REPLAY: The Hope Found in Repentance

REPLAY: The Hope Found in Repentance

[recorded: March 10, 2022] Don’t Change the Channel, Pray with Terry Davis - S2:E1 with Terry Davis

“...repentance says, I’m going to start acting on it and I’m changing my mind and my way. And it’s not for shame; it’s not to bring in a level of hopelessness. It’s really to invite God’s way in, so that we can be aligned with him. If we’re talking regionally, if we’re talking about the church catholic, that universal church, it says, yeah, we need to make sure that we are aligning ourselves with the things that move the heart of the Father. Things that have to do with justice, people who are sick, people who are in prison, people that are hungry.”

An enormous amount of unspoken expectations for Pastors, along with the sense of failure and disappointment on illegitimate metrics, can be a huge point of stress.

There are a lot of check points before leaving pastoral ministry and those should be exhausted first, but you should quit pastoral ministry when you're only in it for the duty or the paycheck; when there is no vision or no sense of God's movement in your call.

REPLAY: Pastor Beware

The Good News for Narcissists & Codependents w/ Dr. Bob Hyatt - S2:E8

Originally Published: July 26, 2022

“Nobody needs to hear the Gospel more, than driven pastors who can’t lay down their workaholism and their productivity, whether they are a narcissist or codependent, whether it’s, I’m building the church or I’m caring for people. If you can’t rest in the finished work of Jesus and work out of that rest, you’re in trouble and you’re not believing the Gospel at the level that you need to."

[13:40] You might be a gift to the church, but you are not the gift.

[14:04] Sabbatical can also be a beast; dealing with anger.

[16:17] Submitting to God’s plan for health doesn’t mean there won't be negative consequences.

[19:05] The narcissistic / codependent spectrum. When you don’t develop a high love of others, you lean narcissistic. When you don’t have a healthy love of self, you lean codependent.

REPLAY: Polarizing Politics

Addressing the Elephant (and Donkey) in the Room w/ Keith Simon S4.E3

Originally Published: January 31, 2023

“In the absence of truth and persuasion, what you’re left with is fear and power. So now, instead of saying to you, this is the right policy, what I say to you is, you should be afraid of people.”

A podcast for Pastors, Leaders, and Re-Thinkers of the Jesus way. Please subscribe, comment, and share. Music compliments of Aaron Strumpel.

[0:00] Welcome to the Quiet Reformation

[1:40] Introducing Keith Simon

[5:50] As humans we want to be with those who we share commonalities with. But sin has not only affected individuals, but tribes and communities that point them away from God’s grace and truth.

[8:50] Tribalism prioritizes insiders at the expense of outsiders. Luke 9 and the disciples calling down fire on the Samaritans.

[10:00] Those we once wanted to kill, the gospel calls us to worship with them in Christ.

[10:48] - “Our country needs healing, our country needs forgiveness, our country needs hope, but we don’t have anything inside our nation to provide that, but Jesus does.”

[12:21] - A point of anxiety in a culture of tribalism is: am I going to say something on the wrong side of the crowd that will come after our reputation, our job, our friend groups.

[16:11] In society currently, it doesn't seem like we are pursuing common good, but some form of “victory” where we want to embarrass people and win in order to make a point.

[17:05] Courage is not a value in and of itself; it is not to be done for its own sake. Otherwise, courage will become belligerent or rude.Jesus wants us to be wise as serpent and innocent as doves. The Prophet Daniel was both courageous and winsome.

[18:45] Courage is not an excuse to forget the fruit of the Spirit.

[19:24] The Elephant (our desires, what we want) and the Rider (our rational faculty) metaphor

[24:23] When proper objective truth is lost as a possibility in a culture, it’s hard to persuade one another towards something good.

[26:30] Many don’t trust institutions anymore because of selfish abuse of authority, but that doesn’t mean Truth isn’t out there.

[27:45] We can escape the partisan, self-orientated tribalism by joining Jesus’ tribe. He tells us to think about and make sacrifices for those outside the tribe. Everyone is invited into Jesus’ tribe to follow the true King.

