The Diagnosis and the Many Paths to Finding Balance and Healing with Louise Lubin, Ph.D.

Dr. Louise Lubin is a licensed clinical psychologist in Norfolk, Virginia who has practiced adult, marital, and family therapy for nearly forty years. With her focus on survivorship in chronic and life-threatening illnesses, she developed programs and a website “Many Paths to Healing” for hospital systems and physician groups to provide patients with the necessary tools to cope and manage the challenges of illness. A few highlights from the show:

1. Cancer demands that you learn how to take care of yourself, communicate, and ask for what you need. You must be assertive!

2. We have control over what we "think" is happening to us.

3. It is counterproductive to feel guilty about having cancer.

4. People need to take their cues from the patient.

5. Listen has the same letters as silent!

Visible Symptoms of Prostate Cancer and the Benefits of Being a Member of the 7 O'Clock Club with Barry Furey

Visible Symptoms of Prostate Cancer and the Benefits of Being a Member of the 7 O'Clock Club with Barry Furey

Barry Furey has been involved in public safety since 1970, having served as a fire officer in three states and a 9-1-1 director in four. Additionally, he has provided consulting services worldwide and is an award-winning author. At age 70, he spends most of his time as a dad of three children under eleven, the youngest born after his battle with prostate cancer.

A few highlights from the show:

1. Prostate cancer is known as a 'silent killer' due to not usually causing any symptoms until it has grown large enough to put pressure on the urethra. Typically, there is no discomfort in the very early stages of prostate cancer.

2. Many men's prostates get larger as they get older because of a non-cancerous condition called benign prostate enlargement.

3. Firefighters have been shown in meta-analyses to have an increased incidence of prostate cancer (PCa) compared with the general population.

A Seasoned Medical Oncologist Explains Why Cancer Still Sucks with David J. Stewart, MD, FRCPC

A Seasoned Medical Oncologist Explains Why Cancer Still Sucks with David J. Stewart, MD, FRCPC

Dr. David Stewart trained in medical oncology at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston from 1976 to 1978 and then joined the staff at MD Anderson. He returned to Ottawa Canada in 1980, moved back to MD Anderson in 2003, and then again moved back to Ottawa Canada in 2011 as a Professor of Medicine and Head of the Division of Medical Oncology. Since completing his term as a division head in 2019, he has continued to teach and practice oncology in Ottawa. He recently wrote the book A Short Primer on Why Cancer Still Sucks. It is intended for cancer patients, other members of the public, and non-oncology healthcare professionals.

A few highlights from the show:

1. The first reason that cancer still sucks is that it is everywhere. You can contract it no matter how healthy your lifestyle is or how pure your family history is.

2. A blood test such as a circulating tumor cell test detects cancer cells in your blood. The cells might be in the blood if they've broken away from where they started and are spreading to other parts of the body.

3. The US and Canadian healthcare systems each have strengths and weaknesses that help and hinder cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Two-Time Cancer Survivor and Cancer Whisperer Who Beat the Odds to Shine Brightly and Share Hope with Howard S. Brown

Two-Time Cancer Survivor and Cancer Whisperer Who Beat the Odds to Shine Brightly and Share Hope with Howard S. Brown

Howard Brown is an author, Silicon Valley entrepreneur, interfaith peacemaker, two-time stage IV cancer survivor, and healthcare advocate. For over three decades, Howard’s business innovations, leadership principles, mentoring, and resilience in beating cancer against long odds have made him a sought-after speaker and consultant for businesses, nonprofits, congregations, and community groups. His hard-earned wisdom about resilience after beating cancer twice has led him to become a nationally known patient advocate and “cancer whisperer” to many families. Howard, his wife Lisa, and his daughter Emily currently reside in Michigan.

A few highlights from the show:

1. Medical technologies that played a role in Howard's recovery and expanding his family: bone marrow transplant, In vitro fertilization (IVF)/Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), scans to video, liquid biopsy, tumor burden, clinical trials, immunotherapy, and Interleukin-2

2. It is important that you, your loved ones or family, or a patient advocate ask about what medical technologies are available to treat the type of cancer that you have. As you can see from Howard's experience, there are many options that may help save your life and improve your quality of life.

3. Don't isolate yourself. Isolation brings darkness.

4. Call for help and hold on to hope.

5. Find your happy place and go there!

My Sister's Keeper Raising and Losing a Sister to Liver Cancer with Andrea Wilson Woods

My Sister's Keeper Raising and Losing a Sister to Liver Cancer with Andrea Wilson Woods

Andrea Wilson Woods is a writer who loves to tell stories, and a patient advocate who founded the nonprofit Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association. Andrea is the CEO and co-founder of Cancer University, a for-profit, social-impact, digital health company. Her best-selling and award-winning book, Better Off Bald: A Life in 147 Days, is a medical memoir about raising and losing her sister, Adrienne, to liver cancer.

A few highlights from the show:

1. Even if there is resistance from the provider and healthcare team, always ask questions. Ask many as you need to ask until you get the information that you need in a way that you understand it. Your life or your loved one's life can depend on it.

