Ep.50 What's Your Strategic Narrative? Guest Guillaume Wiatr. Metahelm Strategic Consulting. Seattle, WA

If you are deciding how to position your business in the market, set your organizational values or plan a vision, you may need to find your Strategic Narrative.

Take my free High-Performance Leader Self-Assessment.

Take Guillaume Wiatr's free Strategic Narrative Self Assessment.

Guillaume Waitr was in the process of publishing one of his highly successful The Next Narrative blogs when he came across some mental dissension when comparing the terms story and narrative. After reflecting on this, Guillaume was hit with a revelation. These two terms were used interchangeably in business and psychology constantly but were actually different. The story has a beginning, middle and end like a movie, while a narrative is the ongoing collection of beliefs and perspectives behind many interconnected stories. Guillaume delved into narrative deeper and discovered that each business has it’s own narrative and through identifying and aligning it, business can develop their own Strategic Narrative.

Celebrating 50 episodes and our 3rd season with you!

Listen to this podcast episode with Guillaume Wiatr, originally from France, now based in Seattle.

I'm flying high right now because I was pretty vulnerable in this episode. We used me as an example. Guillaume is a creator of Strategic Narrative, the business strategy consulting and coaching methodology for entrepreneurial leaders and professional service firms.

He looks young, but for like 30 years he's worked with some big, big consulting firms. He's founded several companies. He's worked with organizations like Microsoft and the Gates Foundation, AIG.

He walked me through some of his methodologies as I'm exploring this inflection point that I'm in my career and my business. We took a gamble by using me as the example and I have a feeling it's going to resonate with you the listener.

We jump right into what we mean by Strategic Narrative, his trademark methodology.

If you're wondering where you're at in positioning your company or your team's vision and your strategy, this was super helpful for me. This is free advice, some coaching, and a bit of consulting. Enjoy.

Guillaume explained strategic narrative is a system of interconnected stories that shape one's mindset, language, and actions to achieve goals more efficiently.

Guillaume emphasized building an authentic narrative from the inside-out to avoid distractions, focus on core values, and efficiently reach one's desired future through small consistent actions.

Nate aims to scale their impact by growing a team of coaches to serve more leaders, as they successfully did in their hockey development business, moving from sole proprietor to leader.

Guillaume stressed developing one's authentic expertise through publishing seeds of ideas continuously to clarify perspective for differentiated impact, like coaching from experience.

Guillaume suggested prototyping ideas quickly through publishing to build confidence in one's message and overcome doubts, focusing outward on small actions over big plans.

Guillaume recommended cultivating ideas through presence like walks, then publishing seeds immediately online to develop expertise iteratively through feedback in a low-risk yet impactful way.

"So anyway, the planes couldn't fly, so I'm stuck in New Delhi. Right? I happened to be stuck in the same hotel in the Dalai Lama, which I didn't know. So I'm in the lobby and suddenly the elevator doors open. And who comes out? Is the Dalai Lama?

So, then there is, I don't know, 15 or 20 people that run to bow and reverse him and greet him and all that.

So I thought, okay, I had just got to spend 2 weeks with him right?I'm not going to be greedy. I went on some steps and I was higher than the people so I could look at him from a higher point. And he left the lobby and on the way out, Nathan.

He suddenly stops, turned towards me with an extraordinary intentionality. And our eyes lock. I don't know how long it lasted because time disappeared, everybody disappeared, everything disappeared...."

Hey listeners, welcome to Leading with Curiosity. My guest today is Tony Martignetti. Tony's in Canton, Massachusetts is a PCC coach with the International Coach Federation and learned a long time ago that values and our daily work need to be aligned.

By widening his vision to see the new opportunity he was able to then narrow his focus to something new that was more in his calling from biotech financial analyst to PCC coach and leadership development facilitator.

In this interview, we explore the use of metaphor leading from behind horse leadership of all things. We explore the value of deep personal connection and navigating change as a leader and how to engage the team in navigating that change.

