Free Markets Green Earth 015: Our Lungs Are Full Of Meat?
In today's episode we take a look at the conversation they were trying to force us to have in regards to the fires in the Amazon in Brazil. What does meat have to do with this? As with so many environmental issues big agribusiness absolutely factors in. They come up with many suggestions to combat the issue. Some suggest veganism, some suggest eating bugs, some suggest eating our dead...wait what? This was an actual discussion scientists are having. Personally I think there are real conversations to be had in regards to what is happening with the Amazon, biodiversity being a huge concern I have. Subsidization and government interference are some of the biggest drivers of moves toward mono-crops and factory farming. Instead we get lies trying to paint this year as being worse than most as far as these fires go instead of barely out of the bottom third. This doesn't even address why the fires happen and to what end. I'm not personally about making food more difficult for poor modernizing nations. The coverage seemed to disappear immediately after the democratic town hall suggested trillions of dollars of new spending that we don't have to drastically rework society with a model that has been proven over and over again to fail. Here's a Washington Post article that has a bunch of information on the issue. Check It Out. If there's a topic you want to hear more about drop us a line and let us know. Free Markets Green Earth 014: Who's River Is This Anyway?
If you thought planning government and economics was impossible, try planning nature... We all know nature can be a chaotic beast paying no heed to the whims of humans, but what happens when humans try to lay out a plan for mother nature? What happens when those plans are made by governments? What happens to the recourse of individuals who own private property that fall within the boundaries of these government made nature-plans? Check out episode 12 of Free Markets, Green Earth when Nicky P. and the Liberty Hippie decide to talk about definitions. No, this isn't a lesson on grammar, rather it's a look at how the FDA and the USDA use definitions to "protect" the consumer, when in fact, it provides no protection and actually leaves the consumer in a conundrum of misguided principles. Free Markets Green Earth 011: Animals Are People Too?
Join the Liberty Hippies this week as they talk about animals and some new bi-partisan legislation meant to protect our furry friends by making animal cruelty a nationwide felony, punishable by up to seven years in prison. They discuss how the legislation - like most legislation - sounds good from the outset, but leaves plenty of room to take the slippery slope down to policing cultural norms. After nine episodes, it's about time Nicky and Ben get down to why they're here and how they got here. In this episode the two liberty hippies talk a bit about their genesis into the world of environmentalism and the different paths and experiences they took to finally realize that the best way to protect the environment is through the work of the individual. Free Markets Green Earth 009: The Mushroom King
If there is one kingdom of life that is routinely ignored and completely undervalued its that of the Fungus. There are so many uses for fungus and their mycelium, but the field of mycology is still growing and its uses are still being discovered. In this episode, the Liberty Hippie and Nicky P. talk about the many uses of mycelium and fungus that are being used across many different fields from meat substitutes to plastic digestion to biopesticides. The uses for mycelium will continue to grow through free-market demand and research. Stay tuned. Free Markets Green Earth 008: For The Chid'rin
Kid's movies are low brain power, easy watching films that allow a time to "bond" with your kids while allowing the adult brain to relax and reset; that is, of course, as long as the film doesn't present mind-bending, indoctrinating, anti-human propaganda. Unfortunately, many kid's movies seem to be going this route. This week the Liberty Hippie and Nicky P. take a look at Over the Hedge, a film from 2006 that only has a handful of human characters, but presents them with near zero redeeming qualities. And of course, what would an episode be if there wasn't copious amounts of rabbit trails leading down a variety of free-market-green paths? Free Markets Green Earth 007: Big Daddy FDA
This week on Free Markets, Green Earth, Nicky P. and the Liberty Hippie talk about one of their favorite alphabet soup agencies, the FDA! This fine agency has been put in place to make sure the American people don't suffer from faulty pharmaceutical drugs, E. coli tainted lettuce, and watered down milk, but yet, they get it so wrong. Free Markets Green Earth 006: King $ On The Mountain
This week on Free Markets, Green Earth, Nicky P. and the Liberty Hippie decide to talk about the mountains. They examine the biggest mountain in the world, and talk about the all the death and litter the media is constantly reporting on, before they examine and wonder what it might look like should a private entity purchase the mountain. Of course a discussion of government ownership of land wouldn't be complete without some talk about unintended consequences, and the insulation from damages the government provides itself. Free Markets Green Earth 005: **** New York Just A Bit More
This week on Free Markets, Green Earth, Nicky P. and the Liberty Hippie find themselves entangled in more legislative non-sense from the fine state of New York, and they're not talking about an individuals $500k water bill, or plastic bag bans. This time the two discuss New York's proposed farm bill that has been lingering in Albany for almost fifteen years, but thanks to State government all falling to one side, it's likely that the state of New York will no longer allow individual farm workers to negotiate their own work conditions. The new bill will require farmers to pay workers overtime, introducing a slew of problems for both workers and farm owners. Nicky P. and the Liberty Hippie examined the different sides of the argument, discussed the numerous problems this legislation poses, and of course, examined why this bill won't actually help workers, but will help the State. Free Markets Green Earth 004: The Most Dangerous Invasive Species
Taking a break from examining articles from the all across the internet, Nicky P. and the Liberty Hippie decide to wax philosophical about the naturalness of human beings and their interactions with the environment. What spurred this question into our existence? A facebook post about non-native Tegus in Florida eating chicken eggs and wreaking havoc on the native ecosystem. From here, the Liberty Hippie started to wonder, "should there be an attempt made to eradicate non-native species introduced by humans?"
