What is music therapy and how does it work? In this episode of the no fun city podcast, I speak with music therapist and jazz vocalist Sarah Kennedy who breaks it all down for us. Sarah is a Vancouver-based jazz vocalist who moved to Montreal. Her first album Portrait was released in 2015 and her new album will be coming out in May of 2022. She has recently received her certification in music therapy and in conversation helps me find out what music therapy actually is and how it works. A bit more about Sarah... Montréal-based, Vancouver-born jazz vocalist, and songwriter, Sarah Kennedy performs as a solo artist and as a bandleader. Known for her light and smooth vocal tone, her depth of emotional expression, and a cunning sense of humour, Sarah has performed in the TD international jazz festival and was interviewed by CBC's hot air for the 100th birthday of Ella Fitzgerald. During the pandemic, she completed her Masters in Creative Arts Therapies at Concordia University in Montréal and incorporates music therapy perspectives into her performances. ‘The Beloved’ is Sarah Kennedy’s second album featuring original music composed around poetry about universal connection, love, and finding inner peace. While recovering from heartbreak and broken dreams, Sarah was handed a book titled “The Gift”. It contained the poetry of Daniel Ladynski, inspired by his understanding of the Sufi master Hafiz. Sarah embarked on a personal healing journey through song. ‘The Beloved’ intertwines seven poems (used with permission) in original jazz-folk compositions; the work of Sarah and her musical collaborator of many years, Dan Reynolds.

Girard has received several Emerging Scholar awards, first at the Design Principles and Practices conference in Barcelona, Spain at the prestigious ELISAVA. At Emily Carr University of Art and Design, he received his second Emerging Scholar award. Other awards include RBC Emerging Scholar, Royal Bank of Canada Foundation. For 2021, he has been awarded an Emerging Scholar award from the New Directions in the Humanities conference in Madrid, Spain.

Their recent book, The Trans Generation: How Trans Kids (and Their Parents) Are Creating a Gender Revolution, situates trans kids in Canada and the US, white settler nations characterized by significant social inequality. In addition to a central research focus on transgender children and youth, Travers has published extensively on the relationship between sport and social justice, with particular emphasis on the inclusion and exclusion of women, queer and trans people of all ages. Travers is undertaking a new area of research as leader of a research team focusing on electric micro-mobilities in the context of urban and transportation planning and mobility justice. Travers is a youth baseball coach, rides a KS18XL and Veteran Sherman whenever they possibly can. Travers identifies as trans non-binary, uses the pronouns they/them/their, and lives with their partner, two kids, and two dogs in Vancouver, BC.

She recently received 2019's Newcomer award at Vancouver Women in Film Festival's Spotlight awards for her success in multiple fields.

Jeff breaks down how he got into hunting and why he changed his perspective over the years about hunting. A Bit About Jeff Chan... I grew up in a nature-loving family, exploring the woods and fishing in the ponds around my grandparents' farm, which is now protected by a conservation easement under the Ontario Farmland Trust. www.ontariofarmlandtrust.ca/programs/land-securement/protected-farms/hindmarsh-farm. Hunting is an extension of two addictions - archery and backcountry hiking. Bowhunting blends those and intensifies the experience by forcing you to immerse yourself in your surroundings and tune into every sight, sound, smell, and breeze. Plans are made according to wind direction and you have to be ready to improvise if it changes. The recurve and longbow add the challenge of having to stalk within 20m of animals that evolved to not give predators that opportunity.
