrinsically tied up with working class, "ned" youth culture and the futile need to escape. We look at the culture through the lens of Graeme Armstrong's (writer of The Young Team) BBC documentary Scotland The Rave. We hope we provide a meaningful, respectful commentary on the rave community and the associated sub cultures. Graeme Armstrong you're an amazing guy who has written a truly beautiful account of being a YT member and all the anxiety and hopelessness that comes with that but the presenting style in this doc is off the wall. There's a segment where he's just skating around the Time Capsule.. or was he? J was convinced there was stunt legs involved. For anyone that was a YT, PC DJ, Raver, Scheme wean looking to escape this one is for you. Christmas with J & N

Ho Ho Ho guys! The festive season is upon us and whether you celebrate or not, whether you love it or hate it, whether it's a rough time for you or if it brings you joy, come have a babycham with us and be merry as we discuss Christmas music! J regales us with anecdotes and Christmas songs from her experience with weird retail Christmas playlists. Pet rats for Christmas anyone? Then I try to (probably unsuccessfully) cancel "sexy" Christmas songs. Does Sexualising Santa make you wanna chuck up your mince pies too? After I've calmed down I bring you some blinkmas bangers. And then J and I round things off by discussing our favourite Christmas songs of all time. Ranging from a deep dive into the beautiful, deep meaningful imagery of The Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood by J to me trying not to fall deeper in love with soft boi Liam Gallager as he spreads Christmas hope in tough times. Merry Christmas to all of our beautiful listeners. Reach out if you need a friend. Birthday-cast

Hey friends, we are celebrating J's birthday this week and we've chosen to share it with you - a relaxed episode where we look at weird lyrics in songs pt 2 and strange vocal inflections that probably only we notice. Shout out to our content creator of the week, Finn McKenty for inspiring our content in a way he probably never expected. Come get bloated with us as we listen to Meatloaf and riff with Shania on her two different versions of "that don't impress me much", where she becomes increasingly less impressed. Crazy cowbell shenanigans with Britney, weird vocal runs with Christina Aguilera, and missing bridges with Backstreet Boys. Come on in and learn how to be a considerate lover with us…apparently. Britpop

Britpop

Hey arrr kids! This week we're taking you back to the mid 90's when the UK was hooked on a little thing called britpop. So grab your bucket hats (they're back in fashion you know) and come journey with us as we comment on various incoherent britpop documentaries. We have conversations surrounding the iconic artists of the era: blur, Oasis, Suede, Supergrass, Pulp and many more. Actually perhaps some less iconic artists too...Menswe@r anyone? We look at how the genre was heavily influenced by the issues surrounding the British class system and politics and see how our opinions on the blur v Oasis battle have changed with the passage of time. Anyway, here's Wonderwall... Hello there, the angels from our nightmares. This week we are continuing the blink journey into their most creative and swoopy haired era, the Untitled album (2003). We watch the MTV Launch documentary following the creative process of the album and do some deep dives on the artistic nuances on this masterpiece. Did 'I Miss You' cause an entire generation to dye their hair black, swoop their fringe and pierce their lip? Most likely. Hey friends! We're back for season 3. This week we interview someone from inside the local band scene in Glasgow (and Dumbarton) for the past 20 years, a real 'Rock 'n' Roll Star', who also happens to be my brother. He shares stories about the music that inspired him to pick up a guitar (now bass), stories from life on the road in his bands The Haze and Holy Pistol Club, and what it was like being part of a local band scene in the 00's. Listen to find out what happened to Noel Gallagher's towel, antics on a Mötley Crüe tour bus and a failed attempt at returning a tambourine and many more ridiculous stories from inside the music industry. Holy Pistol Club are hopefully going to be returning to a gig venue near you soon. And until then they're available on Spotify just like us. Stay tuned. Hey friends! This week we discuss artists/gig experiences that touched our souls in ways no one else could. Julie discusses her deep, biased unapologetic love of the super talented Owen Pallett. Why play a violin with a bow when you can blow through it? Free Britney and respect Mark.

Free Britney and respect Mark.