[29:35] Take your enemy out for coffee. (Don’t poison it!) Get to know the person beyond their politics.

[33:14] Work through the awkwardness. You don't need to agree on everything to work together on some things.

[34:08] Concluding words: Jesus is King. He doesn’t want to be president of the United States. That would be a huge demotion for him. His throne is eternal, he’s not looking for a 4 year term.

[01:14] Happy New Year! May the Gospel tranform your relationships.

[03:42] One Church Leaders Gathering Sheraton Hotel Valley Forge, PA

[05:00] We experience the kingdom of God moving when people function out of what God has put in their heart, more than functioning in a position in an organization.

[07:33] FOCUS Tension: principle and presence

[09:40] MOTIVATION Tension: reality and possibility

[11:49] Think about your ministry and where you lean in these tensions. If only focusing out on your own focus and motivation, be aware of the limits of your ministry.

[13:30] Dangers, gaps, and pitfalls...

  • Over-Promising = Presence + Possibility (lacks principle, reality)
  • Enabling = Presence + Reality (lacks principle, possibility
  • Commiserating = Principle + Reality (lacks presence, possibility)
  • Shame = Principle + Possibility (lacks presence, reality)

[18:49] Avoiding Imbalances in Ministry

  • Acknowledge to self that we're not going to be perfect; don't let the fear of getting it wrong, debilitate you from ministrering.
  • Admit to what our weak spots are to others.
  • Find compliment partners to collaborate with in ministry, even if difficult.
  • Recognize above all else that what people really need is not you but is the person of Jesus Christ.

[22:40] We're trying to introduce people, even those who have a longstanding relationship with God, each day to the living Christ.

Reclaiming Relationship in a Technological World w/ Andy Crouch - S2:E5 Originally Published: June 14, 2022

“I’m the furthest thing from hopeless about our current world and the technological empire we live in because we’ve seen it before. We’ve seen the renewal that can happen when a very small group of people, albeit somewhat crazy people, say we’re just not living on the empire's terms; we’re doing this other thing. And then crazy stuff begins to happen.”

www.praxislabs.org/life - Video Introduction and Book Purchase
tinyurl.com/andy-book-excerpt

[1:30] Introducing Andy Crouch

[3:20] A book about what it means, and how hard it is, to be a person in our world.

[5:02] Preparing to write: despair, anguish, and self-loathing.

[5:45] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique

[8:28] excerpt: “If there is one word that sums up the crisis of personhood in our time, for the powerful and powerless alike, it is loneliness…”

[11:00] We are so swimming in isolation, that we don’t know what it would be like to not be lonely. We live in a cultural environment that is structured to make it difficult to pay attention to other people.

[16:20] Relating to persons as robots: creatures that look just like us, but manufactured, not begotten, to do the work humans don’t want to do; their worth is only in their utility.

[19:23] Leanne Payne: We either contemplate or we exploit.

[23:12] The politics of recognition is a demand to be affirmed. Real relationships, however, don't ratify everything in a person; we’re going to urge one another to go from bent ways to good deeds.

[26:32] A household is more than just family; it sees a person and what that person could be, not just what I currently am.

[27:32] Church for Church Leaders: netzer.org/donate

[33:50] The Gospel of Jesus Christ inverts the Gospel of the Empire

[37:20] The Empire of Technology gives us a template for what it means to matter, to make a difference, and to have power. The way of Jesus is just different.

[39:31] Excerpt: “We do not have to accept our technology’s default settings—they can be adapted, and eventually redesigned, to serve a new and better set of purposes…”

Experiences of Loneliness (00:01:48) Personal stories of feeling like outsiders and being rejected, highlighting the impact of loneliness in everyday life. Where have you felt lonely or rejected?

God's Presence in Loneliness (00:06:46) The genealogy of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew demonstrates that God is with His people throughout history, providing a sense of belonging and grounding in times of loneliness.

The naming of Jesus (00:11:44) Joseph's role in naming Jesus; losing and gaining authority.

