No Country for Otakus || Let's Chat Anime: Record Of The Grandcrest War - Ep 57

Once upon a time, the world was ruled by Chaos. Chaos is one of many features of this mysterious world. Its concentration distorts the laws of nature, which leads to the emergence of demons and natural disasters, which people call "the scourge of Chaos."  Then came "a man with a holy seal" and "returned the order." He was called the Lord. He was the only one who could use the seal and therefore protected people from Chaos. As a result of his actions, the territories occupied by people expanded instantly.  So the Lord must be. But, everything has its own good and bad side. When the level of Chaos has gone down, the Crests have become instruments used in power struggles. At the moment, all people are divided between the Fantasia Union and the Factory Alliance.  Over time, the two power blocs' rulers decided to arrange the wedding of their heirs to unite and complete the creation of the Great Seal - a symbol of order for the eternal peace. However, both dukes were eliminated, and wars were unleashed on their territories with new forces.  At the center of this battle was a student from the Magical Academy named Siluca, on which the earl named Lord Villar laid his eyes. The purpose of Siluca was to conclude an agreement with Villar, and on the way to Altirk (where Villar ruled),  she was surrounded by hostile soldiers, but Lord Theo came to her aid. And they begin their adventures.

Momokichi Momoi, the mob boss owner of a professional baseball team known as "the Peach Twisters",  has a unique way of dealing with ineffective players: killing them. His daughter, Momomi,  is twice as twisted as her father. Mikura and the Danger Service Agency are hired by a mysterious  old man to kidnap Momokichi. But during that attempt they run afoul of Momomi. Before the resulting  firefight, Momokichi dies when his head falls on a ventilation pipe. Now Mikura and the D.S.A. have  to come up with a new plan before they end up as Momomi's next target.  Mikura, Kurokawa, and Harada are the three members of the Danger Service Agency (DSA).  Mikura is the brawn of the group, Harada is the brains, and Kurokawa is just a bitter  ex-cop who likes to think he's in charge. They'll take on any job as long as it involves  much danger and, of course, money. Their biggest case, however, could prove to be finding  out why someone wants Kurokawa assassinated.  The DSA's headquarters is an old red British double-decker bus that has been converted into living  quarters for the three main characters. It has been placed on the rooftop of a two-story building  which houses Mugiyama's barber shop on the ground floor. They drive an old-style pink Volkswagen Beetle.

While on the surface the public believes the war is being fought between machines,  in reality, the Juggernauts are being piloted by humans and all of them are the Eighty-Six, the  designation given to the sub-humans of the Eighty-Sixth Sector who are persecuted and stripped of  their rights by the racist-led Alba government.  Major Vladilena "Lena" Milizé is an Alba noble and military officer in the Republic's Military  who is assigned as a Handler of the Spearhead Squadron of the Eastern Front, an elite unit composed  entirely of Eighty-Sixer veterans who have earned names led by their squad leader,  Shinei "Undertaker" Nouzen. No Country for Otakus || Let's Chat Anime: To Your Eternity - Ep 50

To Your Eternity (Japanese: 不滅のあなたへ, Hepburn: Fumetsu no Anata e, lit. "To You, the Immortal") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ōima. It has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine since November 2016, with individual chapters collected by Kodansha into sixteen tankōbon volumes as of August 2021. The story is about an immortal being, Fushi, who takes on multiple forms, including that of an abandoned white-haired village boy and his white wolf in order to stimulate as it learns what it is to be truly human.

Ōima, inspired by her own grandmother's death, aimed to write about survival and the character Fushi, who initially is an emotionless stone but gradually develops a self and personality as a result of interacting with humans, young and old alike. In contrast to her previous work, A Silent Voice, To Your Eternity puts little focus on the cast's past but instead, upon the future.

To Your Eternity has been well received in Japan, earning many awards and major sales. Critical response to the series debut was positive, based on the emotional focus on the villagers and Fushi to the point of often earning perfect scores. Despite some skeptical commentary on subsequent chapters lacking the same impact, Fushi's continuous character arc was praised while Ōima's artistry enjoyed positive reviews due to its detailed facial expressions and environments. An anime television series adaptation of the manga, produced by Brain's Base, aired from April to August 2021 on Japan's NHK Educational TV; a second season produced by Drive will premiere in October 2022. In North America, the manga is licensed by Kodansha USA for a digital and printed English release.

