New Testament Theologist with Rev. Nick Quient

New Testament Theologist with Rev. Nick Quient

By Nicholas Quient

I am a New Testament nerd who loves studying Scripture. I'm also a theologian, dad, husband, and hockey fan (not in order of importance, of course!). I also served in full time pastoral ministry for almost four years. For me, scholarship is ultimately an act of worship and service to the church, and the goal of such scholarship is for the empowerment of the church universal. So let's start reading and reading well!

PATRIARCHY in Genesis 1-2?: An Exhaustive Biblical & Theological Commentary (with 2 OT experts!)

PATRIARCHY in Genesis 1-2?: An Exhaustive Biblical & Theological Commentary (with 2 OT experts!)

This episode is long. My hope, beyond a lot of what I've seen online  here on YouTube, is that what I've presented is fair and thorough and  comprehensive. The topic of gender in Genesis 1-2 remains divisive but I  do not believe it should be this divisive. Here, I talk extensively  with two Old Testament experts and scholars about hermeneutics, gender,  creation, Hebrew syntax, key words, biblical theology, and ancient  cosmology - which is a lot to think about but the question is vital and  requires sufficient argumentation.   My goal is not, first and foremost, to articulate an exclusive reading  of the passage (in favor of complementarianism or egalitarianism) but to  go where the text leads me. That has, of course, placed me firmly on  one side of this evangelical debate amongst my Christian brothers and  sisters. I say this now because I care most about what God's word *says*  more than fitting God's word into a neat little box for everyone. God's  word should challenge us repeatedly to think about his command to us.

As such, much of what passed for strong biblical arguments concerning a  patriarchal reading of Genesis 1-2 remains almost exclusively on  inferences and supposed implications. I say this with conviction and  respect, but I do not see sufficient reasoning to conclude that Genesis  1-2 teaches a heirarchichal ordering of men and women based on the  actual text of the inerrant word of God. You may disagree and that is  fine, but I do not think one can so easily dismiss the arguments made in  this video. Should you disagree, please be respectful in the comments.

God's Apocalyptic LOVE: A Theological Exegesis of Romans 8:31-39

God's Apocalyptic LOVE: A Theological Exegesis of Romans 8:31-39

Assurance, security, or something more ... apocalyptic?

In this video I tackle Paul's beautiful and complex view of God's activity and human agency in Romans 8:31-39. God's holiness is at the center of all that he does, and Paul's vision captures both the trials of life and the need for faithful allegiance to King Jesus.

Translation:

8:31 What, therefore, will we say about such things? If God is for us, who is against us? 8:32 He who did not spare his own son but handed him over for all of us, how will he not also with him graciously bestow to us all things? 8:33 Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? God is the One who righteously vindicates. 8:34. Who will condemn? Christ Jesus —the one who died—and more than that he was raised —who is also at the right hand of God and is making intercession on our behalf. 8:35 What will separate us from the love of God? Oppression or distress or persecution or starvation or nakedness or peril or sword? 8:36 As it is written
For we are being put to death all the day long
We are considered as lambs for slaughter
8:37 Yet, through all of these things we are beyond victorious through the One who loves us. 8:38 For I am persuaded that neither Death nor life nor angels nor sovereignties nor what is present nor what is to come nor Powers 8:39 nor height nor depth nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gender ROLES & Apologetic Rhetoric: A Thoughtful Rejoinder to Alisa Childers and Frank Turek

Gender ROLES & Apologetic Rhetoric: A Thoughtful Rejoinder to Alisa Childers and Frank Turek

During an AMA, I asked Alisa Childers and Frank Turek a question about women and sexism in Christianity. I've included their response and my own reflection and rejoinder to their comments. I think, overall, I don't disagree with their broader points but their use of "role" language caused me to reflect a lot on the nature of such language within the complementarian-egalitarian debate in evangelicalism.
