Episode 35 - Injury Impoverished: Workplace Accidents, Capitalism, and Law in the Progressive Era with Nate Holdren
In this special episode, Jules speaks with Professor Nate Holdren about his book Injury Impoverished: Workplace Accidents, Capitalism, and Law in the Progressive Era. Professor Holdren's book recently received an honorable mention for the Merle Curti Intellectual History Award, and Nate Holdren is a Marxist Historian and US Legal Historian at Drake University. *This conversation was recorded during a thunderstorm, so we've edited a few storm clouds into our conversation to depict when our conversation was cut off due to losing power.  Thank you again to Professor Holdren for rolling with tech issues during the course of this episode.   Additional Links Below… Nate Holdren's Twitter, Faculty Page Injury Impoverished: Workplace Accidents, Capitalism, and Law in the Progressive Era Maximillian Alvarez for In These Times Magazine, "The Painful History of Injury in the Workplace" Maximillian Alvarez for The Real News Network, "What Do Workers Really Lose When They're Injured on the Job?" Episode 34 - Pt. 6 Dangerous Minds, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and the Return of the Far Right with Ronald Beiner
Jules speaks with Professor Ronald Beiner about his book Dangerous Minds: Nietzsche, Heidegger, and the Return of the Far Right. Ronald Beiner is Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto. Contemporary far-right and neofascist movements continue to be inspired by these philosophers, and intellectually conscious fascists still hold them in high regard. Do these philosophers have anything useful for the political left, and if so, what can we find in philosophers who outright reject egalitarianism? Episode 33 - Pt. 5 Fascism, Anti-Communism, the CIA and French Theory with Gabriel Rockhill
In the final episode in our series about Fascism, Jules speaks with Professor Gabriel Rockhill about a series of articles he wrote called "Fascism - A Counter-History". Professor Rockhill speaks to the conjunctural, structural, and systemic aspects of Fascism from a materialist perspective, and how this method breaks with liberal notions of fascism simply being an idiosyncratic occurrence that happened once in history. Along the way, questions of syncretism, operation paperclip, and Michel Foucault come up, including how the CIA targeted certain theorists in order to drive an ideological wedge between communists and left anti-communists. Episode 32 - Pt. 4 Carl Schmitt, States of Exception, and Political Theology with Matthew Lowery
Jules speaks with Matthew Lowery, one of the cohosts of the Acid Horizon Podcast, about the political works of Carl Schmitt. This conversation is part 4 in the arch of this show, and would naturally follow after our previous episodes discussing Heidegger, Fascism, and Traditionalism. Matthew explains to us who Carl Schmitt was, why one would wish to engage with his work, and makes clear that Carl Schmitt was a Nazi bastard but his ideas are still relevant to contemporary politics. Episode 31 - Pt. 3 Time and Trauma: Thinking Through Heidegger in the Thirties with Richard Polt
Jules speaks with Professor Richard Polt about the philosopher Martin Heidegger. Richard Polt is a Professor of Philosophy at Xavier University, and he is the author of several books on philosophy, including his most recent book, called Time and Trauma: Thinking Through Heidegger in the Thirties. Heidegger is a controversial figure in that he joined the Nazi party in 1933, and so this left a shadow over his philosophical contributions. Evidence revealed in the last 20 years would suggest it is not so easy to let Heidegger off the hook. Professor Teitelbaum has conducted hours of in-person interviews with members of the far-right and Traditionalists who have positioned themselves in positions of geopolitical influence. Episode 29 - Pt. 1 Apostasy, Spiritual but not Religious, Traditionalism, and Fascism
In this monologue episode, Jules talks about the ways a secular society relocates the sacred to objects of liberal worship. Along the way, he speaks to the volatility of spirituality, in that vague senses of spirituality can lead one into other thoughts that are useful for inchoate fascism. Ultimately, he argues we must take seriously the ways in which spirituality can lend itself to fascism, as there are actual fascists in the world who would leverage spirituality to spread their ideology.  