The series begins in 12th century Japan and centers on Kuro, a character based loosely on the legendary Japanese swordsman Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Kuro and his servant, Benkei, meet a beautiful and mysterious woman named Kuromitsu while on the run from Kuro's elder brother, who seeks his life. Kuromitsu and Kuro fall in love, but he soon discovers that she harbors a terrible secret: she is a vampiric immortal. Following an attack by his pursuers, Kuro is badly injured and must imbibe Kuromitsu's blood to save his own life. Kuro is then betrayed and attacked by Benkei, who has been subverted by a shadowy organization called the Red Army, and Kuro's head is severed, which interferes with his transformation into a fully immortal being.

Kuro loses consciousness and wakes up centuries later in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian Japan with his memories of the past century missing. The surviving citizens have fallen under constant oppression by the Red Army, and Kuro is quickly found and recruited by an underground revolutionary movement called Haniwa. The remaining episodes follow Kuro's fight with the Red Army and its host of elite warriors, who have been hunting Kuromitsu for her blood, believing it contains the secret to eternal life; focusing on Kuro's quest to find his inexplicably lost love.

The story follows the life of Tomoya Okazaki, from adolescence to adulthood. As an average high school student, he meets many people in his last year at school, including five girls whose individual problems he helps resolve,  and his life is further detailed after graduating from high school. The gameplay of Clannad follows a plot that branches into different scenarios based on various courses of interaction by the player character.  The game was ranked as the best-selling PC game sold in Japan for the time of its release, and charted in the national top 50 several more times afterwards. Key went on to produce an adult spin-off titled Tomoyo After:  It's a Wonderful Life in November 2005, which expanded on the scenario of Tomoyo Sakagami, one of the five heroines from Clannad.

Clannad: After Story, the sequel to the critically acclaimed slice-of-life series Clannad, begins after Tomoya Okazaki and Nagisa Furukawa graduate from high school.  Together, they experience the emotional rollercoaster of growing up. Unable to decide on a course for his future, Tomoya learns the value of a strong work ethic and discovers the strength of Nagisa's support.  Through the couple's dedication and unity of purpose, they push forward to confront their personal problems, deepen their old relationships, and create new bonds.

No Country for Otakus Podcast - Let's Chat Anime - Your Lie in April - Ep 41

Your Lie in April is a Japanese romantic drama manga series written  and illustrated by Naoshi Arakawa. It has been adapted into an anime television series and multiple stage productions.  The manga was serialized in Kodansha's shōnen manga magazine Monthly Shōnen Magazine from  April 2011 to May 2015. No Country for Otakus Podcast - Let's Chat Anime - Inuyashiki - Ep 34

Inuyashiki (いぬやしき) is a Japanese science fiction manga series written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku. It was serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Evening from  January 2014 to July 2017,  with its chapters compiled in ten tankōbon volumes.
An anime television series adaptation produced by MAPPA aired on Fuji TV's late night programming block Noitamina from October to December 2017.  A live-action film adaptation premiered in Japan in April 2018.

Inuyashiki Ichiro is an older, friendless man with an uncaring family. One fateful evening in a nearly empty public park, he is struck by an explosion of extraterrestrial  origin, and his body is replaced by an incredibly powerful, but still outwardly human, mechanical body. He quickly realizes the extent of his body's powers,  and after saving a homeless man being beaten by a pack of teenagers, he decides to dedicate himself to doing good, using his powers to heal those with incurable diseases  and fight crime.

However, a teenager who was with him at the time of the explosion, Shishigami Hiro, had the same fate as Ichiro, but unlike Inuyashiki,  Shishigami becomes a psychopath who goes about using his newfound abilities to murder various people, from classmates that annoy him to innocent families,  including young children, just for amusement. His acts of merciless cruelty bring him the attention of the police,  who can do nothing to stop him. Hiro becomes the most wanted criminal in the country.