As always, I learned a lot. I hope you do too. Here's Tony Martignetti on Leading with Curiosity. Enjoy....

Listeners, you've probably heard me say…”this conversation was fun, inviting you to listen. But today with Lisa Sansom, I swear we thread elements of all the episodes that have preceded this one into this one conversation.

Lisa is a professional certified coach with the ICF and has been for a long time. She has an MBA.

She has a master's in applied positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, which is where we spend most of our time talking about that thread between coaching with that layer of positive psychology on it. If you lead people, if you aspire to be a leader, if you are at all curious about the value of coaching and what high performance leadership means with a positive view that will actually change your life personally, as well as professionally. Honestly, this is the conversation. I was introduced to Lisa by episode 22's Eileen Schaeffer. Episode 22 was the number one listened to episode in all of 2022. So I think we have two friends competing for the title here in 2023. With no further adieu, the balance and the layering and the correlations between positive psychology and executive coaching, Lisa Sansom.

Enjoy.

 - Mark Carpenter (Master Storytelling)

Thank you so much, Nate. I'm just thrilled to be here with you. As I've listened to a couple of the episodes of your podcast, there's a couple of things that really resonate with me.

The first is in that intro that everybody just heard about how the command and control style of leadership is dead.

When I first heard that on your podcast, I was jumping up and down for joy. And other people see that the same way that I do.

And the other statement is gonna be on the outro that everybody will hear in a little while. And that is about how our brains behave differently when they're invited or encouraged to think rather than told to listen.

And that resonates with my heart because I totally believe that. And that's why I'm in the world that I'm in and teaching people how to use storytelling as a way to teach, lead, and inspire, because that's what's gonna encourage people to think.

And it gets us past that command and control style of leadership. So thank you for the work that you're doing and for setting the foundation that I think is fantastic.

@12:28 - Nate Leslie (nateleslie.ca)

Thanks, Mark, your master storytelling, your book, I can see the cover over your shoulder. We'll link to it in the show notes.

I see this light bulb exploding. Let's go there right off the hop here. The difference between receiving instruction or receiving info from a document or in a course to turning it into a story, what is so compelling for you about it?

@12:51 - Mark Carpenter (Master Storytelling)

And one thing you can't see from this distance with the cover of the book is that little light bulb there.

It's a bunch of people.

@12:58 - Nate Leslie (nateleslie.ca)

It's all made up of little people.

@13:00 - Mark Carpenter (Master Storytelling)

And so it really ties into how our brains work and how our brains think. That idea of inviting people to think rather than telling them to listen, story will do that, think about this, have you been around little children very much, you ever been around like a toddler, an entire career of it for a while?

@12:08 - Nate Leslie (nateleslie.ca)

When you think about your book, living on purpose, leadership and executive coaching, whose lives do you think will be impacted most, who are going to listen to this conversation today?

@12:24 - Amy Wong (alwaysonpurpose.com)

Yeah, great question. So the book really has been written for and who's going to benefit from this conversation is the individual who really is committed to doing well in the world and whether that's by an external standard, internal standard.

It's that, you know, they're relatively ambitious. They're relatively committed. They do the work to to quote unquote thrive. And really who this book is written for is for all the folks that have done it, quote unquote, right?

And still feel totally unfulfilled. Or you can look at your life on paper and say, wow, I have no reason to be quote unquote unhappy, but yet there's something missing.

And it's definitely for the individual that recognizes it's not going to be doing more of the same. I just don't know what to do different.

And so who's going to really benefit from our conversation today is the individual who feels that way. It's like, gosh, I'm so close to genuine inner peace.

And I know I'm getting in my own way. I get that it's not going to be a bigger title.

I get that it's not going to be more money, even though I swear to God, my head is convincing me that's the case.

I just don't know what it is. And so that's what I think people have to look forward to is what is that and how do we have to come back?