Hey friends! We're back refreshed after a lil' break and while we were gone some things happened in the world. Things that we felt we'd like to and should talk about. Firstly, we discuss the latest developments in the Britney Spears conservatorship honestly and openly and sensitively as always. Which then leads us into the horrible mucky, innards of the pop machine once more. Why are we obsessed with making narratives out of people we don't know's lives? Turns out we're all in a massive conservatorship with the pop machine and J and I unapologetically will not stop coming for it. Celebrities that open their lives up to us, willingly or unwillingly, all pay a price. Which leads us on to a recent development close to my, and now J's heart, Mark Hoppus' recent public announcement of his cancer diagnosis/treatment. We talk about the uncomfortable questions some of his twitch stream fans asked on his latest stream regarding this and we get a bit angry and protective over Mark and we won't apologise for it. Just let him do his NY times crossword in peace please. Lastly, we both went slightly mad and watched old clips from the Masked Magician. So as some light comic relief after all that enjoy our commentary on the sexual innuendo laden, hidden wires riddled Masked Magician 20 years on. Hamilton: Part 2

Hi guys! Welcome back to part 2 and it's time skip time! J and I are joined by J's good friend Sarah Templeton, a hard-core Hamilfan and defender of the second act being supreme. J sheds tears over the emotional second act while Sarah and I remain dry eyed. Sarah starts a defend 'Dear Theodosia' movement almost instantly and from there we delve into the complexities of the second act. Hamilton: Part 1

Al-ex-an-d-er we are meant to be....Welcome Hamilfans and those who have watched it once (me) or never! We're all big musical fans here and there's no better way to start than by discussing the cultural phenomenon of Hamilton. We are joined by a beautiful Hamilfan, my gorgeous friend, Courtney as we delve into the first half of Hamilton. We discuss why we are all helpless to fall in love with Hamilton like Eliza herself. We then move onto the plethora of characters and the complexity of the raps that a sing-along bouncing ball could never compete with. Regardless of how you feel about Hamilton there is no denying that Lin Manuel Miranda created something that exploded into a historical pop culture moment possibly changing the face of musical theatre forever. Hamilton and I are big phat fantasists, J discusses her controversial music low point and Courtney is horrified by Alexander's eyes. Come on in we are not giving away our shots! Nonsense Song Lyrics

Hey friends! This week we discuss those song lyrics that make you pause for a second and go "...wait...what?" Welcome to nonsense lyrics. We take a deep dive into: Carly Simon singing about broken kitchen appliances. Bruno Mars winching folk with their eyes open WHY are they open? J getting frustrated with pop culture listing of things that are only relevant for 2 minutes (looking at you LFO and O-Town) but then gives a free pass to the wonderful Barenaked Ladies and The Bloodhound Gang. Underappreciated albums feat. Good Charlotte and Midlake

Underappreciated albums feat. Good Charlotte and Midlake

Hey friends! This week we take you on a little trip to underappreciated album city. We are going to give some love to albums that got did dirty at the time of release by fans and critics alike but now, with the passage of time, are viewed in a more positive light. First stop I take you on a chaotic spin around Good Charlotte's 'Good Morning Revival'. After their earlier pop-punk efforts this weird dance pop album wasn't received well by many. It was, however, received very well by me. Moving on to the second stop J takes us on a beautiful far more coherent tour around Midlake's 'Antiphon'. She gives an open and honest outpouring of love for Midlake and speaks sensitively about changes in the band that resulted in the very different 4th album Antiphon. Music and we as people are constantly in flux and our opinions constantly change over time. There are many misunderstood albums that deserve more love than what they received and J and I give all the love we can to Good Charlotte and Midlake here. Come join the cathartic earnestness y'all. All aboard the nostalgia train friends! Next stop is iconic TV theme tunes from J and I's (and probably most of yours too) pasts. We kick things off with a little TV show quiz (play along if you dare). then J steers us into the often unsuccessful territory of long-running tv show theme tune revamps/reimaginings. Let me take you on a tour of 90's/00's UK after school classics for those only blessed with cbbc/citv and no access to cable. I am left with only despair at not owning a helicopter or enough salt to make a big art attack in the style of Neil Buchanan in my back garden. J shares her classic 80's childhood favourites The Raccoons (DNA test - inconclusive), Duck Tales (the intro clips being used appearing in the actual show - unsolved) and Knightmare (CG dragon hands appearing to save children from falling down a chasm to their death - Unconfirmed). Then we finish off by sharing with you a typical weekend of TV in the 90's/00's Duffy household. Expect Buffy, (pre and post watershed with extra vampire dust) Big Break (did anyone who watched it actually play snooker?) Having a 'lorra lorra' laughs with Cilla on Blind Date and we finish by looking to the stars (Academy) with Stargate-SG1 Sundays on T4. You've now reached your final destination of unmissable 90's/00's TV nostalgia that has all but disappeared thanks to streaming services...that also allow you to listen to us... blink-182 - the story continues

