Real Talk on Making Babies

Real Talk on Making Babies

This week we are having some real talk with Jilchristina Vest about the topic of making babies, particularly when it comes to queer identities and people of color. We will talk about how queer relationships are subjected to compete with, and mimic, heterosexual relationship structures-despite the problems it may cause and the oppression it perpetuates in our communities. In this episode we dissect how these norms affect reproduction and child rearing for queer couples. We will also discuss how colorism impacts the fertility industry, and the different ways that black people are discriminated against based on the lightness or darkness of their skin.

Jilchristina Vest was born and raised in Chicago and moved to San Francisco at age 19. After earning degrees in Black Studies, Women’s Studies, and Education from SFSU and USF in 2000, she bought a historic Victorian in West Oakland, known for its rich history of activism and legacy of the Black Panther Party. Jil traveled with an amazing production team, bringing brilliant music and artists to the live stage. She founded, produced, and curated the West Oakland Mural Project, a community-based art and history project that gave birth to the 2000 sq ft “Women of the Black Panther Party” mural on the side of her home and the Mini Museum at the Mural on the first floor. Jil is a known Kindness Queen, Joy Junkie, Justice Warrior and a Fierce Activist.