Intro Transcript:

A letter to the Intrepid entrepreneur:

I see you working hard all day every day to bring your dreams to life, to voting countless hours to build your business, spending way too much money on the right course, the right program, the right coach, anything that might streamline your path to your dream.

I see you posting on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram, appearing on guest blogs and podcasts, creating your content, sharing your story, perfecting your elevator pitch, working out the kinks in your about page, learning the ins and outs of copy that converts and sales pages that sell.

I see you doing all the right things, checking all the boxes, showing up, diving in, giving it your all and then some.

Your drive, your devotion, and your ambition are practically tangible. I see you plagued with self doubt, uncertain whether you have what it takes to make this entrepreneurial thing work.

mistakes, vacillating between a mindset of abundance and opportunity, and one of anxiety and self condemnation, desperately trying to brave the storms in your business and your life as the winds swirl and the rain pours.

I see you. I see you because I am you. I know all too well what it's like to have a dream, a passion, a desire for something great.

When I began my coaching business, I wanted to change the world by connecting with mindful, energized, motivated people who wanted to love their work and their lives.

I saw myself serving people powerfully and changing lives. Then shortly after I began my vision clouded. These are just a few words in the letter to the intrepid entrepreneur from my guest today, former psychotherapist and social worker, now executive coach working with entrepreneurs, Lee Shea McDonough, author of Act on Your Business. This is a great conversation where we explore the intersection between therapy and coaching, entrepreneurship, and values leading the decisions that we make as entrepreneurs.

Once again, I love the conversation. I hope you do too. Thanks for listening.

About this episode:

This conversation was great. you know. It started heavy in one thousand nine hundred six Ira bombing in Manchester, England flattened the downtown.

My guest. Lisa Morton, at the time, was just starting a business in public relations and was involved in building up the city and giving it a new identity and helping cast a vision for a brighter future, which now is unrecognizable in downtown Manchester from only twenty five years ago.

After that terrible attack, the theme that runs through this conversation with Lisa is around the importance of personal values, living those values, defining them within sight of your organization in creating a culture based on behaviors that are accepted

Eliminating the behaviors that are not accepted that don't align with the values. I learned a ton. It's personal. It's raw.

There's a ton of storytelling and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did recording it. This is Lisa Morton, CEO and founder of Roland Dransfield in Manchester, England public relations firm.

About Lisa:

25 years ago, it became apparent to Lisa that the only way to work somewhere that had suitable goals and values as an enterprise was to start it herself. Almost immediately, her talent for creating relationships became apparent when Manchester suffered a devastating bombing. Lisa got involved heavily in rebuilding the city centre and over the years has played a large part in helping to regenerate neglected parts of the city centre to create the new key “pillar” neighborhoods that make up the city. As a result, Lisa has been at the forefront of the response to crises in her community,

Lisa Morton is the CEO and founder of Roland Dransfield, one of the most established communications agencies in Manchester, England. For the last 24 years, Lisa has worked to forge meaningful, lasting business relationships that create both business growth and social impact alongside her team of award-winning strategists, journalists, creatives, digital, and social media specialists. Now with a London office and a partnership with an LA-based agency, of which the founder is a former Roland Dransfield team member, Lisa is continuing to expand Roland Dransfield and explore new paths for growth.

Lisa’s commitment to purpose-driven work is exemplified by Roland Dransfield’s “We Built This City” podcast, a podcast series which hears from Mancunians, born, bred and adopted, who put the heart into Greater Manchester. The podcast has been nominated for Best Business Podcast by the prestigious British Podcast Awards and celebrates stories of determination, loyalty, and diversity across culture, arts, politics, sport, music and business. Roland Dransfield’s other recent award wins include PR & Marketing Agency of the Year, Marketing Personality of the Year (Downtown in Business), Best PR/Social Agency Campaign (MPA), Small PR Agency of the Year (MPA), PR Agency of the Year (MPA) and Best PR Agency (The Talk of Manchester). They are currently shortlisted for Prolific North Best PR Agency and Best Digital Campaign and Best Social Impact Award 2020 (Downtown in Business), among others.

