The Whole Child Needs a Whole School Leader

We know more than ever that educators must aim to educate the whole child. But school leaders also need to be coached to be “whole.” Sean Slade has spent a career in health promotion, focusing on the whole child. His passion is coaching school leaders to reach their potential to be effective, caring educators. In this podcast, he describes his vision for coaching those who are leading schools and districts. 


ABOUT SEAN SLADE

Sean served as a senior education officer for New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia, as Project Director for consulting firm WestEd, and has advocated regularly for health promotion and educating the whole child. Sean worked for ASCD in various positions, including Director of Whole Child Programs and Senior Director of Outreach. He spent five years with UNESCO, and now he is head of BTS Spark of North America, a branch of BTS, focusing on training the next generation of educational leaders. Sean also regularly writes for publications such as Ed Week, EdSurge, and NAESP. He is the author of the book “The Power of the Whole: What is Lost by Focusing on Individual Things.”

ABOUT

Kristen Moreland is an accomplished facilitator and educational leader with over 25 years of international and domestic experience. Kristen has recently transitioned from the Pan American School in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where she served as an instructional coach for three years, to northern New Hampshire, where she is currently the Director of Teaching and Learning for the Littleton Schools in SAU 84.


After graduating from the University of Colorado, Boulder, she joined the U.S. Peace Corps and moved to Cameroon in Central Africa, where she taught English as a foreign language at a local public school. Upon completing her service, Kristen returned to teaching in the United States with a short break to complete her master's degree at the University of Denver. In 2005, she moved to Istanbul, Turkey, where she taught middle school English for five years. Back in Denver, Colorado, Kristen transitioned into an instructional coaching role, where she received extensive training in facilitation, culturally responsive pedagogy, and the needs of adult learners. Committed to growth and transformation, Kristen recently earned her EdD from Southern New Hampshire University, focusing on bringing humanity back to education.

Dr. Peter Liljedahl is a Professor of Mathematics Education in the Faculty of Education and an associate member in the Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada.


Peter serves on many editorial boards and is a senior editor of the International Journal of Science and Mathematics education. He has authored or co-authored 12 books, over 38 book chapters, 38 journal articles, and over 50 conference papers. Peter has won numerous awards and is a former high school mathematics teacher; his research is never far away from practical application in the classroom. He consults regularly with schools, and ministries of education on issues of teaching and learning, assessment, and numeracy.

NH Public School Minimum Standards (306s) with Christine Downing

The New Hampshire Minimum Standards, or Ed 306, have become a controversial topic in our schools and in the press. Yet, most of the public does not understand what these standards represent and why they are critically important for our students. On this podcast, we chat with Christine Downing, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for SAUs 32, 75, and 100, to help us unravel the “306s.”

Christine Downing is the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for SAU 32 (Plainfield), SAU 75 (Grantham), and SAU 100 (Cornish). She has 30 years in education as an NHED consultant, middle school math and science teacher, elementary principal, and central office educator. Her current volunteer project is to gather specific feedback on ED 306 from school leaders and educators to help in the process of editing the latest version of the minimum standards. Christine is passionate about supporting public schools and competency-based learning in NH.

The Minimum School Approval Standards (ED Rules 306) are being reviewed and updated. These rules impact curriculum, instruction, and assessment at the local level in all grade levels and many content areas. Specific review sessions are being conducted to obtain feedback directly from practicing educators in our local schools. Below is a list of sessions and locations along with registration links for each session. These sessions provide educators with the opportunity to learn about ED Rules 306, impact these rules have on teaching, review suggested changes, and provide feedback on the revisions. All feedback will be synthesized and presented on behalf of NH educators at a state board meeting in late September. There is no cost for this session and educators will receive 2.5 hours of professional learning credit. This session is being facilitated by Christine Downing, current Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for Cornish, Plainfield and Grantham School Districts; and former school improvement coach, Common Core Consultant, and Mathematics Specialist for NH Department of Education.This is an opportunity for educators to increase their own knowledge and application of how ED 306 standards support teaching and learning, and provide important feedback on the future of public school expectations. John is an award-winning Professor of Education at James Madison University. He works with pre‑service teachers and graduate students, as well as actively pursuing his research interests, including the science of learning and the design and measurement of classroom environments that promote student engagement and learning. John and his colleagues have presented their work at the United States Congress, the Virginia Senate, the United States Department of Education, and the Office of Science and Technology Policy at The White House. John has also served as a math and science teacher and is a prolific writer, including authoring 11 books on topics from math and science instruction, a new framework centering on PLC+, and visible learning.

Dr. John Hattie is an award-winning educational researcher and best-selling author with nearly 30 years of experience examining what works best in student learning and achievement. His notable publications include Visible Learning, Visible Learning for Teachers, Visible Learning - The Science of How We Learn, Visible Learning for Mathematics, Grades K-12, and, most recently, 10 Mindframes for Visible Learning.

Tammy Musiowsky-Borneman is an international education advisor, teacher coach, and classroom teacher and has taught and led schools in Singapore, New York City, and Edmonton. Tammy is a past president of the ASCD Emerging Leaders Alumni Affiliate (ELASCD). She values simplicity and clarity and has created a coaching model centered on short, flexible, and focused chunks of time with personalized content. Tammy has contributed content to ASCD publications, EdWeek Teacher Blog, and Achieve the Core regarding student engagement, inclusion, agency, and ways to develop positive classroom and school culture.

Christine Arnold is an Australian educator who has worked in her homeland, Japan, Singapore, and Belgium as a teacher, coach, mentor, co-teacher, coordinator, tutor, and supervisor from early childhood education to adult education in the university sector. She has served on the board of the Singapore chapter of the Special Education Network and Inclusion Association. Christine has published educational articles and has presented at various international and Australian conferences. She was a member of the founding administrative team that opened Basis Independent Silicon Valley in San Jose, and she went on to serve as principal at Meira Academy in Palo Alto. She brings several years of experience coaching teachers as well as co-founding a principals’ support group. For the last five years, she has served as an accrediting member of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
