Dr Sophie Lewis
Dr Sophie Lewis is the ACT’s newly Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment. She was the 2019 ACT Scientist of the Year. Sophie previously worked in academia where she used climate models, observations and palaeoclimate records to provide a long-term perspective on recent climate change—and has a particular focus on how heatwave events in Australia are changing. Her research has never been more relevant than this year. Stephanie Males is the first Canberra woman appointed to manage PricewaterhouseCoopers in the capital. She is now responsible for overseeing a workforce of 500 and providing high level advice to federal government departments on taxation, employment, international trade and supply chain consequences of delivering a range of public policy measures. Dhani Gilbert
This NAIDOC week we are celebrating the contribution that Wiradjuri woman Dhani Gilbert is making to her city and her culture. At just 18, Dhani has already dedicated her considerable energies to promoting the rights and recognition of Indigenous Australians—proudly following in the footsteps of her grandfather, veteran Aboriginal activist Kevin Gilbert. At just 16, Dhani was named Young Canberra Citizen of the Year, and she is now trailblazing her way through three tertiary qualifications. Dan Bourchier
Dan Bourchier holds an esteemed place in the city’s landscape. He is responsible for delivering the nightly news bulletin for the national broadcaster, a position he undertakes as a proud Indigenous gay man. Dan discusses ABC Canberra’s ground-breaking decision last year to deliver an indigenous welcome on the evening news, as well as his personal reflections on the same-sex marriage laws and what it means for him and his partner Karl—both emotionally-charged topics. Catherine Carter
A former Army brat who spent some time in Canberra as a child, Catherine agreed to relocate to the national capital when she married a Canberra man—the proviso being it would be for a maximum of two years. Twenty years on, she has no plans to leave. In 2018, she founded Salon Canberra, a thinktank and networking venture which seeks to bring a diverse range of people together—from the arts, property industry, academia and innovation— to enrich the city’s potential. In this episode, Catherine discusses how Salon has facilitated connections – and the ways in which it is already impacting on the city.