No Country for Otakus Podcast: Let's Chat Anime - Read or Die - Ep 33

R.O.D the TV is a 26-episode anime television series, animated by J.C.Staff and Studio Deen and produced by Aniplex, directed by Koji Masunari and scripted by Hideyuki Kurata, about the adventures of three paper-manipulating sisters, Michelle, Maggie and Anita, who become the bodyguards of Nenene Sumiregawa, a famous Japanese writer. Featuring music by Taku Iwasaki, the series is a sequel to the Read or Die OVA.

The series begins in 2006, five years after the "I-Jin" incident detailed in the Read or Die OVA. Yomiko Readman (a.k.a. "The Paper", agent of British Library Task Force) has supposedly gone missing, and Nenene Sumiregawa, her former student and best friend, is still in Tokyo after her parents moved to the United States. Nenene has not written a book since Yomiko disappeared, as she has become lonely and frustrated that her sensei has never read her last book, and she feels she can't write again until she hears Yomiko's reaction to the book, so Nenene often disappears for long periods of time searching for Yomiko, and has been periodically doing so ever since her "disappearance".

No Country for Otakus Podcast : Let's Chat Anime - Bastard!! - Ep 30

In Bastard!!, the Kingdom of Metallicana is attacked by the Four Lords of Havoc. This prompts the high priest to ask his daughter to awaken Dark Schneider, a wizard and  former leader of the Riders, from within the body of 14-year-old Luche Renren.  Bastard!!'s history is about sorcery, revenge, and other power struggles in a Dungeons & Dragons–like world.  It is a dystopian world, where people need magic to survive against wild beasts, and evil monsters. There are four kingdoms, each one the protector of one of the  four seals that keep the God of Destruction in stasis.  While the first half of the manga follows most a theme similar to Dungeons & Dragons scenarios, it later also focuses on aspects such as beliefs, morals and religions.

No Country for Otakus Podcast : Let's Chat Anime - Castle Vania Ep 28

No Country for Otakus Podcast : Let's Chat Anime - Castle Vania Ep 28

Castlevania is an American anime-style adult animated streaming television series on Netflix produced by Frederator Studios. Based on the Japanese video game series of the same name by Konami, the first two seasons adapt the 1989 entry Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and follow Trevor Belmont, Alucard and Sypha Belnades as they defend the nation of Wallachia from Dracula and his minions. Characters and elements from the 2005 entry Castlevania: Curse of Darkness are also featured beginning in the second season.

The series was originally planned as a film, developed by producer Kevin Kolde and his company Project 51. Kolde had a contract for a script with writer Warren Ellis in 2007; the project entered development hell until about 2015, when Adi Shankar boarded the project and it was picked up by streaming service Netflix. Powerhouse Animation Studios joined the team and production commenced. Its art style is heavily influenced by Japanese anime and Ayami Kojima's artwork in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night with the production team including staff members who worked in the Japanese anime industry.

The series premiered on Netflix on July 7, 2017, and was renewed for an expanded second season of eight episodes on the same day; the second season premiered on October 26, 2018. A ten-episode third season was greenlit by Netflix and released on March 5, 2020. The series ended with the release of its fourth season on May 13, 2021. A new series set in the Castlevania universe is in the works at Netflix.

Let's Chat Anime: Gatchaman - No Country for Otakus - Ep 26

Science Ninja Team Gatchaman is a Japanese animated franchise about a five-member superhero team created by Tatsuo Yoshida and produced by Tatsunoko Productions. The original anime series, which debuted in 1972, was eponymously entitled Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman and is best known in the English-speaking world as the adaptation entitled Battle of the Planets (1978). The series had additional English adaptations with G-Force: Guardians of Space (1986) and ADV Films' uncut 2005 release. Tatsunoko also uses the official translation Science Commando Gatchaman in related products and media.

The original Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman series was followed by an animated film and two direct sequel series, Gatchaman II (1978) and Gatchaman Fighter (1979).

Gatchaman  is a three-part original video animation (OVA) based on the popular 1970s anime Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. It was released in Japan and the United States during the mid-1990s. This version of Gatchaman is set in the year 2066 where the evil leader of the nation of Hontwall is threatening to take over the planet. Scientists from the International Science Organization are disappearing and only five teenage heroes, the Science Ninja team, can stop the disaster. The OVAs were licensed by Urban Vision through Harmony Gold USA and were released on VHS and DVD. At Anime Boston 2013, Sentai Filmworks had announced that they have rescued the OVA series along with the original 1970s series for a DVD re-release in October. The series was made available for streaming through Crunchyroll.