2. You have to be a force of nature. You have to stand up for the patient because the patient's focus needs to be on getting well and resting. Often the patient doesn't have the time or energy to participate in those conversations. So the caregiver, whether it's a spouse or a friend, or a parent or sibling, the onus is on the caregiver often to take charge.

3. Always keep track of your medical records. Keep them organized in a binder and in a place where you can easily access them. It is a good idea to have electronic and paper copies. Always keep a medical journal with your notes and observations.

Personal Fears and Emotional Upsets How They Impact Couples and Marriages with Lane Stokes

Personal Fears and Emotional Upsets How They Impact Couples and Marriages with Lane Stokes

Lane Stokes spent five years as an ordained minister before moving toward counseling. Unlike most ministers, he pursued mental health rather than pastoral counseling. He believed it would help him to better understand his clients in whatever type of therapy he would offer. In the past 34 years of private practice as a mental health clinician, and marriage and family counselor, he believes that he was correct in that assumption. During the first 32 years, he developed programs to make marriage counseling quicker and thus less expensive. Lane helps people understand how their emotions operate and how to control them to give the person a way to obtain their needs and desires. He made a big discovery that he now refers to as Counseling Condensed Courses. They can give the participant abilities in three to five sessions that it has taken others three to five years to learn. One of these is the course "Let Us Teach You How to be Married" for married or unmarried couples. Another is "How Others Perceive You".

✨A few highlights from the show:

1. Anxiety isn't a rooted emotion. The rooted emotion is fear.

2. Your personality changes right after you get married.

3. People don't go to counseling because they don't know what is possible in marriage.

Jodi's Climb for Hope Turning Pain Into Passion with Andrew Buerger

Jodi's Climb for Hope Turning Pain Into Passion with Andrew Buerger

When Andrew Buerger's sister was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, her courage and strength spurred Andy to turn pain into a passion. Andy founded Jodi's Climb for Hope, which raised more than $900,000 for research by leading mountain-climbing expeditions-an apt metaphor for the struggles women affected by breast cancer endure. In 2008 tragedy struck again when Andy's wife Jen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Jodi's Climb for Hope expanded the scope of its mission into multiple sclerosis research as well. On an expedition in Iceland, Andy discovered something that he developed into B'More Organic, a protein drink that Inc. magazine ranked as the fifth fastest-growing natural brand. With engaging mountaineering, business, and personal stories, Andrew shares the guiding principles that have helped him navigate the peaks and valleys of his life.

✨A few highlights from the show:

1. Since 2007, Climb For Hope has taken over 250 people safely up summits around the world, raising approximately $750,000 for early-stage research.

Mourning is moving grief from the inside of you to the outside of you by talking about it or writing about it.

A Breast Cancer Thriver Shares Why Diversity Matters in Cancer Care with Nic Hyl

A Breast Cancer Thriver Shares Why Diversity Matters in Cancer Care with Nic Hyl

Nic Hyl is a fashion designer and cancer thriver. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2022, she along with her husband, set out to help others by creating a foundation that donates funds from the sale of selected products, to help women, men, and families battling the daily costs of breast cancer. Live Beautiful Nation Foundation launched on October 1, 2022.

✨A few highlights from the show:

1. Nic shared that the one thing she would have done differently was getting a second opinion.

Some reasons to get a second opinion are a) To prevent a misdiagnosis. b) A diagnosis is not definitive. c) There can be more than one "right" treatment.

2. Black patients treated by Black doctors tend to fare better, and overall minority patients benefit from having minority doctors. (https://ro.co/health-guide/black-doctors/)

3. If you have doubts or concerns, never be afraid to ask how your race will affect the quality of care that you will receive.

Social Security Disability: The Importance of Section 13 Disability Listings for Cancer Patients with Spencer Bishins

Social Security Disability: The Importance of Section 13 Disability Listings for Cancer Patients with Spencer Bishins

Spencer Bishins has a master’s degree from the London School of Economics, and a law degree from Florida State University. After law school, he worked in the private sector for two years prior to joining the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2010. He worked at the Appeals Council for almost four years, reviewing thousands of disability decisions for compliance with SSA’s complex rules and procedures. He then worked at the hearing level for seven years, where he drafted almost 2,000 decisions for SSA Administrative Law Judges. After working for SSA for more than 10 years, he wanted to help demystify the complicated disability system.  His first book, Social Security Disability Revealed: Why it’s so hard to access benefits and what you can do about it, explores the obstacles that disability claimants face as they try to access benefits.

✨A few highlights from the show:

1. Many people are denied at the beginning of the social security disability benefits process because they have incomplete medical records and there is an incentive to deny claims.