Hi listeners Welcome to Leading with Curiosity. My guest today, Ira Wolfe, is a thought leader in the future of work. He is a top five global thought leader on HR, TEDx speaker, and an HR influencer. We explore the connection between a Bruce Lee quote and growth mindset. We learn the number one skill that will be required in today's workplace in these crazy ‘sort of post pandemic’ times. I know, like always I'm gonna have to go have to have a guy like Ira on the show again, so much we could have explored and didn't get to. I hope you enjoy the episode as much as I did recording.

Nate Leslie 1:02

You know, I've been doing a lot of research and you are a leader, a thought leader around the future of work adaptability. In a post pandemic era, modern leadership in 2022. What are you thinking about these days around the future of work in these times that we're living in?

Ira Wolfe 1:21

I think a lot about it for very obvious reasons. We're living in what I call the never normal and the never normal is pretty it's a pretty good description of where we are. It started with VUCA. I don't know if your listeners may or may not be familiar with that book. It's been around for about 40 years. It started with Warren Bennis in the 1980s. He was one of my favorite thought leaders on leadership. And he talked about what the future was going to be, how you needed to prepare leaders and develop leaders, which I know is what you do. And he talked about a world that would be volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. And I can't think of a better acronym than VUCA to describe the world we live in now. But especially in 2020, volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous and everyday we continue to live there. So basically, having studied that, that being a passion of mine for the last, well, I've always liked studying change, but especially over the last 20 years when I was introduced to that i It's my here's my time, this is the time to live in, you know for that and people are really struggling. I mean, you can tell from that from stress and burnout and well being and people changing jobs and what the work environment is there's so much so much going on. So, again, we need to talk about how we prepare? How do we help people adapt better?

Nate Leslie 2:52

Yes, I do that every day. Yeah, yeah. Let's go there. Gosh, when you think about VUCA being from the 80s and now how uncertain and ambiguous. This next chapter in our lives is you know, helping people be adaptive. You've talked about the adaptability quotient. What do you want to share with that?

I learned a ton. It was a fun conversation. I got a lot out of it personally and really appreciate your time.

Transcript Intro:

@08:11 - Nate Leslie (nateleslie.ca)

When we were talking before we hit record here, we were getting into what it is that brought us together on this episode.

I have a feeling my wife might come home later today and she'll walk in the door and I'm going to say, "Guess what, honey, the day has finally come. I'm starting the book because Julie convinced me!" because I just gained so much from it.

So Julie we're going to explore using the writing of a book to help promote a business, an idea to build a business around credibility, credibility in the marketplace.

I'm really excited about where it's going to go. Why don't we start with a simple question like what is book launchers all about?

@08:57 - Julie Broad | Book Launchers (Book Launchers)

Yeah. So I started book launchers five years. Ago actually to help people grow or write a book that will grow their brand, grow their business.

And the reason was because I had self published two books and I found a knowing who to hire and in what order was quite challenging and how do you know who's good and all the pieces but b and even more importantly was nobody was thinking about marketing until I got to the very end and I hired a PR company and then they're thinking about marketing.

What you need is somebody who rates from the very beginning goes, okay, what are you trying to do with this book and how are we going to sell it when you're done and positions the book at every step.

And that's why I created Book Launchers. We are full service and we start with marketing in mind from the very beginning and then at the very end we have a team that will be alongside you, helping you, pitch you to media, speaking engagements, live appearances, running ads, getting bookstores and libraries and all the full thing so everything a traditional publisher would do and then some but you keep going all rights and royalties.

“You are the Weather”

  • Relationships are our currency. We bank them. Once in a while we need to make a withdrawal (hard conversations)
  • Why did you choose to lead?
  • Mentor - What does ‘good’ look like?
  • Listen well, listen deeply.
  • Lead through service, a learners mindset, and be empathy focused.
  • In 2022 we all have ‘stuff’ going on. How do we control our weather so that we have sunny days inside the building for our kids? - Kindness, Courage.
  • Leader - What are you Willing to Address?
  • Relationships are the foundation of leadership. We bank trust and vulnerability. Sometimes we need to take small withdrawals from the bank to have difficult conversations.

