Episode 72: Lisa Cabiles - ultra runner, triathlete, and survivor

This week we talked with Lisa Cabiles. Lisa is a mother of 3, ultrarunner, and triathlete. After surviving a disabling illness, Lisa came out the other side with a strong resolve to live life to the very fullest. She has run 41 marathons to date, including completing the Boston Marathon in 2018, 2019, and 2020. More recently, Lisa has delved into the Ultramarathon and Triathlon worlds by completing multiple 50k, 50 miler, and 100 miler races while simultaneously training for IRONMAN 70.3 races.

Lisa finished the Boulder 70.3 IRONMAN and qualified for Worlds, as an age group winner. She also qualified for the 2023 Kona IRONMAN World Championships at the 2023 North American IRONMAN Championships in Texas. However, only 11 days before Kona, Lisa was hit by a reckless driver while on one of her last training rides. She is blessed to have even survived the accident suffering multiple skull fractures, a subarachnoid hemorrhage and hematoma, rib fracture, liver laceration, and pneumothorax. Grateful to be alive for her three children, Lisa hopes that as time goes on, she will be completely healed and be able to get back to running at the level she was before the accident and again compete in ultras. Thankfully God has given her a fighting spirit that has overcome so much in the past already.

Episode 60: Jim Gregory - marathoner

This week meet Jim Gregory. Jim is a masters-level runner. He also cycles in his training blocks. The sport provides Jim with the opportunity to set goals, maintain physical and mental health, and most importantly, the ability to spread positivity.

Jim discovered his passion for running when he was six years old growing up on his grandparent's farm. He raced his grandfather who was driving a tractor. Jim participated in track in middle and high school. He also ran cross country in high school and walked on to his university cross country team and ran a couple of years before becoming plagued with injuries and experiencing burn out. Jim returned to running in his late 30's and continues to run.

For Jim, running was a means of escape from the daily grind, not fully understanding the positive impact running was having on his physical and mental health. Jim says when he runs, he runs to "feel free", "free to just be". He began working with a coach who provided structure during his training blocks. Jim is grateful for all his coach has taught him about training, recovery, and the overall benefits of running to his life.

Once Jim was able to fully grasp what running was giving to him, he began to share it, empowering others to get out and move through partnerships with brands he used during training and on his social media channels. He has run 11 marathons and has currently completed five of the six world marathon majors (London, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City). Tokyo will be his final marathon to complete the sixth.

Episode 59: Maria Del P. Vazquez - mom, ultra-endurance cyclist, cycling coach & race director

Episode 59: Maria Del P. Vazquez - mom, ultra-endurance cyclist, cycling coach & race director

This episode we talk with María del P. Vázquez of Phoenix, AZ. Maria has successfully balanced a busy life raising 3 boys while single. She ventured in triathlons and ultra-running for a while but now she’s focusing only on ultra-cycling races.

Maria has conquered some of the most challenging ultra-cycling events out there around the globe; including The Longhorn 500, Hoodoo 500, Silver State 508 (‘Toughest 48 hrs in the Sport’), Paris-Brest-Paris, a grueling self-supported 750 miles race in France, and Tour De France, as part of an all-female team that for the 1st time in the history of the event completed all 21 stages a day prior to the Pro’s. She also set a record by becoming the 1st female ever to cross the state of Ohio in both directions (E-W and W-E) in separate occasions and still holds one of them. Some of these events gave her the title of 1st Puertorrican Female ever finishing or 1st Puertorrican Overall (male or female) ever finishing some of them.

As a cycling coach, Maria’s mission is to get more women in the sport and help athletes reach their goals and finish their races. She believes she can do a lot more and cannot only rise above being average but inspire others to do so with her inspirational story!

Episode 56: Leah DeKalb - runner & triathlete

Episode 56: Leah DeKalb - runner & triathlete

This week I talk with Leah DeKalb. Leah grew up in Northern California, where she was always immersed in something active: riding horses, playing soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, volleyball, track, skiing, you name it! Maintaining an active lifestyle is a part of who she is at her core. Running has always been her go-to sport to stay in shape, both mentally and physically. In 2014 she completed her first half-marathon, and in 2015, her first full marathon. She continued to love running but always sought more ways to stay active.

After watching her husband compete in a handful of triathlons, she thought, “I’d like to do that, but just the thought of it scares the daylights out of me!” She worked with her husband to learn how to swim (she could not swim a full length of the pool when she first started!), gained confidence on the bike, and took the plunge into her first Sprint Triathlon in 2018. Since then, she has continued to race in many local sprints and has qualified and raced the Olympic distance at Age Group Nationals two times. Leah took the plunge to “tri” out her first 70.3 in Waco, TX this past October. This year she has thoroughly enjoyed being a member of Team Varlo and the Elite Feed Athlete Team.

When she’s not training or racing, Leah is working on finishing up her Master’s degree in Business Management and working as a Graduate Assistant. She also loves spending time with her dog, Woodford, and husband of four years, Jeff. She looks forward to continuing to push past her limits to achieve more than she ever dreamed possible in the sport of triathlon and hopes to inspire others to do the same!