2. Don't DIY when applying for social security benefits.

Don't Give Up! Grow Through the Narrow Spots in Life with Ruth Bachman

Don't Give Up! Grow Through the Narrow Spots in Life with Ruth Bachman

In February of 2003, Ruth Bachman was a left-handed woman, wife, and mother in apparent good health. She ate reasonably well, was physically active, had annual checkups, practiced meditation and yoga, attended church regularly, and volunteered in the community. Today, she is all of those things plus the grandmother of 4; except now, after diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue sarcoma, she is a right-handed amputee with a renewed purpose for life, which is a mission to share a message equipping individuals with the perspective and resources necessary to navigate the inevitable changes that occur in life, by design or by happenstance, while recognizing the powerful potential for transformation by embracing “what is”. Ruth has climbed mountains, written an award-winning book, been a survivor advocate, and spoken to a wide variety of audiences; contributing her time, her resources, and her talents to fostering the collaboration of the science that heals the body, with the critical role that mind, and spirit play toward that end.

✨A few highlights from the show:

1. Rein In Sarcoma-https://www.reininsarcoma.org/

2. There are many types of sarcoma. Yet, it is rare and often misdiagnosed.

3. Reflect on what helped you survive in the past.

Shedding Light on Nutraceuticals for Health Support with Bogdan Chugunov

Shedding Light on Nutraceuticals for Health Support with Bogdan Chugunov

Bogdan Chugunov is a 17-year gastric/stomach cancer survivor. He has traveled around the globe to find people who had minimal mortality rates due to cancer. He found that diet played a big part in the low rates, and he also discovered the amazing healing properties of beehive products. Bogdan incorporated nutraceuticals that help people get and stay healthy under Bee Magic and Health Republic brands. He personally tests and consumes all of his products in addition to sharing his experience and knowledge. Bogdan is not a medical doctor.

A few highlights from the show:

1. Nutraceuticals are food or dietary supplements that are believed to provide health benefits.

2. 100% of nutraceuticals can be absorbed into the body. Our bodies are not designed to consume pills or capsules. Therefore, only about 5-10% can be absorbed from consumption.

3. The immune system or immune barrier is the only thing that can prevent cancer development.

Cancer and the Healthcare System Through the Eyes of a Daughter, Caregiver, and Patient Advocate with Melissa Mullamphy

Cancer and the Healthcare System Through the Eyes of a Daughter, Caregiver, and Patient Advocate with Melissa Mullamphy

Melissa Mullamphy is a patient advocate. She was also the caregiver for her mother, Constance Burns, who passed away from ovarian cancer. She has a message that needs to be heard and tips on making your healthcare experience and outcomes positive. Melissa wrote a memoir and self-help book called, Not in Vain, A Promise Kept. It is about her mom's battle with ovarian cancer 10 years ago. It is a real and raw account of what her mother and her family went through for nine months of her cancer journey that she ultimately lost. Melissa's vision and goal are to get the message out and help people find their voice and take better control of their health.

✨A few highlights from the show:

1. Ovarian cancer is known as the "silent killer" because the symptoms are often mistaken for other benign conditions, particularly the ones that affect the gastrointestinal system, or simply changes in a woman's body as she ages.

2. Always research hospitals, facilities, and doctors before becoming a patient. Read the reviews and ratings. Use them as a guide.

3. Befriend nurses.

How to Share Acts of Love When Cancer Shows Up at Work and in Your Personal Life with Kim Hamer

How to Share Acts of Love When Cancer Shows Up at Work and in Your Personal Life with Kim Hamer

On April 16, 2009, Kim Hamer watched her 44-yr-old husband take his last breath. During his illness and after his death, she was amazed by the helpful ways their coworkers, bosses, friends, and family supported them. Kim started calling their kind actions "acts of love".

After the death of her husband, Kim, an HR leader, noticed how little guidance leaders received when navigating cancer, health crisis, or the death of a team member. She knew their lack of knowledge negatively affected morale, employee engagement, and productivity. She set out to change that. Combining her personal experience with her professional knowledge and leadership skills, Kim launched her business to support leaders and coworkers when cancer (or any health crisis) affects a team member.

A few highlights from the show:

When someone has cancer, do NOT say, "If you need anything let me know"!

WHY? What is anything? They have no idea what kind of help they need. They do not want to risk rejection.

Instead, be specific about HOW you can help.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Cancer Survivor Iselyn Hamilton-Austin Shares Why the Time is Now

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Cancer Survivor Iselyn Hamilton-Austin Shares Why the Time is Now

Iselyn Hamilton-Austin is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, 16-year breast cancer survivor, and CEO of Duckling to Diva; a young women's empowerment organization. Iselyn also takes pride in being a children's book author, mother, and Grandmother.

A few highlights from the show:

1. When you are diagnosed with cancer, it is a time when you have to put yourself first.

2. Many cancer survivors experience survivor's remorse. It is feelings of guilt that occur after surviving a life-threatening, traumatic event when others did not.

3. The time is now to do the things you want to do in life. We don't know how long we have.

4. Make the decision not to be a cancer victim. See yourself as victorious! Each day you wake up and have another shot at life that is a win!

🦄About Me:

In 2011, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, out of the blue. I did not have any prior health concerns or issues. Fast forward, the dreaded cancer diagnosis opened my eyes, introduced me to my purpose, and lead me to where I am today.

As a Cancer Doula, I use my 11 years of experience with cancer to support and guide others diagnosed with cancer. Many people are not familiar with what a cancer doula is. Think of me as a personal health care advocate.