About Monday Musings

www.mondaymusings.org

"I began blogging years ago sending my thoughts (Musings) out to my School faculty in an attempt to share my vision, and to open up the lines of communication. They’ve become somewhat of an expectation over the last many years, and it’s fair to say that they’ve morphed into opportunities for me to address issues, share my educational fairytale, and to celebrate accomplishments with the surrounding school community, and indeed the world. They’ve also helped me “sharpen the saw” so to speak, as the professional discourse that stems from these posts has allowed me to share ideas and issues with educational leaders from around the globe. I am a featured blogger for THE INTERNATIONAL EDUCATOR (TIE online), and you can follow my posts there as well.  I’m also an adjunct professor for Endicott College, teaching in their Masters Degree leadership program in Madrid and Prague every summer.

Essentially, the Musings are my attempt to stay current, as well as a forum to gain valuable feedback on how to turn a school from good to great. It’s an on-going process…over 250 posts and counting and still so much to learn."

Hi curious listeners. Thanks for listening to this episode. My conversation today is with a very bright and experienced leadership coach, Jennifer Chapman, from Indianapolis, Indiana. She studied coaching at Georgetown University and is a member of the International Coach Federation.

This conversation today took a little turn about five or six minutes in and we just stayed down that path around group coaching, how to actually engage a group of leaders in this coaching process. They could be internal from the same one organization, or independent organizations. I think it was a really great insight for people to wonder, “what is an entry point into this? What could I do with members of my team after they've done a training program to really keep the learning going at a cost effective way?” We also explored the work that she does with an audience that is in the science, technology engineering, and finance industries, where coaching can have a huge impact breaking down some barriers and stereotypes are the communication and leadership styles in those industries.

It was a pleasure. There's a chance to connect with her and get some free tools at the end of it to get the most out of your learning resources. If you're like me, you're always into something listening, learning if you're listening to this right now. You're one of us! I hope you enjoyed this conversation as much as I did. Here is Jennifer Chapman.

Would you like to rekindle your curiosity? Perhaps, you’d like to explore why magnificent leaders are master questioners. You only have one life to live. One is enough when you lead from within. Imagine a professional woman, who was sent to finishing school (3 times...but that’s a different story), lives on 20 rural acres with a variety of pets, and simultaneously improves the world by teaching leaders to “relearn how to learn” and, as a result, evolve into their true potential. Pretty awesome, right?

Shawna Schuh is an innovative thought-leader who can help you unpack the pesky problems you encounter when you lead people. With a curious mind, herself, and a Master’s Certificate in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Shawna is exceptionally skilled in the art of uncovering leadership blind spots and catapulting leaders out of the leadership weeds.

Having worked with organizations like Nike and Columbia Sportswear to associations such as Fashion Group International and the National Speakers Association. Shawna shares a unique perspective so that the information and ideas she promotes stick and work. With two TEDx talks to her credit, as well as 3 decades of experience, you will be enlightened as well as entertained while shifting from the less stellar things most leaders do to focus only on what the best leaders do.

Ep.25 Can Wisdom be Taught? Guest Sophia McLean. Wisdom Teacher. Balearic Islands, Spain.

I'm joined in this episode by an incredibly intelligent and well spoken woman, Sophie McLean. She's calling in from Minorca, a tiny island of the coast of Barcelona, relocating from NYC's Upper East Side to write her second book. I took on the adventure of interviewing Sophie knowing that I'd really have to lean in to keep up! The deeper connections I've made to being present, a 'beginner's mind', and leadership have left me with a feeling of peace, in a currently chaotic world. By accepting the idea that we 'know almost nothing' is more freeing than I ever could have imagined.

