The Gifts Compass Podcast - Introducing the GCI

The Gifts Compass Podcast - Introducing the GCI

#JungianBitsofInformation is collaborating with the Gifts Compass Inventory on a new podcast, The Gifts Compass Podcast. I join James Johnston and Anne-Liis Lääne-Sáez to talk about the Gifts Compass Inventory or GCI. The GCI offers a fresh approach to Swiss psychologist Carl Jung's original eight psychological types, the well validated and broadly acclaimed gifts. The GCI focuses on the personal growth and development of unique individuals. This is our inaugural podcast and we are so excited to share our understanding of type with you. We are passionate about type, and our aim is to help you understand type, how to use type to better understand yourself, to have better relationships at home, in a social setting or in the workplace.

James Johnston is  the author of the book, Jung's Indispensable Compass, and the lead architect for the Gifts Compass Inventory. James lives in the United States currently in northwest Ohio.

Anne-Liis Lääne-Sáez is a self awareness and mental fitness coach and works with individuals wanting to add more meaning and enjoyment to their life. Anne-Liis is from Estonia and currently living in Geneva, Switzerland.

Nicholas Toko is the blogger and podcaster of #JungianBitsofInformation, an organizational effectiveness consultant and training as a Jungian Psychoanalyst in Zurich, Switzerland where he currently lives. Nicholas was born in Uganda and grew up in London, UK.

Podcast Notes

Some terminology from Jung's Indispensable Compass is mentioned during the podcast. Each is a masculine archetype and a description of  their characteristics. Their insights could be applied to women as well as men. We could use their metaphorical descriptors because their archetypal characterizations are congruent with the GCI's Four Functional Roles of the Psyche: Reflecting, Formulating, Associating, Producing (Johnston, Jung's Indispensable Compass: 186)

Lover

The Lover Heading indicates an artistic, creative, poetic way of life. People who favor the Lover Heading have a well-developed, rich, imaginative inner life that is directed by their ideals and their concern for people. They love deeply, being passionate about relationships and values.

Magician

The Magician Heading indicates a highly creative, thought-provoking, imaginative, and often philosophical way of life. People who favor the Magician Heading have a well-developed, rich imaginative inner life that is directed by their insightful and productive thinking. They enjoy the thrilling process of creating something new or discerning the solution to a difficult problem.

Sovereign

The Sovereign Heading indicates a way of life that is oriented to people—to their practical needs, their emotional and physical wellness, and to harmony among them. People who favor the Sovereign Heading enjoy relationships, sustaining organizations and groups, and providing social leadership. Harmonious relationships are their perpetual aim.

Warrior

The Warrior Heading indicates a highly practical, down-to-earth, productive way of life. People who favor the Warrior Heading enjoy finding solutions to practical problems, setting goals, and constructing order that improves or organizes existing conditions. Constructive and orderly achievement is their perpetual aim.

Rotimi is a therapeutic counsellor and clinical supervisor with extensive experience in community and NHS counselling services in the United Kingdom. He is part of the Leadership Team of the Black, African and Asian Therapy Network (BAATN) and the founder and director of 'Black Men on the Couch', a special interest project focussing on psychotherapy and identity politics of African and Caribbean men and boys. He has held leadership roles in the wellbeing area at several universities and has worked as an independent facilitator, trainer and advisor on various transformational leadership programmes in the UK and overseas. Rotimi is an author too. He is the author of 'This Book Could Help: The Men’s Headspace Manual' and is currently the Director of Student Welfare and Support Services at the University of Oxford. Rotimi is a highly-respected counselling practitioner in his own right and I’m really pleased to have him on the podcast as we explore psychotherapy and psychoanalytic training from our perspectives as black, African men who both grew up in the UK.

For more information about BAATN check out their website at www.baatn.org.uk. BAATN is a support network for qualified and training psychotherapists and psychoanalysts. If you are of Black and/or Asian descent and would like to expand your network with like-minded people, people of African descent or for advice, guidance or training, you'll find some great connections and resources at BAATN. And check out Rotimi's book, This Book Could Help: The Men's Headspace Manual, it has some great practical tips for managing your mental health and well-being.

The Inferior Function - Extraverted Sensation vs Introverted Intuition

The Inferior Function - Extraverted Sensation vs Introverted Intuition

In the latest #JungianBitsofInformation podcast, I had a great chat with Sonia Ouertani-Starkey https://www.linkedin.com/in/soniaouertani/

Our friendship, in Jungian terms, is a psychological tension - I have a preference for Extraverted Sensing and Sonia has a preference for Introverted Intuition. According to analytical psychology, we hold the 'Inferior Function' for each other so I thought it would be interesting to explore our inferior functions through dialogue with each other.

Sonia is a communication all-rounder and passionate with a fascination for Jungian psychology and themes like free will and destiny, paradoxes, complexity, dynamics between the individual and collective psyches, and transitions in transformation.

French and Tunisian, she lived a major shift when the 'Revolution' in Tunisia triggered her own. 10 years of professional circumambulation documenting her path and a semi burnout later, a second energetic shift resulted in 2021. She surrendered to the emergence of an internal agenda waiting for its time through a solo incubation and a tridimensionnel approach where personal, professional and academic are addressed as complementary and echoing each other. Catching up with a decade of collating ideas, diving deep within to face certain truths in an attempt to translate them into more linear terms, she started letting her guiding principles become her specialism, imprinting them in her overarching concept. She realised that she hadn't been chasing her dreams but rather they chased her as she was on her initiation path.

Now, Sonia is a researcher in progress and the founder of SOS FROM WITHIN Ltd /All•One Within, working to bring together the depth to the surface and at meta level in communications, along with the role comms could play to help organisations contribute to building deeper collective sense of harmony and unity.