The meaning of Emmanuel (00:13:53) Exploring the different characteristics of "Emmanuel" and its connection to Jesus.

Joseph's role and faith (00:16:21) Examining Joseph's sacrifices and faith in supporting Mary and participating in God's plan.

Concluding Remarks (00:20:34) Unless we reconcile in our minds and come to terms with the reality that God is actually with us and for us and toward us, we can't experience the beauty of what it means that Emmanuel is God coming close enough to keep us from ever having to deal with the depth of loneliness that comes from truly being alone.

PART 2 / 2

Dr. Kyuboem Lee , Assistant Professor of Missiology

[1:56] The modern city exist not through a gradual evolution, but through adaptations that were in response to crisis. The church, as a cultural entity, does the same.

[4:45] Status quo bias - doing what you've always done, even if it isn't working. Why? Because it's what we know and how we've been trained.

[5:30] Contextual theology arose from a need from missionaries to recognize that different cultures do things differently and so things get lost in translation.

[7:00] There is a fine line between faithfulness and stubbornness.

[10:08] Seminaries are in crisis. It shifted from equipping the church to a degree mill that wasn't holistic in it's discipleship.

[12:20] The church originally was a travelling seminary in gaining theological education AND practice on mission.

[13:36] Leaders need to be trained for their culture and locality, not just philosophical. Students should not just be learned but leaders in community and mission. The reason we do theology is not so we can be more clever, but in order to better serve the mission of God.

[15:30] Churches need to cooperate regionally rather than just work on their individual brand.

Crisis: Womb or Tomb? w/ Dr. Kyuboem Lee

This podcast is a small part of the ministry of Netzer.org. We help to equip and encourage the people of God to know that they are not alone and that God’s household has plenty of wisdom to go around.

PART 1 / 2

Dr. Kyuboem Lee , Assistant Professor of Missiology

[1:55] A good theology comes from the Church engaging in mission. The scriptures are a missional document.

[3:20] "When the Church ceases to be one, or ceases to be missionary, it contradicts its own nature." - Lesslie Newbigin

[4:06] A main task of the Church is to go looking for the one lost sheep that isn't part of the inner circle.

[5:38] Missional theology is not about the church growth movement or attractional church model.

[7:09] "It is... normal for Christians to live in a situation of crisis... Let us also know that to encounter crisis is to encounter the possibility of truly being the church." - David Bosch

[10:00] The Pandemic revealed the need for pastoral ministry reform and church model creativity.

[14:04] Movement ecclesiology is not focused on reaching the masses, but raising up other leaders so they can lead out there, not just in the local institution.

[15:10] Loneliness rewired our brain during the pandemic.

Power in Prayer | PART 2 / 2

Jim Maxim, Acts 4:13 Ministries

[1:58] Going to church and not seeing the power of prayer

[3:03] Prayer is a privilege of presence and practical value.

[4:30] My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

[6:30] One of the greatest sins in the universe is us devaluing our ability to talk with God.

[7:40] Pushing the Holy Spirit out of our sermons; the need to regain reverence.

[10:00] Put your notes away and start praying.

[14:00] Pray over the small, simple, and intimate places. God is not God just over the Church or religion, but over the whole universe.

[15:15] God created you for the people around you.

[17:50] But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. (Matthew 6:6)

[21:10] If my people, who are called by my name, build big building, raise a lot of money, and get PHDs...

[22:15] During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. (Hebrews 5:7)

Dysfunction, Drugs, Demons, and Deliverance w/ Jim Maxim

Power in Prayer | PART 1 / 2

Jim Maxim, Acts 4:13 Ministries

[1:32] Mobilizing the church to intercede for pastors.

[2:30] People in the pew are not second class Christians.

[3:30] In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (Ephesians 6:16)

[6:40] Prayer isn't just a practice, but also something with active spiritual resistance; it's a struggle and a battle.

[8:10] Testimony: “It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until he has hurt him deeply." (A.W. Tozer)

[17:55] Intercession brings down strongholds and usher others into the presence of God in order for them to make their own decision to follow Christ.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. (2 Corinthians 10:4-6)

[19:25] God wants to engage you!