Additional links below… Books! · Social and Political Thought of Julius Evola by Paul Furlong · The Case Against The Modern World: A Crash Course in Traditionalist Thought by Daniel Schwindt · War for Eternity: Inside Bannon’s Far-Right Circle of Global Powerbrokers by Benjamin Teitelbaum · Hitler’s Priestess: Savitri Devi, the Hindu-Aryan Myth, and Neo-Nazism by Nicolas Goodrick-Clark · Ur-Fascism by Umberto Eco · The Evolian Imagination: Gender, Race, and Class from Fascism to the New Right by Robert Tobin · Time and Trauma: Thinking Through Heidegger in the Thirties by Richard Polt · Contemporary Esotericism by Egil Asprem and Kenneth Granholm Articles… · Steve Bannon Cited Italian Thinker Who Inspired Fascists by Jason Horowitz in the New York Times · The Religion of the Heart: “Spirituality” In Late Modernity by Galen Watts Permanent Links below… --- Follow us on Social Media: Twitter Facebook Medium Patreon --- Join the discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/noeasyanswerspodcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/noeasyanswers/message --- Visit our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/noeasyanswers --- Hang out with us on Discord: https://discord.gg/4RHEEhdxy5 --- One-off Contribution: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/julestaylormusic --- Comments, concerns, criticisms, and vitriol: noeasyanswerspodcast@gmail.com --- Music provided by: Self-Taut

Episode 20 - Waiting for the Truth with Dr. Grover Furr
Dr. Furr is the author of several books and articles on Soviet History, specifically the Stalin era of 1930 to 1953. I wanted to talk with him because every single one of his publications stands in contradiction to the generally accepted narratives of Soviet History. If you ask a random person who Joseph Stalin is, they'll probably tell you something like Stalin was a brutal dictator and he killed millions of people. Books by historians Steven Kotkin and Robert Conquest affirm these accusations of crimes and atrocities, and so people generally believe that standard line about Stalin. Of course, all of this works in service of framing the USSR as totalitarian, and more broadly permits the positing of the false notion of horseshoe theory. As you'll hear in our conversation, Dr. Furr has spent years combing through the footnotes of the authors like Kotkin and Conquest. He's not only refuting their accusations, but he's publishing books showing why their accusations are false with primary source evidence. His work is remarkable when you begin to think of the ways 20th-century world history would change if we had to fundamentally rethink the history of Soviet Russia. It really was an honor and a privilege to speak with Dr. Furr about his research, and his latest publication, Trotsky and the Military Conspiracy. So here's my conversation, with Dr. Grover Furr. Episode 11 - The Myth of Overpopulation with Peter Coffin
Overpopulation is a controversial topic with certain grim implications. These ideas were first popularized by economist Thomas Malthusin 1798 when the world's population was around one billion people. Although Malthus was clearly wrong, proven by the fact that our global population is currently around 7.6 billion and we already grow enough food for 10 billion people, his ideas persist and are resurgent in our society and national conversations. Peter Coffin joins Jules for a conversation about all the ways a social critique from an angle of overpopulation is problematic, and ultimately promulgates a world view that is reductive, utilitarian, harsh, and inhumane. Episode 10 - Every waking moment I had booze in me with Brandon Villarreal
Today on the show is another longtime friend of mine, Brandon Villarreal.  He's a guy I met while I was still too young to legally drink or buy my own smokes.  This is the guy who took me to my first strip club while I was still underage.  He's like an older brother to me in a lot of ways.  He was always down to get into trouble, and he was sometimes a bad influence, but you need friends like that and aside from drinking and raising hell, he's also the person who first encouraged me to apply for a job in radi0 - and that was a step that would set in motion the rest of my adult life and career.     He and I are long overdue for catching up, and of course, that's part of why I wanted him to come on the show.  The other reason is that Brandon received a new liver a while back, and being a transplant survivor, he's got a new lease on life.  He's taken up drone photography as a hobby, he's out in nature taking hikes, road-tripping, and I get the feeling he's really enjoying his life.  Brandon went through a seminal event that qualitatively changed him.  I wanted to focus a lens on his life and story because it's remarkable and deserves to be heard.    Music provided by Self Taut   Follow Brandon on Instagram: @bravill  Listen Now: https://bit.ly/no_easy_answers --- Follow us on Social Media: Twitter Facebook Medium Patreon --- Join the discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/noeasyanswerspodcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/noeasyanswers/message --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/noeasyanswers/support --- Become a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/noeasyanswers --- One-off Contribution: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/julestaylormusic --- Comments, concerns, criticisms, and vitriol: noeasyanswerspodcast@gmail.com

