184. Fitness Frustration: 5 Reasons You're Not Making Progress and How to Fix Them

In this episode, I dive into the top 5 fitness fails that keep people from achieving their health and wellness goals. If you've ever found yourself stuck in a rut or struggling to make progress, chances are you've fallen into one or more of these traps. But don't worry, we'll not only identify the problems but also provide you with actionable solutions to get back on track.

The 5 fitness fails we'll discuss are:

  1. Going big and trying to change everything at once
  2. Hoping for the best without a tailored plan
  3. Doing it alone without support or accountability
  4. Taking things away instead of adding healthy habits
  5. Ignoring the role of mindset and inner thoughts/feelings

We'll explore why each of these approaches doesn't work and what you can do instead to set yourself up for success. You'll learn the importance of focusing on small, high-impact habits, tracking your actions, assessing your progress, and reflecting regularly. We'll also discuss the power of getting support and accountability from others and the benefits of progressively adding healthy things to your life before trying to remove unhealthy ones.

One of the most critical factors in achieving lasting fitness success is understanding the role of your mindset. We'll talk about how to notice and work on your thoughts, feelings, and inner dialogue to create a positive, growth-oriented mindset that supports your goals.

By the end of this episode, you'll have a clear understanding of what not to do and, more importantly, what strategies to implement to overcome these common fitness pitfalls. You'll be empowered to break free from the cycle of frustration and finally start making consistent progress towards your health and fitness dreams.

So, if you're ready to stop sabotaging your fitness goals and start taking control of your journey, this episode is for you. Let's dive in!

166. Stephen Box—Stop Trying to Do It All, Do This Instead

Here's my interview with Stephen Box, men's health coach and host of the Unshakable Habits Podcast.

After years struggling with his weight and health while working a demanding retail management job, Stephen had a "lightbulb moment" when he didn't recognize himself on his store's security footage. This culmination of dissatisfaction finally pushed Stephen to make lifestyle changes.

  • Stephen lost an initial 40 pounds while still eating fast food daily, just making smarter menu choices. He focused less on the scale and more on tangible progress like increasing his strength and endurance. An ill-fitting souvenir t-shirt that Stephen vowed to someday fit into was his main benchmark for success.
  • All-or-nothing thinking plagues many men trying to get healthy. We equate worth with the hustle and assume we need drastic measures for rapid results. Stephen coaches guys to take "dialed" action instead. A flexible, consistent 5-7 on the dial yields progress without burnout.
  • Mindset, relationships and environment hugely impact health gains. After creating a vision for his best life, Stephen helps clients shape supportive connections and spaces. He concludes: “Healthy isn’t a certain look. Healthy is a mindset.”
