NextGenTalks: The Future of Policing

This conversation will discuss the concept of allyship in the movement for racial equity in policing, and offer analysis and observations on how communities came together during the protests of summer 2020. Coverage may include discussions related to broader race issues in America in general, but the conversation will focus on the context of the need for racial equity in policing and the criminal justice system. The goal of this conversation will be to help audiences understand how to be an effective ally and why allyship is important in this context.

This conversation will unpack law enforcement’s response to the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. The conversation will stay away from discussions related to presidential or partisan politics, and instead, focus on observations and analysis of law enforcement’s response to the incident. All panelists will be Gen Z thinkers, influencers and podcasters, and the conversation will be an opportunity to dialogue, ask each other questions, spur critical thinking and openly discuss thoughts and reactions to the events of that historic day.

This conversation will unpack the different aspects and themes of police culture and its contribution to some of the problems we see in policing. Coverage will include a discussion around the “Warrior vs. Guardian” mentality, the “Thin Blue Line”, and the “militarization” of police. The focus will be on aspects of police culture that keep the profession stuck, resistant to change, and cause friction with the communities they’re serving.

This conversation will explore the issue of racism and racial bias within policing in America, and feature the work of CPE. CPE will have an opportunity to give an overview of its mission, its work and its case studies. Topic coverage will include how police departments deal with racial bias, how it can be rooted out of policing, how likely it is for reform to happen, and data/research that can help give the audience perspective on the problem.

Three program examples of alternatives to policing / overpolicing will be discussed: (1) The STAR Program in Denver (2) the “5 Days Without Police” Experiment and (3) the Los Angeles County Mental Health Evaluation Team (MET) Program.

Coverage will include the roles different stakeholders play in keeping cops accountable (the police chief, police unions, the District Attorney, elected officials, etc.), body cameras as an accountability tool, why transparency is an issue within policing, and the topic of a national registry for police misconduct.