PART 2 / 2 - Adventures in Ministry

Virgy Centeno

[1:04] Trying to see a ministry dream through the eyes of your spouse, rather than shutting them down and burdening them with details. Put yourself in their shoes.

[6:10] Any ministry that wants to be strong, healthy, and sustainable, has to be in prayer. Prayer also builds community.

[10:05] Prayer isn’t just about being strengthened and receiving vision and wisdom, but about devotion and adoration in the arms of the Trinity.

[12:25] Emotional Healthy Devotionals

[13:05] The Nations are Now In Our Back Yard - Isaiah 42:6

  • I, the Lord, have called you to demonstrate my righteousness. I will take you by the hand and guard you, and I will give you to my people, Israel, as a symbol of my covenant with them. And you will be a light to guide the nations.

[15:18] God Giving His People the Best - 1 Corinthians 1:30

  • God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.

Evangelism: More Than a Moment w/ Bonnie O’Neil

PART 1 / 2

[1:10] Introducing Bonnie O’Neil, Executive Director of Alpha Mid Atlantic

[2:20] Christian identity involves mission, being sent, being the priesthood of all believers

[6:00] How do we handle the word evangelize in our current culture

[7:20] Sin is primarily the broken relationship with the Father, not simply moral failure. The Crucifixion: Understanding the Death of Jesus Christ by Flemming Rutledge

[9:15] Jesus preached the Gospel even BEFORE the cross and crucifixion

[11:10] The Gospel includes substitution, Christ’s life for mine, but it is not a cold-hearted transaction

[14:20] The ear of our culture right now is not concerned with what is true or right, but what's functionally positive, what is good. Models of outreach change

[19:15] Because of cultural polarization, many are scared to go into deeper conversations with others, so it's harder to get to spiritual conversations

Academics of the Heart w/ Dr. Nijay Gupta

PART 2 / 2

[0:05] Jumping back in with Dr. Nijay Gupta

[0:50] Growing up in a Christian environment that was serious, but also very sterile.

[2:45] God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:8)

[4:40] Love involves wrapping our whole self around someone. Hate involves creating a distance or barriers between yourself and another. To love your enemies, means to actually care about them.

[8:25] “I have decided to stick to love...Hate is too great a burden to bear.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

[9:05] Miroslav Volf - Religion and Ethics Newsweekly

[10:53] The mechanisms are important regarding atonement, but what is more important is the motivation.

[13:15] "The most profound thought I have ever known is the simple truth: Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so." Karth Barth

[13:50] The problem with pastors today is their over familiarity with the Bible.

[15:40] Bible Reading should not be about just information but about formation with a disposition that expects to hear from God.

[18:40] May God turn our hearts to Him in faith, hope, and love.

Learning How To Learn How To Study The Bible w/ Dr. Nijay Gupta

Learning How To Learn How To Study The Bible w/ Dr. Nijay Gupta

PART 1 / 2

[0:40] Introducing Dr. Nijay Gupta

[2:08] The goal of theological interpretation is knowing God and being known by God; it’s hard to study the Bible neutrally as “just an academic”.

[3:05] Love is at the heart of Paul’s theology. It’s not just an addendum related to ethics.

[4:42] The New Testament Commentary Guide: A Brief Handbook for Students and Pastors

[7:10] I like to take these big lofty things that academics are talking about, and bring them to busy pastors and lay people who can’t wade through a 700 page book.

[10:03] We all know we should stop doing the bad thing but then we realize we’re part of systems and habits and behaviors and families that make it more difficult than to just stop sin.

[11:30] Practical Theology

[12:40] The internet has brought us a lot of information. But the challenge is ALL the opinions of everybody ALL right in front of you. It’s a cacophony of learning.