Meet Jeffery Heard. Jeffery is an over 40 runner, cyclist, and duathlete. He uses the sports to help maintain his physical and mental health well being. Jeffery is an ambassador for Altra, Rabbit, Tiux socks, Huma gels, Long Beach Marathon, and Athletic Brewing Co.

As he started his fitness journey, the goal was to combat family health issues and stay fit. But as the journey progressed, the goal transformed into inspiring other people of color to lead a more active lifestyle. As the journey continued, the goal morphed into including Jeffery sharing how running helps him keep his mental health in check.

Learning that his younger brother, Josh, passed away at age 26 in Phoenix, Arizona, was when Jeffery realized how important running was to his mental health. This devastating news sent him swirling into a tailspin. To help deal with the sudden loss, he turned to running to help process the emotions that crushed him. Episode 48: Nelle Fox - runner and owner of Excel Rocktown Running

Nelle Fox is a runner and owner of Excel Rocktown Running, an integrative coaching service that includes customized nutrition, strength, and run coaching. To date, she is a 3 time Boston Qualifier with a personal best in the marathon of 3:08:57, but also is an ultrarunner, having run Grindstone 100 as a top female finisher in 2021.

While Nelle began competing in cross country and track at an early age and had a short, but successful career in middle and high school, it was after the birth of her second daughter that her health and fitness goals shifted towards endurance running and nutrition behaviors. In the first year following her second child’s birth, she became involved in her local running community and found herself unexpectedly to be winning trail and road races outright.

However, after surviving a rough year in 2016 with multiple long-undiagnosed tick diseases, her health was in shambles, as was her career and athletic performance. Despite a Whole30 reset and what may be referred to by some as “clean eating”, inflammation took hold and required significant medical attention for over 18 months. Since early 2017, she has been on the mend and continues to navigate ongoing intermittent “flares”, with thankfully, decreasing occurrence. Through reflection, functional medicine testing, careful nutrition, and ongoing flexibility with her training and lifestyle, Nelle has been able to continue a highly functional life and continue to make gains in her running performance.

You can find Nelle on Instagram at @simplynellefox and @excelrocktownrunning. Her website is

Episode 46: Khadijah Diggs - triathlete, USAT Certified Coach, and founder of DISK

Khadijah Diggs is a mother, project manager, USAT Certified Coach, and a Team USA and Silver Ironman All-World Triathlete. Her mission is to promote a positive image of Muslim women and Islam in general through sport. "I want to change the world, one race at a time."

Training and racing started off as her therapy to recover from a failing marriage and the loss of loved ones to cancer. It has remained that but has also become how Khadijah expresses herself and share who she is as Muslim, a mother and a woman. Her goal is to open dialogue and connect women of all backgrounds on a personal level by sharing common experiences, joys and struggles through healthy living, group training and healthy competition. "I have learned traveling all over the country and the World to race, that at the core, we are more the same than different. The struggles of motherhood and just being female are universal and it binds us as women."

Never imagining the state of the World in 2020, during the 2018 off-season, Khadijah started a series of free online Get Togethers open to everyone, to discuss common and not so common endurance athlete topics. "It’s an amazing opportunity for experienced triathletes to share experiences and experiences with new triathletes. It's like having everyone over just online"

Colleen started her endurance career in high school when she ran cross country as a way to train for nordic ski competitions. She found triathlon during grad school when she was looking for like minded people to hang out with. 15+ years later she has accomplished a lot of goals in her own right like qualifying for the Boston marathon, running all but one of the six World Marathon Majors, finishing 3 IRONMAN events, racing at the USAT National Triathlon championships 4 times and most recently finishing the 70.3 World Championships in Utah. Her hope is that she can encourage her 3 children to see the fun in a healthy active lifestyle while giving back to their community as well as the importance of setting and accomplishing goals no matter how big or small.

Episode 35: Jenna-Caer Seefried - from triathlete to triathlon & strength coach

Meet Jenna-Caer Seefried. Jenna, who never played sports as a kid, lost 50lbs after joining a gym and found strength training through a weight loss competition. She started racing super sport motorcycles but wanted to find a sport that would help me keep the weight off. After joining a running club, Jenna was injured shortly after trying to do too much too soon and was recommended to do biking and swimming as rehab. She learned how to swim, got a bike and ultimately did her first triathlon at IRONMAN Buffalo Springs 70.3. Jenna has gone on to win her age-group at the ITU Long Distance World Championships and then at IRONMAN Cork.

After seeing what her body was capable of, Jenna changed her career from an IT Project Manager to become a strength and conditioning coach to help others discover what they are capable of working full time as a triathlon coach.

You can find Jenna on Instagram at @jennacaer and her website is
jennacaer.com/. She also created the Endurance Fit app (@endurancefitapp), which is available for iOS and Android.