Hey friends! That's right people I'm dragging you into blink hell again for 2 hours. This time we cover the Take Off Your Pants and Jacket era (2000-2002). Things descend into drunken chaos (blink would be proud) as J and I raise our gins (audible ice clinking) to the blink boys once again. Join us as we discuss how adorable, authentic and chaotic the band are on numerous early 00's MTV documentaries/interviews. On the 'Road Home' J gets impregnated by Tom and I fall deeper into a 'flat abyss' of love with Mark's self deprecation. Listen in real time as J was today years old before discovering the rude "pun" of the TOYPAJ album title. We then look back with love and bitter-sweet nostalgia on the last time everything was beautiful and innocent between the boys. The cracks between ToMark begin to appear as the coinciding birth of Boxcar Racer and the events of 9/11 shake the foundations within the band and the world...TBC... Keith Green's Legacy: Spiritual seekers and Christian Punks

Hey friends, (Christians and non-christians alike) welcome to this week's service where J and I discuss our experiences with Christian (crietsen) music. J shares the beautiful story of Keith And Melody Green. Two wonderful people who opened their hearts and homes to those in need and Jesus himself in the 1970's. Even for me (an ex-catholic and current atheist) their story is one of endless inspiration on navigating the human experience. We then take you on a journey through some Christian rock bands I discovered in my mid- teens through YouTube AMV multi-ship videos including Breaking Benjamin, Red and Falling Up. Then we move on to a topic I'm never far away from: pop-punk. We take a look at MxPx in particular and their shaky transition into more secular music captured in an iconic MTV show. So come on in take a pew (or don't because like you don't need to practice or even have a faith to be welcome here) and explore the trappings the label "Christian music" can bring and celebrate the life and legacy of Keith Green. Conspiracy Theories

Conspiracy Theories

We're back! (Even though we barely left) Did you miss us? We don't care because we missed you and each other so we're back to infect the airwaves again. This week, The truth is out there and J and I make a (failed) attempt to find it. From the macabre to the ridiculous we discuss music personality conspiracy theories. We try to be non exploitative and respectful but the shift in tones are handled with all the subtlety of a sledge hammer (on my part). J gives us a run down of music conspiracies from a BBC article full of puns on faked deaths and lizard people. I explain how "Paul is dead" from a Rolling Stone article and we go through a tour of local authority grave digger uniforms en route. Standard for us. We discuss Selena Gomez' black market kidney, Hollywod being hooked on adrenochrome and Tom Delonge's search for aliens. The truth is out there but you probably won't find it here but when you're having this much fun who really cares? The Kerrang Sessions - The Final Part

The Kerrang Sessions - The Final Part

It's the end of the K! Sessions. You may all heave a collective sigh of relief but we're sad to say goodbye. An absolute plethora of tech issues (on my part) plague this cursed episode and I can only apologise for the audio quality but I don't want to cause I like to sound like a D.I.Y punk band recording in the basement. We read an article on Foo Fighter's 'Wasting Light' which J has a personal affinity with. This album was probably written while Dave was "taking the bins oot" or "cleaning his hoover" most likely. We divulge our completely unwarranted distrust of Josh Holme and Snoop Dogg/Frank Sinatra respectively. Then we move onto songs about drinking and alcohol to celebrate the end of the K-Files in a chaotic messy sesh with whitey and demonic sound quality all over the shop. We're coming for the Avocado toast hipster haters as well. J & N xoxo

The Kerrang Sessions - Part 4

The Kerrang Sessions - Part 4

Back again for more torture I see? Welcome to the K! Sessions part 4 in this episode I hop onto Kerrang's radio site and read an article about metal covers of ABBA songs. J and I both love a bit of ABBA and are luke warm at best with regards to metal in general (sorry not sorry). Will this article change our minds? In short, not really, but boy do we have fun along the way. Step inside to hear my pitiful attempt at "screamo" vocals, repetitive guitar tones I dislike after 0.5 seconds and why oh why is everything in a minor key? Light at the end of the tunnel however is provided by two fans who give us way better recommendations than the actual article. Great. Please give us, give us, give us your "love" after midnight (or in J's case at a respectable hour pre-chamomile tea) and slide into the DMs with your thoughts and opinions. J & N xoxo

