Welcome to the last episode of the the first season of Nigerian Headlines: Past and Present. This is episode 4 of the June 12th Annulment story. 

For about two months, MKO Abiola has been out of the country gathering international support for his June 12th mandate. In Nigerian politics, a lot can happen in two months and with Abiola out of the picture, it’s enough time for a series of decisions and events to unfold that eventually make way for Sani Abacha to assume power as Nigeria’s next military head of state.

It was the election that was supposed to mark the end of military rule and a return to civilian rule. But instead, it became the election that plunged the country into a political crisis. This story is about those events and the characters that were central to what happened after June 12th.