About Sophia McLean

Born in Algeria, educated in Morocco and France, with a professional career in the USA and UK, Sophie has led an eventful life. She has been a helicopter pilot, a teacher, a designer, a relief worker, a war refugee, a CEO, and served as a United Nations representative on The Commission on the Status of Women’s Hunger Project. She has been shot at, shipwrecked, and widowed. She has lived on a farm, a boat, a penthouse, and in an ashram. As a wisdom teacher, Sophie has spent decades leading transformational seminars to over 80,000 people around the world, of all ethnicities, ages, religions and social backgrounds – all engaged with the universal existential questions of “Who and what am I?” and “What is my life about?”

Sophie McLean's mission is to contribute to the creation of a new culture for humankind; or the shift from Homo Sapiens to Homo Spiritus, as Dr. David Hawkins so beautifully wrote. Sophie's seminar and podcast topics span both human and metaphysical dimensions – exposing and deconstructing the automatic ego, consciousness, freedom, love, stress, anxiety, fear, relationships, health, sex, money, ownership, leadership, spirituality, creation and evolution, the feminine and the masculine, responsibility, and making an effective, actionable difference in the world.

Sophie engages people in a rigorous review of their life and a systematic questioning of their conclusions on the basis that without examining our network of ideas, beliefs, social and cultural judgments, and our assumptions about the world, those are transformed into constraints. Her interest is in the nature of what it means to be human. Sophie's book, The Elegance of Simplicity: A Wisdom Teacher's Epic Journey to Awareness, is a compelling, thought-provoking work of autobiographical fiction, one that communicates life-altering concepts proposing an effortless pathway to awareness. It’s a deeply authentic and dramatic story of self-discovery, about what is possible when you take responsibility, own your power, and become one with life. In Sophie McLean's life and work, she strives to bring elegance, worldly experience, grit, courage, and insight leading to revelation and transformation.

“I enjoyed my first job at Apple as supply/demand manager, but every morning I woke up to see what had gone wrong overnight (since all manufacturing was in China). I loved the problem solving, but I didn’t love the stress & constant fire drills.

I moved to finance and was promoted to Worldwide Director, which was my goal at the time. I was leading global projects, a key contributor to the company-wide financial forecasting process, & building a team from scratch. Great opportunity and great challenges, but my son was 2 at the time, and I was torn between more hours at work or more with my son and my wife.

I felt like I was failing in both places.

I was supposed to hire a manager to report to me at Apple, but instead I took that manager position, demoting myself. I loved the freedom to follow my life’s priorities - volunteering at my son’s school, enjoying evenings free of work - but I didn’t realize I had put myself into a dead-end job. I was there for 8 years. I knew there had to be a way to have both a meaningful job and a good life, but I didn't know how to find it. I felt stuck there for years before I got the help I needed to figure it out. That’s why I’m a coach - to help you find your version of meaningful work + a good life.”

Hello listeners. Thanks for tuning in. My guest today is Ilene Schaffer, the CEO of Silicon Valley Change. We met in a breakout group. When we connected I knew I needed to have her on this show. Silicon Valley Change is an organization of 80 Certified Executive Coaches, each with over 10 years experience coaching. They operate in seven different languages globally. They have grown far beyond Silicon Valley. They all also have training in Positive Psychology, which is taking off right now in the leadership space and for anyone who's curious about what that means, we explore the framework. It’s an evidence based and data driven approach to leadership which I think is really cool. We explore how this Great Resignation that's going on right now in organizations can instead become a Great Opportunity, starting with finding what is right about the people in your organization. She's really well spoken she has decades of coaching experience. If you're interested in this idea of strengths based leadership, positive psychology, and how to create opportunity from these challenging times, then I think this is the right episode for you. Thanks for tuning in. I appreciate you. Enjoy.

Ep.21 - Leadership is a Performance Art. Guest - Alain Hunkins. Thought Leader & Coach. New England, USA.

Hello curious listeners.