Let's Chat Anime: Claymore - No Country for Otakus - Ep 25

Let's Chat Anime: Claymore - No Country for Otakus - Ep 25

Claymore (stylized as CLAYMORE) is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Norihiro Yagi.  It premiered in the May 2001 issue of Monthly Shōnen Jump, where it continued until the magazine was shut down in June 2007.

The series is set on a fictional medieval island where humans are plagued by Yoma, humanoid shape-shifters that feed on humans. A mysterious group, known as The Organization, creates human-Yoma hybrids to kill Yoma for a fee. These female warriors wear armored uniforms. The public refer to them as "Claymores", alluding to their claymore swords, or "Silver-eyed Witches", due to their silver eyes.

Yoma and Claymore warriors alike are powered by a demonic energy, Yoki, which allows shape-shifting and extreme strength. When warriors use too much Yoki, they "awaken", becoming a super-Yoma called an Awakened Being. The act of awakening is likened to the feeling of sexual climax, so while both male and female warriors existed in the past only the women proved to be successful warriors and so the creation of male Claymores stopped altogether.

The island world is divided into 47 districts, with one warrior assigned to each. Claymore warriors No. 1 through 47 are ranked on their baseline Yoki potential, strength, agility, intelligence, sensing and leadership. A warrior's rank rises and falls according to the warrior's strength in relation to other warriors. It is unclear whether the warriors strength comes from training/experience or if the potential lies within the warriors themselves.

Let's Chat Anime: One Outs - No Country for Otakus - Ep 22

Toua Tokuchi is an athlete by profession, but a reckless gambler at heart. On the streets of Okinawa, he uses nothing but his wits and a "fastball" peaking at a mere 134 kmph to  somehow achieve 499 wins in the game of "One Outs," a simplified version of baseball between the pitcher and one batter. Amazed by Toua's unique prowess on the mound, veteran  slugger Hiromichi Kojima artfully scouts the pitcher for his long unsuccessful team, the Saikyou Saitama Lycaons. Kojima desperately hopes Toua will lead them to the  championship; however, Tsuneo Saikawa, the mercenary owner of the Lycaons, sees the vastly talented pitcher as a threat to the income generated by the team. Rising to the challenge of swaying the owner,

Toua suggests a one-of-a-kind "One Outs" contract: every out Toua pitches will earn him five million yen, but with every run he gives up, he will lose fifty million yen.

Let's Chat Anime: King's Game - No Country for Otakus - Ep 21

Let's Chat Anime: King's Game - No Country for Otakus - Ep 21

About

Monster (stylized as MONSTER; sometimes referred to as "Naoki Urasawa's Monster") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa.  It was published by Shogakukan in their Big Comic Original magazine between 1994 and 2001, with the chapters collected and reprinted into 18 tankōbon volumes.  The story revolves around Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese surgeon living in Germany whose life enters turmoil after getting himself involved with Johan Liebert,  one of his former patients, who is revealed to be a dangerous serial killer.

Plot

Dr. Kenzo Tenma is a young Japanese brain surgeon, working at Eisler Memorial Hospital in Düsseldorf, West Germany. Tenma is dissatisfied with the political bias of the  hospital in treating patients, and seizes the chance to change things after a massacre brings fraternal twins Johan and Anna Liebert into the hospital. Johan has a gunshot  wound to his head, and Anna mutters about killing; Tenma operates on Johan instead of the mayor, who arrived later. Johan is saved, but Mayor Roedecker dies; Tenma loses  his social standing. Director Heinemann and the other doctors in Tenma's way are mysteriously murdered, and both children disappear from the hospital. The police suspect  Tenma, but they have no evidence and can only question him.

Nine years later, Tenma is Chief of Surgery at Eisler Memorial. After saving a criminal named Adolf Junkers, Junkers mutters about a "monster."  Tenma returns with a clock for Junkers, he finds the guard in front of Junkers' room dead and Junkers gone. Following the trail to the construction site of a  half-finished building near the hospital, Tenma finds Junkers held at gunpoint. Junkers warns him against coming closer and pleads with him to run away.  Tenma refuses, and the man holding the gun is revealed to be Johan Liebert. Despite Tenma's attempts to reason with him, Johan shoots Junkers.  Telling Tenma he could never kill the man who saved his life, he walks off into the night, with Tenma too shocked to stop him.