[16:45] How do you respect someone you really disagree with? Philippians 4:2-3 - I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Let Jesus Give You Your Life Back w/ Dr. Cherith Fee Nordling S4:12

The Lord’s Table, Part 2

"The enacting of trying to become like Christ, that’s where love happens in the Triune God in this world. We’re just broken and so we can do it so partially, we misread so much of what’s going on, we don’t see with the eyes of Jesus so much of the time, and we don’t speak with the voice of Jesus. And God’s like… 'I know! So come to this table and just be reminded that actually my life is the life I give you.'"

[2:00] Humans are not the agents of grace, God is, and that’s what the table is about.

[3:40] Examination of yourself should not be individualized, but held in relationship with others.

[5:50] We are still growing into the conformity of what it looks like to be truly human. We still have to let go of the things that Jesus just wants to kill. These things are killing you and killing the community, because you’re identity is being formed around stuff that is so transient, so meaningless.

[8:28] What table are you eating at? If we want to eat and drink the life of the world, which is actually death, it’ll kill you. It will destroy our souls, it will destroy our relationships, it will destroy our lives, to eat and drink of a world that’s broken in Jesus name.

[11:15] At the table we are taking the stuff of creation and eating a meal that’s also happening in heaven. The Spirit join together Jesus  hosting the meal and the remembrance of a cruciform life.

[14:28] God has already told us that none of us can earn being at this table. God is the righteous one.

[16:30] Jesus the Bread of Life

[17:25] Psalm 110 - If you don’t have the ascended Jesus in your sightline all the time, you don’t know who you are and you don’t know what God is doing. We can’t get stuck looking backwards at Jesus death and resurrection as some event back then. We must look at the One who is wearing the marks of His wounds from that death into resurrected glory that has literally brought humanity into the life of God.

[24:00] The Table isn’t about feeling sorry for Jesus and sorry for ourselves. A subtle contract with God can be that as long as we give God brokenness, He’ll give us heaven.

[30:45] You, the Church, are the proclamation of God in the world as you participate in the life of Christ.

[35:15] The very first thing that Jesus wants to give you is the love of the Triune God. The table is a homecoming.

We’re Not Getting Out of This Alive w/ Dr. Cherith Fee Nordling S4:E11

The Lord’s Table, Part 1

“It’s taken decades for me to be able to say joyfully the things I just said to you, because they didn’t make sense to me. I would dread communion. Honestly, you talk to your average church goer, they do too. Unless there is some kind of a fellowship where somehow there’s been a renewal of what this meal is…”

[2:50] Introducing Dr. Cherith Fee Nordling - a teacher, writer, speaker, and mentor in theology, Biblical studies, and Christian formation. Having taught theology in colleges and seminaries for the past twenty years, she is currently a Sessional Lecturer at Regent College and teaches theology in its Masters program in Leadership, Theology, and Society. She is also a joyful member of the Open Table Conference. Married to Robert, an orchestra conductor, they are presently living in Grand Rapids, MI and sharing life together with four generations of Nordlings!

[3:55] Remembering a Father and Scholar, Gordon Fee

[6:11] The Table always hold the breadth and depth of mystery

[8:40] Jesus is nor a supra-human; he’s one of us, yet holy and faithful in every way.

[10:13] You can’t be who you were made to be, apart from Jesus. You cannot come into your true humanity, which will be forever, apart from participating in the death and resurrection of Christ.

[12:35] We don’t deserve the meal. There is no transacting. You don’t need to do more stuff before you come to the table.

[13:30] How Great Thou Art (Aaron Strumpel)

But when I think that God, his Son not sparing

Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in

That on the cross my burden gladly bearing

He bled and died to take away my sin

[17:23] Is the ancient practice of the Lord’s Table out of touch with the modern world?

[21:12] The Lord’s Table is not about something you have to do. It’s about the overflowing, cross-shaped, self-giving love of God. When we make it duty bound, we’re likely just trying to relieve some stress in our lives.

[23:20] The demonic tells lies as the truth. If you are part of the story of Christ, participating in Him, the old constructs of the world can’t be included; you can’t enact a lie.

[27:30] Letters were read out loud in community. You can’t privatize this message about the Table. You are united with Christ… so what the heck is going on? There is no Second Baptist in Corinth… why are you divided?
