Pratique Inglês Agora > Amazon rainforest fires are an international crisis

Hello everyone.

Sejam bem-vindos ao Newslettr - a melhor escola de inglês no seu bolso

Artigo do dia: Amazon rainforest fires are an international crisis  Fires are burning in the Amazon rainforest at an alarming rate. French President Emmanuel Macron has said the record number of fires is now an "international crisis". There has been an 85 per cent increase in fires in the Amazon this year. Mr Macron said urgent action needed to be taken. He said the fires needed to be on top of the agenda at the G7 summit of world leaders in Biarritz. Macron tweeted about how serious he thought the fires were. He wrote: "Our house is burning. Literally. The Amazon rain forest - the lungs which produce 20% of our planet’s oxygen - is on fire. It is an international crisis. Members of the G7 Summit, let's discuss this emergency in two days." Other leaders agreed that they should discuss the fires. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called the fires an "acute emergency". She said they were "shocking". She added that the fires didn't only threaten Brazil and its neighboring countries, but also affected the whole world. The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the fires "not only heartbreaking," but "an international crisis". He added: "We stand ready to provide whatever help we can to bring them under control and help protect one of Earth's greatest wonders." UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said: "In the midst of the global climate crisis, we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon must be protected."

Pratique Inglês Agora > Koalas hug trees to stay cool

Hello everyone.

Sejam bem-vindos ao Newslettr - a melhor escola de inglês no seu bolso

Artigo do dia: Koalas hug trees to stay cool  Scientists have unlocked one of the secrets as to how koalas stay cool and avoid dehydration in the intense heat of Australian summers. They hug trees. For decades people thought the cuddly marsupials clung to trees simply because they were tired and wanted somewhere to nap. Researchers from Melbourne University have now cast new light on the tree-hugging habits of the koala. Lead researcher Natalie Briscoe said there is a five-degree difference in temperature between a tree trunk and the air. Koalas utilize the cooler surface by spreading themselves out on large branches or by hugging the trunk. Ms Briscoe said: "Access to these trees can save about half the water a koala would need to keep cool on a hot day." Briscoe studied the behaviour of 37 koalas on an island off the Melbourne coast. She is part of a team trying to identify how koalas might survive higher temperatures brought by global warming. Her observations and conclusions regarding the cooling effects of the trees came as a surprise to her. She noted that the koalas sat upright in cooler weather, hugged branches when it became warmer, and then wrapped themselves around the tree trunk when it got hot. The animals even moved to different trees that had cooler trunks. She said the trees are probably cooler because of the water they suck up from the ground. The koala's cooling technique could be one way for humans to survive increasingly hot summers.

Pratique Inglês Agora > Michael Schumacher medical records 'for sale'

Hello everyone.

Artigo do dia: Michael Schumacher medical records 'for sale'  Shocking though it may seem, someone has stolen the medical records of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher and could be offering them for sale to the highest bidder. The F1 driver's manager Sabine Kehm told journalists that she wasn't sure whether the person trying to sell the records actually had them. She reiterated that she would press charges if anyone bought or published the genuine documents. She said: "The contents of any medical files are totally private and confidential and must not be made available to the public. We will therefore, in every single case, press for criminal charges and damages against any publication of the content or reference to the medical file." The seven-time F1 champion has only just been brought out of a coma after suffering a traumatic head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps on 29 December. Sky Sports News correspondent Craig Slater reported on how lax the security was at Mr Schumacher's hospital. He said: "Security was very scant indeed and it was distressing. The family had to run a gauntlet of paparazzi every day when they arrived at the hospital, despite repeated pleas for the media to take a step back and to respect Michael Schumacher’s privacy as a patient and a human being." He added that it was sad the family now faced seeing Michael's medical notes "potentially being auctioned over the Internet". Pratique inglês agora > Positive thinking helps us live longer

Hello everyone.

Artigo do dia: Positive thinking helps us live longer

Positive thinkers are more likely to live longer than negative thinkers. This is according to a combination of studies conducted by the Boston University School of Medicine into the health of people in the USA. Researchers looked at data on the health of 70,000 female nurses and 1,500 male military veterans. They discovered that people who were optimists (people who thought positively) were more likely to live to the age of 85. They said people who were more pessimistic (those who thought negatively) were 11-15 per cent less likely to live to that age. The researchers believe that optimists (positive thinkers) found it easier to manage stress than pessimists (negative thinkers). Participants in the two studies answered questions in a survey. The questions assessed their levels of optimism. The surveys matched these levels with the participants' overall level of health. They were also asked about their levels of exercise, their diets, as well as how much they smoked and drank. Professor Lewina Lee said: "Our findings speak to the possibility that raising levels of optimism may promote longevity and healthy ageing." She had some advice for pessimists who might want to live longer. The advice was to, "imagine a future in which everything has turned out well". She urged people to increase levels of optimism. She said it was healthier for people to look on the bright side of life.