A fascinating conversation with overtones of extraverted sensing and introverted intuition.

The Unconscious in the Workplace with Dario Nardi [Part II]

The Unconscious in the Workplace with Dario Nardi [Part II]

Joining me on #JungianBitsofInformation blogcast is Dario Nardi PhD. Dario is an international author, researcher, and speaker in neuroscience, personality, education, games, AI, and body-mind practices. He taught at UCLA for 17 years and won their Teacher of the Year award in 2011. People know him for “Neuroscience of Personality”, “8 Keys to Self-Leadership”, “Jung on Yoga”, and other books. I was very excited and hugely honoured to have Dario on the blogcast.

We explored the unconscious in the workplace, in particular, we explored the question: The Unconscious versus Artificial Intelligence [AI] - who would win the race? We were inspired in our reflections on this question by George Lucas' Electronic Labyrinth THX1138 4EB, a 1971 American social science fiction film directed by Lucas in his first feature film directorial debut. THX1138 is set in a dystopian future in which humans [representing the Unconscious] are controlled through android police [representing AI] and mandatory use of drugs that suppress emotions [potential impact of AI on human behaviour]. THX 1138 was developed from Lucas's student film of the same name which he made in 1967 while attending the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.

Join us for a deeply informative and insightful discussion with Dario.

In Search Of....The Feeling Function with Douwe Dijksterhuis

In Search Of....The Feeling Function with Douwe Dijksterhuis

Part of a new Blogcast series called 'In Search Of....', I explore the Feeling Function with Douwe Dijksterhuis; Douwe is an anthropologist, High School teacher and musician from Holland and is currently living in Trinidad and Tobago. Douwe is a self-confessed 'feeling type' so I thought he would be a perfect guest as we explore one of the Four Functions of the psyche; Feeling [Sensation, Intuition, Feeling, Thinking], how it expresses itself in his personal and work life, and the behavioural characteristics associated with the Feeling Function. When the Feeling Function is expressed 'outwardly' or extraverted, people who are predisposed to this type of consciousness are often the standard bearers of conventional values and harmonious relationships in the workplace. Join us as we explore the Feeling Function.

The Unconscious

The Unconscious is an untapped potential source of personal transformation. It can help you to improve your resilience, better understand yourself and others, develop more effective personal and work-based relationships, find creative solutions to long standing problems, and a source of inspiration, knowledge and wisdom. All in all, it's a good thing to get your head around. In my latest blogcast, I talk little bit about the Unconscious.

The Persona and Personal Authenticity

*note there were some technical issues with the recording. You might hear a time lag between the speakers at two or more points during the podcast. It shouldn't stop you enjoying the podcast.

I'm joined by Anissa Oukhiar, host of Brown, Brainy and Beautiful podcast and an Organisation Design specialist. Anissa and I both share an interest in personal authenticity [and organisation design!] so I thought it would be great to have a conversation with her about what it means to be authentic. We explore authenticity from her personal perspective and mine from a Jungian perspective, sharing how my journey to authenticity emerged from a sudden collaboration of two psychological functions: Extraverted Sensation [my lead function] paired up with Introverted Intuition [my inferior and less developed function], their collaboration led me to an unexpected and transformative journey to Argentina, India and to train as a Jungian Analyst. Check out Anissa's podcast on Spotify where she is 'Keepin' it real' with inspirational conversations about topics that matter with people from different walks of life.

The Lockdown and Me - the impact of the lockdown on my personality type

What has been the impact of the global lockdown on my preferred and lead function, Extraverted Sensation?

The UK is currently under lockdown. We hope to emerge from the restrictions soon. The impact of the lockdown on my personality type has led to unexpected outcomes.

In this blogcast, I explore the impact of the lockdown on my preferred and lead function, Extraverted Sensation, one of the Eight Psychological Types in the Jungian Personality Model. The impact led me to launch #JungianBitsofInformation and to become a Covid19 Vaccinator.

The Launch of #JungianBitsofInformation

The Launch of #JungianBitsofInformation

Hey everyone, and welcome to my new website www.nicholastoko.com where you will find my blog #JungianBitsofInformation; a blog dedicated to exploring the unconscious in the workplace, specifically, the dynamics between the individual psyche and the workplace. I am really excited about my new venture which I hope has something for everyone, whether you are interested in Jungian Analytical Psychology, interested in better understanding your personality, perhaps you are looking to transform the culture of your workplace or business through people. Jungian Psychology gives you an x-ray vision into the psyche of the individual, both conscious and unconscious, to discover the seeds of your individual growth and potential. I appreciate Jungian ideas can be very complex to understand, therefore the aim of #JungianBitsofInformation is to distil or in social media terms "#hashtag" this vast body of information into "bits of information" so you don't have to.

The Feeling Function and Workplace Conflict

The Feeling Function and Workplace Conflict

I am joined in the #JungianBitsofInformation Blogcast by Richard Owen, Business Psychologist, Career Transition Coach and Personality Assessment Specialist. We look at the Feeling Function, one of the four main mental processes of the Jungian theory of the Personality.

When the Feeling Function is outwardly expressed; it validates, affirms and relates to others and when inwardly expressed; it judges, appraises and establishes the value of others. But what happens when the Feeling Functon is undeveloped, untrained or repressed in the Personality?

The weakly developed Feeling Function manifests in the Personality of the individual as a repelling irritability - grumpy, picky and fault finding. These are some of the behaviours which propel workplace grievances to stratospheric and unresolvable levels.

Richard and I explore the Feeling function as a practical way for organisations to resolve conflict and to address discordant behaviours in the workplace. A harmonious workplace = productive and profitable company.

#JungianBitsofInformation a blog dedicated to exploring the unconscious in the workplace, specifically, the dynamics between the individual psyche and the workplace.