Leadership is a Performance Art. The people we lead haven't arrived until their voice is in the room. We need the people that we lead to be the protagonist in the story. These are just a couple of the mind expanding, brain exploding, easy to grasp, not commonly implemented ideas that today's guest Alain Hunkins, shares with our listeners.

With over 100'000 LinkedIn followers, Alain is the author of CRACKING THE LEADERSHIP CODE: Three Secrets to Building Strong Leaders (Wiley, March 2020), which was endorsed by leadership luminaries Jim Kouzes, Barry Posner, and Marshall Goldsmith. A faculty member of Duke Corporate Education, Alain’s writing has been featured in Fast Company, Inc., Forbes, Chief Executive, Chief Learning Officer, and Business Insider.

Alain has worked with companies like Walmart, Pfizer, Citi Group, GE, State Farm Insurance, IBM, Microsoft, and grew up in New York City so we had some some good laughs about my time in living New York. He’s a really humble, articulate and passionate leadership development facilitator and coach. By facilitator, he gleans the Latin root word ‘facile’, like in French, means ‘easy’. In leadership, we need to help people make things easier. Easier to understand, easier to accomplish. Those are some of our obligations as leaders.

You've heard this before from me, I know I'm going to have him on again. I need to because we were just scratching the surface. Thank you to Todd Cherches from NYU (Episode 18), and previous guest Rob Salafia from MIT (Episode 13), two people that have led me in this path to connect with Alain today. Enjoy. Thanks for listening.

Ep.20 - Make S$#T Happen. Guest Traca Savadogo. Idea Strategist. Baja, Mexico

Hi curious people.  I have a pretty strong sense that what you are about to hear over the next half hour is going to take your ability to level up your ideas and scale them like you hadn't previously imagined. My guest Traca Savadogo, who I met through Episode 18’s Todd Cherches (NYU) in New York City, is a self proclaimed curious strategist who knows how to get shit done.

From figuring out how to get Anthony Bourdain to a dinner party with his film crew, to helping a chief marketing officer stay in a role to grow a company to a billion dollars. From her current home in Mexico we explore some pretty common sense ideas but we know that common sense is not always common practice. How to network, but what does that mean? We all know that networking is everything. But how do you expand that network in non competing industries to people that you can add value to that also can help you scale your ideas?

Ep.19 - Options are Power. Guest - Donna Peters, ICF Coach. Atlanta, GA

Options are Power

Hello listeners. My guest today caught my attention as a speaker at the International Coach Federation annual conference ‘Converge’ presenting the power and value of hosting a podcast. I knew I needed to interview her! Donna Peters is the host of "The Me-Suite" podcast. Power for the Life Minded. It was a finalist for both Best Business Podcast and People's Choice Award in 2020. It was a lot of fun just like all the others.

Donna spent 20 years as a management consultant. She's from Atlanta, Georgia, and we explore the difference between consulting and coaching. Between therapy and coaching, big moments in people's lives where coaching can and has played a role. What it is, what it isn't. She’s an award winning podcast host. And it was just a lot of fun. She runs Me-Suite, www.the-me-suite.com, a coaching company approaching life like a C suite executive runs an organization. We need to manage our lives and care about ourselves in the same kind of way. It was a ton of fun at one point that even flips where I suddenly realize I'm being interviewed, which was just awesome. We explored a whole bunch here and I hope you enjoy it. As I did recording it. As always, thanks for listening.

Hey listeners, welcome to Leaving with Curiosity, this is a very special episode. I knew when I wanted to interview my Father Bob Leslie, I couldn't do it in the first episode, and then Gosh episode after episode started clipping along and I got to squeeze him in. He's gonna start feeling left out! And we picked the perfect time to interview Bob, he lives back in Canada now after over 30 years in professional hockey, mostly in Switzerland and Germany. He's now a leadership development trainer, largely working out of Switzerland and Germany and throughout Europe but due to the pandemic he's been back in Canada, where he's now settled.

