Net Cast

By Mark L. Hatfield

An in-depth approach to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

Net Cast was designed based on principles that Jesus shared with His disciples when they were fishing, by casting nets (See Luke 5:1-11). He told them that they would be fishers of men and they followed Him.

Net Cast has fishing for souls as its primary objective. We hope to help bring you closer to Christ through the studies of the word of God offered here.

Please send voice messages, feedback, and any gift to help support Net Cast.

Introduction to Luke - Luke 1:1-4 (S7 - E1)

Luke informs his reader Theophilus that he has organized an account of the life of Jesus in an orderly fashion so that the record reflects the exact truth regarding the history of the Lord and Savior. Being a Gentile author and writing to a Gentile audience, it is the easiest gospel to read and understand worldwide. Luke proclaims a gospel that is for all.

Petition for Protection - Psalm 17 (S6 - E18)

Have you ever wondered why the world hates the godly and surrounds them to persecute their lives? Have you ever been envious because it seemed that God was allowing the wicked to prosper and the righteous to suffer? David is going to show us how to petition God for protection but also asked that God would keep us in His watchful care until the day when we are in His glorious presence for all eternity.

The Life Preserver - Psalm 16 (S6 - E17)

David provides a "writing" that gives us insight into how God is the preserver of our lives. Listen as we share 5 ways that God offers preservation to us in the midst of a world full of sin and wickedness. The greatest preservation of all is what God has in store for those who serve Him when they are raised to life eternal and receive everlasting rewards including joy, security, and being in the presence of the Lord at His right hand.

God, His People, and Fools - Psalm 14 (S6 - E15)

God, His People, and Fools - Psalm 14 (S6 - E15)

The foolish man denies the existence of God and persecutes the people of God. David reminds us that salvation is coming to the people of God and fools who rejected Him and His will will be punished for all eternity. In this episode, we will address a verse-by-verse study of Psalm 14 to better understand God, His people, and the fools of this world.

Rejoicing in Salvation - Psalm 13 (S6 - E14)

Rejoicing in Salvation - Psalm 13 (S6 - E14)

Is it okay to question God about our suffering in this life when it appears that God is not responding to our prayers? David is going to demonstrate in song lyrics how we can certainly speak openly with God in faith that He will hear and lead us out of our troubles. The result of this deliverance and salvation is our recognition that God deals bountifully with us and we turn to praising and adoring Him in worship.

What Can the Righteous Do? - Psalm 11 (S6 - E12)

What Can the Righteous Do? - Psalm 11 (S6 - E12)

We will uncover three things the righteous can do to live godly in this present age while living in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation. David gives hope and faith to the righteous as we seek to overcome the darkness with the light of truth. The goal is to lead people out of darkness into the light with us.

The Judgment of the Wicked - Psalm 10 (S6 - E11)

The Judgment of the Wicked - Psalm 10 (S6 - E11)

Today we discuss the wrath of God against evildoers and the salvation that belongs to His people. While there are times that we feel like God is aloof and not helping us through calamities, we find that God is waiting to have vengeance against the wicked until the day of judgment. On that day those who have served Him faithfully will reap their reward and gain full relief from the trials of this life. The terrorists of the earth will suffer for their wrongdoing against the righteous at the hand of God.

God Over All Nations - Psalm 9 (S6 - E10)

God Over All Nations - Psalm 9 (S6 - E10)

God is sovereign over all things despite the efforts of the world to try and remove Him from every aspect of life. David will remind us that God is a righteous judge and will punish evildoers while protecting and saving His godly ones. We can trust in God even in the face of death, because of the joy that awaits the saved. Those who live in sin will be eternally separated from God in a place of torment. The good news is that the gospel invitation still stands for those that would be willing to surrender their life to God through Jesus Christ.

The Lord Has Been Mindful Of Me - Psalm 8 (S6 - E9)

As we learn more about the vastness of our universe we are often left with questions about our significance in the grand scheme of things. David asked these questions of God in a beautiful song. Listen to the answers that God provides in His word and understand the deeper meaning of your existence on earth.

Thanksgiving to the LORD Most High - Psalm 7 (S6 - E8)

How do we maintain a grateful heart and lips full of praise in the midst of our enemies and less-than-desirable circumstances? Listen as David leads us into thanksgiving for God's justice and wrath against unrighteousness while He vindicates and forgives the upright in heart.