Tenma is suspected by the police, particularly BKA Inspector Lunge, and he tries to find more information about Johan. He soon discovers that the boy's sister is living a happy  life as an adopted daughter; the only traces of her terrible past are a few nightmares. Tenma finds Anna, who was subsequently named Nina by her foster parents, on her birthday;  he keeps her from Johan, but is too late to stop him from murdering her foster parents. Tenma eventually learns the origins of this "monster": from the former East Germany's  attempt to use a secret orphanage known as "511 Kinderheim" to create perfect soldiers through psychological reprogramming, to the author of children's books used in a eugenics  experiment in the former Czechoslovakia. Tenma learns the scope of the atrocities committed by this "monster", and vows to fix the mistake he made by saving Johan's life.

In an attempt to save both Nagasumi and Sun's lives, Sun's family (which is the head of a mermaid Yakuza group) reluctantly decides that the two are to be married.  Sun's father Gōzaburō is enraged about his daughter's sudden marriage. Between Gōzaburō's constant attempts on his life and the madcap antics of a slew of antagonists,  Nagasumi has a hard time transitioning into his new married lifestyle.

Let's Chat Anime: Made in Abyss - No Country for Otakus - Ep 14!

Let's Chat Anime: Made in Abyss - No Country for Otakus - Ep 14!

An orphaned girl named Riko lives in the Belchero Orphanage in the town of Orth. The town surrounds a strange,  giant hole going deep into the earth, which is commonly called the Abyss. The Abyss harbors artifacts and remnants of a civilization long gone, and is therefore the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and  dangerous descents into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. Returning from the Abyss can be dangerous as "the Curse of the Abyss," a mysterious and potentially fatal malady, manifests upon ascension.  The deeper one goes, the more acute the effects of the curse; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences. Some legendary Cave Raiders earn the title of White Whistle, one of them being Riko's mother, Lyza.

Let's Chat Anime: Golden Boy - No Country for Otakus - Ep 12

In this episode me and Dwayne have the time of our lives as we cover one of the best six episode arcs ever. Join us! Laugh and enjoy as we dive into the classic Golden Boy!!!

Golden Boy is a Japanese comedy manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuya Egawa about a 25-year-old freeter, pervert, and "travelling student" named Kintaro Oe. Kintaro has done various jobs as he quests around Japan in pursuit of knowledge.

His ventures include computer programming, housekeeping, teaching, the culinary arts, and most of all, studying.  Kintaro is also often seen demonstrating the skills he's learned in previous chapters to overcome challenges faced in the current one.

He's also adept in martial arts, but does not fight unless he's angered, and ordinarily just takes a beating.

Let's Chat Anime: Shiki! - No Country for Otakus - Ep 11 - Halloween Special!!!

Let's Chat Anime: Shiki! - No Country for Otakus - Ep 11 - Halloween Special!!!

Happy Halloween!! Me and Dwayne talk a stroll down a horrifying road of the anime Shiki, a deep psychological thriller. We discuss the lines crossed in this story.

We also cover the Netflix series Blood of Zeus!

Fifteen-year-old Megumi Shimizu dreamed of a glamorous life in the big city; however, her unexpected death in the quiet village of Sotoba marks the beginning of what appears to be a ferocious epidemic that turns the hot summer into a season of blood and terror. A young doctor named Toshio Ozaki begins to doubt the nature of the disease and comes to understand  that to discover the truth, he must abandon his humanity. Meanwhile, Natsuno Yuuki, an antisocial youth from the city, is haunted by the sudden death of Megumi and must realize the pain of friendship in the face of his own tragedy. Toshio and Natsuno form an unlikely pair as they work together to save Sotoba before it transforms into a ghost town of vampires. Shiki,  adapted from the horror novel written by Fuyumi Ono, goes beyond the average vampire story. It tells the tragic tale of survival in a world where one cannot easily distinguish between good and evil. Abandoned by God, the Shiki, as the vampires call themselves, have only their will to live as they clash with the fear of the paranoid/unbelieving villagers. Shiki explores the boundary that separates man from monster.