The Kerrang Sessions - Part 3

The Kerrang Sessions - Part 3

Here we go again...Kerrang! Files part 3. This episode we explore facts about Dave Grohl...some of which cause me to have a minor existential crisis. Then I discuss the 'war on emo',an insane moment in time where The Daily Mail basically told the parents of any kids that listened to MCR that they should be very worried...*eye roll intensifies*. The latter article discusses the death of Sophie Lancaster and there are some heavier issues raised throughout. J and I hopefully navigate these issues with the respect they deserve. J & N xoxo

The Kerrang Sessions - Part 2

The Kerrang Sessions - Part 2

Back again for the chaotic and largely plotless Kerrang! Session sequel. As most sequels go (bar a few shining examples) this one falls into the abyss rather quickly and we wouldn't have it any other way. We start by addressing the strange music choices on Clyde 1 for the passing of Prince Phillip and from this point it quickly slides down a slippery McPhilly Cheese Steak lined slope. In this session I read an article on underrated 90's albums and we then move onto 90's movie cameos made by bands. These articles provide scaffolding that we desperately try to cling to whilst discussing much more important issues as J's painting intensifies furiously. J savagely damns people to die in holes. Frank Carter or Frank Turner? We're unsure tbh but both are quite bad. I get confused between two films called Jack Frost and the iconic alcoholic beverage Frosty Jack's. And *plot spoiler* we finally reveal the origins of the 'ghost duplicate Mark' I'm going to have tattooed on my body in 190 episodes. You just had to be there guys. So be here with us please as we descend further into insanity. J & N xoxo

The Kerrang Sessions Part 1

Do you have the time? To listen to us whine? No? Good. Anyway here's a mini-series no one probably wanted: the K-Files 8f you will. Join us in the insanity as I read out Kerrang! articles for J while she paints her bedroom and reacts to said article from up a 7ft ladder. In part 1 we discuss the most iconic pop punk songs of all time (apparently) according to Kerrang. Also J gives us a horrifyingly hilarious insight into her Spam mail. Yikes. J & N xoxo

Sequels are usually weaker? Not the case here! Welcome to the best of season 1 part deux. We relive the best bits of episodes 8-10 and give you brand new content too! Come peek behind the curtain into our bigger, longer and uncut lives. Prepare the romantic scented candles and holy water as we read some erotic blink-182 slash fiction. You thought our relationship with blink-182 and each other was intimate before huh? Wrong again. To calm yourself down after steamy ToMark goodness we listen to some songs on 0.5 (the best speed there is). Including but not exclusive to: black eyed peas, blink-182 and glockenspiel ft. The Prodigy (warning: after hearing this, playing songs at normal speed will ALL sound jobby now). Sorry not sorry. And if you’re a loyal listener (please reach out and we will have a well deserved drink together in a post COVID world) it’s a fun way to reminisce with us over the course of our journey so far. Series Finale - Queer Culture: A Conversation Between Friends

Hey friends! This week we are honoured to be joined by our friend Lewis Creechan as we celebrate queer culture and the end of season 1. Lewis talks so openly and beautifully about the amazing strong female artists that defined his own queer experiences. His journey includes: an adorable awakening via Shania Twain's 'Man I Feel Like A Woman', becoming a 'Lil monster' through the iconic Lady Gaga, not being able to get Kylie out of his head and finally falling in love with the tumblr poster girls Marina and the Diamonds and Lana Del Rey. Episode 9 - Dance Classics

Hey friends! It's been a while since we've had a chance to go clubbing so we're bringing the club to you! J takes us on a game of "name that tune" with a side of wacky 90s dance mayhem featuring a Windows Movie Maker lyric video. The host at the time was Ed McMahon. Diane Sawyer was the woman who let Britney know during an interview that someone wanted to shoot her. (The fact alone that I just typed that sentence depresses me beyond belief). “Family Fortunes goes to hell” was in fact a show called Family Feud. Go figure. Heat Magazine has had many editors since it’s inception in 1999. Boyd Hilton was never one of them. Always an entertainment critic, Julie.