Prayer of the Penitent - Psalm 6 (S6 - E7)

Prayer of the Penitent - Psalm 6 (S6 - E7)

David provides a step-by-step guide to repentance before God in this outpouring of his soul in prayer. Often we fail to feel the weight of sin committed before our holy God. Study and learn how you can be pricked in the heart, change your ways, and be restored fully to sweet fellowship with God.

David tells us how to get each day started off on the right foot in the lyrics of a song used by Israel in worship to God. We are reminded of the importance of prayer, righteous living, and worship in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation.

Trusting The Lord To Save - Psalm 3 (S6 - E4)

Trusting The Lord To Save - Psalm 3 (S6 - E4)

On rare occasions when studying the book of Psalms, we are able to learn the Bible's backstory to the passage that we are reading. David writes these songs based on real events in his life. When Absalom was trying to kill his father David, while he fled from Jerusalem for his life, he shows us how to put our trust in the LORD through prayer, protection, and preservation. Join us as we explore II Samuel 15-18 in view of Psalm 3.

Refuge in the King of Kings - Psalm 2 (S6 - E3)

Refuge in the King of Kings - Psalm 2 (S6 - E3)

David provides us with a Messianic psalm that point to the reign of Jesus on His throne and over a spiritual kingdom that we now know as His church. Those who refuse to make Jesus Lord of their life will experience the wrath of God, while those that take refuge in Him will find great spiritual blessings. While the world continues to fight against God, His Son and the Holy Spirit, we find sweet surrender to Him that leads to everlasting life.

Come Now - 4:13-5:9 (S5 - E11)

Come Now - 4:13-5:9 (S5 - E11)

James is going to say the words, "Come now..." and teach two profound lessons to his Christian audience about how to endure the persecution and mistreatment that they were facing during this period of time in their faith. He will close with the coming of the Lord Jesus being imminent. For the Christian, the Lord's return is a day of rejoicing as He will punish the enemies of the cross and take His brethren home. For those who are living in sin on the day of His coming, it will be a day of wrath and righteous judgment. The lesson to take with us is that we must be saved and be ready for that day to come.

The Tongue - A World of Iniquity - 3:1-12 (S5 - E8)

The Tongue - A World of Iniquity - 3:1-12 (S5 - E8)

How powerful is the tongue? So strong that James warns early Christians to refrain from having everyone become teachers so that they will not face a stricter judgment. The tongue is such a small part of the body but it cannot be tamed by anyone. The best that we can hope to do is to direct our speech to bless and not curse. Listen and learn why the tongue is a world of iniquity if we choose not to use this member of our body to the glory of God.

The Triumph of Mercy - 2:1-13 (S5-E6)

The level of mercy that we extend to others will be the same amount of mercy shown to us when we stand before the Lord in judgment. Join us for a study about how mercy triumphs over judgment in three important ways according to James. Our churches should be a loving, unified experience and there is no room for personal favoritism. We are all one in Christ Jesus!

Mirror Mirror - 1:19-27 (S5 - E5)

Mirror Mirror - 1:19-27 (S5 - E5)

Being a good listener is critical to life. This is especially true of our life in the Lord. James will compare someone listening to the word of God and not obeying it to someone seeing their personal flaws in a mirror and walking away without correcting the food in their teeth, the hair out of place, or other blemishes that need to be fixed. We will discuss the three points that James offers to make us ready listeners who are willing to obey the voice of the Lord.

Approval of the Blessed - 1:12-18 (S5 - E4)

James is going to encourage us as Christians to endure trials and temptations while remaining in the truth of God's word, knowing that one day we will have the approval of God and find blessings in eternity. Those that choose to allow sin to reign in their life will be tested and found wanting. Only those that remain true to the gospel call in spite of the efforts of Satan to destroy us will be welcomed to enjoy every good and perfect gift offered to us by the Lord.