Episode 9 - Keeping promises to yourself with Nick Ross
Today on the show I'm speaking with another longtime friend of mine, Nick Ross. I met Nick while we were working for the same music store in Nashville. We were both wet behind the ears punks at the time. He was a sales hotshot and I had just been made manager over our department, so Nick and I tended to clash on the sales floor. You could probably say that we didn't like each other when we first met and looking back, I was just not a good manager. When we stopped working together, he and I became the best of friends. We spent a lot of time in our early twenties drinking beer and playing video games and in that time the person that Nick is came into focus, which is part of why I wanted to have this conversation. If you've ever hung out with the guy, you know he's immediately likable. He's an intense dude, but that intensity mainly comes from his drive, determination, competitiveness, and heart. When I describe him using those terms, I want to emphasize that all of those traits are rooted in such awesome authenticity. His drive doesn't come from a place of insecurity, his determination isn't rooted in his ego, his competitiveness is fueled by his passion and his heart is fiercely loyal to his friends. He and I have kept in touch since then but a few years ago, as you'll hear, things took a really bad turn for him. If you were to see a picture of this guy today, in the year 2020, you'd never imagine that anything like that happened to him. And that's a big reason I wanted to have Nick on the show - Nick is a beacon of positivity in these dark times. Dude is literally living his best life RIGHT NOW. IN THIS VERY MOMENT - and he radiates positive motivation to those around him, and so I wanted to dig further into all of that in hopes that our listenership can find ways to take some of his positivity, motivation, and inspiration and maybe apply some of that to these difficult days we find ourselves in. Episode 8 Part II - Samuel Thomas and being biracial in America
Today on the show I'm talking with Samuel Thomas. Sam is a longtime friend of mine I met while we were both attending college in Phoenix. He's a music producer and audio engineer, and his artist name is 'self-taut'. If you like the music on this podcast, well that's my friend Sam and I always link to his work in the show notes. The reason I wanted to have Sam on the show is partly that he's my friend and I wanted to catch up with him, but the other reason is that Sam and I are both biracial. We've never really had a conversation about our lived experiences in that context, so I thought when better to discuss that than right now, while our national conversation is centered on matters of race, systemic racism, and political struggle. This is a long conversation and so I've decided to break up the show into two parts, and I'll be releasing them on the same day. Part 1 will be Sam and I speaking about childhood and part 2 will be about adulthood. Episode 6 - Anti-Imperialism and the End of America with Rainer Shea
Today on the show I'm talking with Rainer Shea. Rainer is a friend and comrade I've gotten to know over Facebook and Twitter. He's a writer, a podcaster, and a revolutionary socialist. We're talking about Anti-Imperialism, and the reason I feel this is a conversation worthy of having in his historical moment is that I think many Americans are feeling like we're witnessing the decline of the American Empire. Things are really bad right now in the United States, both domestically and on the world stage. As we lose favor and respect among our geopolitical allies and hemorrhage credibility, America's standing in the world is on a steady decline. The world order established at the end of World War 2, with the United States being the premier military power and strongest economy, has dissipated. Although the military budget is still roughly three times the size of the Chinese military budget, our country has found itself unable to contend with any other obstacles other than a foreign war. In fact, we are a country that has made its peace with being perpetually at war, and in so many ways, America's imperialism has come home to haunt us. The rise of the police state, the surveillance state, and the patriot act leave the American public in a panopticon - but the very people who feel they're trapped in this failing capitalist system know American Empire is wounded, overextended in its territories, occupied by wars abroad and crisis at home. With all of this in our national conversations, I felt like Rainer, who makes anti-imperialism the central focus of his work, would be the perfect person to speak to about this. Our conversation is vast, but as far as tracing it back to theory, there's some Marx, Lenin, Gramsci, Althusser, and Mao.