This week, he's in Switzerland, working with the St Gallen Management Institute with a number of their students and with 18 executives from 18 Different companies.   And so I caught up with him at a hotel in Davos, where I first drew a line in the sand in this shift that I was making a number of years ago I joined him there to observe what the heck he was doing and to learn more about it, and it's there that I really found executive coaching. That was the first step in this new journey that I'm on. So, Bob and I explore what he's up to in Switzerland this week, and some really practical examples of what three or four days with him looks like and the impact that it has on leaders. I hope you enjoy it. It was super fun and I'm really proud to be able to share this episode with you today.

Ep.13 - Who are you in the process of becoming? Guest Rob Salafia - Performing Artist, MIT Faculty Executive Coach, Author.

Hello listeners. My guest today was a joy to speak with. He's been a street performer, tap dancer, wire-walker (he can lay down and read on it), is a faculty Executive Coach at MIT, and has received praise on his new book from one of the most recognizable names in executive coaching, Marshall Goldsmith.

Rob Salafia is the author of ‘Leading From Your Best Self: Develop Executive Poise, Presence, and Influence to Maximize Your Potential’. Get it on Amazon here.

Rob Salafia has a background in performing arts, which we will hear about later. His clients include presidents of banks and support from his book come from Senior VP’s from some globally recognized organizations. Not to mention he was recommended to us by previous episode’s Ian McGregor, CEO of Skratch Labs.

He is an MIT Sloan Leadership Center Executive Coach and CEO of Protagonist Consulting.

Rob, I want to get this out in the open right off the hop. When I think about MIT, I think about that movie about card counting. Tell us more about MIT, and how a guy like you ended up there?!

Rob and I explore the the following, and more:
  1. Who are you in the process of becoming?
  2. The trap of the professional persona
  3. No story in your life is wasted.
  4. Show me what it looks like when you are on the top of your game.
  5. Vision. Strategy. Action.
  6. Executive Presence and Layers of Experience: Our practice of developing our executive presence can grow if we think of it as layers of experience. Consider the following, executive presence is: How others experience us. How others experience themselves when they are with us. The story they tell about us when we are gone.

Ep.8 - I'd be Dead without Coaching. Guest Dan Konigsberg - CEO/Founder at CampMinder

Ep.8 - I'd be Dead without Coaching. Guest Dan Konigsberg - CEO/Founder at CampMinder

Outside Magazine has voted Dan Konigsberg’s company CampMinder as one of the Top 50 places to work in the US 4 times. Their commitment to team member happiness and well being was highlighted in this past year’s award coming in at #11, amidst a pandemic lockdown. CampMinder runs extraordinary software and support for kids summer camps. CEO Dan Konigsberg founded the company while still in college in 2001.. I am a client of CampMinder through one of my businesses, the West Coast Hockey Prep Camp. The software, and the support we receive under Dan’s leadership has revolutionized our ability to execute a world class high performance summer camp and has more than doubled the value of our business.

I first came to know about Dan Konigsberg and his belief in the value of executive coaching after reading a post on CampMinder’s blog. It was October 2020 after a summer of shut down camps and huge revenue losses. Here is a quote from his article “Pushing Forward to Create a Brighter Future.”

“Rather than seeking a rescuer to solve my problem for me, I’ve learned a Coach can help me identify opportunities to create my own solution. In this Creator-Challenger-Coach triangle, I’m no longer focused on problems, but instead on desired outcomes. This leaves me feeling creative and empowered to work towards the goal I wish to achieve.”

In this interview we explore:
  • The origin story at CampMinder - Solving a pain point in college.
  • What makes CampMinder so special that it deserve’s Outside Magazine’s recognition
  • The Gift that was meeting Dan’s Executive Coach Steven Morrow
  • The value Dan places on receiving executive coaching, and why he’d be dead (and the company would have failed instead of returned 10X value on his investment in it.
  • Finding Core Values from within his best team members, rather than creating values and hiring for them.
  • The impact coaching has on the way he leads his team of 60.