Being Steadfast During Trials - 1:2-4 (S5 - E2)

Being Steadfast During Trials - 1:2-4 (S5 - E2)

In our message today, James will address the saints that have been dispersed everywhere with an admonition to find joy and remain dedicated to the Lord even in the midst of hardships in life. We can learn from the example of James and his half-brother Jesus and apply some simple biblical principles that will help us to become more durable. Eventually, we will reach the mark of lacking in nothing. The goal is to become like our Lord who for the everlasting joy set before Him, endured the cross and despised the shame.

Love Acceptable - 8:1-4 (S4 - E32)

There are limitations to passionate intimacy that often leave us reeling and aching with unfulfilled desires. There are barriers that stand between us and our lover. We must honor God by maintaining purity outside of marriage, and yet we are still met with the obstacles of where and when to show our affection even after we are married, in order to be acceptable in social circles. Listen as we discuss how the young girl in our Song wishes that her lover was her brother so that it would be approved for her to show him affection openly.

Where Is My Beloved? - 6:1-3 (S4 - E27)

Where Is My Beloved? - 6:1-3 (S4 - E27)

In the last episode, we talked about how the young girl in the Song of Songs piqued the interest of the daughters of Jerusalem about her lover when she gave a detailed description of what he means to her. Today our episode begins with the young girl being shaken from what appears to be a nightmare and there is a happy resolution to all of her concerns of losing her lover as they are said to have fulfilled their love together. We want to address the subject of being faithful in our covenant relationship in marriage so that we can alleviate some of the nightmarish behaviors that we see in our culture today.

It is advisable that if you have been enjoying this podcast with young ears present that you refrain from doing so at this time. Wait until you are in a private setting to continue. Thank you for taking this word of caution into consideration as we begin today’s episode.

Tell Us About Him - 5:9-16 (S4 - E26)

If you had to give a report to the local police department to describe someone that you love when they were missing, how would you portray them? In this episode, the young girl in our Song will express her heartfelt feelings in another wasf in order to answer the questions of the daughters of Jerusalem and perhaps pique their interest in joining her in search of her lover. She will paint a picture with her words that will show them how handsome that he is to her.

Garden Feasting - 5:1 (S4 - E24)

Garden Feasting - 5:1 (S4 - E24)

After a patient and passionate pursuit of love in marriage, these lovers will imbibe deeply in the intimacy that they have longed for in their relationship. It is beautiful when a couple waits eagerly until they are married to share their most intimate love together. As we will point out by contrasting this passage with Proverbs 7, sexual passion and intimacy have many similarities in and out of marriage. The fact is, the fornicator and adulterer God will judge. The difference then is whether God approves of the union and whether we can participate in the celebration of the love entered into by a man and a woman, based on God's will.  If it is approved, we encourage the new couple to have their fill of lovemaking.

Garden of Spices - 4:12-16 (S4 - E23)

There have been many analogies used to describe someone that is loved by a spouse. In this study, we will see the young girl in our Song described as a garden locked, a rock garden full of spices, fruits, and a spring sealed that is full of fresh flowing water. What does all of this mean? Listen in as we explore Song of Songs 4:12-16.

Revealing Beauty - 4:1-7 (S4 - E21)

Revealing Beauty - 4:1-7 (S4 - E21)

Looking at the one we love and praising the features that enrapture us is a common practice among lovers. In our Song, we will see something similar and this is called a "wasf" in ancient Arabic love poetry. This word simply means description, but it is used here to describe metaphorically the way that someone appears through the eyes of love. Listen as we see how the beloved girl captures the heart of her man.

Coming to the King - 3:6-11 (S4 - E20)

Coming to the King - 3:6-11 (S4 - E20)

Being in love makes us feel like royalty and we feel like we are on top of the world. We have found someone that is special and unique and they bring sweetness to our life by their presence. In this part of our study, the beloved girl will be coming to the king, like royalty and he will protect her and provide for her in whatever way that he needs to. Why is it that these feelings subside over time? How do we keep love alive and maintain this drive to be exhilarated always with a lover?

Let me also mention that today is the first birthday of Net Cast. On this date last year, the premiere episode was launched. Thank you for listening, sending positive vibes my way. I especially want to thank our supporters who gave monetary gifts to help offset the costs associated with studio needs, supplies, and maintaining the host site: www.netcasthost.com. I hope that your support will continue as I anticipate another great year for the podcast. I have been encouraged by the material we have shared together and my prayer is that each episode has been a blessing to your faith.
